'American Idol': The 20 Best Performances Ever

3. ADAM LAMBERT, ''Mad World'' (Season 8)
Sure, Adam's interpretation of Gary Jules' cover of a minor Tears for Fears hit was vocally flawless. But that was pretty much par for the course during the season 8 runner-up's Idol run. What made ''Mad World'' so absolutely electrifying was the way Adam connected emotionally with the material. As he delivered the lines ''I went to school and I was very nervous/No one knew me, no one knew me,'' Adam, bathed in blue light, managed to tap into that wellspring of pain and insecurity that pretty much every person on the planet has felt at one time or another: The kid at school who can't find anyone to sit with in the cafeteria. The panic-stricken worker in the first week at a new job. The guest who shows up at a party and realizes, ''Oh, crap! I don't know anyone here but the host.'' There's something really special about a musical performance that can transport you to any number of places or scenarios. In the end, I think the British judge's standing ovation said it all.

Adam's facial expressions captivated me as much as his beautiful voice, phrasing, breathing and understated emotional control. The whole performance [the finale]was perfect in every way, quietly powerfully mesmerising millions. My heart still skips a beat every time I hear it. At the last note his eyes just pop, looking straight at you, connecting you to him forever... funbunn40

Every song Adam sang on Idol was [IMHO]better than any other performance by any other artist, any week since Idol began. There have been many talented singers that I have also enjoyed, but none demonstrating the same caliber of showmanship, stage presence and vocal ability and control. His professional training and experience also became apparent with his comfort level and confidence. No one could match the excitement and anticipation he brought to the show. I can't imagine anyone following his act with all that he brought to the competition. funbunn40

#3!!!!! Are they kidding??? I agree with funbunn40. Every song he sang was better than any other contestant or winner on American Idol.

I love all of his AI performances. But yes Mad World was a jaw dropping performance. I remember I was at a friend's house watching AI with bunch of other friends. During other idol performances we talked but once Adam came on we were all quiet. Once he finished we all said he definitely is a winner. Too bad he didn't win at the end of finale. But that's in the past and he is a Sure Fire Winner all around the world.

Speaking of winning, please help Adam win this YouTube competition. If he wins he will get free worldwide promotion by YouTube on its first page. You can also win prizes yourself by adding points and telling your friends about this on Facebook and Twitter. Please go to this link: http://www.youtube.com/myyoutube Subscribe, Vote, & Win. Love you all!

Happy New Year!

What about A Change is Gonna Come, Ring Of Fire, Tracks of My Tears, Whole Lotta Love etc etc? How can they put Jason Castro before any of those? Was it M Slezak who made the list?

Eva

Anonymous said...

Well 1 was Fantasia and I read somewhere she was his favorite idol so all is not lost :)
but I do agree all of his performances were much better vocally than most contestants...but of course its very subjective because its not all about vocal range and power, its being effective with what you've got and making it artistic expression out of a cover. Mad World is the perfect case in point.
Just sayin.

@Eva 12:08pm

Jason Castro is not on the list at all...It was M. Slezak who made this list who we all know is not the biggest Adam fan. So he named Fantasia as #1 and Kelly Clarkson as #2. I did not watch AI in the first few seasons, actually not until season 6. Personally, I don't think there is any other Idol who comes close to Adam's talent, professionalism, control, emotionality and creativity.....Not to mention fantastic good looks! I know we can't hog all the spots with Adam only but he definitely should be #1.

@CT

Jason Castro is #17 with Halleluja. I remember he was some kind of joke on the show and that Halleluja was the only song he didn´t get bashed for. Blake Lewis on #4 I don´t even remember.

who was number 1 then?

Critics have their own likes and dislikes, so personal choices will always weigh in. I have read many times where people say Fantasia had an unforgettable song. Kelly Clarkson can do no wrong as she was the first Idol, and therefore on a pedestal. So for Adam to come in third in this lineup all good. Personally, I thought it was no. one, but I didn't write the review.

I believe every performance Adam gave would take up the entire top 20. Didn't he sing 20 times(counting the 3 audition performances & duet with Allison)? My only problem would be ranking them from least good to best.

