Phillip Phillips and 2009 runner-up Adam Lambert are tied for third with $5 million apiece.
“Adam used the launching pad of American Idol very well to have a successful recording career,” says his co-manager Martin Kirkup. “I think the main part of his career still lies ahead of him.”

Congrats to Adam!!!
I believe this is just for this one past year. Very good for not having a huge hit,but he must have been paid well for his Glamily tour and in China, also the Queen shows!
Glad to know he isn't going hungry. Or without a bit of bling. ^_^
I'm waiting to see his new jeans on him.
About the time frame for these numbers:
"We calculate our earnings estimates with the help of data from Pollstar Pro, the RIAA, Nielsen SoundScan as well as industry veterans, the musicians’ handlers and some of the artists themselves."
"These numbers reflect pretax earnings from June 2012 through June 2013."
We're going to see bunch of media coverage about this. That's great Adam is number 3 after Kelly Clarkson.
I'm glad to know he's doing well, but this does mean I will no longer be enclosing the usual $20.00 in all his holiday cards! I have also cut my 'enclosure' off in cards going to the g'son. When they make more money than I do.....that's the cut-off! ........ JAK
Not bad... great for Adam, M
First and repeat.
Of course, he only gets $1 million of that himself since AI still gets half, taxes, agents, etc. It's good but doesn't make you super rich. 2014 should be even better with a new album, more appearances on Glee, and I hope a US tour! Glad to see he's doing so well!
AI doesn't still get half, does it? He is not under 19E anymore.
The article said the "older graduates" don't have to pay anything back to Idol at some point. I was under the impression that Adam has pretty much cut ties with them (as all of them eventually have the option of doing, once the agreed-to contract is up) and is no longer required contractually to give them anything. It's been 5 years.. So I'm guessing perhaps he's past the time limit. But not sure exactly what the statute of limitations is on that... Anyone know?? And of course he has to pay his management etc.. not to mention income tax and all that. But the nice thing to know is that he's in the top 3 earners of Idol alums.. And he's making a decent living... with potential for much more...
From the article:
"Older graduates of the show no longer have to worry about handing back most of their earnings to Idol, but more recent winners must turn over about half of their income—before paying any remaining agents, managers and attorneys, not to mention Uncle Sam."
Scotty McCreery said this:
"Last year, McCreery estimated he’d only pocket somewhere around one-fifth of his gross earnings.."
But he's only 3 years out from his win in 2011.. so might be considered a "newer" winner....
I imagine these celebrities get write offs with charity work work and appearances too.
Any possibility that winners are more indebted to AI than any of the runners-up?
Adam parted with 19 in Jan. 2013. 19 only gets their half from albums and merchindise sales. Earnings from Queen concerts, 19 had nothing to do with it. All the concerts after Jan. 13, revenue earnings from them 19 didn't get anything unless they sold merchandise and albums made prior to jan. 13. I doubt Adam paid half of his earnings between 6/12 and 6/13 to 19. P2 and Scotty yes but not Adam.
Adam parted with 19 management in March of 2012. He parted with 19 recording and 19 merchandise in Jan. 2013. P2 and Scotty are still with 19R, 19Mgt, and 19Merch. I can see 19 getting half of earnings but not Adam.
@10:33am yes that is another possibility that winners might be indebt to 19 more than other finalists.
From the copies of contracts we have seen Adam should be done with any obligation to 19. Winners do often have longer obligations to 19 than runners up. And of course if they are still with 19 they will have to pay that split.
I'm sure Adam has people to help manage his finances and reduce his tax liability.
Great to read that Adam is doing well financially although after taxes and other obligations that figure will be much less. But he is able to pay his bills, spend on clothes and some bling and go out and have fun. He may not reached the degree of success that so many of us wanted for him, but Adam seems to be doing all right and we have a new album to look forward to and possibly a tour this year.
Even though Adam's second album did not do well with the number of sales, I would guess that his concerts with Queen in Europe and his appearances in Asia are what brought in the money for him during the dates listed. Internatinally is where he seems to be making his money. Hopefully with the release of a third album this year and possibly some concert dates, Adam will do as well as or better than the previous year. There are probably other projects and opportunities that we know nothing about at this time that will keep on bringing in the cash.
Hi 12:31pm. I enjoy reading your posts, but your computer? is doing some crazy stuff by adding soooo many spaces before and after your comments. Notice that?
xo laura
Adam donates a ton of his own money to various charities, as well.
I would say money isn't that important to Adam. It's nice to have some, but it's not the most important thing in life. Plus he donates a lot.
Is it that Adam donates a ton of money to various charities or just that he lends his name and/or support to a particular event and will make an appearance and perform at that event? I know that he also has asked his fans to support certain charities or causes also since I have done so in the past. Money may not be the most important thing in Adam's life, but you need it to pay bills, to enjoy a certain lifestyle in CA, and to buy stylish clothes and bling to wear. Adam may have done well and is comfortable according to the Forbes list of Idol earnings, but he needs that third album to be a success so he can tour with it and continue to bring in the big bucks to live in the style to which he has become accustomed. He'd probably like to own a house one day and, of course, that will take a big chunk out of anything he earns. Let's hope he has a business or financial manager who is putting something aside for his future also. The music business is very crazy and unpredictable as is our economy, so you need to take care of financial issues while you can.
@7:47PM- Some very sensible comments you make about financial issues and having enough money for what Adam needs in his life. But do you think that he, along with so many younger people today, is really thinking about the distant future and having enough to live on? I don't know about that. I hope that whatever he does musically and otherwise in 2014 does bring him financial stability but moreso the recognition, acceptance and success that he so deserves esp. here in the US. They say that money can't buy you happiness, but it sure helps.
32 year olds like Adam better be thinking about their future financial stability. Even those of us who did 30 years ago are getting a little nervous about the future.
And our future won't be all that long!
PP number 3?? Give me strength!
Adam has said more than once he has a financial manager to help him. He has also said he isn't the best money manager himself, so has others looking out for his financial decisions. I suspect he's doing just fine.
And rumors tonight that he may be looking to buy a house.. so he's most likely making some good and solid choices. And feeling very financially confident. Which suggests (to me...) that he's got some good, realllly good, things coming up in the future, probably the NEAR future.
He's certainly been a happy happy man lately. Which also suggests to me that we're going to be kept VERY busy keeping up with Adam this year :))
Which makes me very happy happy indeed!
Fantastic that Adam is #3 but disappointed for Kelly that she didn't make #1. I much prefer her voice and music to Carrie's but the US of A is a big c&w loving nation.
