I remember when I first watched Thriller and I was like whoa what does this have to do with the song and where is it going?? when the video ended I was like 'wow now that's what you call a creative music video'
I like the NCOE video and wish the dancing had been more than it was. Must admit I have only watched the BTIKM mv a handful of times, while Adam was hot in it, I feel it was rather bland...clever concept but at the end of the day not very exciting. NCOE also a very complex deeper meaning video but at times simplicity is best and I hope if he releases a Cuckoo video he goes crazy dancing, an orgy or whatever but not give the video too much of a complex hidden meaning. You know what they say less is more :)
As for that person in the other thread saying the video would be more interesting with the band...really???? How so?? (Tommyberts maybe? Haha)
I like the video and Adam looks hot in it but I think if he had done a love song type of video it would connect with people emotionally as opposed to intellectually and I think all the best songs, videos, movies, novels etc are those that touch your heart!!!
adam's is more intellectual and deeper than a lot of people easily 'get'. there are plenty of simple MVs out there to watch. you have to give credit to an artist who gets people talking so much, so give it up for Adam's creativity. love it.

A romantic treatment on video would have been more popular, if you were going for the mass appeal, but Adam is the oblique viewpoint. As it is the video represents the song's view of living life to the fullest and not to take it for granted with "eyes wide shut". Maybe not a literal representation of the song's lyrics if you want to be technical about it, but Adam has always been one to push the imagery button, not a follower, run-of-the-mill storyteller he. With its call to break away from the doldrums and live to the fullest, Adam leads away from the pack and offers a fresh take on the romance, the love of life in order to fully appreciate another. If you want pretty romance in your videos, there's plenty of it out there already. Thanks for a great video, Adam. Another beauty, just like you.
Who wants another sappy love video. All fans want to see is Adam on the screen. Hopefully the big screen over the little screen, sooner than later. Love the video, very original just like our boy.
what 1:39PM? the song was written by bruno mars, not written by Al and 'inspired by Sauli'. that could be one interpretation but adam has talked about what the vidoe means to him- ie, flip your perception
I agree with you that Adam is "more intellectual and deeper than a lot of people easily get". He is very intelligent, creative and seems almost always thinks outside the box. This is one of the main reasons I've always loved, admired and respected Adam. He has the vision of a true artist and I feel should be appreciated as such. I think the video is extremely creative.
This video would be great to use in a class for interpretation, imagery, symbolism,meaning, etc. It's a little art film with layers that can be peeled away for analysis, if you want to go that deep. I realized most videos today are done to capture the audience's attention so that they go out and buy the single or the album. This might be too much for some of the younger music listeners who don't want to think when watching a video. They just want to be entertained by some mindless repetition of words sung by an untalented performer(feeling his crotch) surrounded by half naked dancers and bottles of alcohol. Too strong, you say. It might be, but it is the truth overall. I will take Adam Lambert's videos anyday because they are imaginative, creative, and performed by a very talented vocalist.
@2:39 PM - you are so on the mark..Adam is not just any run of the mill singer..but a true creative, intelligent, artist..unlike any we have seen lately...he stands out from the pack of mundane "singers" out there today..and as such, he will remain iconic...this video is really "not that deep" (as Adam says alot)..but, I do agree with some that the younger fans may not understand, or even want to understand the meaning and symbolism of it...gotta say.." Remember what Adam said from the beginning of his audition, the word TWISTING!!!! He is really smart and he wants us to explore the meaning and the message of the songs he makes......

In my humble opinion, I think all the people in the video have given in to the sameness of life, except of course, Adam. He keeps looking around knowing that something is wrong especially when everyone's eyes are turning black. Adam knows it is up to him to make a break. He still has some color in him so he begins to run so he can live in a better world. When the bad guys start spraying all of them the color comes out again and scares the bad guys away. And of course everybody is happy again. Color has come back into their lives.

Thoughtful, CREATIVE video with a story behind it that makes us THINK... geee, what a concept. As with BIKM... not your average expected re-hash, which Adam knows would have 3 strikes against him, AND it's what everybody else is overdoing. How many romantic videos do we not need? But, as Adam says "flip your perception". He IS a creative artist, leading a revolution that is already making history. Thank goodnes some of us get and appreciate him. What a pleasure it is to have this incredible man to witness his increasing greatness and enjoy in our lifetime.

