There's a thread over at mjsbigblog discussing the career of ADAM.
Saying the problem with radio is because ADAM does not have a distinct voice to be recognized as the one singing.
That's because he has a trained voice thus perfect technically why it's not distinct because it's the flaws that makes one voice distinctive.

Way to set the record straight. Great men can like Adam Lambert. He in fact is the sexest man alive. Who wouldn't want to enjoy him and most of all his music. You should start a fan club!!!

OT - dont think this has been reported but in the June 11th edition of People magazine on p. 53 under Chucks Playlist of What I'm Rocking Now is a short blurb about Adam -"Trespassing - Somewhere Freddie Mercury is breaking out the spandex and working it to the stomping Queen-like title tune from Lamberts latest" Amen brother! We had a guy whose tag was SARGE on this site when FYE first came out and was not picking up radio plays. Some of you must remember his comments.

He had been a roadie for many years with lots of big bands. He thought Adam's voice was perfection, but he didn't think he'd be a big hit on radio. His reason was because Adam sang every song with a different voice. His voice was not distinctive, he meant it was not immediately recognizable as Adam, unless, like us, we knew every song he recorded. He explained that to be successful your voice was obvious as you in the first line of the song. Anyone could say...That's Johnny Mathis, that's Elvis, etc.etc. They sounded the same, just the songs changed. Radio listeners wanted that instant recognition.

He got a lot of flak from several commenters....but he explained that he felt it probably was beause Adam was so gifted that he CHOSE to sound different. His view was that listeners wanted the familiarity of the artist's voice on every recording.

I understood what he meant. Adam is a singer of "a hundred voices".

He only made a few comments then disappeared, he wasn't getting thru to many who sort of "jumped" him.

I recently played NCOE for my sister's boyfriend and can you believe not even ten seconds into the first verse he told me that sounds like a Bruno Mars song...I kid you not and when I told him it was Adam Lambert who sang it he told me well it sounded to him like Bruno so finally I told him that it was indeed Bruno that wrote the song and he was like you see. I get why some people say he doesn't have a distinct voice because even of the amazing reviews he was getting a lot of critics were saying this song sounds Justin Timberlake, this one sounds like Prince etc and then proceeded to qualify it with but sang in an amazing Adam Lambert way with great vocals.

My point is that none of them said that sounds like a AL original or this is distinctly Adam so maybe they do have a point and maybe Adam is yet to find that one song or one sound that resonates so deeply with everyone so that next time someone who is a non fan hears a couple of lines from a song they will be like hey that is sooo Adam Lambert. His vocals are perfect and his talent is infinite but radio for some reason seems to be a hard sell for him but I have sooo much hope that that will change.

OT - just read that the Graham Norton Show will air in Britain on the 22nd of this month but not until June 30th on BBC America. Guess another week wont matter even tho that's the same date as the Kiev performance. . . . Adamluv

I'm not wanting to jump on anyone, but I think I have to disagree that Adam doesn't have a "distinctive" voice and "identifiable radio voice. He DOES have a variety of styles and "voices" for sure. But if the experts say so, then it must be true, right?? Hmmmm.. My question is this: Why did so many people fall in love with him on Idol?? And continue to love his voice, and him, three years later? Perhaps because he has an amazing voice and can sing any style of music, and do it well. Imagine that!! I just find the concept that his voice is not easily recognizable and therefore not radio play material, to be a more than a little nonsensical. And sad if actually true. There are plenty of generic and average voices out there on the radio who are like other singers...and nearly indistinguishable from the others. And yet they are played and are successful.. So that premise that Adam will not be successful because of his amazing and perfect voice, that he can change up to some entirely different sound and style depending on the music, doesn't make any sense to me..But what do I know??? Well, for one thing, Adam has some GREAT music that he's having to fight to get on the radio right now. And asking us to request. Craziness. And unbelievable to me. Weird. Maybe radio will continue to ignore him...but I believe he will have great success in the long run....

