It's not JUST young people who say "you guys".....I use it all the time... ...and I'm referring to "you people"...not meant as male or female....just "you" plural.

It's not hypocritical, Adam, it's just an inclusive "you".

Saying "you guys" is so common. It just means "you people." It's not un-pc. It's not sexist or anything. It's just what we say. English has just one pronoun for a singular "you" and a plural "you," so we all wind up being "guys" for the sake of convenience.

I'm bad also using you guys a lot!

That pretty well covers it. Adam, I think you're safe from offending anyone.

Using the word "gals" would mean that one is addressing ONLY females. But it doesn't matter anyway, because "guys" is always correct for a GROUP of people.

So Lam-my.. your "righteous" collegue was wrong...and quite rude to her supervisor as well. HE was the one with the English degree from Berkeley, and, I suspect, too much of a gentleman to correct her about his proper usage.

U.S. women have NEVER found that being referred to as "guys" make them "feel good to be addressed on a par with their male counterparts" as you suggest above. That's not only ludricrous, but it's downright insulting...however, excusable when spoken from a different culture halfway across the world. Languages definitely take on a life of their own when divided into distantly separate locations with quite different cultures....such as Singapore and the United States.

Of course "guy" is male in the singular ONLY ... but either/both genders in the plural -GUYS!
Read the WHOLE definition in the dictionary...not just the first few words. We're discussing PLURAL. I didn't make the rules, I can only read them....as can you...if you choose.

Your example of addressing a mixed group as "gals" and the "macho guys" walking out has absolutely no relevance to this discussion... just "smoke screen".

Language changes with time and use. You guys or hey guys is gender neutral. Dude has become neutral as well. It's not just what has been defined in a dictionary; spend some time with people under 30. I'm surprised Adam missed this.

"You guys" has been used in common American English usage for YEARS. It's a casual non gender specific term for including whoever happens to be addressed in a group of two or more people. I wouldn't necessarily use it in a formal situation but amongst good friends, yes, or perceived friends in casual conversation.

" Guys" is definitely proper, but seems a tad informal for some situations. I have found myself using "you all" or "you folks" when I felt the occasion/group called for it.

I've got no problem with saying 'guys' to mean both sexes, but I feel uncomfortable with myself when I do it. I prefer things like, 'hey everyone,' 'you all' and 'peeps'. I'm not comfortable with 'gals' either. If it's all girls, i call them girls. (Should they be called women - ???)

It's a lot like my name. Many people automatically reduce my name to Barb. I'm not going to call them out and I do answer to it. But if asked my name or presenting my self I always go with Barbara. I sign every thing Barbara. It makes me feel good when people call me Barbara without hesitation and fits my self image.

Forgot to add 'Ladies' to my list of how to address a group of all females. It's actually my favorite. For any age.

If you know any "ladies"....not always sure about this group, LOL. Some of the comments that turn up during the "streams" can get a bit raunchy! Just came from there, and my face is still red! Oh my!

"You guys" is one thing but I intensely dislike "Yous guys" - "Yous" pronounced "ewes"!!!!

I am so sorry you have had to delete comments. What gets me is that these so called idiots log into an Adam Lambert site in the first place - Why????? They do not like him, huhhh!!!! Why do people waste their time and energy on someone they cannnot stand anywaty!!!!! Closet Glamberts????? Sick assholes!!!!!

The good news is that since the blog owner instituted the sign in process for blog commenting, we rarely have had to delete comments. A few years ago we were having a serious problem with troll comments. We do occasionally get "spam" comments that are advertisements but are not troll comments etc. Eliminating the opportunity to post comments anonymously made the ability to post untraceable no longer possible. Thankfully!

The comments that you noticed had been deleted in this thread were deleted by the author of the comments, not by any of us blog administrators (i.e. Admin, AdminFan, Broddybounce, or myself). Her comments were totally appropriate and in keeping with the theme of this thread. She is a regular here but chose to remove herself from the discussion.

Thanks for your comment mentioning the deleted comments so we could explain the actual situation....

I'm sorry she deleted her comments. I didn't get the chance to read them but from what I read about them she had a good point.