I commented before about Adam's masterpiece video but they disappeared!(haha) Adam is pure genius, but after seeing the video again I have to say ADAM IS SO GORGOUS!!!! If I was drugging those poor people, I would pull Adam out of the group because of his sheer gorgeousness people. That hair and face and body - so hot!. What a movie star! I adore Adam in the dance scenes and wish I could see more. Of course, he had to tone done his dance routines as to not show everyone else up if you know what I mean. I just loved it and the colors and clothes were amazing. I also loved how Adam looked much cooler than everyone else! That's probably just my own biased opinion. Run Adam, run away!!!!!!!! Okay guys I was not criticizing Adam, just expressing an opinion so no need for the 'if you want romantic or sappy videos there are other out there' comments. I think its healthy to all have differing opinions and isn't that the point of Adam's video to provoke conversations and different takes and interpretations of the video??
As I said he has a deeper and complex way of interpreting songs and conceptualizing his videos; I admire that and its one of the reasons I love him because he is so different from what's out there. I actually like the video but I do enjoy a romantic video for a song talking about love......my opinion.....sue me!!!!!!
Isn't it amazing how a video from Adam Lambert for NCOE can elicit so many interesting and intelligent comments? The man inspires so many people with his voice, his style and his creative ability. He is so articulate, smart, candid and perceptive whenever there is an interview. Most performers in the music business today can't even put two sentences together without mumbling and fumbling their way through an interview or Q & A session. Then we get this unique and creative video about individuality and self-expression from Adam that exactly suits his personality and his own life experiences to a great degree. Bravo for making many of us think and reflect upon our own lives, convictions, and individual places in the world today.
Fans who want to see a romantic video from Adam may want to consider what a mine field that could be for him, given his orientation. If the video showed or hinted at a male love interest, a lot of people would freak out; if the object of his affection were female, he would be criticized for that too.
He is smart to take a different approach altogether. And it makes for a more interesting video.
Wow! I read all the earlier comments discussing this and that and not much praise (although some) and so didn't expect much. Then I viewed the video and can't believe people didn't talk about how absolutely gorgeous he is!!!! And how much of him we get to see in this video!!! And what a great job of acting he did!!! @ 8:01... unfortunately BINGO, right on the nose. Exactly what I meant when I said earlier not only is he a creative ARTIST who puts a diferent spin and thought process on his videos, but EXACTLY what you expressed on the romance... damed if he does, damned if he doesn't. It was handled beautifully and hinted at in his WWFM by the camera being the love interest. That pushed the envelope a tad. If anyone will, I believe it WILL be Adam, but I also believe right now in his career he needs to BUILD more, bust thru walls and climb steps to show the world just exactly what we KNOW, but play it smart and somewhat safe a little longer till he blows the roof off everyone's mind =) Starting with his new killer # 1 Album that is getting such good notice. VIDEO is a lasting visual, too many people still have a 'visual' of the AMAs they still want to bar his way with. Let him build his way back, and we can enjoy every step of the way =)

