A former patient who sought help from the Christian counseling clinic owned by GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann and her husband, Marcus, told ABC News he was advised that prayer could rid him of his homosexual urges and he could eventually be "re-oriented."

"[One counselor's] path for my therapy would be to read the Bible, pray to God that I would no longer be gay," said Andrew Ramirez, who was 17-years-old at the time he sought help from Bachmann & Associates in suburban Minneapolis in 2004. "And God would forgive me if I were straight."

In the past, Marcus Bachmann has disputed the clinic has treated gay patients this way. But Ramirez's account, which was first reported by The Nation, is similar to the counseling session that appears on new undercover video shot by a gay rights advocacy group last month. That footage shows another counselor at the Bachmann clinic telling a gay man posing as a patient that, with prayer and effort, he could eventually learn to be attracted to women and rid himself of his gay urges.

Watch the full report tonight on ABC News' "Nightline".

The disclosures have provided fresh insight into what Michele Bachmann has called her family business -- the primary source of income for her family as she left her law practice to move into politics. The counseling center has factored into Bachmann's campaign narrative, as well -- evidence, she said, of her ability to understand what it takes to create jobs and run a small business.

"We're very proud of our business and all job creators in the U.S.," Michele Bachmann told a reporter when asked about the clinic Monday.

The Bachmann & Associates counseling centers appear to offer a wide range of services to people in emotional distress and are clearly billed on the clinic's website as a religious-based approach to mental health treatment. ABC News sought to interview Marcus Bachmann and his wife about the clinic and its practices, but a campaign spokeswoman declined to make them available. The campaign did not respond to written questions, instead sending a statement that says they cannot answer questions about specific treatments provided to patients.

"Those matters are protected by patient-client confidentiality," the statement says. "The Bachmann's are in no position ethically, legally, or morally to discuss specific courses of treatment concerning the clinic's patients."

Questions about how the counselors at Bachmann's clinic respond to patients who arrive seeking help with the tension between their sexual urges and their religious beliefs have long swirled in Minnesota. Marcus Bachmann was asked if his clinic tried to convert patients from gay to straight in an interview with a local newspaper in 2006, and said, "That's a false statement."

I was surprised at Neil's answer to Adam on twitter. I guess he doesn't accept gays either. I thought this was a joke, but I don't think so. He wound up saying love the sinner hate the sin. Had a few other comments too. Did I read it all wrong, don't tell me it was a tongue in cheek answer.:(

Michele Hateman uses Christianity to promote her bigoted agenda against gays.. How can we allow such a person to run for the highest position in our country. Oh wait didn't this type of bigot win in Germany, using hatred of Jews as scapegoats.

Anonymous said...

@LP I think Neil was mocking Michelle Bauchmann's remark about not judging Gays and then filling in the rest of the remarks that Bauchmann really meant to say. Neil is A-Okay - just being witty!

I love you Adam Lambert - my hero!

I can't believe what I am hearing coming from her mouth! She is just like a ROBOT repeating "I am running for the presidency of the US" and avoids answering directly to any questions! She is not only phony and ignorant, but so dangerous with her ignorant ideas! It's incredible that someone like her could even be seriously considered to be our future AMERICAN PRESIDENT!!!
Speechless & Sad

You know Michele's people are going to come up with something about her comments....too late..

She might as well step down right now

If this is her view on gays

Let's keep the Bible out of politics

Neil was giving the line the religious right uses to say they are not being judgmental or hateful. 12:47 if you are for real, please find out more info about Rick Perry. If you are truly an Adam fan, you would not vote for him.
So excited that Adam is getting political. It is time to do so. He and my son have inspired me to get extremely involved. Next month I will meet the executive director of Equal Rights Washington. Can't believe it was just a couple years ago that I became a Glambert. We rule ladies! So proud of all Adam is accomplishing!
Can't wait to devour the new CD! Yummy!

As a Christian and gay rights supporter, I am extremely saddened by this. She gives such a bad light on what the true Christian purpose is, and that is to spread the LOVE that is consistently taught throughout the Bible. The fact that political Christians feel the need to make this war against gays their lives work is just disgusting. It is not the big picture and never will be. The biggest picture is that so many things can be accomplished and so much more progress can be made in and through LOVE.

