‘American Idol XIV’ video: More hype around auditions!

**This magazine cover from May 2009 says it all..looking back to American Idol Season 8, when American Idol was still in the business of finding superstars....

EXCERPTS FROM ARTICLE:

"The only thing that we really want to see on this upcoming season above all else is talent, and bold talent. Not just kids who want to win a competition; instead, kids who want to be stars. There were some good artists last year, but maybe they were a also a few who were either too timid, or not fully ready to embrace the spotlight."

"The one thing that we definitely feel for now is that this is the season of the show that really needs to accept that label as the show that finds “superstars.” The longer that they go without some sort of major discovery like this, the more that it is going to seem like they are still trying to live off of the legacy of Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, and Kelly Clarkson. Phillip Phillips was the last winner to have any real success, and that was almost three years ago."

Lightning rarely strikes twice in the same place. It stuck in 2009 with Adam and hasn't struck since, even though a few AI alums are doing well. Adam has that certain quality, that "je ne sais quoi," that is extremely rare. It's unlikely that someone with that star quality will happen again on Idol. Viewership is down. The genre has likely run its course. But hey, good luck to the next round of singers.

Loved that post LAMBERTLUST, totally made me smile :)

That was so thrilling, that cover, back then. It's been a continual thrill ride being a fan of Adam. Fun!

Adam, Kelly & Carrie (if you like country music) are the stand-outs from this show. I also liked Jordin Sparks & a few others who didn't win but who are enjoying some success. Kelly & Jordin are the only winners I liked.

Do these reality singing shows really produce stars anymore? I have watched the Voice with some amazing singers and yet the winner never really seems to have success with his/her career. Blake has taken several performers with him on his tours and they may have some success in the country music field. The other winners haven't really been heard from. So will Idol produce a superstar this season? Who knows? What happened to last season's winner? Does anyone even remember his name? I think Adam set the bar so high with his performances and star quality, that we may never see anyone like him again on the show. Maybe Idol has run out of steam and new judges and whatever talent they audition may not be enough to bring us a super performer to to save the show.

I would assume they are certainly still hoping to find another star, but the past few years haven't boded well. Maybe this coming season will be different.

Or maybe it will be the last Glitzy

Could be...although I think Ryan Seacrest has a new contract for 2 more seasons, which would perhaps mean one more season after this upcoming one...

No matter what, I'm eternally grateful for Idol... They introduced us to Adam Lambert :))))) He's my favorite of all time, obviously... Followed by Kelly Clarkson..

I remember buying that magazine, the girl said of you really like him. I said honey, I like him better than Dr. Pepper and I really don't want to live without Dr. Pepper. She looked at me like I was nuts.... which I guess I'm a little....then she said I don't think he'll win....Besides I like Danny..To which I replied he's already won, I don't see anybody else on the cover....then I took my magazine
stuck my nose in the air and left.... and as they the rest is history.

@5:31 AM

I agree with; but, you forgot to mention that Adam Lamebrt is the biggest "stand-out" of them all; but, I guess that goes without saying!!!

5:31 big correction here:

Sorry Adam; messed up your last name. Lambert of course!!

I can't believe that I was not even aware of that magazine cover back then. How could I have missed that one? I certainly was a fan during Idol and I couldn't wait to see Adam on television every week - Ring of Fire ignited that "flame", I guess - but I think it became more of an "obsession" after Idol when I started going on fan sites etc. I have a very vivid memory though how my jaw dropped on the floor after my first google search on Adam toward the end of Idol and when "Ring of Fire" and that "Crazy" performance popped up, amongst other things. I would call it the beginning stages of an enlightening "educational" journey and an ongoing fascination!

I wish American Idol great luck this season. I think it is a great platform for young people to get a chance at breaking into the industry. Adam may have set the bar high but that doesn't mean somebody else incredible can't come along.

Adding for 8:04 am, Caleb Johnson

For glitzylady, Ryan has a one year contract (this season) with an option for another season.

I'm so glad Adam on idol is just a one day thing. AI is a ship that is sinking. Ratings have steadily plummeted for the past 6 years. Adam's talent and abilities are so far beyond that show. I'd be an insult to his career and his fans.

Yes, I'd heard that..

I think there are two nights of NYC auditions, but I could be wrong...

Even if Idol's ratings have dropped, they aren't that different from The Voice and Idol is still one of Fox's highest rated shows.

There is no shame in Adam appearing again on AI. The biggest drawback to AI is the average age of viewers. Glee's demo is much better for getting Adam younger fans which is the demo radio wants too.

A one year contract with an option sounds like a lot is riding on this season, more than if it was a two year contract.

I like American Idol better than The Voice so I hope this season does well. I'm looking forward to seeing Adam on it too.

I do hope Adam is on for two nights on AI. He just makes my TV screen glow. Nothing could keep me from watching on those nights. It will be interesting to see what happens when Ryan's contract is up. He may want to move on. He's involved in lots of things in the media. But AI does keep him in the public eye and that's a big part of maintaining a high profile.

I can't watch AI anymore. Just can't. I have seen the recent winners since Adam. All fine, just fine. It is interesting that The Voice hasn't produced a megastar. I read somewhere that Simon Cowell ants to try to get XFactor started in the U.S. again. It flopped here once, but I guess he wants to try again. It think the singing competition shows are on the wane in general.

PLEASE NOTE:

For those who are seeing the "anti robot" word recognition box when commenting:

Just ignore it and your comment will post normally.

I'll try to put up a more official thread about it later today.. At work so can't right now...

I do have a copy of this EW issue. It's tucked away in a safe place along with my Rolling Stone issue and my Details issue and lots more. Hope that collection grows with new stuff! I sure wish QAL would get a RS cover.

glitzy, thanks for the heads-up on the robot thing. Works for me to just ignore.

Can't wait to see Adam on Idol again. Also, again when his new single drops!

glitzylady: this would not post with typing in the robot space.

2:29/here

Meant to say, without typing in the robot space.

Guess it only works for some.. Perhaps won't work if not signed in. It's worth a try anyway..

Thanks for letting me know :))))

That pic sums up the Adam I first fell for - I've been in free-fall ever since.

Glitzy, it only works that way if you are signed in. Try doing it while you are signed out.

I never saw that many spam messages so I'm not sure why the recognition box is necessary here.

@Anon 11:50 PM
I'm not sure either...... :/

One good reason to be signed in... you can skip the "captcha" box :)

I had never seen it before yesterday, although I know many others have been seeing it for a while now.. I asked the blog owner about it but haven't heard back yet... so no clue.......