NCOE is doing slightly better on Itunes Pop charts. It is on #143 right now vrs #170 yesterday. Also, WWFM back to pop charts on #132! Hopefully, NCOE will be back on Music charts.
Anon 8:01 I absolutely was thinking the same thing. It would be a "minefield" if Adam wanted to make it a romantic video. Having said that, Adam is Adam. He is the guy who, on American Idol, put a twist on every song and made it his own. It's what drew so many to him and why we were SO EXCITED to see what he was going to sing and how he was going to twist the song. Creativity and brilliance in action. I have most definitely noticed a change in AI since then. I have noticed many more of the contestants trying to do the same-to change it up. Once again, I think Adam is forging a new road in music video artistry. Not the same ol' same ol'. I only hope he gets the recognition he deserves.
Some of you take yourselves just a tad to seriously for me in trying to delve into the meaning behind this wonderful video. Just say you like it or you don't. Your critiques are quite elaborate and far off the mark IMO. Let the critics who actually get paid for what they write do so. Everything I've read so far has been 5 stars.
Adam Lambert Blinds With Science In “Never Close Our Eyes” Video By Lyndsey Parker | Reality Rocks
Adam Lambert has just pod-hatched his new sci-fi thriller video for "Never Close Our Eyes," and I imagine that if Duran Duran and Russell Mulcahy had had access to advanced technology (and access to RCA's advanced budgets) during their Seven & The Ragged Tiger video era, then their clips for "Union Of The Snake" and "Wild Boys" might've looked a little something like this. The future-shocking, body-rocking "NCOE" video opus is equal parts time machine and CGI machine--a sort of laboratory hybrid of '70s space odyssey, Mad Maxian '80s dystopia, '90s cyber-rave, and millennial dance party. And it's about as addictive as the little-blue-different mystery pills that Adam's ruggedly outfitted fellow cyborg-patients gobble up like Pacman pellets in the video's early scenes. Color me impressed (in various shades of science-blindingly bright neon, of course). This just might be Adam's best video yet. Clearly it is Lambert's brave new world now. We just live in it.
Can we officially agree that this is going be the summer of Adam Lambert? The guy's already on fire with his Trespassing album, which debuted at #1. And now his new "Never Close Our Eyes" video proves he's ready for total domination as he fights the power...without a single hair falling out of place.
"Never Close Our Eyes" takes place in a dreary post-apocalyptic world where everybody appears to be prisoners closely monitored by cameras. Scenes catch Adam and other listless prisoners following "the man's" rules by doing mindless chores, marching in synchronized lines and popping pills to keep in order. (Sound familiar, "Hunger Games" fans?) But (as we already knew) Adam's no follower -- he starts a revolution!
How does the ultimate rule-breaking rock star plan to take back his individuality? With colorful smoke and flawless choreography, of course. Adam and crew dance for their freedom in bright outfits -- Adam's not only bringing the new tunes this summer, he's also bringing florescent accessories back. Thought you knew. Inciting anarchy has never looked so glamb-orous.
I really agree with many of you that Adam is very intelligent and creative. He doesn't just do what people expect or what sells, he has a visual and multilayer conceptual image of things in every situation. We have also seen it in many interviews, whatever he is asked to do or talk he never hesitates a second.
I believe his creativity will take his far, whatever he does. There are so many critics and professionals (including Queen members) who recognize his talent, which is above "just great vocals".
Many times I wonder what are the reasons why he hasn't exploded everything and everyone yet. I can figure out some reasons but don't know really. Because I don't belong to the "mass", I don't know what the masses want and like. Probably different reasons in different countries groups of people? I admire Adam for taking his own way and vision.
I liked this video, and I also loved BTIKM video - in that one he opened himself a lot. And he looked very good in both vids :))
Incredible video! Did you expect someone with the out the box intelligence of Adam to come up with some repetitive non meaningful concept? Heck no! This IS ADAM, and this is a genius music video and I am always in awe at Adam's abundance of creativity! He is a genius!
Sometimes it seems people just see a sexual side to Adam and forget he's musical ability too. Why would he for goodness sake make a 'romantic' music video. Adam will always break the mold.
AWESOME video clip and one that I'll watch many times over to absorb it all. One thing's for sure - Adam never does anything boring! The BTIKM video clip is my absolute fave Adam video clip but this one comes a close second.

I just re-read this thread, it's scary how so many of you deify Adam. Who is the nitwit on twitter? LaurieLovesAdam? Quite a few of you are bordering on the LALA LAND she lives in.
He's not an outstanding creative genius, a complex deep thinker, he is not iconic, he is not a good actor, perhaps that is why he was an understudy or chorus boy when he could outsing every other stage performer. He is not an intellectual genius either. He is a damn good singer, fantastic looking and has buckets of charisma. He is clever and well spoken. And for some strange reason I love him to pieces (as you do).
Being GORGEOUS and HOT ( I am sick of those words, can't anyone come up with some new descriptive words ?) does not mean you are infalliable. He's not always right but he is determined to do as he pleases. Some of his fans will approve, some not. That does not mean they will desert him.

Adam is far more than just a damn good singer, right now he's the best in the business, may be not a genius but pretty dam close to it, and I'll make a bet that Adam is well on his way to becoming iconic. "Why would he make a romantic video"? Maybe because it's a romantic song. Romantic does not have to mean sexy, so there does not have to be a minefield for him to enter. What's wrong with romance? It's beautiful, it's peace for the soul, it's warmth and longing and fulfillment.
When I listen to NCOE I want to feel a love story in my heart, not drugged fenced in people trying to escape a hellish existence.
It spoils my mood. Save escaping for Cuckoo or Chokehold or even Trespassing.
When romance becomes boring and mundane I hope I check out.

