I have heard this story many times before, as we all have. I'm not sure why this particular time it makes me cry. I think it must be way in which it is so respectfully presented; the visuals, the voice of Adam, the tone of the narrator. Although some may say, why go over it again and again, I think that the story of Adam becoming aware of who he is, and his subsequent coming out, is an integral part of how Adam came to be the incredible human being that he is today. And, I believe, that it is so important for others, children and adults alike, to hear how difficult it can be for children who are different. That message can't be heard too often.

So, as much as we may say, "heard this before", there will be so many who haven't and who, as a result of hearing this part of Adam's story, will become more accepting, inspired, or comforted.

On the flip side, I so look forward to seeing how they cover the "music" portion of the show.

My first reaction to watching this short clip: tears welling up in my eyes. Adam's need to hide his true self during his teen years is truly heart-wrenching. His honesty, and his willingness to share his story, on the other hand, brings tears of pride. And the pictures of Adam as a young child just make me smile. And all this emotion within this very short clip! Thinking I'd better have a box of tissues handy this Sunday..as I think we'll be needing them.

It also reminds us why his new song, "Outlaws of Love" is such a personal outpouring of his inner feelings, and also why he responded with so much passion after the US magazine article came out. I just love him because he is "real" and dares to bare his soul, and speak the words that need to be spoken, with no shame or hesitation. May his willingness to talk about his journey be an inspiration for those many others out there who are feeling different and perhaps alone, to feel that they are not, and "It Gets Better".

For those who do not "know" Adam Lambert as we, his fans, feel we do, may they come to a better understanding of who this special human being is, and why we all adore him so much, both for his Voice and Music, and because he is truly a good and beautiful man, who has struggled to be accepted for the brilliant artist that he is, with no labels preceding his name. And although he is proud of who he is, as he recently said in an interview: he doesn't wish to wear a shirt that says "Gay Adam" but just "Adam". Tears....

His honesty and sharing of his most private thoughts are told with such simplicity and clarity that I hope and pray all who watch this very special (for those viewers who don't know much about Adam already) TV special, Behind The Music, can finally begin to understand who Adam is and how he, despite all the emotional struggles he sustained, overcame them to become a brilliant and creative artist,a kind, generous, understanding and loving soul to others. His message is a key to helping troubled youth overcome their feelings of isolation too. I love Adam Lambert.

That laugh at 0:33 when he was young is so familiar, isn't it?
His life story is heart-wrenching. He is such a beautiful and compassionate human being.

I saw the first doc and loved it, and though this one touches on some of the same topics, I'm sure it delves more into the music and his future. As for the gay issue, it's great that Adam had understanidng parents and found an accepting circle of friends in theater. BUT, he still has to handle daily hate attacks and ridicule, because he has chosen to live openly and honestly. It's a testament to his character that he handles this so well and with such maturity. Hopefully, his positive attitude will help others face similar obstacles. Adam is simply the best. I hope many non-fans see this program and see the Adam we love.

Anyone who says Adam hasn't "paid his dues" in so many ways, is just plain wrong.

The Dark Side said...

What is doubly meaningful in this clip is the love he is given by his family...this does not happen that often. Add the self doubt to an unaccepting family, where do young people turn? To give Adam his start in music at so young an age and nurture that talent speaks volumns for his parents. Think Eber and Liela are to be highly commended for their insight. Cannot wait for Sunday evening.

Anonymous said...

I'm crying. Yes, 11:34 he's paid his dues big time. How many out there are still in denial. So sad, so very very sad. Thank you Eber and Liela.

Adam was always gorgeous, always sexy, will always be... It comes from the outside and the scars.

Anonymous said...

Yes, @Anon 11:42AM ..."and the scars."

"scars make us who we are
hearts and homes are broken, broken.
far, we could go so far
with our minds wide open, open"

Yes, @Dark Side, fortunately for Adam he grew beautiful due to the support, love and acceptance of his family.