By many voices, they must have meant many octaves, but he uses all those voices/octaves -- to a greater or lesser extent -- in EACH song he sings. I think he has an extremely distinctive sound.

I think the answer lies elsewhere. A Chicago paper said it would take a while, but the general populace would eventually catch on. Give it time.

One song that HAS Adam's whole vocal range is RUNNIN'. I was just listening to Liam McEwen's Adam Lambert hour from yesterday and at the end of the song he said that RUNNIN' is the song that has gotten the most requests ever on his weekly one-hour show. His show has now been on for more than a year (maybe 2). IT'S A HIT AND I REALLY HOPE THAT ADAM CHOOSES IT AS HIS NEXT SINGLE. With that song, he would not be stuck with the top-40 stations. That song can be played on top-40 stations but also on soft rock, hard rock, alternative, any type of station. COME ON ADAM, DARE TO CHOOSE SOMETHING OTHER THAN A DANCE TUNE.

I guess we have to know what demographic comprises the radio listening/itunesbuying/album purchasing audience. I would surmise it is the tween, teen group and the early twenties. Just listen to what we hear on the radio and then see on the videos. Just because you have a great voice doesn't seem to count for much in the music business today. So someone like Adam Lambert with an amazing vocal talent and stage presence just has to fight his way among all the untalented, mumbling, repetitious performers out there vying for that number one single or album. In spite of it all, I think Adam will have longevity in the music business because he just is so different and can sing anything amazingly well. He may not reach the superstardom so many of us want for him, but he will be around for a long time in music and other creative arts. And I will continue to support him in whatever he choses to do or the kind of songs he decides to record and perform.

I can see Adam spending part of his time in London in the future. He seems to enjoy the people, the lifestyle and the culture there. And hopefully the paparazzi would give him more privacy than he has here. But that is the price one pays for fame and I think Adam realizes that his life will never be the same. However, all celebs are entitled to private time away from the reporters and cameras to be with family and friends and loved ones.

To the previous poster, what exactly would you call superstardom? Adam Lambert's name is known worldwide, his voice is known worldwide, he is a superstar. I for one don't want him to become a JB fad or have a couple of #1 singles and then disappear like so many of the past ten year artists.

Secondly, who cares that Jordin S. has a high number of followers? Can anyone here name me just one song from her? I can't name any. But I'm sure the whole world knows about 'whattaya want from me'. Just sayin...

Why did so many fall in love with him on Idol? Come on, it was probably half voice but also half he was so darn good looking. The hair, the clothes, the swagger, the sex appeal and he could sing!

I get completely that Adam doesn/t always sound like Adam. He doesn't. Fever? Soaked ? Chokehold ? Underneath? Same guy?

I also remember the comments from Sarge (stuck in my mind cause my husband was called Sarge in the military). He wasn't insulting Adam he was offering his opinion on the lack of radio acceptance.
He didn't say Adam wouldn't be a star. Many of us have said how much better he is in person at live performances.

I'm sure as more and more of the world see and hear him, he'll hit it big. He's too stunning to be ignored.

Think about it, distinctive recording successes, Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, Justin Beiber.
Their songs all sound alike. A lot of people say Gaga's songs sound alike.
Maybe Adam's versatility is working against him. We know he's an astounding talent but we have been puzzled why the masses don't automatically buy everything he records. Maybe the public likes same old, same old.

Oh, yes, that too! : ))) Adam is very very easy on the eyes....and the rest of what you said of course. And he is a stunning live performer. And quite honestly, recordings do not adequately capture the complete experience of listening to Adam sing.

8:16 I think that is cool, I'd love to hear someone sing it someday. They have every other song available glad they have Adam's song too.

Adam's Twitter total will top 2 million in time. I think his voice in incredibly distinctive. He doesn't sound like anyone else. And his own songs have great variety. Maybe this works against him? Too much talent and diversity? The top five or so singers do seem to put out a variation of the same old song each time. And guess what? That same old song variation goes to the top of the charts each time. Sigh.

