Gee, those closing comments by the narrator....Had those other singers come out before their big success, it would have been detrimental to their careers, huh? And that's because it was "in another era." Well, Adam came out BEFORE he began recording, and YES, it has burt him, even in this current era. Not much has changed.

@DRG I agree with you 100%! But I love how brave Adam is and true to himself,so wouldn't want it any other way. Unfortunately Adam will always have to struggle against close minded people. I hope that things change in the future and Adam is helping to pave the way for future gay artists and for people to accept themselves and others.

Adam's interviews are about gay gay and boyfriend. Needs to get off of it. Talk about the music or the moon or something. People get tired of hearing it.Other musicians don't say straight straight and talk about their girlfriend or boyfriend. He could stop it. Sauli did and told them the interview would be quiet if they asked about his relationship. Sauli is a class act, so different than some of Adam's ex's.I like Adam and support him but I am beginning to think he is in trouble with these record sales. I'm not sure he ever recovered from AMA. Wishing him good luck and nothing but the best.

Achoo. Sorry, I'm allergic to trolls with too much time on their hands.

OT Give NCOE some views on VH1 please. It hopefully can get on the countdown soon.

Adam is more tougher now with this type of comments indeed!!!

Remember what he said from the Wilkes Barre concert, this is only the beginning:))) Yes!!!

More success on the way folks and he deserves everything on his way right now!!

Unfortunately, I do believe that because Adam is gay that has hurt him to some extent. Is that why he doesn't get radio play? Not sure but I always think in the back of my mind that is the case. He will prevail and become an icon -- it may be a slow process but he will get there.

My comment to Anonymous 7:23p.m. In a lot of Adam's interviews, it's usually the interviewer bringing up the gay topic. I really can't recall Adam bringing up the gay topic on his own but I may be wrong. I'm sure he'd much rather talk about his music - after all he is all about the music!

IT ALL ABOUT MUSIC WHY MEDIA INTERVIEWER KEEP MENTION ABOUT GAY; WHAT GAY ELTON JOHN GAT RICKIE MARTIN AND BOY ROERGE?WHAT IS THIS- ITS ALLL ABOUT MUSIC GUYS INTERVIEWER-MEDIA. CRAZY.

ADAM may be struggling right now but in my heart I know he will be iconic, he will get there. There's nothing negative that can be said about ADAM. Every positive superlative applies to him. Above all else his phenomenal persona is his being genuine and authentic and most of all his HUMILITY. All these tell me there's a reward waiting for him at the end of the rainbow! His path to success is unorthodox because ADAM is different. He will prove you cannot put a good thing down, especially someone who is great in every way. I believe in ADAM and in his astounding destiny.

It just amazes me that people are surprised that a gay person can sing. Do they think only straight people can sing. It's as if a gay person is not supposed to have any talent. Of course it took many years for black people to be accepted. Now we know that some of the best singers in the world are black, and they are finally accepted as real people. Hope it doesn't take that long for gays to be accepted.

Well, I'll try and summarise the crux of this clip; that Adam is #1 in all of the past/present/future gay kingdom and now encroaching upon the straight one as well! I think forget about gay; he beats everyone else straight or gay...the latter would have been a more appropriate angle, the clip could have taken. Yea I too can't understand why this halabaloo, hue and cry gay aspect is taking centre stage. Adam, his art and vocal skills should be explored deeper so other artists can glean/learn from them. For example, how does Adam change his voice say from mid-tenor to super-alto or even falsetto? What must he do to achieve that; by the vocal-cords, throat/tongue/mouth movements, breathing...?

@DRG - agree 100% with your comments. Anyone who doesnt think that Adam being gay hasnt put him at a hugh disadvantage in his career must not get out much in the real world. Sad but true. . . . Adamluv

I wonder if one million moms ever watched Rock Hudson,Randolf Scott, james Dean,Sal Mineo or even Rickey Martin I bet they say oh my but I didn,t know they was gay they are so stupid. Love Adam for ever thing he is so honest.