Sadly, those scars can turn into unhealed tragedy for so many. Those kids who don't have loving families often leave their homes, end up living on the streets, taking drugs, while all the time they are just looking for love and acceptance. That is the true tragedy. They just want to be loved and told that they are OK, just the way they are.

I think what Adam said about not "hearing" that being gay or bi was OK when he was in school, and how that had a huge impact on how he felt about himself as a person was a very powerful statement. He has so much to teach the world through his music and his life experience.

Have I said that I adore Adam? :)

I've loved adam from day 1 (saw something so special) what's heartbreaking to me is of course adam's struggles, but everyone I know including my husband just won't give him a chance. Not that they hate him, they just don't see in any shape or form what I see, so thank-god for this site because I would be lost without it. I cannot talk about adam anymore with anyone, i just say to myself, time will tell and eventually you will All get what I've been tryin to say- someday! I don't want to leave a tag on this one because then I will feel awkward to comment again- but no one in my life gets how I feel and when the next tour comes around, I'll have to go by myself!

Anonymous said...

I think Adam is more attracted to women than he lets on. I just see him with a woman somewhere down the road. I can't explain it, but the bi word always comes up when he talks. I don't know but he has a damn good voice.

Anonymous said...

Adam should come out of the closet and admit he finds women sexy. come on Adam!

Anonymous said...

@Anon 12:43 PM (momentarily tag-free)

I hear clearly what you are saying. So many, for whatever their reason, don't see the light in his music or his soul. I think they will someday, I hope. :) I too, don't have a lot of people to talk to about Adam. Their eyes get a glassed over look when I mention his name. "Here she goes again!" But I will tell you that one of my friends who said - "I don't like that type of music" just said to me the other day (after I sent her WWFM acoustic live) that she would like to hear some of Adam's other acoustic songs. So, there is hope! :)

I am so glad this site is here too! And I am glad that YOU are here, ... whoever you are! ;)

I went to 4 of the 5 Adam concerts that I attended alone, so I hear what you are saying. But, know that the love and celebration at the concerts is such that I never really felt alone. And besides, I bet there are a lot of us here who would love to meet you before, during or after a concert!

Keep the faith!

Dear God, he's had that killer "look" since he was little. He sure knows how to work his eyes and his face like a pro.

As much as I too feel sad for his struggle, I don't think he would be the same Adam that we know and love, had he not gone through that.
I do wish that attitudes would change so that people of all ages could live as they chose, and not have to face such horrible treatment.
Ahhh, maybe one day!

I stumbled across this message board site from some people who know Adam. Someone asks "Does anyone know why Adam left "Wicked""? The conversation is from 2005.

Here's my opinion for what it's worth.

Depending on the medium, the hidden message to listeners, watchers or readers is that he is THE ground breaker. To announce to the world that he is "openly gay" in RollingStone cost him many fans, but that was the chance he was willing to take to "keep it real." To be the first to divulge something so controversial at the very beginning of his career is in and of itself the epitome of his character.

Right now his being gay and proud is going to be a question that comes up and that he deals with honestly. The media wants to keep that fact in the forefront because he is the FIRST and is therefore making it easier for those who come after him.

We also have to remember that the name of this series is "Behind the Music." When someone does a documentary on him called "The Music of Adam Lambert," I would expect that they would focus on his music and not his sexuality.

There will come a time when who he sleeps with becomes a non-issue. I look forward to that as I am sure Adam does. However, if he had a so-so voice, average looks and an okay personality, no one would care at all because he wouldn't be in the limelight.

In the future Adam's glorious voice will win back those music fans and gain many more as his exposure widens.

I commend him for his character because it is defined not by what you do when you are in a crowd but by what you do when no one is watching.

Gurl, I want your ears. I think I heard 3 or 4 words out of 60. I'm off to get a hearing test.

(1) Adam left Wicked to audition for American Idol. (2) Adam has said many times that he DOES find women beautiful and sexy - he just doesn't want to sleep with them. The man knows what he wants.

