Q+AL CONCERT REVIEW: Arizona Republic, Phoenix/Scottsdale, July 16, 2019

Spectacular review of Q+AL's show in the Phoenix area at the Talking Stick Resort Arena* located on the Salt-River Pima Maricopa Indian Reservation just outside Scottsdale, AZ.  This terrific writer/reviewer, Ed Masley, absolutely gets Brian, Roger, Adam and the overall concept of Q+AL (and puts the San Jose critic to shame!).  To top it off, the piece includes a whopping 66-image picture scroll!

"...their sold-out concert felt at least a little like a victory lap for Queen, whose popularity has not only endured but transcended the comforting glow of nostalgia. ... I haven't seen that many teenagers singing along at a classic-rock concert since before most of those kids were even born. ... So yes, they are the champions, my friends."
"...[Adam Lambert has] definitely risen to the challenge in a way that suits the music and the memory of Mercury much better than their previous attempt to fill the void ... you get the flamboyance and an awe-inspiring vocal range that makes it feel like he was born to sing these songs."
"...he's the perfect singer for the task at hand and...in fact, his talents would be wasted on most other artists' music – "Killer Queen" performed on top of a piano while fanning himself. ... It was brilliant."
"...looking every bit the proper rock god... ...  He's a charismatic presence with all the bravado and swagger required. You could even see an actual twinkle in his eye on the video monitors during "Somebody to Love," which featured some of Lambert's most impressive vocals of the night.  And to be clear, a vocal standing out as something special in the context of the other vocals he turned in at Tuesday's concert had to be astonishingly brilliant, which this was."

*In case you found the name of this venue as odd as I did: no, "Talking Stick" is not the brand name of the latest tech company sponsoring stadiums & arenas.  It is a Native American term referring to a traditional tool resembling a small totem pole that is used during tribal council meetings.  Still used by a number of tribes, the stick is passed from person to person as they speak and only the person holding it is allowed to talk at that time.  Talking Stick is the name of the casino resort overall. Absolutely, Sue ... and, yes, Sunflower, with my favorite one above -- what a great shot, love that look on his face (and Roger's too)..!

And expounding upon what you said, Dee... THIS....

"...an awe-inspiring vocal range that makes it feel like he was born to sing these songs. ...he's the perfect singer for the task at hand and...in fact, his talents would be wasted on most other artists' music..."

I mean ... RIGHT?!? SO spot on! It's like this writer was reading our minds ... He's one of us!! Glad he's communicating to the masses what makes Adam so special, and so special to Queen's music.

Brilliant review and well deserved !

Love it that the teenagers are taking interest, and singing along. They are the people that buy music these days and young adults. They may look up Adams name and will lead it to his own music he recorded. Will help Adams sales. Love the reviews right on point.

Absolutely splendid review...and absolutely true! Yes... if the reviewer wasn't "one of us" before that concert, he is NOW! Adam is finally getting the type of review that he's always so richly deserved....unfettered admiration for his MANY talents....and his PERFECT matching with Queen!

No, he's NOT Freddie.....he's ADAM! THAT's worth celebrating!

BTW...If anything, Adam is in his best voice ever. And, is it my imagination, or does he seem to "trod those boards" with greater authority than ever before? His presence is just awesome!

That reviewer didn't know what hit him...he was absolutely overwhelmed by Adam!

Adam's voice has gotten deeper over the past ten years. It's richer and more resonant. He sounds less boyish and more mature. It's a one-in-a-billion voice.

I am so glad I discovered Adam and he is simply the best as the Tina Turner song goes. Perfected in every way. I know we all have faults, but I just had to say that about Adam Lambert. I can't help it.

Exactly, Dee R Gee....Adam's voice has just arrived at his "sweet spot". From what I've read and heard, tenors don't usually come into their full voice until their mid-30's....i.e. their voice gets fuller, richer and stronger in the lower registers, while still keeping everything in the upper registers. That's where Adam is now....and just WOW! Plus his stamina is inhuman...thanks to his superb technique and care of his voice.

I so agree with all here even me. Lol