Yea, agree, Runnin is totally suitable for a Disney movie; imagine all the little or big animals and characters running say from a super calamity...with Adam's passion thrown in as a catalyst. So Adam is making his presence felt in the movie world; slowly but surely, one step at a time...He can even be one of the voices in the production. :)

His Voice , his Music will win over everything else!

Adam's use of the freedom of speech infuriates the sanctimonious, judgemental, pharisaical, pietistic
portion of our populace who are hypocritically self righteously pious. God's little helpers. They don't mind if you are gay if you don't show it or speak about it or be too visible in the landscape and if you realize you are doomed for all eternity.

If you have doubt about Adam's voice and talent just compare Adam's performances at Royal Albert Hall with performances of Underwood on youtube and you'll see how talented Adam is with his stage presence and his impeccable voice. Don't waiver because of bunch of nos. on charts. Adam will be here for a long hall. His passion is music and this alone will keep him around for a long time.

If Adam was in the closet or became a mediocre non threatening artist who conformed to what is deemed acceptable by society he would be massively successful but he would not be true to who he is and I doubt Adam would choose success over personal happiness or hiding who he is. As he keeps saying he is genuinely shocked by how much gay gay gay dominates his interviews and career as a whole since he was brought up in a very liberal home and environment where it was not a big deal and having been in the arts from and early age he was accepted in that world as well. Now that he is mainstream I think he is realising just how much being openly gay is a novelty for a lot of people who unfortunately would rather focus on that as opposed to his music. As for his relationship it's the interviewers who ask and if Adam brings it up I can't fault him because he seems to be excited and happy about his current situation and given that he wears his heart on his sleeve its bound to come up.

Jack Shears has a LOT of male fans..was looking through his feed and sooo many HOT male fans reply his tweets and are a big part of his followers. I know Adam would be happy if he had more male fans given by how much he retweets or replies to his fan boys. As one of his international fans, I am still amazed how much younger and more diverse Adam's fan base is outside of the US...shows we know a good thing when we see it :)

On brighter side Adam's NCOE MV on youtube/vevo got over 3 million views in three weeks. Yay!!!

If people proclaim they believe wholeheartedly in freedom of speech and artistic expression, they cannot just talk and talk; they have to be more convinced than that as in real action and open acceptance; unlike mentioned, that gay people must be subdued and less visible; otherwise this freedom of speech and expression becomes questionable. Precisely, what is prompting Adam to sing it out from the top of his voice or shout it out from atop the roof, though this is not his main mission. Not just for himself, he would have saved many from total despair.

Having prejudice is something inevitable,as kids we all have been told certain things are bad,or that we shouldn't like them with no especific reason, just maybe because our parents have had a bad experience with that or whatever...also on the TV news, every day they try to makes us feel againts certain things,as religion, or far away custom or different life style..etc..but we should decide by ourselfs, not base on other people thinking. Ususally ignorance is the main problem, when people do not know about certain things they just decided to judge it.Education and good information is the best, if you want to have an open mind.Usually people that travel a lot, have open minds, cz they understan the reasons for other people's life style, they have direct information so they can decided for the best, but for some people it's easy to judge, ignore or even be againts rather than try to understand...
Dislike someones art, or try to make other fail,or make them feel apart just because who they choose to love is ridiculous! Is something that only matters to that person.
Some people really miss amazing experienses in live cz of they closed minds..what a pity...

What makes Adam a curiosity IMHO is not that he is gay, but that he is a combination of talent, beauty, courage, confidence, and intelligence while being gay. To have exploded out of the closet as spectacularly as he did via Rolling Stone and AMA may have hurt commercially as the pushback against his bravado has been just as spectacular as evidenced by his canceled tv appearances and now radio's silent treatment. Despite the heavy yoke of sexuality on him, much credit has to go to Adam, however, as his music and his example have done more to flush out for public discourse the ignorance and hypocrisy the subject of being gay. As the lightning rod for this discussion, I could think of no one else to bring sanity to the ignorance. Adam is intelligent, articulate, and unflinchingly honest. With his Trespassing album Adam throws back the cover to reveal how the "freak" is just one of us. While his gayness may seem his Achilles heel, it is also what makes him strong. Adam knows that there will be a day when we will have talked ourselves out of our insanities. Who better to lead us out of this than someone like Adam? Thank God for His Infinite Wisdom. atm

So depressing to see US music charts is dominated by non-US artists. Wondering the amount of money they make here in US, do the pay any taxes? If not, then radios better support US artists instead cause they pay income taxes, property taxes and tons of other taxes. It helps our deficit in a way. I don't think Adele pays any US taxes cause she lives in England.

