From The Line Of Best Fit: Nine Songs: Adam Lambert "All the songs here have a personal connection to me"

LINK TO THE INTERVIEW
Nine Songs: Adam Lambert

"The Queen frontman and solo star talks Jess Goodman through the songs that made him."

Note that this interview took place in London in January 2019, and is just now being published, hence the shorter hair..

Quotes from the MUCH longer interview, where Adam discusses songs that have special meaning to him, many from his childhood and youth..
Lambert’s enthusiasm for the topic of conversation is evident even before we meet - selecting a list of ten songs that he hadn't had the heart to cut down to nine quite yet. As someone who's been drawn to music for all of his life this enthusiasm is both of little surprise and refreshingly infectious."I definitely dug way back," he says of his choices. "A lot of these songs are much older. I was trying to find songs that were a part of my formative years." From all-out pop to civil rights anthems, from musical theatre to grunge and all the way back again, it's an eclectic set of favourites that Lambert offers. His fondness for this music and the moments it soundtracked in his life practically radiate from the singer throughout our conversation, as each song sparks a remembrance of its own story. "All the songs here have a personal connection to me," Lambert explains. "They're songs that I've either sung, or I’ve wanted to sing." Through self-discovery and heartache, darkness and success, the theme that connects these songs is simple: “These are the songs that made me who I am.”

These are the nine songs:

Just read the list and the first thought is I'm a Bonnie Raitt fan. Now I'm gonna go back and click on the link to absorb it all.

Very interesting article.
Laughed out loud at this "..If there was a boy in the audience who I thought was cute, I would sing this song to try to get his attention. It worked, like eight times out of ten. Thanks Bonnie.”
Makes me wonder how many 10s of times he used this one approach.

Good job Patria. What ever works for you!

Patria... listen to this.... Adam's OWN brilliant heartbreaking interpretation of "I Can't Make You Love Me" from an Upright Cafe performance. Break out the kleenex!

Anyone who hasn't seen/heard any of Adam's pre-Idol performances at the Upright Cafe is missing out on an important part of Adam's early career, IMO.

Adam can sing any song and make it his own! Enjoy!

BTW....I think I'm in the minority here....but I love this handsome photo of Adam with his shorter, but full, head of hair. It'll be interesting to see how much longer he lets it grow before he changes it again....hopefully by the Rhapsody tour, but doubt it.

But nevermind...I'll take Adam ANY way he wants to be. I'm a Glambert....and he's a GLAMELEON!

What a great interview! Each of those songs is so important to him and really relates to a major time in his life. He's so self-aware and smart about it all.

It was interesting to hear him saythat he had trouble getting theater roles because he was perceived as "too gay." I wonder if that is still an issue. He says he's been approached for some roles in the past ten years, but he has yet to do any real acting. I suspect it might still be an issue. I really want him to get into acting somehow. He has good instincts, great comic timing, and has a real presence. I want it to happen for him if he wants it, and I think he does.

Haha... Dee R Gee....you should be his agent! You'd have him doing EVERTHING if you could. Love your dedication. Just don't "spread him too thin", LOL.

Thank you for the link Nanbert. I had not come across that one.
Adam sings this song like each word has originated from inside his heart. Awesome!
He didn't take it away from Bonnie tho, she's just so unique and one of a kind, IMO.

On the subject of Adam's hair, if I were to guess I expect him to cut it for the tour. Simply because it's how he keeps cool on those hot stages. Maybe he will just tie it back???

You're welcome, Patria. No, I didn't mean Adam took anything from Bonnie...her rendition is iconic. But each rendition takes on an identity of its own when sung by different artists...some worse, some better, and some great, but different! In most cases, the criteria is the original rendition...if the artist is great enough....and Bonnie certainly is!

I am a bit distressed about the tendency of people today to think that a song is a singular property of the original singer/band/writer....NOT you, btw. But there are so many gorgeous pieces of music out there begging to be performed by new generations...that actually become more iconic by being performed by different artists. You see it with great classical music, handed lovingly down through the years (even centuries)....you see it in religious music. Why not today's and yesterday's popular music? Great music is to be performed, interpreted, and heard by everyone.

In this particular case, Adam complimented and burnished Bonnie's iconic music...to both of their credits....and brought the song back to life....just as he has been doing with Queen's music, Elvis's music, Cher's music, and many others. He has a unique and brilliant talent for that.

Got a parody song for Adam to sing. Instead of "Whole Lotta Love" he should sing "Whole Lotta Hair."

And BTW, I don't think he is going to cut his hair for the QAL tour. Just my opinion. All four original members of Queen went through their long hair days. And Brian still has his and it looks great.

Patria said...

I wonder if hair style defines us in anyway that can be generalized. Adam changes his hair continually and Brian has gone thru life with the same style. I have changed up my hair in many ways over my lifetime, but I know plenty of my high school classmates that are still have the same style. Like Brian they initially colored their graying hair, then gave it up.

Guys tend to find a hair style they like and stick with it. Brian is lucky he still has so much hair. He has said so himself. And I love it full silver pray. Very distinguished yet very rocknrol!

The thing I love most about Brians hair is when the stage is all blacked out, if Brian comes on, any little light in the back of the curtain will reflect it and let us know he's there. You cannot lose track of Brian. He cannot sneak on stage.