Adam is a great artist. Yes, this is a twist and not what you would expect. But that is why we love him. He is exciting. And you know what else this vid shows? He has movie star great looks, has wonderful acting ability and can always keep us thinking. Futuristic yes, and Adam is about the future. Forward thinking is what he is about. LOVE it!
I agree with you..we don't all have to love the video..for sure! But I hope we'll all try to be respectful to each other about that..and to Adam for his imagination and his vision for the message he is conveying in the video. There are some who are commenting on the production values, his acting, etc.. Geez!! Not a big budget production here..and compared to some music video's I've seen, its VERY good, and very imaginative. I'm proud of Adam for being the unique person that he is and trying to present the song in a slightly different light. "With a Twist.." as he said. I'm here to support Adam and flail at his triumphs, not pick him apart....Lets also try to remember he had ONE DAY to film this..I think they all did an amazing job, especially given the limited time and (I suspect) money.. available. And yes, he looks GORGEOUS in the video..(hey, I have a reasonably decent vocabulary but that term pretty much covers it...because he DOES..LOOK..GORGEOUS..) Hard to keep up with the comments on here lately... Love the video, the dancing and colours were such a surprise on first viewing, and I agree about the dancing being too short....and the camera should have lingered on his face a bit more at the end like in his other videos. Don't know whats up with the viewing figures, they seem to have been stuck since yesterday afternoon. Hopefully they will correct themselves soon. Love all the positive reviews.
Can't believe the presenter on clever music at the top of this thread, she seems to have totally got the video wrong.
And @anon may29 2.39. I disagree about the younger viewers, from what I've been reading on the internet, this is just what younger fans like, and is very current with the elements of The Hunger Games in it. In fact so far, it seems more popular with younger people than older ones.
And agree that Adam can't do a video with a love interest at the moment, like I think it was anon 8.01 may 29th said, he'd be dammned either way whether with a male or female.
I don't think I can pick a favourite Adam video, I like them all for different reasons.

He keeps looking around knowing that something is wrong especially when everyone's eyes are turning black. Adam knows it is up to him to make a break. He still has some color in him so he begins to run so he can live in a better world. When the bad guys start spraying all of them the color comes out again and scares the bad guys away. And of course everybody is happy again. Color has come back into their lives.

Thoughtful, CREATIVE video with a story behind it that makes us THINK... geee, what a concept. As with BIKM... not your average expected re-hash, which Adam knows would have 3 strikes against him, AND it's what everybody else is overdoing. How many romantic videos do we not need?
But, as Adam says "flip your perception". He IS a creative artist, leading a revolution that is already making history. Thank goodnes some of us get and appreciate him. What a pleasure it is to have this incredible man to witness his increasing greatness and enjoy in our lifetime.

ReplyDeleteI commented before about Adam's masterpiece video but they disappeared!(haha) Adam is pure genius, but after seeing the video again I have to say ADAM IS SO GORGOUS!!!! If I was drugging those poor people, I would pull Adam out of the group because of his sheer gorgeousness people. That hair and face and body - so hot!. What a movie star! I adore Adam in the dance scenes and wish I could see more. Of course, he had to tone done his dance routines as to not show everyone else up if you know what I mean. I just loved it and the colors and clothes were amazing. I also loved how Adam looked much cooler than everyone else! That's probably just my own biased opinion. Run Adam, run away!!!!!!!!

Okay guys I was not criticizing Adam, just expressing an opinion so no need for the 'if you want romantic or sappy videos there are other out there' comments. I think its healthy to all have differing opinions and isn't that the point of Adam's video to provoke conversations and different takes and interpretations of the video??

Isn't it amazing how a video from Adam Lambert for NCOE can elicit so many interesting and intelligent comments? The man inspires so many people with his voice, his style and his creative ability. He is so articulate, smart, candid and perceptive whenever there is an interview. Most performers in the music business today can't even put two sentences together without mumbling and fumbling their way through an interview or Q & A session. Then we get this unique and creative video about individuality and self-expression from Adam that exactly suits his personality and his own life experiences to a great degree. Bravo for making many of us think and reflect upon our own lives, convictions, and individual places in the world today.

