 "Lambert-Led Queen Keeps Freddie Alive"

By JIM SULLIVAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER July 24, 2014

 EXCERPTS:

"BOSTON — Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?"

"That's how Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" begins, and it's a question one might ask regarding the 21st-century Queen. It's sort of both: Queen is on the road once again without its late singer Freddie Mercury, but with an able-voiced substitute, "American Idol" winner Adam Lambert, filling Mercury's not insubstantial glitter garb. (Not that Freddie was absent, mind you. More about that later.)"

"Lambert, of course, is the dashing young fella who sang Queen songs as a kid and now gets to do so on stage in hockey arenas in front of thousands. (His own solo career is presumably on hold.) He was clearly in awe of Queen's music and band members, noting how it all seemed "surreal." "

"Witty references? There's that, too, like quoting Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie" at the close of "Now I'm Here" — "Go, go, go, little queenie!" sang Lambert. Sometimes Queen's lyrical cleverness is overlooked amid the big roar, but just latch on to any snippet from the campy "Killer Queen," about the femme fatale they describe as "gunpowder gelatin, dynamite with a laser beam." It's three minutes-plus of simultaneous put-down and salute. Lambert sang that one while stretched out on a couch that had popped up on the circular stage at the end of the catwalk. He also pretended to guzzle champagne and then spewed a long spray into the crowd, cooing, "Did I get you wet? You liked it didn't you?" "

"Queen was and remains — as Queen + Adam Lambert — an intricate weave of nasty and nice, bombastic and delicate, but ever-charming. And, yeah, they rocked us."

AI winner? Well I agree and will always see Adam as the winner. From day one on A I I just knew ths man had the "It" factor and through hard work and guts would achieve and be someone special in the business.

I liked this review. It was balanced and un-gushy, which gave it some credence. The writer seemed to like and respect Adam and felt that he was a good fit for Queen. I chuckled when I saw that Adam was and AI "winner." Technically true, but not true in so many other ways. That mistake has been made so often. Well, three more shows to go, then about three weeks off till the international part of the tour begins. Such great news about NZ probably adding a third show!

Really goofed on my last post. Said just the opposite of what I meant about Adam being an AI winner. Just flip it when you read it. Must be sleepy this morning.
