Note: This article was published on Oct. 11, 2015 so the numbers quoted may be slightly different now, nearly 2 weeks later, but in general they stand..
An interesting and thought provoking look at "Ghost Town" from the standpoint of numbers analysis i.e. Global & US iTunes standings, Streaming, Shazam #'s, Media Traffic Global Singles Chart, Kworb.net rankings, and more.. Also compares it to Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" and why we may perhaps consider Adam's "Ghost Town" to be ahead of that song globally. And a hit...
Quotes from the article: Be sure to read the entire article to see how "Ghost Town" has done worldwide. And is it a "hit" in the truest sense of the word??

The lead single from Adam Lambert’s third studio album has been praised for a lot of things. It was a clear step up from the commercial performance of “Better than I Know Myself” and “Never Close Our Eyes.” It posted strong early audience feedback from pop radio listeners and ultimately climbed into the top 20 of both the pop songs and adult pop songs airplay charts, and it has spent a solid 16 weeks (so far) on the Hot 100. Moreover, it has become an undisputed hit in several countries overseas, peaking in the top 15 in: Germany, Australia, Poland, South Africa, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Russia.
I’m going to make the case that “Ghost Town” IS a hit. And, I am going to start by comparing it to “Bad Blood.”

I read the article and I'm not a numbers person but I found it extremely informative and it made me feel very good about GT and it's position globally by different chart standards. Yes, it is a hit!!!! GT may not have skyrocketed to the top of the US charts as we know it but all in all it has staying power! It is still doing it's thing in many countries of the world. I, for one, am very proud of Adam and his team for producing GT. It definitely gained familiarity around the world as we see when he performed it in so many different countries including RIR and people knew the words.
I liked what the article explained (although I couldn't understand all of it) but it was very comprehensive.
I think this young man has worked hard to find/put together all these numbers related to Adam's and Taylor Swift's songs,no offense, what a waste of time and energy! Ghost Town is a hit because it is a good song with interesting lyrics ,there's no comparison between the 2 songs played by 2 different singers with a different background, even if they, both, were produced by Max Martin.Let us be honest, whatever TS will be singing in a hundred years' time(joking) , be it Mary Has a Little Lamb, it will instantly become a hit because American young people have a TS fixation, because the show biz is a world currently dominated by female singers, because mountains of money are invested in her career , and because the young lady is pretty and stylish .
OK!! Now let's compare ADAM to someone other than Taylor Swift (my least liked pop singer) Vocally!! That is where the comparison begins & ends ... I don't care if she sells a gazillion more records than ADAM ... I can't make it through ONE song by her ... especially NOT Bad Blood!! Most of her lyrics are vapid & I can't even begin to watch her videos!! Sorry ... but that is MY Opinion!!