I got tears and chills when he started singing right after Kris in the number they did with Queen. His operatic voice starts out and fills up the entire theatre (leaving poor Kris in the dust). That boy knows how to project! The only way I can describe the power of it is that it feels and sounds like a jet engine starting up and taking off. He simply outsang KISS--especially that glory note at the end.

Then there is that spectacular performance of A Change is Gonna Come--particularly when he dipped down then brought his voice right back up high again. So fabulous. Felt excitement in my stomach--like being on a roller coaster. Got chills and tears on that one, too. He also sang it like he meant it--which we all know he did. Paula thought this was his best.

Tracks of My Tears, when even the base player took a deep breath with Adam, because he already knew how Adam was going to finish that song in his falsetto (if it isn't flat out his true tenor voice--not falsetto at all).

Loved, loved, loved Born to Be Wild and Play That Funky Music. Not only can Adam sing--he can sing while dancing like a maniac! I loved his ballet type movements with his hands, arms, and body positioning on Mad World 2--sung perfectly. Got more tears and chills with If I Can't Have You. (Think he meant that one, too, and I don't think he was singing about Drake).

He had me hooked at Can't Get No Satisfaction--remember it like yesterday! The Results Show version was especially fabulous. Then there were tears in his eyes when the judges raved about Black & White just when he may have thought it was all over because the boyfriend kissing and drag pictures had shown up.

And--Feeling Good. Surprisingly none of the judges talked about his spectacular singing acrobatics on this one. Go figure. The recorded version of this takes his voice into the next stratosphere. And his spectacular Whole Lotta Love with all those guitars & those naughty eyes! Yep. Adam deserves all top 20 spots.

Exactly. A Change Is Gonna Come is really like a roller coaster. Very good description. I have listened through all of Adams Idol performances in a row and it left me sweaty, exhausted and teary eyed and I knew that there will never, never ever be another like him.

I became an AL fan when he performed "Whole Lotta Love". I knew that after that performance that AI would never be the same and he set the bar high for every other performer after him. He introduced WLL to the world and blows everyone away everytime he sings it! Brillant!

Anonymous said...

a whole lotta love will always be associated with Adam Lambert. He took that song to a whole new level of excellence! Watching him perform it on the AI tour was like watching Elvis pandemonium all over again! The roar of the crowd is deafening! Adam is a legend in the making! NO AI contestant before or after will measure his magnetism!

Anonymous said...

when Adam sang "Beth" by Kiss it took my breath away! He can make it a hit again! Adam delivered solid performances throughout the AI competition and still lost. I never understood how that could possibly happen? Fixed? Carrie Underwood is successful in her own right, but will never hold a candle to the Glam Rock God...Adam F****** Lambert!

Anonymous said...

Adam is the reason why AI went downhill after season 8 because Adam was the best we've ever seen and our expectations changed‼ Not Adam's fault we just saw something extraordinary. That's why Adam is the best... bar none‼ Unless someone of Adam's level shows up next season then AI will do ok... imo Loved Adam the minute I saw him & when he opened his beautiful mouth & heard his unbelievable voice. :)

Anonymous said...

My AL favorite is Whole Lotta Love because from the very beginning of the final rounds of the competition, he wanted to perform this song and he got it !! (see Q&A on his profile in the official American Idol website. However Mad World has a social relevance...

While obviously Adam should take all the top spots...(although i did love Jason castro, not the greatest singer but wonderful eyes and smile), I don't get why this list is suddenly making all the headlines now. Reading all the comments on the original article they are from april 2010.

Adam Mitchel Lambert is no doubt a performance artist par excellence! Mr. Slezak has his personal favorites and i'd give that to him. But personally i would put Jennifer Hudson, Melinda Doolittle and Elliot Yamin much higher in the list even Carly S. for that matter. Adam has proven his versatility in this show and all his performances were breathtaking and i mean all of them. It was pretty obvious considering the amount of preparation that he did each night. It would really be hard for me to choose the best but they deserve to be number 1. But it's okay because it is not my list anyway. For somebody who has other favorites giving him the number 3 spot is good enough ;-)

I wasn't even going to read anything here first, but just post my knee-jerk, gut reaction to seeing and listening to the WHOLE list. I will admit a few pleasant surprises, only a few.
After reading I have to mention some other posts with similar points - Eva, Bing, Kentucky Fan and parts of a few others.