Temporarily Anon 12.43. Your story could be my story, but as you say this site is our outlet, It is just so sad that others cannot see the sweet and beautiful soul of Adam. I have had to haul back my "going on" about Adam to.
Sadly I dont think we will get BTM here in NZ, but it could turn up on MTV at some time. as they do play someof these or even E.
Glitzylady and Sister your words are so profound and perfect as usual.

@Shiggles 2:45 PM
Absolutely true, every word!

Yes, "Behind the Music", in order to tell the whole story of Adam Lambert, must include his "history": "his story". To leave any of it out would both deny the man he is proud and worked very hard to be, and would not even begin to enlighten those who are unfamiliar with "the rest of the story" of how this multi-dimensional Adam Lambert singer/performer/evolved human being came to this moment in time. Perhaps those who dismissed him as that "nasty" boy after one performance in Nov. 2009 will tune in and see there is far more to him than they imagined. And those who are unfamiliar with him in any way, will get a great introduction, and not just little bits of gossip from TMZ. How could anyone not respect and love this guy when seen from the beginning to the end of what I am guessing will be a respectful and informative program. It will also put a "face" on the struggle for understanding and acceptance. And, after all is said and done, who could resist that smiling, shining face and that great laugh!! And the Voice......

@ Glitzylady ...Have I told you lately that I think I love you??? =)
Your post is So heartfelt and beautifully stated. I totally agree and almost felt like I was writing it myself as I was reading, your words touched me so profoundly. Thank you for sharing and stating it so well.

I haven't been here that much to read lately, and written even less.
@ The Dark Side, an old favorite, glad to say still enjoying your posts, and totally agree. Adam's PARENTS are to be thanked and commended for their loving parenting, their acceptance and support. Even WITH that Adam felt different and alone. Imagine how difficult it would have been without it? How so many others must have suffered. The words of Adams 'Outlawsoflove' REALLY have struck a chord in my heart.

@ Sister, CT, DRG..so many of above: to all those who have room in your hearts, could feel, share and express so well... thank you =)

I have such a lump in my throat... and such excitement and anticipation for Adam's 'Behind the Music'... Can't wait!!

Good to see you here! Thanks..my post at 10:12 AM was written with tears in my eyes, because it so touched my heart for so many reasons. To see vids of Adam hiding his true self all those years: It must have so hard, to keep that up for so long, to try to fit into the accepted "norm" of his school community. Just imagine that there were undoubtedly others in his school who were in the same situation, all unrevealed to each other, and all living with their secrets. It seems that things are indeed getting better, in some communities, even now, but it would be so wonderful if sometime in the future all can know the freedom to be fully proud of who they are, with no deeply hidden secrets. Adam is such an inspiration and his story needs to be told, and told again... I just hope the people who need to hear it the most will listen, both those who are in the position of being "different" , and also those who have closed hearts.

Glitzylady, I so agree with everything you said. Just to add to your hope for "the people who need to hear it the most will listen"; I hope it tugs at them and truly opens their hearts. Enough of trying to "change" them. I hope that in my lifetime there will be profound change and acceptance. I will never forget a human sexuality class I took in college. There was a young man in the class who asked the teacher if he could just talk to the class one day. Mind you, this was a class with many jocks in it. He was truly an inspiration and I will never forget his little speech. He said that he was gay and explained that he had felt different since around age 5. He said he knew he was different and wanted everyone to understand that he could not change who he was. He went on for about 10 minutes I think talking about his plight. I will never forget him. That was around 35 years ago. He opened my eyes and my heart further that day.

your words could be mine too. Thanks goodness for this site. Its the first place I come to in the mornings...
I'm not sure if we'll gte the programme here, we do get channel V, is that the same as VH1? but I'm not sure if the programming or timings are the same as the States.
Watching this clip definitely brings a lump to the throat, but on a shallow note, god, doesn't he look gorgeous. Everytime I look at him, I just don't understand that so many people don't see what I see.
only one teeny tiny complaint, that they put a picture of him and Danielle in a place where he was saying he had to pretend to fit in, as though his relationship with her wasn't real.

and @anon 12.51 Adam has said many times he finds women sexy.