Fans who want to see a romantic video from Adam may want to consider what a mine field that could be for him, given his orientation. If the video showed or hinted at a male love interest, a lot of people would freak out; if the object of his affection were female, he would be criticized for that too.

Exactly what I meant when I said earlier not only is he a creative ARTIST who puts a diferent spin and thought process on his videos, but EXACTLY what you expressed on the romance... damed if he does, damned if he doesn't. It was handled beautifully and hinted at in his WWFM by the camera being the love interest. That pushed the envelope a tad. If anyone will, I believe it WILL be Adam, but I also believe right now in his career he needs to BUILD more, bust thru walls and climb steps to show the world just exactly what we KNOW, but play it smart and somewhat safe a little longer till he blows the roof off everyone's mind =) Starting with his new killer # 1 Album that is getting such good notice. VIDEO is a lasting visual, too many people still have a 'visual' of the AMAs they still want to bar his way with. Let him build his way back, and we can enjoy every step of the way =)

NCOE is doing slightly better on Itunes Pop charts. It is on #143 right now vrs #170 yesterday. Also, WWFM back to pop charts on #132! Hopefully, NCOE will be back on Music charts.
ReplyDeleteAnon 8:01 I absolutely was thinking the same thing. It would be a "minefield" if Adam wanted to make it a romantic video. Having said that, Adam is Adam. He is the guy who, on American Idol, put a twist on every song and made it his own. It's what drew so many to him and why we were SO EXCITED to see what he was going to sing and how he was going to twist the song. Creativity and brilliance in action. I have most definitely noticed a change in AI since then. I have noticed many more of the contestants trying to do the same-to change it up. Once again, I think Adam is forging a new road in music video artistry. Not the same ol' same ol'. I only hope he gets the recognition he deserves.

Your critiques are quite elaborate and far off the mark IMO. Let the critics who actually get paid for what they write do so. Everything I've read so far has been 5 stars.

Adam Lambert has just pod-hatched his new sci-fi thriller video for "Never Close Our Eyes," and I imagine that if Duran Duran and Russell Mulcahy had had access to advanced technology (and access to RCA's advanced budgets) during their Seven & The Ragged Tiger video era, then their clips for "Union Of The Snake" and "Wild Boys" might've looked a little something like this.
The future-shocking, body-rocking "NCOE" video opus is equal parts time machine and CGI machine--a sort of laboratory hybrid of '70s space odyssey, Mad Maxian '80s dystopia, '90s cyber-rave, and millennial dance party. And it's about as addictive as the little-blue-different mystery pills that Adam's ruggedly outfitted fellow cyborg-patients gobble up like Pacman pellets in the video's early scenes.
Color me impressed (in various shades of science-blindingly bright neon, of course). This just might be Adam's best video yet. Clearly it is Lambert's brave new world now. We just live in it.

Can we officially agree that this is going be the summer of Adam Lambert? The guy's already on fire with his Trespassing album, which debuted at #1. And now his new "Never Close Our Eyes" video proves he's ready for total domination as he fights the power...without a single hair falling out of place.
"Never Close Our Eyes" takes place in a dreary post-apocalyptic world where everybody appears to be prisoners closely monitored by cameras. Scenes catch Adam and other listless prisoners following "the man's" rules by doing mindless chores, marching in synchronized lines and popping pills to keep in order. (Sound familiar, "Hunger Games" fans?) But (as we already knew) Adam's no follower -- he starts a revolution!
How does the ultimate rule-breaking rock star plan to take back his individuality? With colorful smoke and flawless choreography, of course. Adam and crew dance for their freedom in bright outfits -- Adam's not only bringing the new tunes this summer, he's also bringing florescent accessories back. Thought you knew. I really agree with many of you that Adam is very intelligent and creative. He doesn't just do what people expect or what sells, he has a visual and multilayer conceptual image of things in every situation. We have also seen it in many interviews, whatever he is asked to do or talk he never hesitates a second.
ReplyDeleteI believe his creativity will take his far, whatever he does. There are so many critics and professionals (including Queen members) who recognize his talent, which is above "just great vocals".
Many times I wonder what are the reasons why he hasn't exploded everything and everyone yet. I can figure out some reasons but don't know really. Because I don't belong to the "mass", I don't know what the masses want and like. Probably different reasons in different countries groups of people? I admire Adam for taking his own way and vision.
I liked this video, and I also loved BTIKM video - in that one he opened himself a lot. And he looked very good in both vids :))

Sometimes it seems people just see a sexual side to Adam and forget he's musical ability too. Why would he for goodness sake make a 'romantic' music video. Adam will always break the mold.

