Adam Lambert was dropped from Dick Clark’s ABC Rockin’ Eve performance, nobody seemed to check out Jennifer Lopez’s outfit. Although she has a great body, the bodysuit leaves little to the imagination. It’s now the talk of the Internet.

Top 5 Crazy Rumors of 2009

Next up on the list, the runner-up, number-2, the public wondered about Adam Lambert's sexuality. At one point, people thought he was heterosexual and it was all an act and then that flipped around completely and basically, the straight up question on the Ask.com post: "is Adam Lambert straight?" And that brings us to the number-1 crazy celebrity rumor of 2009. Miley Cyrus is pregnant. No, I did not just state that as a fact. Once again, it was the major mis-conception of the year. The so-called story was that Miley and Nick Jonas had a love child and it spread like a wildfire across the web. But, of course, it got proved to be false and that's exactly what made it the craziest celeb rumor of the year.

Adam Lambert lights up New Year's Eve at Gridlock party

His performance at the Paramount Pictures lot toned down on the theatrics but delivered on the music.

By Shirley Halperin

January 2, 2010

"Do I look like a firework?" Adam Lambert cooed from the stage at Gridlock's fourth annual New Year's Eve bash. "That was my motivation."

Sporting his signature finger-less gloves and going a little heavier on the usual glitter and guyliner allotment, the "American Idol" runner-up had his work cut out for him at the Paramount Pictures lot Thursday night: executing his first full set of original music in front of about 4,500 revelers, each of whom had paid at least $150 to get in and had already downed a few, and making a proper return to the spotlight -- complete with fireworks--following the American Music Awards fiasco that ostensibly got him disbarred from big-ticket television specials like Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.

And like any good professional entertainer, Lambert delivered, only this time without the cheap theatrics. Sure, there was the occasional crotch grab and pelvic thrust (all self-directed), but his most controversial move of the night turned out to be a dramatic swig from a flask, followed by a disclaimer of sorts. "I'm not promoting alcoholism by any means," he cautioned, "but long live rock 'n' roll!" Downright saccharine compared with the AMAs a month ago.

Is this a new, dialed back Adam Lambert? Hardly. This is what a $50,000 nontelevised production budget affords you, and as the man of the hour explained to reporters earlier in the night, "the show was thrown together last minute . . . kind of fly by the seat of our pants." Indeed, his 40-minute performance lacked the sophisticated stage direction of "Idol" but felt more like a club gig, and Lambert, ever the showman, seemed happier for it.

Clearly relishing his headlining slot, Lambert hit his groove with dance-floor-ready songs such as "For Your Entertainment," the title track off his debut album, and "Fever," which, he explained to the crowd, was also recorded under the influence (Lady Gaga was to blame).

But his best moment was undoubtedly the grand finale: wailing Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" with the same conviction that carried him through four months of competition on "Idol."

So was it as good for the crowd as it was for him? Considering the name of the event, attendees seemed pleasantly surprised by the lack of traffic, both inside the grounds and out, allowing for easy viewing. The party itself spanned six studio-sized streets with multiple DJs and a second stage hosted by reality star Shayne Lamas, but there was plenty of elbowroom.

One recent transplant from New York City, dancer Kumari Suraj of North Hollywood, marveled at how stress-free an L.A. New Year's can be. "This is like our fake New York on a smaller scale so we can tolerate it," she said. "It's nice."

That sentiment was echoed by Miracle Mile resident Oscar Triana, who said he chose Gridlock as an alternative to "something obvious like a club," and big names such as hostess Pamela Anderson and Adam Lambert didn't hurt, either. For others, such as Daisy Meyer from the Valley, a Lambert fan who had actually attended the "Idol" finale, the night was all about the people watching.

Naturally, the person taking most stock of the environment was Lambert himself, who revealed earlier in the night that on New Year's Eve 2008, he was also performing, as part of a cabaret just down the road on La Cienega Boulevard.

"I sang at midnight like I'm doing tonight," he reminisced. "Only there's a couple more people at this venue."

Make that the last understatement of his fairy tale year.

