A breathtakingly beautiful song...written by Brian May.

It's the love theme from Queen's soundtrack for the 1986 science/fantasy movie "Highlander"...which was about an ages-old battle among immortals. The song "Who Wants To Live Forever"was about the tragedy of the love between an immortal warrior and a mortal woman, who grew old and died, while the warrior remained always the same.

The entire soundtrack was Queen's music...wonderful...but I remember being especially transfixed by "Who Wants To Live Forever".

I personally prefer Adam's crystalline voice for this song. And Brian once said he still gets goosebumps when Adam sings it.

If anyone would like to compare Freddie's rendition of "Who Wants To Live Forever", here's a video from Queen's official videos....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jtpf8N5IDE

Interesting that Brian starts it out...playing an organ...then Freddie comes out sporting a tux, and sings before a large orchestra.

Of course, look for... Highlander - "Who wants to live Forever" on youtube and you can hear a slightly different version of Freddie singing it for the soundtrack, including scenes from the movie related to it.

Here's the Highlander video I mentioned above, evidently using the same version as above...i.e. starting off with Brian first...then completed by Freddie. You can see how the song relates to the touching love story.

Timeline: Highlander was released in 1986. Freddie died in 1991.

P.S. "Who Wants To Live Forever" is in the Queen Album "A Kind of Magic", released in 1986.

The SUBJECT was .... WHY/WHEN Brian "composed" WWTLF..

What happened 9 years later is irrelevent to WHY/WHEN.... however touching/true.

No matter, being a history buff does not enhance the indisputable beauty of WWTLF, nor detract one whit from the enjoyment of it by all.

Lam My there is something not quite right with you. From your bizarre "poems" and fighting here? Perhaps some time to step back and reflect.

Nanbert as always your posts are spot on

Whatever.... facts are facts. I was merely correcting some misinformation about the ORIGIN of "Who Wants To Live Forever"...when and why Brian "composed" it...for Glamberts' information.

Lam-My wrote (above)..."But in his despair, when Brian WROTE this song.."
and
"Helloo Dr. Brian...you thought Queen would be finished after Freddie Mercury DIED and so you WROTE...Who dares to love forever...."
and
"...I read that COMPOSING WWTLF saved you from total depression/despair".

YOUR words, right there above in black and white...but INCORRECT information that I felt should be corrected, since this is an Adam Lambert fansite (and Queen's by association).

Brian "wrote/composed" WWTLF because he (Queen)was hired to do it for the movie "Highlander"....NOT out of despair over Freddie's loss...Freddie was alive, well, and recorded it...as the video above shows.

Also, I would have written these same things regardless of who made those statements, to be certain that we Glamberts are correctly informed about all things Adam/Queen.

So relax...everyone makes mistakes...even you! Even me! No Big Deal.

I have read that WWTLF was written around the time Freddie was becoming ill (circa 1986) & that he never sang the song live in concert because of his ill-health. It was a low point in Brian's life also because of losing his father. This is what I've read & it is Brian (& Freddie when he was alive) & those close to them who know what actually happened.

Here's some information I found on wikipedia about the soundtrack to "Highlander".....................

"Soundtrack[edit]

The Highlander original orchestral score was composed by Michael Kamen. The British rock band Marillion turned down the chance to record the soundtrack because they were on a world tour, a missed opportunity which guitarist Steve Rothery later said he regretted.[14] The band's Scottish lead singer, Fish, had also accepted a part in the film but pulled out because of the scheduling conflict.[15] The eventual soundtrack includes several songs by Queen, such as "A Kind of Magic" and "Princes of the Universe" (the latter also being used for the Highlander television series title sequence).[16] Queen wrote many of the songs specifically to match the mood of the scenes when the songs play, notably Brian May's "Who Wants to Live Forever", concerning the doomed love of Connor and his wife Heather.