First of all I'm incredibly happy Adam was placed at #3. Mad World and his emotional delivery touched nerves in a lot of people, but I do personally have to argue though I'm thrilled with the #3 placement, I agree with EVA ABSOLUTELY about his AMAZING delivery of "A Change is Gonna Come, If I Can't have you, Ring of Fire, Tracks of My Tears, Whole Lotta Love and so many others.

Someone here mentioned Fantasia (PLEEEASE... eewww) is Adam's favorite?? =0 Really?? I'll have to give her another listen, because I can't STAND her. I would personally put Melinda Doolittle's amazing performance of "My Funny Valentine WAAAAY ahead of Summertime... Fantasia sounded like nails on a chalkboard to me with that screechy voice and usually with so many runs you never hear the real melody. (I think Summertime is the ONLY one I actually COULD hear the melody on.)

Back to Adam... his performances were ALL sooo far above the rest, it's hard to choose his BEST.. they ALL were! Adam at average (if he ever was) would be a mind-blowing performance for anyone else.
I DO believe he 'ruined' AI because there will never be another with his raw talent, pure voice, incredible vocal control & touching, expressive delivery.
As I posted here on another thread... Simon said it all when he commented" Wev'e done our jobs.. we've FOUND our INTERNSTIONAL Superstar"...

#3 works for me just fine...right next to the wonderful performance of Kelly Clarkson( as long as they move Fantasia - eeewww the hell out of #1...

Always using the words I would use for my comments... tsk, tsk... I have to study ENGLISH (not sweet Adam) harder!

You have your homework very well done, haven't you? So I have mine!
What an excellent teacher for total and absolutely amazing artistry sweet Adam is... indeed!

Fantasia never really did it for me either. She looks like a sweetheart but I found her voice squeaky and nasal at times. Just watched Jennifer Hudson sing on a Tribute to Oprah with the Obamas at Lincoln centre and that was spectacular. Of course, for me, Adam is #1.

Adam should be number one. Mad World was good, but I was more in love with Satisfaction, Black or White, Tracks of My Tears, Play That Funky Music and Whole Lotta Love. Fantasia was always my least fav voice but before Adam, Kelly Clarkson was my fav. All the performances he gave should be on that list because he was by far the most talented of them all.

YES, Kentucky fan! Loved all that you have mentioned! Actually loved EVERY single song Adam performed. Beth was also so beautifully done as well as If I Can't Have You. Wish he would do covers of these, especially Beth. His voice is so sincere and mellow. funbunn40

OT...Hi Fan4fun! Has Icon forgiven Adam for not liking cats? My two are still sulking! I'm going back home Jan. 8th and they are very mad at me for abandoning them for so long. Will have to play Soaked for them to get them in a forgiving mood! Great minds think alike!! hahaha funbunn40

Well, since we are talking about Adam's many stellar performances...and they are ALL stellar, I have to say that in addition to his performances during the season...I absolutely came unglued (in a good way of course..) and literally stood up and cheered in front of the 50 inch plasma when he sang "Beth" on the Finale show...Seeing him standing there, as the "real" Adam Lambert with his glitter and wings, his "Glittery Alien from Planet Fierce" rock god outfit ; ) I felt utter joy and pride for this amazing and brave man who could finally allow himself to BE himself in front of millions, when at last he was not being "judged" and it didn't matter any more...the winner in so many peoples minds and hearts..in spite of the outcome at the end of the show..And I still remember at the beginning of season 9, they showed a picture of Adam and said "A Star is Born" ...their not so subtle way of acknowledging Adam as the Star of Season 8...Loved that moment as well...The only part of that season I loved, except for Adam's mentor performance...

I had never seen AI until I clicked on it by accident one night and Adam was singing "Satisfaction". I could not change the channel! I was perplexed when I realized it was AI. I assumed, AI had mostly dorky contestants but Adam was a talented seasoned professional who was also incredibly good looking.