I remember one interview where Adam introduced the "gay" topic when it wasn't being discussed at all. My memory is a little fuzzy but I think the interviewer asked him which song on "Trespassing" means the most to him (or similar) and Adam talked at some length about "Outlaws of Love". However, that's the only interview I recall where Adam introduced the subject.

So agree with your "lightning rod" statement. Beautiful, intelligent post.

What I cannot understand is why these same radio stations played WWFM without any problems and now nothing. It sure feels like blackballing and is quite disheartening.

Adam is the only gay performer I can think of who gets asked so often and so personally about his sexuality. That door is open and will never close. It is part of his persona and will always be there. He is not the stereotypical gay male performer. Some stereotypical gay men are very feminine, others are buffoonish and clownishly funny. Others are shy and self-effacing. The public tends to accept these types because the are exaggerated and represent a "dysfunction" that seems ok to collectively laugh at.

But here comes Adam with his thoughtfulness and honesty and talent and openness, and GUESS WHAT? NOBODY QUITE KNOWS WHAT TO THINK ABOUT HIM! So, they go for the obvious, the most titillating. Just go for the gay. Straight people are fascinated with gay-ness. So that's where the conversation goes. Adam didn't realize it would be the main topic of conversation when he came out to the general public. But it happened. It will continue to happen because that is his public persona. If he goes into other aspects of media, others may start to accept him more. I CAN THINK OF NO OTHER GAY PERFORMER WHO GETS ASKED SO MANY PERSONAL QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS SEXUALITY AS ADAM. NOT ONE. He could choose to refuse to talk about it anymore, but that would make him look uncooperative or resistant or something. It's oo late for that now. He knows that topic is here to stay and all he can do it make it as positive as possible, which is what he is doing on a daily basis. Sauli doesn't talk about Adam, but that's not about being gay. It's about Sauli wanting to be successful on his own merits and not to be thoguht of as just being the celebrity boyfriend. Good decision on his part. But Adam can't to that about himself. The door has been opened.

With Adam, it will never be "just about the music." NEVER. It will always be about his as a gay man who is a singer. He has to develop that persona to his advantage so that he is as accepted as, for example, Elton John, Nathan Lane, Neil Patrick Harris, etc. BTW, even Nathan Lane, who often plays the buffoon/clown type of gay man, is NEVER asked personal questions about his sexuality, as least to my knowledge.

It's about ALL of ADAM, not "just the music." Always will be.

@1:44

I appreciate your lightning rod post. Thanks so much.

@DRG

I agree that ADAM will always be the gay singer because that door has been opened at the onset. My belief is that it's only ADAM who is treated this way unlike other gay celebrities is because he is in a different league from the other gay celebrities.
ADAM's beautiful magnetic charismatic persona with overflowing sex appeal is just overwhelming compared to other gay celebrities or even the straight celebrities. ADAM has more vocal and unabashed women swooning and drooling over him than straight celebrities.
And this fact actually has other macho DJ's confused, even asking fans who call in, "but you know he is gay, right?" Majority, I think, do not understand and confused about the phenomenon that is ADAM LAMBERT.

Anonymous said...

Gays are often described as sissy or girlie. But I've wondered why Adam is so boyish/masculine, to the extent girls throw bras at him at the AI tour and recently a lucky girl had a nice ride on him. Could it have been his theatre training that shaped this; having to play male roles. Regarding whether he should continue answering all the gay questions at interviews, I think he will; not so much that he has to project a polite and positive image but he said it himself that with regard to this gay issue one has to confront the problem head-on rather than try to evade. He must have tried both methods to arrive at this difficult route to take...very brave and strong man, Adam.