Despite a mention in the end credits, to date a complete soundtrack album for Highlander has not been released. However, Queen's 1986 album A Kind of Magic features most of the songs from the film (although sometimes in different arrangements). Songs from the film that appear on the album are "Princes of the Universe", "Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme)" (the album version includes snippets of dialogue from the film), "One Year of Love", "Don't Lose Your Head", "Who Wants to Live Forever", and "A Kind of Magic". The album and single edits of "A Kind of Magic" feature a different mix from the one in the film; a 2011 re-release of the album includes the long-unreleased Highlander version of the song. The album does not include Queen's recording of "Theme from New York, New York", which features briefly in Highlander. "Hammer to Fall", a Queen song heard playing from a car radio in one scene, was from an earlier album, The Works.

The 1995 CD Highlander: The Original Scores includes five cues from Kamen's Highlander
score (along with six cues from Stewart Copeland's Highlander II score, and four cues from J. Peter Robinson's Highlander III score). Furthermore, a rearrangement of an excerpt from Kamen's score (specifically, the beginning of the track "The Quickening") was used as the theme music for New Line Cinema's logo indent in the late 1990s and early 2000s."

Thanks for the info, fluttsp.....My point was that WWTLF was "composed" in 1986 by Brian for the 1986 "Highlander", and Freddie recorded it and an Official Queen Video of it then. It was included in the album "A Kind of Magic" released in 1986.

Therefore, WWTLF could NOT have been "composed" because of/during Brian's despair/depression over Freddie's death in 1991, as well as Brian's father's death, also in 1991.

The timeline/motive of WWTLF needed correction.

fluttsp....it appears that your information was not correct. Freddie DID sing WWTLF live in concert after all.....

He certainly seemed robust at that time.

Not to belabor this conversation but two more sources of the history of "Who Wants To Live Forever", composed by Brian May of Queen, after he viewed the film before it was released, based upon a scene from the film..

http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=7683

And look up "Who Wants To Live Forever" on Wikipedia.. which also gives the story of how the song came to be.

Sorry I'm away from my computer so could only post the link..

Peace.

One more comment: "Who Wants To Live Forever" is such a stunningly beautiful and emotionally charged song, particularly when sung by someone with an incredibly nuanced voice. I sadly never witnessed the live performances by Queen when Freddie Mercury was still alive, but I've been so blessed to be there in a live setting when Adam Lambert has sung WWTLF with the remaining original members of Queen, Dr. Brian May and Roger Taylor. The first time was at the iHeartRadio Festval in Las Vegas, and since then 5 more times live during the 2014 and the most recent 2017 tour. Each and every time is a wonderment and brings tears to my eyes. I'm so grateful to Dr. Brian May, Roger Taylor, and Adam Lambert for keeping the performances of the song alive for fans worldwide.

Ah ha... Glitzylady has arrived!

I just posted a video link of Freddie Mercury singing WWTLF during a live concert right above your two postings here on this thread. Scroll up a bit and you'll see it. Looks like it's from S.A. and professionally filmed...good picture, good sound.

It was a surprise that I just ran across. Neither fluttsp nor I thought there was a record of Freddie singing it live in concert, but it appears he did. Much better than that hokey Official Queen Video, IMO.

I'm happy to have seen Freddie sing WWTLF live in concert. It just confirms my opinion that Adam's rendition is miles BETTER, IMO... especially if you just close your eyes while listening. Give it a try. I much prefer Adam's extraordinary voice....for everything!

Thanks for posting, glitzylady.

There is so much written about celebrities, past & present, who knows what to believe.

I've read that, unlike Adam, Freddie didn't receive any formal voice training so I think he had a mighty fine voice given that he received no formal vocal training. If this indeed is true, he delivered Queen's songs, many written by him solely, to perfection.

BTW Nanbert, you've said you haven't seen Freddie live in concert - you've seen YouTube clips of Freddie singing live in concert which is a whole lot different to actually seeing/hearing Queen with Freddie LIVE IN CONCERT. Watching YouTube clips pales into insignificance compared to the real thing, but I know you'll continue to believe what you believe & that's your prerogative. Different strokes for different folks.

It's sad (for me) that "The Show Must Go On" is not included in the setlist for this QAL concert tour - it's one of my absolute faves - but I guess it's too taxing for Adam to sing night after night, along with "Who Wants To Live Forever". He didn't sing it at every concert with the previous QAL concert tour.

I enjoy her 'bizarre' poems. I find them a refreshing change from the comments on AL's clothes, holes in clothes, hair, make-up, good looks, and so on.
