Fantastic what Adam does with the microphone.
The incredibly good concert in SSE Arena, Wembley
Thousands of thanks to those who posted videos from this incredible tour. It was my spiritual food during this period.
ReplyDeleteThey came, they went, they conquered. Good job boys.
ReplyDeleteRight!......."Veni, Vidi, Vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered) should be Adam's motto!
ReplyDeleteI came, I sang, I conquered.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea fluttsp!...."Veni, Cantavi, Vici" (I came, I SANG, I conquered)....good word play on a common phrase....PERFECT for Adam!
ReplyDeleteHope my Latin is correct, it's been a VERY long time....any Latin scholars around?...for "I sang"?
Adam should use that as a motto in a tattoo. That says it ALL!
Nanbert, English/Latin ....
ReplyDeleteI came, I sang, I conquered .... Ego canebam vici.
Fluttsp...Finally checked it out further. Caneban is Past Imperfect..."I was singing". Cantavi is Simple Past..."I sang". See the print out at the very bottom of the page linked below for the explanation:

Oh my!...this reminds me of how much I hated all those crazy Latin tenses!
So...I'm PRETTY sure now...."Veni, Cantavi, Vici" (I came, I sang, I conquered") is correct.
"Ego" is not actually needed....just like in the well known quotation, "Veni, Vidi, Vici"(I came, I saw, I conquered"). It just means "I"...and that is already included in the 1st person, simple past tense translation for cantavi.
It certainly would be a perfect motto for Adam!
Nanbert, I too googled it & on a couple of English/Latin translation sites, I was given the same translation .....
ReplyDeleteEgo canebam vici.
I doubt both these sites would give the incorrect translation.
The translation of just "I sang" is ....
Oscula cantanti.
What can I say? I included the information/print out above from the Classics Department at the Ohio State University on Latin tense for sing....did you read it? All the way at the bottom of the page? Also, there are more than one word for sing.
ReplyDeleteAnd the actual truth is that you will very often get conflicting translations on different sites. Happens all the time to me when checking out things in French...and Latin is far more complicated a language. Try several sites and see what I mean. Usually you'll get something different each time.
Also note that "cantavi" is the same tense as "veni" and "vici"....for that phrase.
And last...enter your "Ego caneban vici" into a few sites for translation INTO English and see if it translates into "I came, I sang, I conquered". Didn't for me. Now try "Veni, cantavi, vici" in a few different sites.
When I have a moment, I'LL keep checking this out. I have a couple of H.S. Latin primers of my son's packed away somewhere in one of the boxes I never unpacked when I moved from my house to a condo....not enough room for them, and dozens of other books still unpacked.
Not going to waste any more time on this. In the grand scheme of things, it's not important.
ReplyDeleteOf course, you're quite right. I just thought it was an interesting exercise....finding a Latin motto/tattoo for Adam that was a play on the well known Latin quotation ("Veni, Vidi, Vici") ...especially since he already has a Latin tattoo. It was for me, and since you chimed in I thought it was for you, too.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that. I thought your idea of "I came, I sang, I conquered" was a clever twist to that phrase ("I came, I saw, I conquered") by just changing the middle word "I saw" to "I sang".
And, of course, I tend to get too long-winded and academic when I get enthused about something.....as I'm sure you've noticed! LOL
Have a nice holiday, fluttsp.
