Billboard singles reviews: Adam Lambert "Whatya Want From Me"

ARTIST: ADAM LAMBERT

SINGLE: WHATAYA WANT FROM ME (19/RCA Records)

If Adam Lambert's American Music Awards performance of "For Your Entertainment" proved anything, it was that as an album lead-in, the woozy dance track wasn't going to cut it. Enter "Whataya Want From Me," the glam popster's expedited second single that benefits greatly from subtlety. Lambert keeps his vocals understated, singing over a simple guitar strum and drumbeat that soon develop into a swooping chorus with just the right amount of new wave-esque production. "It's me, I'm a freak/But thanks for lovin' me, 'cause you're doing it perfectly," Lambert sings, delivering lyrics that one can easily imagine co-writer Pink performing. He owns the message, though, imbuing each line with new resonance. If Lambert strikes this balance between flair and substance more often, he might just live up to the hype.

I happen to love FYE and think it's dance beat is addicting. The reviewer here obviously didn't like Adam's AMA performance, but that has nothing to do with the song and the vocals. What a strange review from Billboard!! I thought it was about the music, not a single performance. The FYE video is amazing--beyond great. I can watch it over and over. Love WWFM as well, but IMHO, it's not as catchy as FYE, Sure Fire Winners, Strut, Music Again or If I Had You. Maybe someone else can clarify what the negative review of FYE as a song and video independent of AMA.

I'd already fallen in love with FYE before the deaded AMA performance, but probably most other people hadn't. Not up to Adam's usual standards, the performance was a mess, sloppy, off key, angry looking, and trashy. As a result, FYE never had a chance. It died before it ever got going. Not because of the song, but because of the performance. The reviewer should review his review.

Who knows, if this AMA thing ever goes away, FYE might make a comeback. Hope so.

there's nothing wrong with FYE, it is a good song that you feel like dancing, i play it a lot in my ipod when i am doing my work out. it gives me an energy and motivation. WWFM though is a type of song that shows the clarity and powerful vocal of adam.

Woozy? Are we listening to the same song? It is hot, catchy and inspiring! I listen to it when I need a pick-me-up!

People, lets face it, FYE is risque and is not for everyone, let alone Adam's shocking display at the AMA's. Stop defending it and expect more of WWFM kind of songs from his album so that Adam can reach his potential as the superstar with a long standing career, which he truly deserves. Enough said!

Oh , He is living up to the hype. He is up against homophobia and a profession which is dominated by Divas. Look at the top 100. The musical talent he shows in his album is magnificent. If you have any doubts. Go watch You Tube of Gridlock performance!!

I loved FYE immediately when I heard it and the video is out of this world. I am hoping the video of WWFM comes out this week. I love all the songs on Adam's album and I am counting on some songs to be number one hits very soon. Go ADAM!!

South Africans obviously disagree! FYE (song not album)made it's debut on the Top40SA chart at #28, and then jumped to #17 before the chart closed for last year. It re-opened today and FYE jumped 10 places to #7. This chart is based solely on listener's votes. The chart is broadcast on 2 of the biggest regional stations in the country : KFM (Cape Town) and Highveld (greater Johannesburg) :))))

Why are we talking about FYE when the review is for WWFM?!?!?!?
I'm sorry but focus on the topic it is on. He said the dance beat was epoxy, that's his opinion.
He was giving WWFM a pretty great review, so try focusing on that, hmmm?

Adam has to be Hercules to break the American homophobic glass ceiling, but he's doing it,one crack at a time. Adam is awesome in all ways and will be an international star, then the homophobes will be crowing about how they discovered Adam's greatness.

WWFM is more radio friendly than FYE. I hope Adam doesn't try to keep going in the music direction that FYE goes. It sounds too much like Brittany Spears crap. I hope that is not his goal - to be the male version of slut. He's much too talented for that.

While I love all the songs on Adam's CD and am a huge fan, I get where the critic is coming from and I agree that FYE should not have been the lead off single. A person can be a fan without taking offense any time someone doesn't fall in line with the "Adam can do no wrong," fanaticism. He's learning. He has said that. My biggest criticism of the whole CD is the over production which nearly drowns his beautiful voice out to some extent. Not sure if that is really his fault. That's how producers work these days, probably because they are used to working with much less accomplished vocalists. They did the same thing with much of Allison's CD too. His next CD will not be as hurried and I hope will be produced differently.

Anon #14, I agree completely. The fan "fanaticism" you are talking about is ridiculous. I think it actually might hurt Adam. I am a huge fan of his, but I still think he has made or his management has made some strange career decisions. If Adam is strictly an artist who doesn't care what the public thinks - only HIS artistic vision is important - well, that's ok...if he has a good day job. But, if he wants this to be his way of making a living, then he has to cater to the mainstream somewhat. And, I'm sorry, but the mainstream isn't ready for the Zodiac Show in their living rooms during prime time. A lot of artists throughout history have not cared what public perception is of their art. That's where the term "starving artist" came from.

I think the FYE is the weakest song in the entire CD. I don't know why RCA/19 keeps pushing that single. There are other tracks that are so much better. I really feel that soaked should be released AS A single ,it's totally beautiful.Susan Boyle's cd relies are her voice , and on proven successful songs .THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE WHO CAN'T STAND RAP OR THE INANE MUSIC OF TODAY, ENJOY. IT'S NO WONDER HER SALES ARE THROUGH THE ROOF. THE PUBLIC IS SAYING SOMETHING TO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. ADAM HAS A GREAT VOICE ,BETTER VOCALS THAN SUBO AND MANY OF THE FANS LOVE HIS BALLADS AND DON'T CARE FOR THE POP STUFF.

I like both the ballads and the rock/dance songs. As I stated, I am just not impressed with the way they were produced. As for Susan Boyle, she would be the last artist I would buy. I find her collection simply karaoke, all sung in exactly the same way. She's not a vocal stylist. Boring, boring. I'd even buy Kris Allen's CD before I'd buy hers.