ReplyDeleteI just re-read this thread, it's scary how so many of you deify Adam. Who is the nitwit on twitter? LaurieLovesAdam? Quite a few of you are bordering on the LALA LAND she lives in.
He's not an outstanding creative genius, a complex deep thinker, he is not iconic, he is not a good actor, perhaps that is why he was an understudy or chorus boy when he could outsing every other stage performer. He is not an intellectual genius either. He is a damn good singer, fantastic looking and has buckets of charisma. He is clever and well spoken. And for some strange reason I love him to pieces (as you do).
Being GORGEOUS and HOT ( I am sick of those words, can't anyone come up with some new descriptive words ?)
does not mean you are infalliable. He's not always right but he is determined to do as he pleases. Some of his fans will approve, some not. That does not mean they will desert him.
@2:39 P.M. The video is a little art film? ____A class should be taught using the video to study interpretation, imagery, symbolism, analysis? Yeah, Gaga's videos too I suppose.

Adam is far more than just a damn good singer, right now he's the best in the business, may be not a genius but pretty dam close to it, and I'll make a bet that Adam is well on his way to becoming iconic. He's learning all the time and since idol I see a more polished Adam, I'd say he has a huge future ahead, already world famous, with continued success how can he not be iconic?

AND glamily, I personally LOVED the video. Very minimalistic and yet completely communicative. BUT don't forget that everyone's entitled to their opinions and not everyone's OBLIGATED to love the video. Isn't this "freedom", the whole main idea of the NCOE vid...? ;)
"Why would he make a romantic video"? Maybe because it's a romantic song. Romantic does not have to mean sexy, so there does not have to be a minefield for him to enter. What's wrong with romance? It's beautiful, it's peace for the soul, it's warmth and longing and fulfillment.

Adam is a great artist. Yes, this is a twist and not what you would expect. But that is why we love him. He is exciting. And you know what else this vid shows? He has movie star great looks, has wonderful acting ability and can always keep us thinking. Futuristic yes, and Adam is about the future. Forward thinking is what he is about. LOVE it!

I agree with you..we don't all have to love the video..for sure! But I hope we'll all try to be respectful to each other about that..and to Adam for his imagination and his vision for the message he is conveying in the video. There are some who are commenting on the production values, his acting, etc.. Geez!! Not a big budget production here..and compared to some music video's I've seen, its VERY good, and very imaginative. I'm proud of Adam for being the unique person that he is and trying to present the song in a slightly different light. "With a Twist.." as he said. I'm here to support Adam and flail at his triumphs, not pick him apart....Lets also try to remember he had ONE DAY to film this..I think they all did an amazing job, especially given the limited time and (I suspect) money.. available. And yes, he looks GORGEOUS in the video..(hey, I have a reasonably decent vocabulary but that term pretty much covers it...because he DOES..LOOK..GORGEOUS..) Even my husband comments on what a handsome man Adam is..Nothing wrong with mentioning it here from time to time!! (Can't help it...........)

ReplyDeleteLove the video, the dancing and colours were such a surprise on first viewing, and I agree about the dancing being too short....and the camera should have lingered on his face a bit more at the end like in his other videos.
Don't know whats up with the viewing figures, they seem to have been stuck since yesterday afternoon. Hopefully they will correct themselves soon.

Can't believe the presenter on clever music at the top of this thread, she seems to have totally got the video wrong.
And @anon may29 2.39. I disagree about the younger viewers, from what I've been reading on the internet, this is just what younger fans like, and is very current with the elements of The Hunger Games in it. In fact so far, it seems more popular with younger people than older ones.
And agree that Adam can't do a video with a love interest at the moment, like I think it was anon 8.01 may 29th said, he'd be dammned either way whether with a male or female.
I don't think I can pick a favourite Adam video, I like them all for different reasons.
