Musictimes: Adam Lambert or Freddie Mercury? Queen's Brian May Says 'American Idol' Alum Has Better Range!!

You know those people who say they were "born in the wrong era" and wish they could have been a teenager in the 1960s or '70s? That is basically Adam Lambert, who rose to pop fame with American Idol at the turn of the decade. He was as close to late Queen singer Freddie Mercury as a new star could get, but he could not nail down a perfect fit in the music world.
Until Queen came calling in 2011, that is. Then the pieces fell into place immediately. One of the world's most storied rock bands got a third wind — after a forgettable era with Paul Rodgers — and Lambert got his chance to eschew pop for the coolest cover gig ever.
Now — get this — Brian May is throwing out some serious compliments.
"They're difficult songs to sing, Queen songs," he told Japan's Universal Music, via Billboard. "There's too much range. So many people can't sing them in the original key — even if they are good singers, Adam comes along, [and] he can do it easy. He can do it in his sleep! He can sing higher than even Freddie could in a live situation. So I think Freddie would look at this guy and think, 'Hmm ... Yeah. OK.' There would be a kind of, 'Hmm ... You bastard. You can do this.'"
Better range than Freddie? That is borderline blasphemous, but roll tide.
"He doesn't have to try," May said. "He is a natural, in the same way that Freddie was. We didn't look for this guy, [but] suddenly he's there, and he can sing all of those lines. ... He doesn't imitate; he just does his own thing."

They are both amazing
Freddie was yesterday, Adam is today. I don't care who can sing higher notes, both guys have been loved for themselves. Both were and are loved for their singing voices, sexiness and wonderful stage personality. Queen is lucky to have found Adam, and the timing is right. Adam needed this boost right now, and people are finally sitting up and listening to him. We don't need any more comparisons. It's not as if we can choose which concert to go to, Freddie or Adam. It's sad that Freddie is gone, but definitely not forgotten, but now we have Adam who sings all those songs easily, as Brian says. If Brian says much more I will begin to think he adopted Adam.
He can do it easy...
He's a natural...
He just does his own thing...
Three of the many qualities of Adam Lambert that make listening and watching him perform so enjoyable, so carefree, so perfect!
The first paragraph brings up a good point. I think that Adam has certainly created a niche for himself within the music world that has gained him without a doubt a passionate fan base, but someone of his caliber should have been dominating the charts and award shows since that platform on Idol. I'm just thrilled that the collaboration with Queen has given him solid recognition and a well deserved chance to shine, and I hope that his new album or next single will hit a sweet spot with an increased number of music listening audiences worldwide.
It must be so flattering for Adam to get such genuine high praise from Brian and Roger who don't seem to be too worried about alienating some Freddie diehards when they make some bold statements about Adam's talent. I personally have grown tired of comparisons at this point - may be because I have read every single article out there haha - but I do admire Brian and Roger's guts to say it the way it is. I have no doubts that it goes way beyond publicity and that they simply feel the desire to express how fortunate they are that the stars aligned :)
I think it's really important to note that Brian said Adam can sing "even higher than Freddie could in a LIVE situation" not that Freddie couldn't sing in that range in studio conditions etc.
That distinction seems to be overlooked by the media when writing headlines or paraphrasing Brian or Roger. Either way though, I'm loving the love Adam is getting...
Pretty sure Brian and Roger are just as tired as we are of the Freddie versus Adam thing. Both incredible performers. And thrilled to pieces for Adam, and Dr Bri and Roger for having this opportunity to perform their iconic music with a perfect match that they've found in Adam.
Of all the Queen frontmen after Freddie, Adam is the only one who even comes close to the essence of what Queen is all about. The others presented no threat to Freddie's legacy. They were either way too different, or didn't have the same type of power-voice that Adam has. Hence, the backlash from Queen purists. The very thought that someone could be as good as (or, gasp, better than) Freddie in the voice department is unthinkable to them, and it hurts deeply. It can be argued that Adam has the technically better voice. But Freddie wrote those songs, performed them, grew with them, evolved with them, owned them, with a voice that was born to sing them. Adam is the first and only one to even come close. Bri and Roger know they have a treasure in their possession. I give them credit for not being afraid to say so.
I hope these same claims are not being read over and over again by the general public as they are here. I'm an Adam fan and I'm sick of them. I don't want the ticket buying public sick of them. I wish Roger and Brian would quit comparing the two singers and just say Adam is great.
They've given very few actual interviews recently, about Adam... This article is a rehash of one that came out a few days ago.. They graciously said such lovely things about Adam, which is fabulous.. It's been picked up by many media sites all over the world..There are many many many more similar articles and blog posts that have not been posted here..
Interviewers and the media who print quotes from the interviews often leave out certain parts which would have puts things more into perspective.. For instance the title of the article posted here, really is the author of the article's own words, not Brian or Rogers... Brian didn't say Adam has a bigger range, or is better than Freddie... But that's what probably stands out in the article, unfortunately...
To be honest, I suspect Brian and Roger are extremely tired of the nasty comments and verbal abuse that they are subjected to, that they see on a regular basis on twitter from certain of Queen's (Freddie's) fans, and on both the official Queen Facebook and Brian's, on any article or news item containing Adam's name...I try to stay away from those...
I also suspect that they have said these extremely wonderful things about Adam in interviews, at least in part, to say "look, the new guy is completely worthy, he's extremely talented, so just ....." well, you know..... I'm more than sure they would prefer to just enjoy, and not feel defensive about their choice to go out there again, and about their choice of Adam as frontman..
I suppose there will always be this undercurrent of disbelief, and even anger from some fans, re Adam's abilities to hold his own with Queen, by those who have not seen and heard Adam sing live with Queen.. and probably by some who have. That's just the way it is... There are also hard core long term Queen fans who who have gone in as skeptics and have come away from the live concerts with very complimentary things to say about Adam..
I don't really think it's fair to try to compare them, nor should we.. They're both amazing... I recently downloaded the new Queen album "Queen Forever" and I have to say I love it.. Freddie had a powerful and very expressive voice and was certainly the voice of Queen.. Adam is AMAZING as well.. I am forever grateful that Adam Lambert came along to inspire Brian and Roger to go back on the road again.. I was able to hear the music played by the best, and sung by the next best thing to Freddie, Adam Lambert...
And I'm just thankful for Adam, period...
I think they have only said it once or twice, but the media picks up on it like it is news, when we have already heard it. But it is being repeated by different sources, all over the world. A lot of people are hearing it for the first time. Every time a new source picks up on it, in other countries, it seems to be translated and posted
here.
This topic has been done to death.
....
You don't need to have a better vocal range or a bigger vocal range to be a successful pop/rock singer.