Gregory wouldn't let her wiggle away from answering...she's one step up from Palin in "smarts" she doesn't get as flustered. She's more dangerous than Palin was, Palin was obviously a nitwit, this woman really truly thinks she's reasonable!.. Our country is in such trouble should gender identity and sexual orientation even be considered as a "problem" to be addressed? It's the heighth of stupidity.
I'd sure hate to see the cabinet she'd choose..
in line with her thinking and judges she would replace and approve of that are within her jurisdiction.

I don't want a government run by religion, that is not a democracy that is a theocracy. The founders of our country (that she's so fond of misquoting) did not set up a theocracy, they knew the dangers of such a governing body.

The Constitution makes no mention of the bible or of what constitutes a legal marriage or of the sexes of married couples.

She's a joke, but not a funny one, a scary one and many, too many people think the same way she does.......JAK

Anonymous said...

She won't be president. She won't be able to continue being coy and 2-faced about her stand on gays. The media will go over and over this with her til the day she dies.

Anonymous said...

Bachmann is unelectable. Be more concerned about Rick Perry. Same homophobia / theocratic nonsense..but smoother...also a third party candidate is troublesome. I know people critcize celebrities for getting political, but it is a great asset when Adam, Dan Savage, etc. make comments. We all lose if people don't get out and vote and make sure others do too!Adam can energize young people. We already know he energizes women of a certain age ;)

Agree about the fact that she is much more dangerous than Palin since she is more articulate and informed. Having said that, she and the millions that agree with her make me scared for this country. But also believe that Gov. Rick Perry is just as dangerous. ... Adamluv

I thought we were done with Palin!? She is even worse than Palin. What saddens me is that there are supporters of these type of people. What happen to separation of church and state? On the outside she looks all dolled up but from inside she isn't any different than those theologist leaders who ruined my country for the past 32 years.

Not only does the constitution make no mention of the Bible, but Jesus himself makes NO mention of homosexuality in the Bible. Just research and see.

The ancient laws concerning this were found only in the OLD Testament, many generations before. This was a minor topic, less important than the rules about mixing food types and types of cloth, how slaves were to be treated, along with the rule that women were not to speak in church or be in a role of leadership. Guess Michelle doesn't believe in that part.. she' pretty selective over where to place her hate.

This woman makes my skin crawl.

OT - I've wanted to post this for a long time but no thread seemed appropriate until this one. Here is a very positive short story. My good friend and fellow 24/7 poster @lmb recently sent me the lovely poster that she created for PFLAG (parents/friends of lesbians and gays). On it is written these words in big bold colors - "Closets are for clothes, NOT our kids". There is a beautiful bird in flight holding a hanger with a colorful shirt hanging from it where you can place a photo of your child. It is most impressive but @lmb took it 3 steps further and sent 2 photos of Adam (the one in the cowboy outfit and the other with the striped blue shirt that everyone has seen). Also included in the package was a darlin' photo of her son as a child !!!!!!! Everything was laminated so they will last forever!!!!! This was one of the sweetest gestures I've ever seen. I only wish I still had a classroom in which to proudly display this most meaningful poster. BTW, @lmb gave me permission to tell this story. She also told me she put extra glitter on it since we're "glamsistas"!!!!!! ... Adamluv

there actaully was some serious punditry about MB's husband being a closet homosexual. regardless, they are both extremely dangerous. More dangerous than a Palin because it is quite clear that Palin is "in it" for the money/fame etc., but Bachmann truly believes her views, it's almost admirable, if it wasn't so sickening; but unlike Palin, she's truly interested in advancing her ideas, she's not in it just for the speaking engagements etc. and money... much more dangerous... as is Rick Perry, who is, as someone suggested above, probably more legitimately electable, which is not a good thing. Although, I'd rather see him get the GOP nom than someone more moderate, and I use that term loosely, like a Romney because a far right candidate in the general will be easier for Dems to beat, a good thing IMHO.

Anonymous said...

I had no idea that MB was such a fruit cake. I mean, really, really stupid! She is also such an automaton and those crazy ass eyes! WHOA!!!

@ 5:55 PM and 7:11 PM

You might want to do some reading before you make Ron Paul your candidate......he looks like a sweet old man and he may be, but he is hopelessly naive and would be a danger to our country.

He does not believe in separation of church and state, favors withdrawing from the United Nations, does not believe in evolution, he has stated he would like to abolish the Federal Dept of Education (feels education should be left to decisions of states and churches), against National Health Care, Food and Drug Admin., the Dept of Energy, Dept of Health and Human Services
and the IRS!!!!!! I guess he assumes if we didn't pay taxes we'd be so grateful we'd donate enough money to run this country! He stated he feels these departments are unnecessary.

