Going forward, industry insiders note pure talent will trump any affiliation to the franchise. Borchetta cites Daughtry and Adam Lambert as nonwinners who’ve successfully navigated post-Idol waters. “For any artist in today’s market, I would not advise being reliant on any television show for the ongoing success of their career,” says Jan Smith, a vocal producer who has mentored Usher and Justin Bieber.

Interesting perspective on "life after Idol" for the contestants. The vast majority of contestants, including winners, have not attained superstardom, but many have done well in their own level. With the possible exception of Kelly C., Adam is the only one with a true international fanbase. And although his US fanbase isn't as large as he'd like it to be, he is still able to SOLO tour in the US. That's rare for AI alums. Some AI alums do the college campus circuit, tour with other acts or open for other singers, while others do local clubs and venues. Some put out multiple albums on small independent labels. I think the article said that Lee DeWyze just released his sixth album.

I put Adam in the top four of AI alums. Kelly, Carrie, Adam, Daughtry. JHud is extremely successful, of course, but she is not concentrating on releasing albums or touring at this point. She's doing very well with acting. P2 is the only one post-Adam to have a big hit song, but he's in a lawsuit with his label, opened for John Mayer for a while, and said he was going to do a solo tour, but I don't know where or when or what types of venues. Apparently he is upset that his last album did not sell well.

The big difference with Adam, as I see it, is that he has connected with BIG names in the business and has performed for and with some of them. I never see other ex-Idols (maybe Kelly?) with these same connections. Adam looks, sings and acts like a celebrity star. Just comes natural to him. Sorry to go so long. Just full of thoughts this morning!

Just to add, I know Carrie U. is very successful, but she's in country music, which is a separate world and doesn't really compete with the pop world. Country music tours within itself, competes for awards within itself, etc. I don't know about Carrie internationally.

I think most importantly, as the author has eluded to - Adam has successfully "navigated" the backstabbing world of the music and Hollywood industry, all the while maintaining his integrity, grace, and persona. That in itself would cause much envy among contemporary singers. His raw talent and attractive personality is highly respected by noted musicians, record producers, music executives, song writers, managers - the behind the scenes people who grease the wheels of every artist. No one who meets him has an ill word to say about him - that in itself makes him stand out - that and his IQ.
