The 34-year-old went on to give props to Idol for helping him define his musical performance style.

It was interesting for me to be on Idol, because they were trying to figure out who I was, and I was like, “Well, I like all this [nostalgic rock ‘n’ roll music].

” You know, why do I need to be defined by a genre. I don’t really get that. You know, it’s a TV show. I was like, “I can sing the rock music, and you don’t really have a rocker, so I’ll go sing rock music.”

And so yeah, so I did that, and towards the end of it, I realized, well, now I have a shot at being on the radio and having a contemporary music career, and I want to make the kind of music that I like to listen to, and I still love rock ‘n’ roll, so how do I kind of put those both together.

Adam has this adamant aversion to genres in pop music and yet on Idol, the idea of genre got harped on, no end even till the last season; which I watched when Adam and Laleh gave such a genre-less refreshing performance. Laleh, midway into the performance came on stage looking like a princess wearing an opulent gown and Adam slammed it home.
Mmm, Adam, my genre for you is pop-rock-opera. lwl!

I've heard this much too often...that Adam did not need to win Idol to make it big / worldwide. No doubt about that, but that is not the issue nor the contention. My unresolved question is still the same...Why did Adam not win? That was a very huge experience he much needed at that time when he was about to break out as a superstar. Who knows, he might not even have done the AMA the way he did because being the Winner of Idol might have curtailed that; but Adam would say, no regrets; and I would support that.
