"Top Earning American Idols 2014"
"American Idol's Highest-Paid Alums Though American Idol’s contestants rarely out-earn its celebrity judges, nine of the show's alums broke the million-dollar mark in 2014 year. Read on for the full list."

7. Adam Lambert:
"$2.5 million Solo tour dates and record sales accounted for much of Lambert’s earnings; after touring as the frontman of Queen, he’s set for a much higher payday on next year’s list."
Link to the full list & article:
http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eeel45fdgde/american-idols-highest-paid-alums/
NOTE: Keep in mind that the dates used by Forbes Magazine are from JUNE 1st, 2013 to JUNE 1st, 2014.. The period ended BEFORE Adam's summer tour with Queen 2014, so would NOT reflect his income from the tour..AND he'll be touring again soon this winter (2015) in the UK & Europe which will again substantially increase his income for the year ending on June 1, 2015. It also does not include his Queen + Adam Lambert performances on X-Factor UK in December 2014 or the BBC New Years Eve Queen + Adam Lambert performance..
So, with this year bringing some new solo work ie NEW ALBUM and sales associated with that, perhaps gigs (yes, please!!!) with his new music before June 1, 2015, we could see a BIG jump for Adam in his standing as a "Top Idol Earner" for 2015 and beyond!
So, how does Forbes come up with these income estimates and rankings?
These are the various sources and other factors that Forbes uses to estimate the earnings (copied from another Forbes list quoted below: "The World's Highest Paid Musicians" here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/zackomalleygreenburg/2013/11/19/the-worlds-highest-paid-musicians-2013/ which is most likely based on similar factors).
QUOTE from the above linked article:
"In order to form our list, we looked at income from June 1st, 2012 through June 1st, 2013, using data sources including Pollstar, the RIAA, Nielsen SoundScan, managers, lawyers and many of the artists themselves. We took into account concert ticket sales, royalties for recorded music and publishing, merchandise sales, endorsement deals and other business ventures. Our estimates reflect pretax income before deducting fees for agents, managers and lawyers; only living artists are eligible for the list."
Looking forward to an amazing new year in 2015 for Adam Lambert!!

Well done, Adam. I bet he will be on the top of the list next year.
Yes indeed , well done, because he didn't really do too much before he went on tour with Queen.
With the summer tour in 2014, and the winter tour in 2015, that number should change drastically.
That's not counting if he gets anything from his new album, which might be too soon to count, because even if it is done, it has to be promoted.
From mjs
As of 2009:
1. Carrie Underwood = 93 million (6 years)
2. Kelly Clarkson = 41.4 million (6 years)
3. Chris Daughtry = 30.2 million (6 years)
4. Kellie Pickler = 15.3 million (6 years)
5. Adam Lambert = 15 million (4 years)
6. Jennifer Hudson = 14.5 million (5 years)
7. Jordin Sparks = 11.8 million (4 years)
8. Scotty McCreery = 10.5 million (3 years)
9. Phillip Phillips = 10 million (2 years)
10. Fantasia Barrino = 7.5 million (3 years)
11. David Cook = 6.8 million (4 years)
12. Taylor Hicks = 6.3 million (3 years)
13. Clay Aiken = 5.7 million (3 years)
14. David Archuleta = 5.5 million (4 years)
15. Katharine McPhee = 3.1 million (3 years)
16. Kris Allen = 1.7 million (1 year)
10:31 pm, why would we care about 5 yr old numbers?
10:31 what are the numbers in parenthesis ?
Not too shabby for some kind of an "off period". I am wondering how much money Adam made with Glee. Next year he'll be way up in the rankings, likely right behind Carrie.
Well I'm not 10 31 but those numbers are the totals since 2009 of the amounts reported by Forbes and how many years the idol has been on the list. People not on the list have made under one million for that year. The older Idols of course made money before 2009 as well
Looking at the newest idols, Phillips is doing really well so far having made 5 milliion per year. Scotty and adam are on similar earnings paths making about 3.5 million per year.
The list also shows that if you sing c&w type of music, you'll get your millions 'easier' and/or faster (mainstream US, bigger crowds buy your music)
Great article and sexy pic of our guy. ;)
RosiePosie
Yep, c&w is the big thing in the US but it's not my big thing.
Country only accounts for 3 of the 11' carrie, kelly and scotty. And plenty of idols sing country and never made it. Gokey tried country but is now dong better singing christian music. Scottys runner up Alaina is a country singer but not making millions and same with casey james who is very talented and still with a major label. It's tough for anyone.
Scotty has done very well and is still gong to college while making all that money.
Adam's numbers should really shoot up on next year's Forbes list. We would all love for him to make top money for his own music. Fingers crossed for A3!