An American Idol Mom
WD talks to Adam Lambert’s #1 fan—his mom, Leila
By Angela Ebron Posted December 29, 2009 from WomansDay.com
An American Idol Mom

What was Adam like as a little boy?
He was very precocious. I took him to a lot of plays and concerts when he was small, and he always found a deeper meaning in them while I always took things literally. One time we went to see Les Miserables when Adam was 8. Afterward, he went into this elaborate discussion about how things were staged. He was so inquisitive, always asking questions. When he was about 5 years old he asked, “If God is in the sky, how does he see through the roof?” I had to tell him, “I’ll get back to you on that.”

What was your reaction the first time you realized Adam had such an incredible voice?
I remember he was in a children’s production of Fiddler on the Roof when he was about 10 years old. I’d never watched the rehearsals. So during the show when he got on top of a table and let out this note, I just looked at his dad and said, “Where’d that come from?”

Did you always believe that your son would make it in the music business one day?
Adam has always said that you don’t get discovered, you have to work for it. I thought his hard work would be what would pay off for him—and it has.

How has life changed since American Idol?
It’s very surreal. I have a hard time realizing that my son is now a household name to many people. The beauty is he’s still living in the same town he’s lived in for the last nine years and he still has the same friends. But the amount of work he’s doing has changed. Although he can’t always go places and he has to try to be more inconspicuous, he really appreciates the love and support of his fans. They have touched his life. Once when we were at a restaurant, a woman from another table came up and asked if he’d sing “Happy Birthday” to her daughter. I said, “No, we’re eating,” but Adam said, “It’s OK, Mom,” and told the woman that he’d stop by after we’d finished. He went over in a little bit and sang to her daughter. It was a wakeup call for me.

Many people thought Adam should have won American Idol. Do you think not winning may actually be better, given the success of other Idol alums like Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry?
I really don’t think it matters. Being first, second or third—one isn’t any better than the other. I think Adam would be in the same position if he’d won.

What was your favorite American Idol performance by Adam?
I loved when he performed “Satisfaction.” And “Black or White.” And “One.” I can’t pick a favorite!

What do you think of Simon Cowell?
I never really met him. Paula was the one who’d take the time after every show to come over and talk. She was so supportive. But Simon’s critiques were right a lot of the time. He knows what he’s talking about.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about Adam?
A lot of people think he’s caught up in the business, but when I see him with his friends he doesn’t even talk about his career.

If you had to describe your son in one word, what would it be?
Honest.

What was your favorite Mother’s Day present from Adam?
A card he made for me when he was 15. There was a flower on the front and each petal was cut out from foil. Inside he’d written a poem about how much he loved and appreciated me. I still have that card.

What do you think of Adam’s For Your Entertainment album cover?
It’s not my favorite. I don’t tend to go outside the box, but Adam is a free spirit. He was just being himself. He liked it and thought it was fun. It’s an expression of his creativity.

Did all the media speculation about Adam’s sexuality (before he confirmed that he is gay) bother you?
It didn’t bother me at all because it’s who Adam is. He didn’t want his being gay to be the focus. He wanted to address it when the time was right.

You moved to Los Angeles from San Francisco to help Adam; what’s your role in his career now?
I’m so happy and thrilled to be a part of what’s going on, but I don’t have a huge role. I’m not managing him. I’ll give you an example of what I do. He called me late one night from rehearsal while he was recording the album. He needed a shirt for an appearance the next morning and asked me to iron one for him. That’s my role. I’m here for him when he needs me. I’m just his mom.

What’s your hope for your son?
To be surrounded by people who love him. That’s what I want for him more than anything—to enjoy life and be surrounded by love.

Ryan Seacrest Dishes On New Year’s Eve, ‘Idol’ Rumors

Filed Under () by Admin on

Posted at : Thursday, December 31, 2009

by Victor Balta

I talked this week with Seacrest and Larry Klein, the executive producer of ABC’s New Year’s Eve bash, about what makes this show so special, and the impact the 80-year-old Clark makes when he appears on screen. (The coverage from Times Square kicks off at 10 p.m. on ABC).

Seacrest also talked about the recent controversy around ‘Idol’ runner-up Adam Lambert, what’s in store for the show with new judge Ellen DeGeneres on the panel, and about all the speculation about the show’s future, including the reported departure of surly Simon Cowell.

