Entertainment Weekly: American Idol's 30 All-Time Best Performances

Filed Under ( ) by Admin on Wednesday, May 11, 2011

'Mad World' is #2 on their list. David Cook's 'The World I Know' topped the ranking.

2. Adam Lambert, ''Mad World''

Bathed in a spotlight and separated from his usual thrills and frills, Adam used Songs From the Year They Were Born Week to allow us to focus on just two things: Adam and his voice. And we wouldn't have wanted it any other way: ''Mad World'' was haunting, majestic, and downright beautiful. Proving that he didn't need stage antics to sell a song, Adam's version of the Tears for Fears song (inspired by Gary Jules' cover) managed to be both gentle and commanding at once. Kris Allen might have been crowned the victor, but season 8 will always belong to the runner-up's ''Mad World.''

The Q102 Ultimate Idol Bracket is still going on and Adam only has 49.42% of the vote. I don't know what happened and why Adam's numbers are going down. But please keeping voting for him as many times as possible:

Nothing against David, but
from a non-American Am Idol fan's perspective Adam's performance of Mad World should be nr 1 on this list...
Heck, all his performances on Am Idol should be on top, cause he's the only true International Star (to come out of Am Idol)!!!

And that's the truth

I loved Adam's version of "Mad World" on Idol.so beautiful..I liked the slower version, rather than the faster version he sang on the GNT & on the live acoustic version album. Please, fans,Adam is also losing many votes on the Idol of the month( I think it happened last night & B C gained a lot.)Adam was about 340 votes ahead,& now he's about 270 votes ahead, but that's NOT that much, really.B C's fans vote hard. The direct link is http://tweeter.faxo.com/american_idol_of_the_month/2011/05 vote for both polls!!

So glad to see this performance getting the recognition it deserves .... #1 or 2, we know how irrelevant numbers are. The fact that these two performances are still hitting #1 and 2 after 2 and 3 years, is remarkable and they will continue to stand out for years to come because they are truly perfect and unforgettable. This recognition is over ALL other winners and contestants, all the AI performances of Kelly and Carrie and David A., etc. The real secret here is that Adam's studio version of Mad World is vocally perfect and stunning, actually far greater than the standing ovation version of TV. I really love David Cook, I think he is a remarkably sincere, cool, emotion filled singer but here is the difference, in my opinion .... he remains exactly as he was on AI, has peaked as far as voice quality and performance. Adam, on the other hand, well, you know .... he is LIMITLESS. I love Mad World but it does not compare with Sleepwalker or Soaked and....things that are to come.

For me, Adam Lambert set the bar so high during season 8 of AI with each and every song he performed, that since then I have just lost interest in AI. It seems to have had its time in the past 10 years and the new judges really don't add much. Steven just repeats the same thing(that was beautiful) and JLO seems to be there for a fashion show of hair and clothes. And Randy, well, not much coming from him either. MAD WORLD and every song that Adam peformed were just so special, different and amazing. He is in a league of his own and no one will come close to him in talent, charisma, self-confidence and stage presence. I like David Cook, but Adam Lambert will always be #1 on any list of AI performances .

Well said anon @ 3:27. Totally agree with you!!!!

Anonymous said...

Mad World should have been # 1...I agree with the others that think so also.I don't even remember David Cook's song( really)How is David A beating Adam on the q102 poll?darn!!Just now,it was Adam-49.37% & Archie-50.63% VOTE!!

Anonymous said...

Mad World should have been #1. I think Adam's best vocal performance was A Change is Gonna Come. Boy we didn't really know at the time what that would mean. How Adam is changing people one at a time and certainly how he has changed our lives. Now I am an obsessed person!lol

Some very ugly comments on EW but also some nice ones. You might want to add some more nice ones :))

@coloforadam,
agree with all you said. I have the studio version of Mad world on a cd in my car, and turned up loud, its so perfect.
EW has also got a poll running for the ultimate Idol, Adam is in 3rd or 4th place at the moment...
I liked David Cook on Idol, brought his cd along with DA's, they are the only other Idols cds I've brought (although only listened to them once or twice), but apart from Billie Jean i couldn't name you one song he sang on Idol(and I only know that because thats the one I see in articles and comments the most, don't actually remember the performance), whereas I can name every one of Adams....and a couple of DA's. None of the others have left me wanting to rewatch their performances again and again....and again, google their name 10 times a day, look for every bit of info, listen to their music all the time. So, regardless of what these polls say, Adam is my number 1 and always will be....although it would be nice for everyone else to see it too.

Mad World was the ulimtate of all time!
Nothing outshone that!

Adam is international whereas David Cook, nice guy as he is, has'nt hit anything overseas and is vertially unknown. Adam is now ruling the globe which tell you something for sure!

HK Fan - I think David C. sang "World I Know" on Goodmorning America when he was on with Adam and Kris. Can't be sure though as I was, as usual, dumbstruck by Adam, singing "Starlight". It is kinda cool though that they ended up with top mentions together - they like each other and respect each other's work. Sweeeeeeet!!