Your comment is true but has nothing to do with the subject at hand which is about singing Queen music.
We all know there are people who have made it big in pop/rock world with limited or rather narrow vocal range. I don't think they are keen on trying to sing the Queen catalogue from A to Z...nor could they do it.

There are a lot of Queen tribute bands & Freddie impersonators.
Freddie didn't have the best voice in the world but he had a fabulous voice - the best voice for Queen - and was massively successful.

Please read what Brian and Roger have said. The ease Adam does it, LIVE and he can sing anything Queen has in their catalogue.
I know there are tribute bands/singers and impersonators. Some of them are painful to listen to. Most of them have rehearsed a certain number of (usually the most popular, most played) songs for certain shows or for their own programs. They could never manage the whole catalogue and do it pitch perfect and with their OWN TWIST!
ADAM RULES!!!
I don't care who can sing a higher range or who can sing a better range. This subject is so overdone it's ridiculous. Freddie was a brilliant singer and Adam is a brilliant singer. It's not a competition but there are fans who won't leave it alone. They feel they have to prove over and over that Adam is the best. Watching videos of Freddie singing is nothing compared with seeing him perform live. Perhaps think of it the other way around i.e. if Freddie (or indeed someone else) were singing in place of Adam. I imagine there'd be a total uproar of constant disapproval.
There's room for more than one great singer in the world.
What is ridiculous is to demand that fans on Adam Lambert fan site should equally be fans of other great performers - why have fan sites if you are "not allowed" to shout it from the bottom of your heart on that performer's fan site (in this case): Adam Lambert is the best!