Something clicked and I could not get him out of my mind and that wasn't like me at all. LOL

After that performance, I was glued to AI but I muted everyone else singing but Adam and Allison though. The last show was painful to watch him not get the title he worked so hard for but in the end, he was always the winner where it counts which is TALENT. No one comes close to him on that one.

Seeing him perform Live this summer was pretty amazing. Adam was Born to sing and when he dances across that stage..it's a thrill.

Que les parece a ustedes, que para que sus amado gatos, superen su desamor con nuestro querido ADAM,

@Cindy

I have to confess, I had never heard Fantasia before today. I went to YouTube an expected something special and powerful as I have heard about her. "Summertime" was ok but not by far could that performance outshine anything Adam did. I listened to "I believe" and that was truly painful. She has a week nasal voice, pitchy on the higher notes. She def needs auto tuning. You mentioned Melinda Doolittle. She was my fav before Adam. Amazing woman, humble and with a genuin voice. Of course she was voted off and I don´t know who won that year because I lost interest. Kelly Clarkson performed on our Swedish Idol a few years ago. She seemed like a really sweet and down to earth person, and she can sing. What she doesn´t have is Adams personality and charisma. I would not stand in line for ours for her concerts or buy her records, but I like her on MTV or radio.

@ Eva, Thanks! & happy to hear your take on Fantasia. Agreed. I try to be fair to everyone, and usually like or even fall in love with those Adam likes or recommends... Sorry, not even Adam can convince me on THIS one, especially if HE is on the same list!

Melinda was AMAZING and should have won... Jordin Sparks won that year and I never got over it. In my opinion, she 's very GOOD, but nowhere NEAR the performer Melinda IS. She's younger, cute and more marketable, THAT's why she won.
(no one will convince me otherwise)

OOH, thanks for the Sleepwalker link. That's my fave an he does SUCH passionate amazing performances of it live... WOW! Chalk up another one!

I noticed that a lot of the better ones were not actually the winners during their season! Hmmm...
I guess they wanted 20 different people for this list or Adam would have been in at least 10 times with different songs!

Anonymous said...

I think all of Adam's performances on AI were spectacular, but his rendition of ONE the song from Bono and U2 was by far my favorite. His magnificent voice and those camera angles just were AMAZING!!! Adam set the bar so high with his vocal talent that everything during Season 9 was dull and boring. His passion for each song and that charismatic personality with a degree of humility as the judges gave their comments made him the winner in my eyes . As can be seen from all the comments above, Adam Lambert is one awesome performer both musically and visually.

»I can't establish any comparison to ADAM (without taking away from other contestants the merits they may have).
ADAM demonstrated in Idol that he is UNIQUE, privileged for having an exceptional and extraordinary voice, and an amazing ability for all scenic areas, being his performances [gifted with] extraordinary quality and originality, with [causing] an absorbing ipact on the souls of the public.
So right it is that ADAM, one year after Idol, had showed exceeding [the expectations] his interpretative quality and his capacity of work in all activities he has done, including his recent triumphant tour with the Glam Nation, all successfully.
As a matter of fact, I can't see right now [any] other contestant having all the artistic conditions that this BRILLIANT and MAGICAL young man has and we must have [them] recognized. We must stay on our feet and applaud with all the LOVE and ENTHUSIASM of this world the # 1 ADAM LAMBERT!!!! HH»

Icon can't feel mad at sweet Adam at all! As a matter of fact he doesn't give a glamshit if sweet Adam is alergic or not, first thing in the morning he runs to the kitchen for his breakfast and soon after runs to my laptop, eager for sweet Adam news on 24/7 Paradise while hearing «Soaked».
Now, if I were YOU, I would take HH's advice for YOUR cats, you «out of body homeless voyager»! Ha!

THANK you so much!!! I feel much better now, lol, balance is restored. That makes much more sense to me.

Adam has excellent taste that I've always trusted. His recommendation of Sia (talk about different) was amazing, so this just didn't add up to me. I had never heard or read HIM stating what I read here. I thought I, or he lost some marbles for a split second there!

Whew! Thanks for straightening that out.
