Adam Lambert Live At The Roxy: "The Original High (Demo Version)" and "A Loaded Smile"

At Friday's (1/29/21) spectacular livestream concert, Live At The Roxy, Adam Lambert performed what many fans have described as one of his best setlists ever.  There were plenty of songs from every album and one, in particular, was quite special:  "The Original High."  When many of us heard the beginning notes, we knew what the song was, but there was the feeling of "wait, this sounds a bit different!"

So, what some of us may have forgotten is that Adam recorded an original demo version of the tune...

From an interview in Idolator in June 2015:
Did the song “The Original High” have that ’90s throwback house vibe in the demo form?

AL: No! The melody was all there. I think it was mostly the verses that stayed, but it was actually more chill — like acoustic-y chill in the beginning, as a songwriting demo. We slowly discovered that throwback house thing was gonna be a big part of the album.

Its evolution happened with Shellback, and we made it more uplifting as far as the emotional tone of it. I think in the original it was a little sadder, a little more melancholy, and we pushed it up into a more euphoric place.

However, in July 2016...

The website Celebmix reviewed the demo version, as follows:
‘The Original High’ demo is stripped back and a lot more chilled out than the version which was released in 2015. It’s got that laid-back vibe to it, perfect for lazy summer days.

Well, Adam decided to perform the demo version instead of the more familiar album version we all know and love — and thanks to Adam fan @PattiHum on Twitter, who was one of the lucky ones to enjoy a Zoom Meet & Greet with Adam, we find out why...

So, for the first time ever onstage, Adam performed the demo version, and YouTube user Adam Lambert Daily (thank you!) has been kind enough to upload it for us to enjoy.

But that wasn't the only surprise.  Adam treated us with no less than SIX tracks from his first album, For Your Entertainment — a true gift to us fans.

And, in particular, there was one song he hasn't performed since the Glam Nation Tour, more than ten years ago, but that's always been a huge fan favorite: Linda Perry's "A Loaded Smile."  So, again, with our thanks to Adam Lambert Daily for the upload — an absolutely exquisite performance!

Hope y'all enjoyed this post! I was just going to put up the two videos with little explanation — but then I realized there was so much interesting information available to provide context, and so the post turned into a project! FYI, there have been some other videos of the show, full-length or just individual songs, that have been pulled off of YouTube over the weekend, either by Adam or Shosh or the management team or NoCap or whomever; so, just as advanced warning, could happen with the two videos above (fingers crossed not!).

broddy, that whole post was great! So much stuff there

I love that original version of TOH so much. The lyrics are more interesting than the recording, although I love that version, too.. I agree that this version is perfect at this time. It sounds like these shows were a huge success! I also enjoyed the M&G snippets. What a thrill to talk to him! I've never ever done and regular M&G. Too nervous!

Thanks, Dee! I love both versions, too — and I wish the song could have found its way to a single, I think it might have done surprisingly well on the radio. Alas.

Oh I hope that someone like Gelly or y0116jp or Adam Lambert Daily might compile all of the M&Gs and put them onto one video — I'd hate to post separate tweets or IGs and some folks unable to watch them.

According to my handy little pocket AFL calendar, there is a Stonewall Pre-event on Thursday, Feb. 18. I assume Adam will be a part of it. There's another pre-even on April 22. He is supposed to be the "curator" of the actual event on June 6. Not sure what "curator" entails, but it sounds like he's got a major part in the whole thing.

MiReLa....that was a great review of Adam's "Live at the Roxy" performance/s. They both were SUPERLATIVE concerts...but it's a shame he (and we) couldn't see all his worldwide audience enjoying it as much as I know they did....and we did.

If anyone ever finds any statistics on those two shows of Adam's, please let us know....i.e. the number of different countries involved (and the number from each country). How many concerts were purchased in total.....and even how many people purchased tickets for both concerts (if it's possible to know that).

I am SO hopeful that it was an overwhelming success....so Adam will be encouraged to do more!

Nanbert, Shosh has been asked the same questions you’re asking about Adam’s concerts and all she said was “we are thrilled!” I wish she had more to say. Sigh

Nanbert said...

Sunflower....thanks for the answer...or rather, the NO answer! It's always hard to tell if no news is good news or bad news!

Well, we can hope that info will be leaked eventually, but I won't hold my breath. But, after all, statistics for "physical" performances/tours are usually eventually released to the public....so why not virtual performance/tours? We'll see. I just hope it was very lucretive for Adam. Don't know how many ways profits will be divided.... Adam and the website it was streaming on...plus rental for the Roxy...plus costs of camera work...etc?

I think Shosh is wise not to reveal the viewership of Adam's shows. I assume it was a decision made by Adam's team. The shows were a rousing success for Adam and his fans. That's enough for me.

Off the subject but Bohemian Rhapsody the movie will air twice back to back on the FX cable channel starting at 6:00 pm. Central time through 9:00 pm. I assume this channel is only for USA.

A couple who are very good friends called me and said they had just watched BH and loved it. I told them about TSMGO, too, and said it was a must=watch, too. The two films go hand in hand.

Sunflower....funny, I just noticed that BR will be playing today on USA... and had planned to watch it again, too.

Dee R Gee...I agree that the movies "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "The Show Must Go On: The Queen and Adam Lambert Story"(which I regularly visit on Netflix) should go hand in hand. And perhaps they should be made into a trilogy with "Queen and Adam Lambert....Live Around the World". Great viewing/listening!!!!

Dee R Gee said...

Nanbert, I agree! Those three make a perfect trilogy! Together, they create the perfect legendary rock music history story. Adam is the crown jewel, of course.

Watched SNL last night to catch Dan Levy as host. For those who don't know, Dan was in the Schitt's Creek series which I enjoyed a lot. I thought he did a good job as host. They showed a clip of a few people who did messages fori the "It Gets Better" campaign years ago and they included a tiny second of Adam. Very brief, but there he was. SNL has lots of hits and misses, but I thought Dan did a nice job overall.

Would love to Adam to get a chance to host SNL sometime. I think he would do a very good job. He has a natural sense of comic timing and he's pretty fearless.

Nanbert, weird how my local paper tv guide listing had Bo Rhap movie on the FX channel and yours was for the USA channel. Same day but different channels. Hmmmm Dee R Gee I heard about that seconds clip of Adams. I wish so badly Adam would be at least musical guest. What is SNL waiting for? Anyways Superbowl game is boring me along with the commercials, umm that Dorito one Matthew McConne???, forgot his last names spelling they play a few lines of I Want to Break Free. Lets see how The Weekend halftime show goes. I still dream of QAL for halftime.

Nanbert said...

Sunflower...Oops, I was wrong... it was on the FX Channel. Sorry if I misdirected anyone. Hope I didn't make anyone miss it.

Dee R Gee said...

Sunflower, you're so right. SNL is long overdue to have Adam on, at least as a musical guest. But he would make a great host, too.

I have no allegiance to either team in the Super Bowl. Kind of rooting for KC since Brady has won so many times. But KC is getting spanked, so there you go.

Just saw The Weeknd perform at half-time. Yep.

Sunflower said...

Nanbert, hahaha I found it odd that it was aired on the same day but on a different network. Well I did'nt miss it, I watched it back to back. Haha Dee R. Gee Adam would indeed make a great host! I have a brother and his family who live in Tampa and rooted for Tampa, not me or KC Chiefs either. One thing I like Adams version of Blinding Lights then Weekends original. Lol
