That could be the unofficial motto of American Idol, which kicks of what feels like its 9,000th year – but in fact is merely Season 14 – Wednesday on Fox.
It’s something of an accepted phenomenon that at least one finalist in any given American Idol year has a good shot of being more successful than that season’s winner. And frankly, the show badly needs another household name superstar, one way or another: Its ratings continue to tumble, and rivals like NBC’s The Voice have eclipsed Idol in numbers and popularity. Tellingly, this also marks the first year that CTV had decided not to air American Idol at all, with Canadian broadcasting being picked up by Yes TV.
As the granddaddy of talent shows looks for another big name, here’s a glance back at the 10 most memorable Idol finalists who didn’t actually end up winning it all.
Adam Lambert
Kris who? Although Kris Allen was the winner of Idol’s Season 8, Adam Lambert was arguably the star of the show, and perhaps one of the last Idol finalists to truly become a household name. Not only was he the first openly gay artist to have an album debut at the top of the Billboard charts, but he toured with the surviving members of Queen, stepping into the big, big shoes of one Freddie Mercury.

Yea AI needs some tweaking and revamp...maybe Adam could be roped in for this purpose. Actually nothing wrong with AI per se but somehow after S8, there seems to be a kind of doldrums effect; Adam might have set the benchmark too high and it's difficult to match. Since S8, I only got impressed by Amber and Angie; after that didn't follow except for the occasional glimpses. The winners are not as good as those who should have won and that too may have caused many AI fans feeling disillusioned, questioning the validity of the talent quest which should be based on talent not as some insinuated, rigged votes.
@Lam-my
I would never say that about Kelly Clarkson. She most definitely deserved to win and she did.
Kelly Clarkson is one of the former AI contestants/winners who has been successful too.
9:51.....Fair enough, Kelly Clarkson was a deserving winner; but I started following AI from Season 2 so perhaps might not know her in depth but I am not a fan even after listening to her songs later. Actually it was Clay Aiken that started me on AI when I heard him sing Bridge Over Troubled Waters and that was my first experience regarding what I said about the winners not being as good as those who should have won; and this was the pattern in quite a number of seasons...most notably S8. But Kris was one very talented and amicable contestant I'd say.
To stop this maybe the judges should be able to vote also!
Clay Aitken is overrated, and there are better versions of Bridge Over Troubled Waters than his.
Adam Lambert shattered AI!!! That's it!!!:) Never again that they will find another one to top that!;)))
Canadian
Canadian.....Not only did he shatter AI, many other singing shows as well...it's like a perfect clean sweep. lol!
I think Jordin Sparks was the worthy winner of her AI season.
I don't watch AI now except when Adam's on. However, I would watch it if Simon were still on the judging panel.
Adam is the American Idol Game-Changer.
Season 8 was the biggest upset of any AI season. The press treated Adam like the winner immediately after the show. He had more reporters surrounding him, more attention in general. He was so obviously out of the norm for that show, it was incredible. Kelly, in additional to her talent, got the added boost of being the FIRST winner. It's been an interesting phenomenon on AI regarding who won and who didn't. I look back at some seasons and just say, "Huh?" But for the most part, the winners and almost-winners have been amazingly talented. But Adam is the one who has stood out from the crowd more than any other. JMO, of course! :)
@Dee R Gee,
Not just your opinion among many others, including, "dare I say", Brian and Rogers of Queen; Meat Loaf, etc, etc, etc.; and evidently, American Idol themselves. They seem to keep inviting Adam back seemily every chance they get, and showing him when ever possible!
I think pretty much he is a winner in their eyes TOO. WHAT? SUPRISE, SUPRISE!
RCA where art thou? Oh, gathering up the money from the lastest sells Adam has genetated from his UK NYE'S latest smash appearance with Queen; I see you!!!
Jessica Sanchez should've won Idol the year she was in it. She has a lovely voice. Adam thought she was pretty special too.
Adam's is the only male voice I've liked (loved!) since American Idol began. :-)
Adam not only broke AI he has changed the minds and hearts of people around the world. He had given a voice to so many who were afaird or unable to speak up. He's shown us that it's not only ok to be our selves but it an amazing wonderful feeling to say here I am this is me. Adam is special he one of those rare people born to make a difference. I would say regardless of the outcome of AI Season 8 Adam and all who follow him are inspired by him and love him are winners.
Rose Petal, You said it perfectly. Adam was "born to make a difference." And he is doing it every single day, both as a singer an as a person. His light shines very very bright.
Just read Forbes Idol power list that has Adam way down the line at 2.5 mil. Obviously thecQueen tour not part of equation but he did Glee and toured with Wag at some large concerts so I don't see how he made so little. Just throwing it out there. Btw, not sure in this day and age Kelly would win audio. Big voice female singers no longer win no matter how good they are.
Here's the link to the Forbes article.. Away from my laptop so can't post it as a thread topic right now...
http://www.forbes.com/sites/zackomalleygreenburg/2015/01/06/top-earning-american-idols-2014/
Adam earned good money last summer on the Queen tour, but I guess it wasn't included. Also, Adam did not sell his own music in 2014. Hope he'll be high on the list for 2015.
It shouldn't matter so much if Adam was at the top or the low end of the Forbes list...He made his stamp worldwide and whoa! he made 2.5 million oooh-la-la! Thanks Dark Side for info. Hey Adam, how about a super ice-cream treat for all Glamberts, with large red cherry at the top, that's you!
This is what the article says of how they calculated the $$$:
"Methodology
Our estimates are calculated with the help of data from Pollstar, the RIAA and Nielsen SoundScan as well as industry veterans, the musicians’ handlers and some of the artists themselves. These numbers reflect pretax earnings from June 2013 through June 2014."
I guess during that period, Adam didn't really have big concerts - just Glee, and one-off concerts. The period is after WAG and before Q+AL.
So much emphasis on $$$$.