And yes, country music rules in the U.S. I'm personally not a fan by any stretch, but if a singer can break into the country music scene, they can make huge bucks.
Taylor hicks makes a nice living as a vegas lounge act. I think something like that is more likely for adam than being successful with his own music.
4:40 AM
I assume you meant Kellie Pickler.
I'm not consumed with the $$$$ Adam and all the Idols get. Adam seems to be doing well and so are 15 other Idols according to the 2009 list but that's nearly 6 years ago now. I guess there'll be an update next year.
Adam Lambert is just laughing about his earning right now!!!:) Only speculations but not accurate indeed!!:)

Hey @January 7, 2015 at 5:52 AM! If Adam becomes a lounge act in Vegas, I will be going to Vegas several times a year to see him. Lucky me!
You are entitled to your opinion but I find it such a pessimistic view for our special guy's future. LOL indeed.
It will be interesting to see how Adam's career plays out in the long-term. With the exception of the top-most acts, the majority of singers don't put out albums and do big tours on a regular basis for many years. I really don't picture Adam becoming a Vegas lounge act like Taylor Hicks, but I do see Adam maintaining a successful, busy career. Filling huge arenas on his own solo tours seems somewhat unlikely. I love to see him get some TV, film and other media opportunities, too. Time will tell.
@Anon 6:07 AM
The notation from @Anon 10:31 PM actually meant SINCE 2009, not up TO 2009. As in the totals made by those Idols SINCE 2009, and as @Anon 1:12 AM said the number in parenthesis mean the total # of years that those Idols have been on the list of Top Earning Idols in that time period (from 2009 to present). For instance, Kris Allen, whose Idol year was 2009, was on the list of Top Earning American Idols for only one year and made that amount listed for that year only. He's not been on the list since. (Not picking on Kris at all, he's a good guy and talented, he just hasn't made the list since then). Adam has been on the list 4 separate years since 2009 and has made approx. $15 million total for those 4 years (according to mjs list)......
Some years are better than others for each. Adam was on the previous year's (2013) Forbes list at approx. $5 million and was higher on the list. He had new music out (Trespassing) and did a certain amount of touring. Next year (the rankings and earning for 2015, which includes the second half of 2014 and first half of 2015) will undoubtedly be MUCH higher. Touring is the big thing.....At least for those who tour. A good tour year will net some big numbers, as well as major endorsements....
Just very very happy for Adam....
Meant to say in my post at 6:30 AM:
Major endorsements can net big money as well... along with touring, etc... I wasn't very clear in my statement...
6 20
Well I dont think its pessimistic to compare adam with taylor who made 3.5 million dollars last year. There is such a thing as being completely unrealistic you know.
It's increasingly tough to make money in the music business. And adam is a theater singer, not a pop star IMO. He hasn't had a radio hit in 6 years. He got very lucky hooking up with queen whose songs play to his theatricality. I'd say his next steps are either vegas or Broadway.
Well everyone talks about not getting into Adam's private life, I think this is getting into his private life, in a very big way. I know Forbes published it, but we have no business in knowing or speculating how much money Adam makes. It would be enough to say who on AI were the top earners of any specified year, but it's not our business about the amount of money he earns.
Certainly nothing wrong with Vegas or Broadway.
There seem to be a lot of people here today who are not AL fans, but just want to bring down those who are. As for aVegas a Residency let's not forget Elvis or Britney. As to this article, I think these numbers are off. I doubt ADAM could have paid for a 3 million dollar home before he went on tour with Queen if his income was not bigger than reported. But his personal finances are really not our business, but it's interesting to see regardless.23882
Adam is a celebrity and the numbers are out there. Right or wrong, that's the way it is. It's public..
Glad he's doing well. That's the bottom line for me personally..
Adam appreciates the fact that he was in some musicals, but he did say after a while they were boring. Nothing wrong with Vegas, but Adam has not got enough albums or hit songs to carry that out. You can't just keep singing the same songs from 2 albums or even 3 if he ever gets it out. I think that if it wasn't for the chemistry with the Queen group, he could get bored with that too. I don't think he would like singing Queen songs for a very long time. He is enjoying it now, but I think there will come a time when he will say "it has run it's course"
I think he is finally ready for some new songs of his own, and I hope it will happen in the spring of 2015. Or as he has put it before, "there is something seriously wrong"
I don't know that this really adds anything to the discussion, but I believe Taylor Hicks is also a restaurateur(some people use the term restauranteur), and a quite successful one I think. I've seen him once or twice promoting it (once on a cooking show if my memory serves me correctly), and Hicks seemed very sensible about music stardom and it's challenges, and similarly seemed very sensible about his making a living at something enjoyable being nothing to turn his nose up at.
