Best: Adam Lambert's "Mad World," Season 8

Often considered the gold standard when it comes to American Idol performances (and perhaps even the pinnacle of the entire series), Adam Lambert's rendition of Tears for Fears' "Mad World" was so good that he was widely considered the presumptive winner for the next six weeks — until, of course, the slow-but-steady hand of Kris Allen (along with some help of controversial "power texts") yanked the Season 8 crown off his head at the last minute. Fun fact: Lambert's version of "Mad World" was actually a cover of a cover by a singer/songwriter named Gary Jules that was featured in the 2001 cult film, Donnie Darko.

Yes... but then again EVERY SONG he sang on Idol was extraordinary. I don't find it that easy to pick just one.....every one was a "Master Class"!

My heart couldn't wait for him to sing each week - such a rush.

I can't even count how many times I've watched it. I remember sending it to my son, because he was a Donnie Dario fan, and I remember hearing that song during the movie......I never get tired of seeing it.

Adam's performance of "Mad World" is my son's favorite Adam Lambert performance. He's Adam's age, it had similar meaning to him, a helped to hook him as a fan. He was thrilled to see Adam perform it live at one of his concerts.

Each week we waited just to see what he would do and we were never disappointed. He even made Plsy That Funky Music work!

Adam took AI by the horns and just brought it to its knees. He owned it, he slayed it, he took it to heights unknown. He's why I watched. He grabbed my heart and never let go. So many favorites come to mind. I hope he is a judge on the new AI and gets the exposure and benefits he so well deserves. Mad World=Sublime If I Can't Have Your=Genius Whole Lotta Love=Magic Beth=Heartrending

I could go on and on.

You said it all, Dee R Gee.

Do you remember what it was like...having to wait a week to see Adam again... each time such anticipation...being completely immersed in his performance....and then briefly sated.....only to begin the cycle for the next week all over. We never saw/heard enough of him!

In my 84 years I have never had an experience like this. It was like all the ingredients I loved in a singer/entertainer/actor/man.... had finally converged into one perfect package. Suddenly all the "i's" were dotted and all the "t's" were crossed....and IT WAS ADAM!....a magic, fearless, inspired, uniquely gifted performer....and the world has never been the same!

Nanbert, I feel exactly the same way.

You can add me to your list too Nanbert!! That feeling has never lessened nor gone away since AI 8 ... every week I waited to watch the ADAM LAMBERT Show ... then turned it off after his performance but they out smarted me & kept putting ADAM on at the end of the show so I had to watch the others so I wouldn't miss ADAM!! Sneaky but clever ... they knew they had a GEM when ADAM auditioned!! Now I'm waiting for the QAL tours to start so I can scour the internet for all the concerts!! Can't wait to see what new musical delights the guys are planning for us!! Is it JUNE yet?? LOL

Amen to all above . . . so glad they mentioned "power texts"

I try to explain this to people about Adam's loss but they don't get it!

No worry Adam is doing great . . love seeing his picture when the advertise

American Idol with the winners.

blu....yes, I was happy to see that "power texts" remark too.....there should have been a lot more of that discussed earlier and often since then. The "runner-up" tag that was used for Adam was a "hurdle" that should never have been needed to be overcome.... anyone who followed Season 8 of AI KNEW who won that season!

I've often thought of what a shock that loss must have been for Adam...as it was for us...and most of America. He had to have known that the win was in his pocket... everyone knew...even Kris knew. But Adam was SO quick to congratulate Kris and celebrate Kris's win....what a classy guy he was!!!!

For what it's worth, I've always felt that Adam's later controversial AMA performance was a direct result of that fateful loss on American Idol... he must have felt that it was due to a reaction against his sexuality... and his performance on AMA was a defiant response to that....his only "display" of anger against his supposed rebuff by the public because he was gay. Plus, giving the audience "the finger" at the end of the performance was more proof of his defiant display, IMO. Can you blame him?