I've got a huge respect for David Cook because he gave some stunning performances in AIS7 but sadly i can't recall any since i never followed him. What i know is that he inspired Adam with how he strategized during his season.

I will never get tired of watching Adam's AIS8 videos. I can't even pick a favorite because each stellar performance had it's own background story which made it so unique and special. A personal choice will always depend on my mood but generally i love watching all and would savor how he captivated my soul throughout the season. That to me was the Adam Lambert Show which turned out to be the best 5 months of my life, eagerly looking forward to what he was gonna do next. I don't remember getting disappointed because he nailed it week after week after week. And he showed the world what a consummate performance artist is made of. I got hooked upon hearing I CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION and the rest is history :D

Entertainment Weekly thanks for recognizing Adam's exquisite talent and artistry in this one.

Adam was the only memorable thing to come out of that ridiculous amateur show, imo

Haley killed it again on AI with her 2nd song standing O. The first of course she was given negatives a bit for from Randy and JLO. Adam is right about her voice. James to me was the most mediocre of all, but they always love him.

Anonymous said...

Agree that Haley was incredible but the only one they were critical of! Really annoying how they praise the other mediocre performances. I really think this show has sunk to new depths..Randy especially.. why are they pimping James - he is so out of tune..

Thank you EW for honoring Adam! He deserves every accolade coming his way. In my opinion (and many others) Adam will always be #1 on any Idol list that is produced. He was and is the ultimate vocalist and entertainer. His stage presence is mesmerizing....you just can't take your eyes off him. Not to mention how incredibly gorgeous he is. He's definitely the whole package. I started following Adam (and only Adam) from the first day he auditioned on AI. I knew this man was going to be a star! He has outshone everyone else and his talent cannot be denied. I believe just like Paula that he will be iconic. Can't wait for the 2nd album release because I know we are all in for another fantastic treat.

Q102 NEED TO VOTE FOR ADAM FOR FAVORITE IDOL. ADAM VS DAVID A. AND DAVID IS AHEAD. HERE IS THE SITE http://www.q102.com/pages/ultimate-idol/index.html

Watched Idol...still nothing for me.

David Cook ahead of Adam is puzzling...I'd almost forgotten him. Has he released a lot more records than Adam has? I'll look up his performance and refresh my mind. I just remember him a nice guy, sort of like Kris....

Tonight JD sang "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. Season 8 sang this fantastic song on their Live American Idol Tour in the summer of 2009. Adan took all the glory notes at the end of the song effortlessly. I was really waiting to see if JD could reach the same high note ending that Adam did. I'm sure he copied what Adam performed in Season 8. JD did reach the notes so kudos to him for that but definitely not as powerfully soaring as Adam did.

CT

OOPs! that should be "Adam took all the glory notes"....

CT

Okay, looked up The World I Know by David Cook,
I'm glad EW had kind words for Adam, but no way was Cook's performance and song choice better!

And that's my completely unbiased opinion! :-)

Been browsing around with the AI performances, I think Haley & Scotty should take the top two. I'm not a country fan, but Scotty sounds unique & very traditional in the country genre. Haley has a beautiful voice but too much growling for me but I can see where she does have a sexy voice too.
I truly believe tho that the sexiest song ever on AI is ROF or WLL, & the best AI performance for me is ACIGC !!!!! just watched Adam sang i & it still gives me chills & tears . Do not undrstand it, I thought at that moment Adam had definitely won because there was no other person in this world more deserving & that he could not be denied!! His voice is absolutely amazing!!!! I really miss Adam performing , so glad he's going to Russia & Canada!!
Be safe & happy Adam , Monte, Tommy, & to all !!! Mwah!! K

I'm voting my butt off on Ultimate poll. I think lots of Adam fans still are. The Archie fans are fierce, too, and I'm sure they've got anti-Adam support. So voters for Archie aren't necessarily Archie fans. That's why I hate these polls. We just have to keep at it.

Anonymous said...

I voted yesterday about 20 times and didn't see it move a bit. Will still try however, I love haley, she better not go home tonight!

Anonymous said...

I read Adam's critiques on the Top 4 performances and they are so much more refreshing and on point than the mundane ones we've been hearing. S10 seems to have picked up steam somewhat, a bit more convincing and exciting. The best part was Lady Gaga trying to get JD to move his hips; later, he said he didn't like that. Oops, that's whose department!

We are of course always on Team Adam. I also think that Adam ruled the Idol stage and it is hard to not compare. These polls are rather a definition of fans voting rather than any actual ability of these artists. I also think David Cook is very good.

Anonymous said...

As a body of work, Adam's performances on AI stand miles above the others, and there have been some good ones! I wish I could show his whole season of songs to anyone who gives the eye-roll about him. His versatility is beyond belief and he NAILED every song. Not a week one in the bunch.

Anonymous said...

Adam is ruling the world and will continue to increase his fan base when his next album comes out. No one can touch Adam on AI, each performance amazing and unique. It is hard to pick a favorite, but seeing Simon give Adam a standing ovation made my heart soar. I re watch Adam's performances on you tube all the time and am always blown away!!!!