Anyway, I was very pleased to see so many nice things said about Adam though many offered reasons why they think he's having a bit of a rough go! Nothing mean. That's a step up!

And I agree that while I like both BTIKM and NCOE as singles meant to catch the audience's attention, they aren't exactly "barn burners".
RCA needs to take a chance and give the people Trespassing or Shady or Cuckoo or Underneath, something provocative. Adam's not an entertainer for kids, he's def for a grown up audience, we can handle it!

I read about the US radio play situation a lot, and I really don't get it, especially top40. Their target audience is 18 -24 year olds, I know a lot of people in that age bracket, not one of them listens to radio, they all get their music from the internet. I have have read so many times from people that say the same thing. Top 40 radio plays so much rap, crap, and the same 7 artists repeatedly, thus turning off the older demographic, who are actually the ones more likely to listen to radio, they also seem to ignore their requests.
Billboard is supposed to going to take internet listeners into account with their charts soon, so people that listen on pandora, spotify etc will maybe make a difference to the charts.

If Adam can't get radio to play very radio friendly songs such as BTIKM and NCOE what makes you think they will play something more out the box???

@anon 7.07pm jun 17th....I can name 2 songs from her, sos, and Battlefield. Nattlefields a great song and was a pretty good hit for her.

I think Adam has a distinctive voice, he may bit always sing in the same style but you know its Adam. By the Rules came on my IPod the other day for the first time, very different to his normal style and I never said anything about who it was, a short way in my 10yo daughter, said 'is this Adam?', so if a 10yo can recognise him I'm sure many adults can.

I agree with HK fan that young people don't listen to the radio much... Spotify is much in use. How do they pick up the music they listen to - I don't know (kids I know are too small yet). Do they follow the charts and listen to what is popular?

About Adam's voice - I can't say if it's recognizable or not for people, but yes he uses different kinds of styles when singing and I like it. I have thought about that many times when listening to FYE and TP albums. I think he sounds more similar singing live, on the record there's so many ways to change voice digitally too.

I have noticed that in some songs Adam sings very very softly (like Broken open and OOL). I love that more than anything. It feels like floating inside a soft cloud... :) But in some songs especially in TP album there is some kind of distortion in his voice (sorry, I don't know if this is the right word for what I try to say). It may be digitally produced because I don't hear it in live performances. Anyway, Adam can sing very different types of music (rock, strong ballads, pop, broadway, opera? etc.), and adjust his style to all of them. That's a great talent, and maybe helped by the previous career in various music productions.

Earlier there was a discussion about what the radio song should be like - simple, catchy. Maybe it's because people often listen to the radio "on the background". Many of Adam's songs feel much better if you really stop and concentrate on them. Most of the music I listen to, is that kind of music... The music you want to listen to year after year.

I agree with bouth of your comments. there are lost of "sigers" that are easy recognizable because they always sing the same type of songs with the same voice tone, cz they can't sing anything else! BUT Adam CAN! He can sing any kind of music,any song,low,high...always in a perfect way! Maybe he will need more time to get to the top and have zillions of fans, BUT once he gets there he will stay FOREVER!!
Notice that the new people that had gone to his last shows, they had "fall for him"!"You can run but you can't hide" from Adam's live!!

Yes, JAK, RCA needs to move on from the safer songs and shoot the moon with Shady or Cuckoo. Enough with the supposed radio-friendly songs. People aren't listening. I LOVE Shady the best. It's so catchy and sexy and has a great hook. Go for it, RCA!

We have a soon to be 13 year old in our family and these are the songs she likes: Trespassing, Never Close Our Eyes, Kickin In, Pop That Lock, Better Than I Know Myself. She isn't a fan of the slower songs. Just interesting.

Some really strange questions thrown at Adam here, and it's not often he ummmmmmms either. I could see him singing and running on the treadmill at the same time!