Ryan, you literally stood next to Adam Lambert throughout his rise this year. What was your take on the “American Music Awards” thing and the fallout since?

RS: Well, the AMAs aren’t my show, so it’s probably a better question for Larry. He produced the AMAs. So it didn’t have anything to to with me. But I’ll tell you the one thing I did with Adam, which I think was simultaneously, was on my radio program we had a concert booked for Adam, Kris and Allison to the most pop city, based on votes to our web site. So while all of that (AMAs controversy) was happening and things were going on in the news and headlines, we’d already done a deal with him to put him on a stage somewhere in America, which we’ve just decided to do. So I’ve been working with him, but the AMAs were Larry’s show.

Larry?

LK: Well, yeah, we had Adam on the show and he did what he did, and we did rehearsals and what we did in rehearsals was not what was on the show that night. But it is what it is. He got caught up in the moment and went for it, and it was a big finale, so, I don’t know. It was his performance.

I’m not sure if it was confirmed that he would be on the New Year’s show or not, but…

LK: Well, no. We’d talked about it, and we were talking about it, but at that time, when I’m in middle of the AMAs, my head is in AMA mode. But, yeah, we were talking about it as one of the possibilities, but, other than that, no (he wasn’t confirmed). There’s no ill feelings, there’s no anything. I saw him a couple of weeks ago, we laughed, we joked. It is what it is.

Dick Clark always told me, years ago, the stage is for performance. Dick always said, I really don’t care what people do on stage, I care what they do off stage. Adam is a terrificly nice guy off stage, and that night he got caught up in his first big performance, and he went for it.

A decade of Idol-worthy albums

December 30, 2009
A decade of Idol-worthy albums
Mike Ruiz

American Idol has been serious business since it debuted in 2002 -- for the music industry and for fans. Favorites are ferociously defended, even if album sales don't always reflect the devotion.

That's why this list -- the 10 best albums from Idol singers of the past decade -- was tricky. I redid it a few times, left out a few initial inclusions (Daughtry, Fantasia) and ignored some commercial giants (namely Carrie Underwood, whose trio of discs boast killer singles but are weighed down with truly awful filler).

I avoided repeating artists, except for one unavoidable instance. You'll see soon enough. And it seems most of the better stuff was in the latter half of the decade.

Let the bickering commence!

1. All I Ever Wanted, Kelly Clarkson (2009): The original Idol's most recent album ran a close race with her second, Breakaway. But I chose this one because it's the culmination of Clarkson's three previous discs: a little R&B, a little rock, a little country and a consistently terrific listen. Every song sounds like a smash.

2. Breakaway, Kelly Clarkson (2004): How to not include Clarkson's true breakout, which was fueled by a string of fist-pumping singles, led by Since U Been Gone -- the best single from an Idol alum. Even with a few moments of filler, it's miles better than anything put out by Idol's long run of winners.

3. High Hopes & Heartbreak, Brooke White (2009): One of this year's sweetest surprises was this disc, as sunny and crisp as White's TV personality.

4. For Your Entertainment, Adam Lambert (2009): Love him, hate him, envy his hair. Lambert's disc is flashy, campy and fun -- and his fans love him for it.

5. Elliott Yamin, Elliott Yamin (2007): There's something immensely likable about Yamin, and he's also an effortless, soulful singer. That heartfelt single Wait For You became a radio hit was a wonderful surprise.

6. Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Hudson (2008): There was real elegance in several of these songs, including singles Spotlight, If This Isn't Love and Giving Myself. And that voice -- that glorious voice.

7. Heartbreak on Vinyl, Blake Lewis (2009): Lewis parted ways with Arista and released this adventurous, eclectic effort, which nicely showcased his electro-dance kookiness.

8. Just Like You, Allison Iraheta: (2009) Iraheta's debut disc was filled with all the major-label essentials for mass appeal. But it truly soared on her husky vocals, which put singers twice her age to shame.

9. Battlefield, Jordin Sparks (2009): The youngest Idol winner's previous disc turned her into a radio sweetheart. Battlefield refined her sound and showcased more maturity. But radio, if you can play repetitive dance trash from Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga, why not Sparks' vastly superior S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)?