And to top it all off stated at one time about the crime in Washington D.C. "I think we can safely assume that 95 % of the black males in that city are semi-criminals or entirely criminals." I'm not sure if he was including the ones in Congress or not!

There are some good things he believes in for government, but do you want to take a chance on him being President when you can read for yourself that the above are true? I don't!

First,
Earlier I had posted about Adam who "energizes women of a certain age". I was being humorous...and truthful...I wasn't excluding others. There is a slight lack of humor lately and I was surprised some felt that Neil was being serious with his comment (Love the sinner, hate the sin). Ligten up a little.
Second,
To the poster who shouts...using all caps. You need to look into Ron Paul more. He supported the continutation of Don't Ask Don't Tell. Here is a video link. If this doesn't work, just Google Ron Paul gay rights and you will probably find what you need. I do agree with him on foreign affairs...but that is all! it.http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=ron+paul+gay+rights&mid=3B1A33669E70058C36833B1A33669E70058C3683&view=detail&FORM=VIRE6

Third,
Thank you for the sweet post, Adamluv...my Glambert Sista. One of the best things that has happened from this site is our connecting as soul mates in so many ways.

Just noticed the post above me. Yep, read up on Ron Paul. The thing that we have to be afraid of is the third party that could develop. That is one way we could end up with a President Perry, Bachmann, or Paul. It could split the votes for Obama. I am not completely thrilled with him, but he has done many things right for the LGBTQ community.

I am moving. I think it is high time we get rid of the 2 party system as well as the joke of an electoral college and start from scratch. Problem is, who could we trust to do it the fair and honest way? Who would really be trusted to do what the American people actually NEED? All I can say is Obama started off with an honest agenda. He really wanted to do right by the American people, but the Republicans immediately said the first thing on their agenda was going to be to get Obama out of office-without even giving the man a chance. I am sickened by the party of "no". A large majority of Americans agree we need to raise taxes as well as increase taxes on the rich and close loopholes on large corporations, but the Republicans just dig in their heels like a bunch of little kids and refuse as a whole (with threats to those in their own party who want to make up their own mind and gee, maybe perhaps might want to actually TALK to the Democrats and do something called COMPROMISE!) Obama seems to be the only one willing to compromise here lately. I am afraid that I see when people like Bachmann winning in Iowa that those that are voting for her are being brainwashed or are not even bothering to research both sides of the story before making such an important decision. I can hope and pray that the right thing will happen in the end...or I'm moving. Let's get more moderates in office that have a proven past of compromise. Don't give up voting when our votes mean so much in such a critical time. There are people in my own family that vote for a person just based on their views on abortion. When someone votes for someone just because of one point of view we are in serious trouble as a Nation.

Late to the "party" here.. And even at that its taken me hours to get this written..other distractions and I'm again up too late! extremely busy day with Real Life and all, but have been following all of this on my handy phone..sneaked peeks at work, etc..

Everyone here has said everything that needed to be said about Michelle Bachman. I will add my agreement to the opinion that she is more dangerous than Sarah Palin. I've thought that for quite awhile.

I don't want to talk politics or religion here really, but it's hard not to, when confronted with the political agendas of people like Michelle Bachman. Let me say right now that I know many Christians do NOT share her anti-gay philosophy. I have attended a liberal "mainline" church for years, who are "open and affirming" and welcoming to ALL people, including those of all sexual orientations. We have GLBTQ clergy as well, and perform and celebrate commitment ceremonies. When my state (WA) passes Marriage Equality for all (perhaps one of the next to do so), they will also perform marriages. I'm currently inactive but still support the church as a safe and welcoming place for GBLTQ folks who are seeking to practice their faith but may have been denied it in their previous places of worship. I'll also admit I'm a moderate to liberal democrat just to get that out of the way. Just about as far left in most things as MB is far right. I worry for the future of our country if someone like Michelle Bachman is ever elected President. I don't think she would be elected as she is too far right but she still scares me. Anyone who thinks as she does scares me as a matter of fact.