Anonymous said...

It is hard for young people when they realize they don't fit in, I watched a family member go through this. When there is no one around you to talk to, it can be depressing. Some people pretend all their lives, because of jobs or being looked down on, as some sort of sicko.

I have always questioned people, still do, when they say hateful words. I always start with "how you like it if that were you?" Then I have to tell them, they won't have the same rights as other people. I have noticed that more people are saying "I don't care what other people do with their lives". But my this time I think I have made them think that people are just people and we are all different, yet the same. It is a topic I have felt strongly about since I was young, "treat people as you want to be treated".

I admire Adam, with all my being, for being honest. I believe he is a saviour for many young souls. Teaching love, not hate. This program is good for anyone who finds themself being different.

Those who believe homosexuality is a sinful choice to be hidden in shame do not understand that being gay has nothing to do with choice, and "gay pride" is a triumphant declaration of the identity they were born with. Nor is it a denial of their heterosexuality, as if this was something being latent or repressed, and therefore, could have their homosexuality prayed away.

Adam's VH1 feature will confront these perceptions head on, if the previews are any indication. With the clarity of a great teacher, Adam tells his story and compels in its poignancy and honesty. When he describes how he had to assume another persona to be accepted, to be someone he was not and settle for the lie, Adam pricks our conscience to the core and puts to shame our prejudices and ignorance to teach us a better way.

Some have complained that Adam should not be so "out", that he needs to tamp it down to be more palatable to a wider public. Adam's retort is that the heterosexual lifestyle is foisted on him all the time, and no one is asking anyone to tone down their heterosexuality. Touche.

Adam did not choose to at first, but as a high profile personality who is vastly admired for all his wonderful qualities, Adam is the perfect vehicle for exposing homophobia for the ignorance that it is. A magical magnet attracting admirers of all kinds, male and female, young and old, across many cultures and beliefs, Adam is an entrancing combination of talent, generosity, intelligence, courage and compassion who has the power to melt and change hearts of stone. And in many ways, he does that by being just the way he is. atm

@atm 10:39

I wish I had an applause symbol on my keyboard because you would be able to see the loudest clapping on earth.

I don't get it at all. Science tells us that in every animal species on earth there are homosexuals; from the whale to the hummingbird.

I live next to a lake. This spring there were two mallard drakes who were delighted with each other's company much to the dismay of my elderly and very opinionated neighbor. His wife, however, was not bothered by it at all. Is it that straight men are frightened by "gay" guys? Are their male egos so fragile that they think they could be "turned?" Is that why most men won't be caught dead wearing a pink shirt?I'll have to ponder on this one for a while.

Wow, what a great, thought-provoking thread! Love it!

Too tired to say something brilliant - so will just say: no wonder Adam was so comfortable up on stage...he was an "actor" every single day of his Jr. High and High School life! It had become 2nd nature to him - sadly.

The fact that Adam came through those difficult years with his compassion for others still intact (he could've turned SO bitter!) and such a relaxed sense of humor says so much about the strength he holds within himself. Bravo, Adam - I absolultely adore you, for so many reasons!!

And to the anon who said they can't talk to others about Adam, and this site is an oasis...I too have been saying that since I found this site, about 2 years ago! I have a friend or two who like Adam, but don't know anyone (besides all of you - my online friends) who is as obsessed as I am...and I need the outlet of talking to others who find themselves in the same boat. Can't keep all that glitter bottled up inside! Love our threads/conversations, even when they get briefly invaded by nut jobs! ;)

The childhood photos are so endearing. As if we didn't already love him enough, and I do mean love. Not the typical fan adulation. We truly love this charming, thoughtful, kind, charismatic, talented man. And that is made possible because of the way he has opened up to us in a way few other, if any, public figures ever have to their fan base.