10. One Love, Kimberley Locke (2004): Locke managed an easy balance of pop and soul on her first disc, which spawned several criminally catchy AC-radio hits.

Adam Lambert ruled 2009

Filed Under ( ) by Admin on

Posted at : Wednesday, December 30, 2009

This year has been a roller coaster ride for Adam Lambert. From his first audition on American Idol in January to his infamously risque AMA performance in November, Americans watched Lambert transform from an obscure theater performer to mainstream superstar before their eyes.

The extremely talented Lambert can wail like a hard rock banshee or sing slow, ethereal ballads that melt hearts. His voice is truly an amazing instrument. It's been a while since an artist of his unique caliber and vocal range came along. Adam is not just a singer, he's a performance artist with mass appeal, a feat never before accomplished by a male (Lady Gaga managed to be the first female to achieve the same distinction this year).

Adam had people tuning into Idol this year in record numbers, giving a much-needed shot in the arm to the aging show. Adam's popularity was based on his originality and versatility, and he continued to deliver amazing, goosebump-inducing performances week after week. Even before the competition was over, Adam was featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, which later named him Entertainer of the Year.

It came as a shock to many when folksy crooner Kris Allen ultimately won the competition, but it didn't stop Lambert from becoming the undisputed standout star of the summer Idols tour; in fact, he was the only Idol mobbed by autograph-seekers after every show. Newsday columnist Glenn Gamboa declared Lambert was the only Idol who was "ready for stardom now" back in August.

His legions of fans (known as "Glamberts") are fiercely loyal - they happily donated over $253,000 to public schools at Adam's request. Lambert told his fans to give to people in need instead of buying gifts for him, a show of generosity rarely observed in celebrities.

Following his stint on Idol, Adam has appeared on the covers of major magazines like Rolling Stone, Details, Out, and Billboard. He has been unabashedly outspoken about his sexuality and the fact that he doesn't want to be seen as some kind of gay role model. Adam told CBS's The Early Show cohost Maggie Rodriguez, "I'm not a babysitter, I'm a performer" following his AMA performance that landed him on ABC/Disney's sh-t list. The network canceled two scheduled live appearances by Lambert (CBS scooped him up right away), but tried to make nice by airing pre-taped appearances on The View and Barbara Walter's Most Fascinating People of the Year special.

His hotly anticipated major-label album, For Your Entertainment, made an impressive #3 debut in November on the Billboard 200. His second single from the album, "Whataya Want From Me," co-penned by Pink, has just been released.

So what does 2010 hold for Adam Lambert? Expect more great music, more fun, and more controversy. Adam wouldn't have it any other way. After all, he's here for our entertainment.

Journalist reflecting on the first time she covered Adam Lambert

Filed Under ( ) by Admin on

Posted at : Wednesday, December 30, 2009

BACKSTAGE: Reflections on a year (and a career) covering the arts

...Over the past 12 years, I've reviewed more than a thousand theater and opera productions. I can't name a favorite, but I can count on just two hands the performances at which I knew I was witnessing something extraordinary. One of those occurred at Vista's Moonlight Amphitheatre in the September 2000 production of "Grease," where the crystalline, powerful tenor voice of a husky, freckle-faced, bushy-haired teen tenor from Mt. Carmel High School literally caused the hairs on my arms to stand on end. I was surprised to hear a voice with such unforced power, control and beauty coming out of such a young man.

At intermission, I tracked down Moonlight's artistic director Kathy Brombacher and asked,"Who is that kid with the amazing voice?" And in my review that night, I wrote about how this young singer from Rancho Penasquitos was the show's "big surprise" for his "lovely and powerful" voice, and how "we're sure to see more of him in the future."

And we have. It just took nine years.

That singer was Adam Lambert, who in 2009 went from unknown L.A. theater chorus boy to global pop icon on television's "American Idol."