I have to say that I am so proud of Adam for speaking up. I'm sure he's opened himself up to criticism but so what else is new! Good for him! As I said in a tweet to him in my response to his statement, when it comes to addressing hate, silence is NOT golden. He is a beautiful and caring man and for him (and others) to have to listen to people like Michelle Bachman rant about homosexuality being wrong, sinful, and "curable" at her clinic, etc, and then see her smile about it, must be sheer hell for him even now.. Just imagine what it was like for him as a teenager, before he had anyone to talk to about his discovery at age 12 that he is gay and therefore different, and to hear the condemnation of GLBT by others like MB. I hope someday this idiocy will stop. Adam did not "choose" to be gay any more than I "chose" to be non-gay. We were just born this way. It's our "normal". Once people can accept that, the world will be a better place indeed. How can loving another human being and being in a committed relationship be a sin? Not in my book.

Lastly: Just love Adam!

@11:33

Like most people we tend to forget who is in the Congress and the Senate. Under Obama it has been Dems not Rep who have control of both houses, plus the President. Rep can be a party of no, but don't have the votes to change a thing. The Dems are in control in the congress and senate and have been for 2 years before Bush left office. Most people never get the facts correct because they look at the party of the President. Look at who controls house, which Rep do now,(just got voted in) but Senate is still Dems in contrrol.

I do not like this or religion threads. Wars have started over both and it is getting worse. People are more divided than ever all over the world. This is not good. We all need to look at ourselves and change what needs to be changed. Maybe we need to pick an Independant thinker.

Prepare to have your heart touched...

"I learned much in 30 years, it would be impossible to sum it up to a word or two, but as I have learned in my life, the word that makes most sense is Peace."

A beautiful article written by Charlene Strong.

Charlene Strong has an award-winning documentary film called for my wife...chronicling the making of an activist. She is also a commissioner for human rights in Washington State (appointed by Governor Christine Gregoire in 2008). Charlene travels the country extensively educating about the inequalities that continue to be a part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community without the recognition of full marriage rights.

The Reps ARE very powerful. That is what is wrong with the system. The minority, whether it be the Dems or the Reps. has been given too much authority. We, who were independents, go crazy with this. The bills proposed in the House die in the Senate because of fillibustering. That is the power of the Reps. ( and the Dems if they don't like the bill) Everything these days needs a super majority to pass which is hurtful to those in the majority.
Neither party is willing to change the rules, because they are thinking of what would happen if they were in the minority. I think the minority should have a vote, but NOT like this.

I am hoping that fair-minded, independent thinkers will NOT leave America, but speak up more than ever. This is NOT the Tea Party either!

I will also not apologize for getting political. Religion and politics are the 2 remaining elephants in the room. ( Adam, when on Idol, in a cute skit referred to an elephant in the room ( the question about his orientation) without naming it..and slyly said "I think it's pink". Love him ok -
Until we address these elephants,we will not get the civil rights for our loved ones. @11:33 I live very close to Canada and it is tempting, but I hope you stay with us and continue to speak out.

People are forgetting that Bush had dug our country into such a bottomless pit that Obama has spent two years trying to crawl to the surface to get something done. His first priority was to protect the health of our citizens and got called a Socialist for doing that. The Rep. party wants the govt. out of everything. No Regulatory systems, the better for big industry to line their pockets. Bush stacked the Supreme Court so big money could buy the cooperation of campaigning politicians with warehouses of money with no disclosure. Obama seemed our hope out of hell, but unfortunately
along came The Tea Party ( a stupid choice of names since these people apparantly don't know WHY the tea was dumped in the harbor---they must be reading the history books from Texas) the Tea Party keeps stoking the fires so that we are all getting singed. They actually said "Let the country go into default!"!!!!! I think my grandmother called that kind of stupidity, "cutting off your nose to spite your face"!

When a parties entire stated goal is to remove the first black president from office we can be sure they don't give a shit about the people of the country. Why don't the people they are supposed to be representing in their states, throw them out? Don't they read, don't they think, don't they speak? Wake up! We're in trouble here!

@ 10:19: They don't pay attention to anything other than what's being spewed to them and believe it hook, line and sinker. They are followers, lambs; not thinkers.
I agree 1000% with your post! Thank you for speaking up!

@9:17 I am well aware of this. What I was saying was that everything Dem's want to do for what the majority of American's (polls say) agree to such as increasing taxes and closing loopholes for the rich, the Rep's dig in their heels as a whole and say "no, no, no" to taxes no matter what. This happened during Bush's tenure as well as since the Rep's took the house back.

WTF!