12;58, I read the same thing. Taylor is a successful restaurant owner. Makes lots of money at it, from what I've read. Nice that he can sing as well. Two things that he enjoys and can make money at. That's a good life.
The reason Idol started was to find undiscovered talent. It was expected that the contestants would not be ready for their big career without professional help. That gets boring after a while. Adam was so much more versatile, trained and talented that he changed the expectations of these singing talent shows. The reason that these shows have not produced that many hit artists is because it is not easy to become successful in the music business. Now, you need to show up to the audition having a personality and performance quality besides a nice voice. The expectations of the public and their collective attention span is much shorter than it used to be. Only so many people will tune in to see successful artists as judges. The Voice, even though it is a "blind audition" can limit the number of people get to audition for the judges who are less attractive and/or who have less performance quality. They are pre-qualified as being well-rounded by the audition process.
What these shows seem to be producing now is artists who will go on to be able to make a modest income in the music industry due to their notoriety gained from appearing on these shows. If a winner or runner up is going to make it big, it has to come soon after the show ends. Then, it's out of sight, out of mind. Each show is limited by who shows up to audition. If singers believe that they will benefit from the one-to-one coaching that the Voice offers, that is where they will audition. I think the Voice had many more singers with good singing voices show up to audition. Its final groups that get to the live shows have more talented singers and performers than Idol has had in recent seasons. If Idol doesn't attract the most talented singers, the number of Idol alumni who appear on the Forbes list will go down.
I have never watched The Voice. I know how popular it is. What major star has come off The Voice? I am not asking this in any snarky manner. I would just like to know.
Adam is more than just a singer/actor. Let's not limit him to that only. He is very artistic & creative and may have a tandem career in design or have a product line. He has many friends in those industries. Who knows what his full potential can be. I'll sit back and let things unfold. He is a joy to follow and so far, I've been very entertained! Yay! It's great to be his fan!!!
Adam always takes us for a ride, and I am glad to be part of it.
He is so talented in many ways.
Never boring.
Well I, for one, appreciate the explanation from glitzy and am just damned happy that Adam is doing so well. Who knows what the future will bring Adam? I don't see him in a lounge act in Vegas at all. As has been said, he has so many other avenues to pursue - fashion, acting, etc. I'll simply continue to follow this amazing, talented man wherever he goes. Enuf said.
LL
Sir Elton John performs in Las Vegas as well as doing arena tours. Celine, Cher & Tom Jones perform there too & they've done arena tours as well. When megastars are performing in Las Vegas, there's certainly nothing shabby about that.
I don't think these numbers are that accurate, although I think the rankings are about right. I've seen comments from several idols before that the actual figures aren't correct. I think a lot of it is guesswork.
But still good to see Adam on the list..I reckon he'll be top 3 next year with the QAL tour on there.
10:34 AM
NO, NO AND NO; on all your pessimistic points as usual! With fans like some of these; who needs haters! All I can say is gosh darn! Adam said his Album would be out soon; so you are saying nothing new. Also, if it is not out soon; I would listen to his new reason; things change you know.
I am sure he meant what he said when he said it; but, circumstances do change. Something SERIOUSLY RIGHT may happen to prevent the soon release.
I love the way some people take Adam's past words to try to use them against him! Sorry, won't fly.
Because you say it does not make it true. Get a grip!!!!!
Adam is doing very well; and he has said that he is secure financially! HIS dreams for the most part have all seem to come true. Beautiful home, nice car; wonderful family and true long time friends; and many patient devoted fans.
He really enjoys what he is doing, and that is the most important thing.
Whatever he decides to do next, and how ever long it take; I will be there.
Most of these young people just probably want to make a good living; anything else, is icing on the cake!
Adam Lambert is doing just fine; thank you.
Those not satisfied with his progress; jump off the crazy train NOW!
Love to see him on Broadway one day; if he can find the time. I believe he has been asked! But, he has said that he just does not have the time right now; when he was asked once in a interview.
I don't get this 'obsession' with some about ADAM's new album. I seriously doubt that all this conjecture on our part is going to hasten the release of ADAM's latest Masterpiece ... so why not just sit back & IMpatiently (or patiently) wait for it to happen. In the meantime ... we have all these pics/vids of his QAL tour ... and it is quite apparent that ADAM is having a 'blast'! Shouldn't that be enough for now for his true & loyal fans? Don't rush Perfection ... it'll be well worth the wait ... I'm SURE!!

@LAMBERT Outlaw/Tess
Well said and totes agree!
Adam doesn't have to prove anything...all is evident after watching a performance. His vocal range exceeds anyone out there and he deserves every penny he's made....you can't put a price on making people happy and he's done that for a lot of us!