The morning after the "American Idol" finale last May (when the flamboyant Lambert lost in a stunning upset to bland-but-likable Kris Allen), the show's producers set up a conference call where music journalists could call in to a round-robin interview and take turns asking Lambert one question each. I dialed in late and ended up 43rd on a list of 45 reporters (including writers from Rolling Stone Magazine, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, Us Weekly and many other major outlets). Each of the questions I'd prepared in advance was plucked off one by one by the reporters in line ahead of me, so by the time my turn finally arrived, I was nervously scrambling to devise a question that didn't sound repetitive or stupid among such august company.

Then, as the interview moderator called my name, "Pam Kragen from the North County Times," the polite but measured tone of Lambert's voice changed into a cheery shout-out: "PAM KRAGEN? PAM KRAGEN? I know Pam Kragen! That's a name from my past!" I was elated. After rather unprofessionally gushing to him (and the 44 other journalists) about how proud we all are of him here in North County, I babbled some question I don't remember and then basked in the glow of his recognition.

Turns out I'd given Lambert one of his first professional reviews and ---- as many actors have told me over the years ---- a few positive (or negative) words in the newspaper are something an actor never forgets, no matter how much time passes or how famous they may become some day. ...

Adam Lambert on the Backlot

Let’s make sure we have this straight now…

- Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta will perform on Billboard’s New Year’s Eve Live on Fox from 11 p.m. Thursday to 12:30 a.m. Friday.

- Carrie Underwood, Daughtry and others will be featured on ABC’s special “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” show.

So, where does that leave Adam Lambert?

Lambert, will perform at something called the GRIDLOCK New Year’s Eve event at the Paramount Pictures Studio Backlot in L.A.

It’s an event that benefits the American Red Cross. Lambert will be the headliner and perform a 40-minute set before a crowd of 5,000.

So, did his performance this fall at the American Music Awards hurt or even hinder his career?

You can be the judge of that. But here is what Allen and Iraheta said in a recent conference call to promote their New Year’s gig in Las Vegas.

When asked if they were surprised about the headlines Lambert made after the AMA show…

Iraheta: “No, I don’t think anyone should be surprised, really.”

Allen: “No, not at all. Anybody that knows him (Lambert) is not surprised at all.”

When asked if they thought his antics hurt his career…

Allen: “Obviously it hasn’t hurt him.”

Iraheta: “Yes, I was going to say the exact same thing.”

OK, let’s do the math here…

Millions will watch Underwood and Daughtry on ABC; a few million others will tune in to see Allen and Iraheta on FOX; 5,000 will buy $150 tickets to see Lambert live.

Other bands performing with Lambert include Kevin Rudolf, Wonderland, Qwes, Dakota Lamas, Far East Movement … yawn!

Wake me when it’s 2010….

Adam is way too talented to be on the Backlot stage at Paramount Thursday night. His voice, his creative genius far outweigh his apparent joy of shock value and he has had a “career chat” with himself. Idol Chatter, for one, doesn’t want him on the Backlot the remainder of his career.

Sorry, Paramount, it’s a wonderful setting, but it’s not Times Square or The Strip.

Sorry, Kris & Allison, but, yes, Lambert did put at least a roadblock in his career at the AMA show.

Adam’s one of the editor’s picks for 2010 in Elle Japan. The others are Miley Cyrus and GaGa.

Adam's popularity in Japan is rising at a very fast rate. I hope he does a commercial there someday. A lot of western celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt etc make a lot of money starring in Japanese commercials!

Great Feuds Of 2009: Adam Lambert vs. ABC

Adam Lambert vs. ABC
After Adam Lambert hit the American Music Awards stage for an over-the-top performance of "For Your Entertainment," ABC was anything but entertained. The "American Idol" runner-up didn't feel the need to apologize for his risqué performance, and ABC canceled several of his planned appearances on the channel. When he did eventually make it back on the network, he wasn't allowed to go live: His "View" appearance was pre-taped.

Japan: Adam Lambert is the star to watch in music in 2010

Japanese Biglobe Internet Service Provider names Adam 1 of 5 stars to watch in music. Adam is the only foreign artist on their list.

I have been told that Adam's album is selling very well for an imported album. That is probably why the Japanese experts see a big potential for Adam next year. They will officially release a Japanese Version of the album on March 2010. That version will include extra songs such as "Down the Rabbit Hole" and "No Boundaries".
