This is the first time I see a giant panda go into labour and lo and behold she gave birth to a 200g baby panda ! Very touching ! Literal and figurative, Jia Jia delivered ! First-ever panda born at the Singapore River Safari, to its mom and dad Jia Jia and Kai Kai who arrived from China and called Singapore home in 2015; they tried and tried but could not succeed and this is the grand finale with some help from WRS (Wildlife Reserves Singapore) using artificial insemination with frozen semen from the male giant panda Kai Kai. Congratulations ! to the proud giant parents, and WRS !

So tiny yet its name is giant panda
Parents Jia Jia and Kai Kai arrived in Singapore in 2012
A small crowd gathered to welcome the giant pandas
Which flew all the way from China in an SIA cargo plane
They made Singapore their permanent home
Alas, they could not conceive
Difficult, as female pandas come into heat only once a year
They roam free in the vast Singapore panda forest reserve
Finally, wildlife vet Dr Cheng decided they had to literally lend a hand
Artificial insemination after consultation with their China counterpart vets
And so the ball started rolling with meticulous care and love
After the insemination there was no way to know if Jia Jia was pregnant
Until an ultrasound scan almost near term picked up heartbeats from the foetus !
Yes ! the very start of a new life of a giant panda in Singapore
Baby eventually squeezes out of its mother’s uterus…
Squeak ! squeak ! squeak ! scared and disoriented