Michelle Bachmann and her FACT MACHINE struck again.......she was campaigning today in the South and came on stage to an Elvis song and announced "It's Elvis' birthday today, let's all sing Happy Birthday to him"!.....

Actually it's the anniversary of his death!

Also read that 55 years ago today in 1956 Elvis' first album came out. Dont know if that is true or not? To mix up his birthday with his death is a hugh faux pax! ... Adamluv

I ran across this quote from former President Bill Clinton. In light of some of the commentary above discussing the difficulty of congress to get anything done etc.., and discussion of President Obama not being able to get them to agree on anything (almost..), I just thought this was funny and applies to the situation at hand. Not to make light of the mess that we are seeing right now..but you have to laugh once in awhile, and this made me laugh: : )

"Being president is like running a cemetery: you've got a lot of people under you and nobody's listening." –Bill Clinton

Very interesting discussion here (JAK you are my hero). People are talking about moving if MB is elected for president. If she is (and I really don´t think she will) the whole world would be effected. The US credibility would be zero. Could anyone see that woman have a serious talk with any other leader in the rest of the world? Well, Perhaps Italy´s Berlousconi, who is a joke too.
You might laugh at her, but she is really scary and the most scary thing is that people are voting for her. Let´s hope the narrow minded never get the power.

@ Sister

Just read the link to Charlene Stone's article.
Powerful stuff. You warned me about having my heart touched, but I wasn't ready for red eyes and a dripping nose. I really need to hug somebody right now, I'll hunt up my husband!
Thanks for sharing and I send you a cyber hug..

Openly-gay Presidential Hopeful Fred Karger Kicked Out of Debate After Meeting Requirements by...get this...Fox Network. Surprise, surprise.

Watch this video if you are interested...and learn about the paper towel vs. the napkin. It would be really funny if it weren't so sad.

What is the world in happening to this country!?

I had the pleasure to meet and talk to ( she was sitting at my table) Charlene Stone two years ago at a PFLAG Bellevue dinner. We showed this documentary at one of our meetings last year. @Sister, if you live in the area, look us up :)

Oh, what a small world it is! :) I haven't seen the documentary, but I would love to sometime. What an interesting story she shares.

My life is in a transitional period right now, but I may just look up the organization at a later date, when things settle down. Life twists and turns when one least expects it and, right now, I am in the middle of a big twist. :)

Keep up the great work lmb!

@sISTER AND @lmb - OMG! That video about Santorum is ridiculous but far worse than that is the exclusion of Fred Karger from Fox News. I guess they dont want anyone to know there are a few gay Republicans out there in TV land! Remember when the president of Iran stated in no uncertain terms that THERE ARE NO GAY IRANIANS - THAT THAT IS ONLY A WESTERN PERVERSION! Unbelievable Fox News - didnt think they could sink any lower but I was wrong. ... Adamluv

This is Rick Santorum and This is an idiot.....
They are interchangeable. He reminds me of some teachers I had who could bore you into a coma after a short time in their class!

I wish Karger luck in his suit against Murdoch, aren't there several suits ahead of his? Hell, I want to sue Murdoch! And Fox News and all their bubble head blonde clones!

My doctor's office has Fox News on in the waiting room ALL THE TIME, if my B.P. is up I tell the doctor if he wants it to be normal give me a remote to mute the TV............JAK

Yes, the elephants do need to be addressed and that's why I love this site. Besides loving all things Adam on 24/7, we are also open to conversation about critical social issues. I feel that so many hearts have opened over the past 2 years on this site, just because of the elephant being openly discussed, and that is a beautiful thing.

@Adamluv

The extremes in our society these days are really scarey. People in power feel they can impose their values and beliefs on others through censorship and control, and that is dangerous. I really am worried for the direction of our country. This extremism threatens the freedom of all.

@JAK

I agree that Santorum and Idiot should be in the same sentence! I love your comments and stories, especially when you become empassioned! Tell the doc to change the channel, not just ask for a remote. LOL. And, please, keep that BP under control. :)

Sister and Eva and JAK I couldn't agree with your more about the direction this country is going as well as the extremism encroaching into our politics. I never thought I would see this day here. I can't believe people are falling for such idiocracy. It deeply saddens and frightens me.

On a happier note, @Glitzylady I loved your Clinton quote. I think he was the BEST president in many many years. Enough said.

@daydreamin

I also think Clinton was the best president we have had in a long time.

I saw him in person when he was campaigning. He has unbelievable charisma, just like our Adam. :)