This is what I think...if I were this young man's parent and paying for him to go to law school, I would close the account.
I think this is a very interesting article; a couple of the author's responses in the comments section are even more interesting. He is clearly an Adam fan, and his analysis is thoughtful and measured.
The main point I took from the article is this: Bad Blood has huge numbers, but has dropped precipitously since it was released, while GT has had a slower, more steady burn. In my opinion, this is because GT is a much, much better song. I think Bad Blood is a god-awful song, but Taylor Swift could record herself burping the alphabet and radio would play it. And her core fanbase of adolescent girls would stream it over and over and over again.
I'm dating myself here, but when I was in 3rd grade, a group of my friends and I used to stay inside the classroom during recess to play the Patridge Family album and pretend that we were the band. If we had internet music videos back then, that group of little girls probably would have streamed "I Think I Love You" 50 times a day. It was a very cheesy song, but it appealed to kids and teens with under-developed musical tastes. I think the Taylor Swift phenomenon has similar roots.
JAK, you are clever as always! Maybe Peter is hoping to parlay his law degree into a music industry career - best of luck to him!
This guy did lots of hard core research. I'm not sure if it means much in the end. Most big hits don't become "legendary" or "forever" hits. Only a small few do that. Most huge blockbuster hits only last so long. I love Adam's success with GT. It was a breakthrough song for him and had world-wide success. ALN is proving to be very strong, too.
The most interesting part of this article, though, was the comments section. I especially liked the comment about how we perceive a singer in our heads while we listen to their music. Perception is everything. Several comments made the point that it has been Adam's "image" that has hindered him since Idol, not his voice. He simply has not been "cool to like." That seems to be changing, though. Marketability is so important.
It's hard to like a song, even a great one, when you don't think you "like" the singer.
I appreciated the depth and extent of the author's analysis, and it certainly provides insight into the music industry as it exists today. Like it or not, the stats he presented are probably closely followed by music makers and shakers who can influence careers. I am an Adam fan new to this site, and have noted the lament that Adam has not received his due here in the US. This article has solidified my belief that Adam will be more than fine. As the world shrinks and we become increasingly global, an "international" recognition will out-weigh solitary US success. World tours are becoming the new success "marker", and on this count Adam has nothing to worry about - his Queen tours are exclamation points to his successful international solo tours.
I also agree that Adam's stage image at the start of his career was polarizing and discouraged many from appreciating the talent behind the glitter. This is not a criticism and Adam himself would not have changed anything. But the public, especially the US public, needs to resonate on some level with the people they choose to admire and be inspired by. Adam through his growth and evolution, and the changing societal mores, is entering into the realm of more reachability.
I think these issues are relevant as the Grammy Awards are forthcoming. Several articles are giving "buzz" to the usual suspects: Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars.............and sadly Kanye West. The buzz is totally towards chart toppers, so I think it is important to keep a proper perspective ( as in the article) and hope the voters focus on artistry and not the charts!
Sorry for being long-winded!
It is sad that here in the U.S. The music industry to so shallow. I live in Washington, DC and never see any promo for Adam's music. Even though some has been added it is rarely played except for the countdowns. Even with the Queen tour coming here, never saw any promo, never, not once. The concert sold only through word of mouth and social media. It amazes me how many people do not know that Adam has been touring with Queen for so long. I agree the whole AMA hurt him, as it closed some minds to him, but who needs those minds, right. In the U.S. You have to have a teenybopper base, or hip-hop or country. I hate the radio here, and most people have satellite. I'm glad Adam is doing some festivals as it will expose his talent to more people. Once he's in, he wins you over, even if it's one fan at a time.
Even the entertainment shows rarely mention him, he does much better abroad. Sorry to say we are much more interested in Justin's DI$K, or Nicki's ass. Other countries seem to be so much more willing to give him the attention he so well deserves, he's smart to travel the world. I would like to see him get a nom for best pop album, the Grammy is the one award that doesn't always pick on popularity, but talent. As for me I guess I am guilty of one thing, I would buy any Adam music without even hearing it first.. OK rant over
I object to any comparison of Adam's music to that of Taylor Swift. She's a perfect example of an artist who is more image than talent. However, I suppose she serves a purpose for young teens. There are very few artists who COULD be compared to Adam. In fact, many of the current chart toppers are mediocre at best in the talent department. I guess Bruno Mars and Adam could be compared. Adam and Lady Gaga would be on an equal level I suppose. I just don't see Taylor as anything but a lightweight regardless of how many millions she made last year.
If you are speaking of the article, there was no comparison of Taylor and Adam as artists - it was strictly about the measurement of commercial success and the meaning of the numbers behind it. Taylor was chosen because she is the #1 pop selling artist at this moment. It was not a measurement or comparison of talent.
speaking just as a radio listener, Ghost town Rules adam is so talented and handsome he doesn't need to be NSFW to be a winner!

Unfortunately, commercial success is a vital criteria in evaluating a pop singer's success.Success which means everything our fellow fans enumerated in their posts: image that is also a consumer good, it is the main variable of the equation of what show biz has become for decades, forgettable , easy songs, hastily replaced by other forgettable, easy songs, Which of you remembers who won the Billboard Music Awards last year , I only remember that it was Justin Timberlake's year.I salute your tempered optimism, as for me I'm having a hard time trying to figure out whether artistry has the same meaning for us, music lovers and for them , labels, the so often manipulative media, even musicians/producers, the "power brokers" , they who can influence the public taste decisively. The Alpha and Omega of all businesses is profit, why should the show business be an exception ? Methinks Euterpe turned into a greedy, shrewd businesswoman! lol
