Adam thought it was OK at the time, and wanted to push the idea that he was gay, and this was his lifestyle. I am sure he wishes he hadn't been so public with his thought now. But it is too late, we all have to live with our mistakes. He has changed his image now, but his life style is the same. Now people are not so shocked as they were in 2009, and Adam has learned not to be so public about himself, except he still does do some of these wild things in his concerts, where he has more freedom to express himself. He has emerged in public in a different way in the last couple of years, and I wish the magazine had used newer pictures of all the Idols. You can barely recognize Adam from 2009 until 2016. There is nothing special about being gay, you either are or you are not, we are all human beings, equally, and Adam shouldn't have to prove anything. At the AMA's Adam wasn't mature enough yet, to know that his voice was all he had to prove to the public, not his lifestyle. JMO
It does seem like, for some publications, time stood still in 2009 and the only pictures they could find of Adam are from that early time. So often they choose the oldest, most out of date pictures of him. It is frustrating. His current pics are so gorgeous. He's come a long way.
Adam said it was just one performance. This is what he gets 7 years later? It's a crying shame some can't let it go. We should all write the publication!
Anne Marie...a well-organised, chronological piece, your above comment.
You're right that he did not have to push his gay person out so much; even any other person in the limelight of showbiz will not be tolerated by the discerning public, let alone gay. Bear in mind they are the ones who buy their tickets to keep them going. Adam has become acutely aware and now just concentrates on his art. Having said that, I still maintain there was nothing wrong with his AMA performance; take it as theatre, it happens he was singing/portraying a sexual song. And to cancel his subsequent shows the very next day or so, is like using a hammer to kill an ant. Like he has always maintained, there was no intention on his part to offend anyone, also remember he was a theatre kid from age 10. So then what about the Hair scene of stark nudity in which Adam was a part of, though it lasted only a couple of seconds and the stage lights were out, it seems.
Adam said f U and continued all through his GNT kissing Tommy, just to prove some point. I know a lot of his fans liked it, and just as many did not. He did the same thing with the song Ring of Fire. Simon called it rubbish, so what did Adam do event to this day, he still sings his own rendition of it, just to prove he can, and no one says he can't. Actually I like his Ring of Fire rendition. You would have to have a VERY broad mind to accept his AMA performance. It was done at the wrong time and the wrong occasion. JMO He was a totally unknown, and this was his chance to prove what a great voice and talent he has. Thank God Queen saw his talent and voice or he would have never made it into the stardom that he has. They are the gift from God for him.
Actually on that AMA show, Lady Gaga smashed a wine bottle on the piano keys and put her leg on the piano keys...so what kind of mind is needed to accept that? less or more open mind? While Adam acting out the gay sexual portrayal based on the lyric of his song, FYE, is deemed totally wrong? I take them both as stage performances, the mindset should be that. There was an act on another show where Lady Gaga was portrayed being thrown into a fiery furnace; no complaints whatsoever; that to me was horrible, more so than Adam's AMA. Open, broad, narrow, mindedness is very arbitrary in the case of Adam's AMA performance; logic, less prejudice, has more accuracy in judging Adam's supposed extreme indecency. Why Adam continued to prove his point even into the GlamNation tour...he simply could not be bulldozed over and stood his ground to show he was not doing anything wrong. He used F U at the end of the GlamNation tour specifically at people who put him down and always said no, no, to him...that was what he said and not to prove anything; I think he must have tolerated so much injustice and double standard, he had to finally let it go by lashing it out. Now that everything is buried, why rig it up in the People Magazine / Idol edition on top of that...Exploitation!
Ouch! When I opened the magazine at the local store and took a glance at that infamous AMA pic again, I felt a pretty nasty sting. It still hurts, and the fact that People primarily chose to dwell on the past doesn't help it either. Opinions differ, but I think that Adam made a bad move 7 years ago and nearly killed his career. It is still haunting him (and many of us, I believe). I think he tried too hard to prove himself as all he needed to do is kill it with a stellar vocal performance at that first big milestone after Idol. He learned and I'm thrilled how much more sophisticated, polished, and professional he has become. He slayed in Atlanta tonight. I am planning to write People Magazine a letter. Their coverage on Adam is pretty poor.
If this is an Idol edition, why aren't all the scan photos of him actually performing on Idol? Idol photos in comparison with the Adam and Brian photo would have told the story......the success story.
Too bad they spiced it up with the AMA performance photo. 'Shame on you. People!'
My immediate reaction to Adams much awaited AMA performance was despair........I stood in front of the TV and cried, "no Adam, no!" I knew it meant disaster. Actions accepted in a concert were not at that time accepted on a TV awards show. The video clip for the rehearsal of that performance was not overtly sexual. That was the performance the producers of the AMAs were expecting to see. Producers have to trust the performers........so.......Adam's career and acceptance were slowed down in the USA.

Hooray for today....he's welcomed in the USA.