An article today: A TRIBUTE TO OUR OPENLY GAY PUBLISHER

http://onthemeaningofadamlambert.wordpress.com/2012/06/22/a-tribute-to-our-openly-gay-publisher/

"Ever since ADAM LAMBERT blazed into the collective consciousness of our popular culture, there have been rumblings over the perceived failure of the “gay community” to embrace this glorious emissary of out and proud gay youth."

Anonymous said...

I truly believe if ADAM didn't have to prove he was "not gay enough" and so AMA didn't have to happen, and there's not much make-up or glitter at the very start of his career, there will not be so much talk about gay, gay, gay every time. He could have delayed channeling David Bowie and that campy FYE cover at a time when he's already established himself. This generation didn't understand that androgyny but criticized it as "flaming" and so the gayness comment never stops. If this Trespassing chapter is Chapter 1 of his career, IMHO, there would not be this struggle at all.
But I don't put any blame because this is ADAM's fate and his path is different for he has a purpose in this life why he is where he is now. Everything happens for a reason. And I am here to support him all the way. His glory day shall come. I have no doubt about it. He has been so blessed and with a good heart and he is all about LOVE, PEACE and LIGHT, the reward is there for the taking.

daydreamin @ 8:40, thanks for posting that video. I saw that on another site and thought it was SO clever!

Adam has always lived a free, uninhibited lifestyle and never expected such drastic, adverse reactions from the AMA. He wasn't trying to prove anything as he has always said, rather he was just being himself. Don't forget he just left his theatre stint and so at the AMA, he was still very much in his theatre/performance psyche; similarly, regarding the glitter and the FYE cover. In short his real self like the present, more natural, but more guarded had not emerged yet at that time. But if it was now, as pointed out, the fiasco could have been avoided. He would not have let his guard down like he did at the AMA. In a nutshell, he was punished in his process of finding his real self and for being himself at that time. Look how cautious he is now; he refrains from causing anymore friction with regard to his being gay; such as not showing so much emotion to Sauli in public, not even holding hands.

Friends, thanks for the thoughtful feedback to my rant. It's so ironic that in the midst of so many "questionable" performance antics by straight singers, Adam was the one who was so greatly punished for what I feel are lesser crimes. The human psyche is so complex. Eminem rapping on and on about raping girls--OK!!!! Adam planting a smooch on Tommy--NOT OK!!!! As Adam says, "I'm just doing the best I can." He knows full well what he's up against. He knows his sales numbers and his performance opportunities. He networks well with others in show biz, VERY WELL, as a matter of fact. He has a great gift for that, to be sure. We have analyzed and examined Adam and his unique career to utter exhaustion. We do it because when all is said and done, we still love him and have faith in his future. I consider very moment I spend reading, viewing and sharing about him to be a gift. Sounds schmaltzy, I know, but that's how I feel.

Sometimes I think we know more about Adam Lambert than we do some of our own family and friends. He chooses to reveal so much to us, perhaps more than we are entitled to. It is usually the interviewer who asks Adam about being gay and he does not shy away from answering the question or commenting about his sexuality. But he does not discuss anything personal about Sauli and himself and their life together beyond admitting that he is happy and in love. There is a balance and a contentment in is life right now. Perhaps as he continues with his music career, does concerts, makes other albums or becomes involved in some other creative artistic ventures, the fact that he is gay will fall more into the background and become less important. Here is an individual who is articulate, smart, honest, and so charming in addition to being the best vocal talent in music today. When will people learn to accept him more for those qualities rather than the fact that he is also gay??

Probably after that arrest in Finland with Sauli and that non incident, Adam learned from all the negative publicity he received. At 30 he seems more mature, more content and certainly happier in his personal and professional life. And with a new album, the concerts with Queen and Elton John, I would think Adam doesn't want to be involved in anything that will jeopardize all that. Sure he can still go out and have fun, but in moderation so that some incident doesn't come back to destroy this new image of him enjoying where he is at this time in his life and his career.
