"There's never going to be another, and I'm not replacing him."
Just a few days after Queen and Adam Lambert wowed us on New Years Eve, they covered Classic Rock Magazine and the collaborators have opened up about working with each other.
Adam Lambert spoke to Class Rock Magazine on filling Freddie Mercury's shoes, saying: "There's never going to another, and I'm not replacing him. That's not what I'm doing.
"I'm trying to keep the memory alive, and remind people how amazing he was, without imitating him. I'm trying to share with the audience how much he inspired me."
This comes just a week before their European tour which kicks off in Newcastle. Also in the Classic Rock Magazine interview, legendary guitarist Brian May added: "We've been on tour in the States with Adam, and Freddie's already there because of the writing, and the original performances that we model the show on.
"But he's there also in a much more tangible way, because we use video footage. It's nice to feel he's a part of it, without being swamped by nostalgia. I think we tread that line quite tastefully and carefully."
Roger Taylor was also asked how it is working with Lambert, and said: "He's incredibly musical, a we certainly take anything he says quite seriously. His voice is one in a billion."

Ah-hah talking about shoes again lol! Don't talk about replacement of Freddie...talk about the actual scenario; which is if it weren't for Adam who opened up a Pandora box and out jumped Pandora Freddie...nothing of this big as QAL would have seen the light of day. I think it could have started from step 1 when Adam auditioned with Mama/BH and later due to Adam's love for Queen, they might have thought why not call in Brian and Roger for the S8 finale...and the domino effect rolled on and on from there, till now.
I do think the threat to Queen fans who refuse to let go of Freddie may be quite real though; not easy to take away something from people who have cherished it so close to their psyche and would rather have it intact as original. But people's minds are malleable and many already look up to Adam not as a replacement rather the torch front runner carrying the bright Freddie torch crossing the finish-line to cheers of We Are The Champions!
The Freddie fans who have not given Adam the right to sing the Queen songs, have had a big surprise, IF they actually went to a concert. They still think Freddie irreplaceable , but upon listening and watching Adam, they found they really enjoyed him as a person. They have succumbed to his personality and charm and over the top voice and charisma. They are still Freddie fans, but now have acknowledged that they really like Adam, and accept his take on the Queen songs. No one was more surprised than a Freddie fan, than when they left the concert, they found they had thoroughly enjoyed the show.
Adam had to have it all to get the approval of die hard Freddie fans. The collaboration that is QAL has brought new life, energy and vigor to the songs Freddie performed. I always liked Queen's songs, but now I am obsessed with them. I hear the melodies to a greater extent than I ever did. The energy was not in how the songs were sung by Freddie, it was in the antics on the stage. Adam is staying true to the melodies and he is only improvising a lot on runs at the end of the songs. When I go back and listen and watch the songs when Freddie sang them, I don't get the same feeling as I get when Adam sings them; Adam's versions soar while Freddie's just fly. I think Freddie fans are hearing these songs in a manner that they have never heard them before and they are liking what they are hearing. Adam has sex appeal that I never saw in Freddie. Brian and Roger can't help but to feel this new energy and it steps up their stage performances. I saw a lot of videos where Brian is looking down at his guitar and not making much eye contact with the audience. Now, he is incorporated into Adam's performances, and it shows in how much Brian is enjoying doing these shows.
Anne Marie.....The point you made in your last sentence "they found they had thoroughly enjoyed the show" is the crux of the whole issue as rightly emphasised by you and should not be about the replacement of Freddie. Let's face it, at the bottom of it all, people want to have a good time and leave with the thought, it was worth all the trouble and money spent. Adam always delivers by leaps and bounds.