I don't think Adams voice is the problem when it comes to radio play. I think the problem is in the music and the production. Sometimes a song can sound too polished - making it sound gritty often works better with digital media...now they are clearly working on making Adam sound more raw which I love(there's a huge difference between the new and old album in that aspect)but the music needs a bit of work though.
The problem with the 2 singles is also(in my humble opinion) that they don't start with a distinguishable beat or a prelude - songs need to capture the attention of the casual listener from the beginning! No first time listener will know the lyrics but they remember bopping their heads to "this great song on the radio".

I think the younger kids (teens and tweens) don't have the life experiences yet to enjoy a slow ballad. When they've had and lost a "puppy love" then those slow songs will resonate with them more. The dance songs are timed to their heartbeats, thus familiar and more enjoyable to them. JMO

Me, at my age, give me Underneath, I Can't Let You Go, OOL, Soaked, I Just Love You for listening pleasure although I DO love to WATCH Adam sing the dancier ones.

@3:11 I must be a teen then because I loathe ballads on the radio most of the time(solely listen to radio while driving). I always switch the channel if something "sappy" comes on - If I'm going to work - well dammit I want to be in a good mood! I actually love ballads but timing is everything - I have to be in a certain reflective mood to appreciate them.

i don't think adams voice or music that is the problem, NCOE was written by Bruno Mars for goodness sake, and if it was him singing it, it would have been shooting straight to the top of the charts and being played endlessly on the radio. It seems more and more that the problem lies within the 'conservative' heads of radio......

re song choice @ anon 3.11, I t all depends on the tween...like I said my 10yo loved BTIKM when it came out, said it was the best single so far from Adam, and her first choice of song usually to play from Trespassing is Underneath (although she likes most of the others too,) she also always plays jar of hearts, and several Adele songs, all ballads.
Funnily enough, the songs she's keast likely to pick to play on trespassing are the 3 bonus songs, Broken English and OOL.

@3:43 conservative heads of radio might be a problem in the US but in Denmark(where I'm from) NCOE got a lot of radio play in the beginning - the radio stations really tried to market it and were quite positive about Adam. However very few first time listeners remember the song now...
As for Bruno Mars - yes, NCOE would sell had he sung it but that's because he already has a HUGE fan base. Once you "make it" you're golden when it comes to radio play. Bruno started his career with a very annoying song with a distinctive beat/sound... "today I don't feel like doing anything insert weird beat/sound" "The lazy song" did nothing to showcase Brunos talent but people remembered it, went to buy it and got to love all of his songs.

I don't know how many times I listened to Trespassing album from beginning to the end. I don't skip anyone of the songs like I did with FYE. I love the cohesive vibe of this album and the industrial new current sound of each song. My take is RCA should release Cuckoo as Adam's next single. Radios have ways to cover the "f" part. They have done it with other artists' songs.

It's funny but I had two songs I skipped on FYE album and 2 I skip on this new album. I skip Kickin In and Pop That Lock. On FYE I skipped Music Again and Aftermath.
However, when he started singing Aftermath on tour with just acoustic arrangement, I grew to love it. But not the noisy album rendition.

As much as I really love the variety of songs and beats on Trespassing, I don't like all the electronic noise that's thrown in on the recordings. I guess I'm a purist and extremely old fashioned.

I have to amend former statement, I also skip over Broken English when listening to album. Don't like that at all!.

AI was a stepping stone and now it's progressed to superstardom so we look forward with positivity all the way for Adam. AI, although good, is way in the haze now.
Adam even rides above all these so called 'star's in the charts, (you know the one's that can't sing live or even perform and yet still with industry backing get recording contracts, make it big because they sell well. The $ has a huge impact.
Adam is someone special, he has an aura of greatness and if you don't think so, just ask all the legend's who have come out the woodwork to acknowledge the talent that makes Adam shine. He is a bloody superstar!

ADam Lambert is the best male singer ever! Even Judges are overwhelmed by his singing( include Simon Cowell who called Adam a star!)No One can imitate him. He is the all around best singer and also drop dead gorgeous. He is a super star.
