I don't think it was meant to say that Adam emulates Freddie.. or tries to copy him. In fact, the author of the review says quite the opposite:

"Which brings us to Adam Lambert, the American Idol runner-up who has become a winner with Queen fans for breathing new life into the band whilst never, ever doing a Freddie impression.

Like Mercury, he's a showman and a show-off but he's doing the songs his way, going much higher into the falsetto of 'Who Wants To Live Forever' and tearing into songs like 'Don't Stop Me Now' with gay abandon."

I do think the use of channel as a verb in this case, may well have been meant in this way:

channel as a verb "(transitive, of a spirit, as of a dead person) To serve as a medium for.
She was channeling the spirit of her late husband, Seth.".. (from Wiktonary.org..and other sources..)

To channel, in this case, to include Freddie Mercury who was and always will be a beloved and integral part of Queen. Nearly every tour, every concert, has included Freddie in a variety of ways.. His spirit is being "channeled" in the content of the concert, not just by Adam who sings the music "his way" as noted in the review, but by the entire band, in memorial to Freddie, still with them in spirit. And in the hearts of his friends Dr. Brian May & Roger Taylor. And fans everywhere.

I think it's important to know that Adam Lambert is not being Freddie in any shape or form, but honoring him, as Adam clearly states during every show.. every time. We fans perhaps need to recognize that he will always be compared in some way or another to Freddie, but very often it's in a very complimentary way, as he was here. Freddie will always be Queen fans' #1 frontman, and so much more.. But Adam has made it possible for so many fans, new & long time, to hear the music of Queen by 2 of the original musicians, and by a new frontman who does the music and vocals justice..

So "channeling" the spirit of Freddie Mercury seems a fitting phrase.. I personally did not take it in a negative sense, but a term praising the current show.. Including all of the band.. And Adam..
glitzyladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01923740792636576392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2198401713109790907.post-42330542077755426962018-07-05T08:25:22.680-07:002018-07-05T08:25:22.680-07:00I guess I see it this way: Simply put, unlike Quee...I guess I see it this way: Simply put, unlike Queen's other post-Freddie lead singers, including Paul Rodgers who was the closest they had to an actual official "front man," Adam is truly part of the Queen family. He is not just a tack-on who happens to sing really well. He's part of their family in spirit and feeling and understanding of the essence of Queen. Brian and Roger see this in Adam. They love him as a person. He "belongs." It's a feeling that the audiences have come to understand and love, too. It took a while, but it's a core of talent that is almost universally recognized. Adam's personality is a big part of the success of QAL. He has total humility. No arrogance. He expresses gratitude. He has a sly, sexy humor. He comes across as a smart, savvy performer, funny and multi-faceted. And with a voice of pure liquid gold. Nanbert, with respect, Queen...A FANTASTIC review!!

Nanbert, with respect, Queen and their awe-inspiring music have ALWAYS been huge and current. Their classic rock will never die. QAL are enjoying great success and rightly so, with Freddie's legacy continuing ad infinitum.Rosemary Whitehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08776292692513592855noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2198401713109790907.post-30985574115131978602018-07-04T19:09:43.612-07:002018-07-04T19:09:43.612-07:00Wonderful review....but I find a bit of a fault wi...Wonderful review....but I find a bit of a fault with the expression "Channel the Spirit of Freddie Mercury".

Enough time has passed since Freddie's death....and enough time has passed since Adam has been fronting Queen.... that everyone should recognize that Queen and Adam Lambert are "channeling" NO ONE but themselves.

Everyone agrees that Adam does not remotely imitate Freddie. Yes, Freddie wrote a lot of Queen's music...with definite collaboration with the other band members. But this band has risen to more astounding heights than before...because it IS still an astounding band, and has found an astounding frontman to continue on with its astounding repertroire!

It's nice and thoughtful to pay homage to Freddie's memory...but after this length of time, and all that has transpired in between, I feel that there is still too much attention and memorializing paid to Freddie. I know it was important at the beginning of QAL's touring... to placate the die-hard Freddie fans and make them more receptive to Adam. But Adam has proven himself MORE than capable of being the frontman....and in fact has helped Queen become bigger, better, and more current than before!

So, QAL is NOT a Freddie Mercury Tribute Band...Adam is NOT a Freddie Mercury "stand-in". He is NOT "channeling" Freddie.

Queen and Adam Lambert is a brand new entity, which does not require constant memorializing of Freddie, but is quite capable of STANDING ON ITS OWN MERITS!

I think it's time for everyone to recognize that.
