SCRANTON -- When it comes to fame in the 21st century, few vehicles are better at launching a career than “American Idol.”

The TV talent contest show’s popularity is such that its runners-up receive as much notoriety as the winners determined by viewer vote at the end of each season.

“Idol” season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert, who Friday night is launching a national tour Friday night with a concert a Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre Township, stopped by The Mall at Steamtown on Wednesday for a meet-and-greet session. He offered 100 contest winners individual-photo opportunities, as well as signed copies of his latest album, “For Your Entertainment.”

Winners were selected via an enter-to-win contest at the mall Saturday afternoon, said Arthur Levandoski, the mall’s director of marketing.

“We’re kicking off our tour here because it’s so great here … we love it,” Lambert, 28, said. “It’s a great place to start in the Northeast. We were here with the ‘Idol’ tours, which was great, and we thought we would relax here for a few days with the tour while we got things ready.”

After a brief media interview period, Lambert met each member of the crowd, which included fans who spanned the age spectrum. While many were teens, others were members of older demographics who have been following Lambert since his appearances on the popular TV talent show.

“I can’t even stand it waiting here like this,” said Debbie English, 50, a Scranton resident who was there along with her best friend, Linda Ciuccio, 46, of Old Forge. “We stayed up until 2 a.m. voting for him when he was on the show.”

“We’re still trying to win tickets to his show, but even if that doesn’t happen, this is absolutely amazing to be at,” English said.

During his interview, Lambert addressed concerns that his upcoming show would contain elements that some critics may not view as appropriate for children and young adults. The concerns came after Lambert was criticized in the aftermath of his November performance at the American Music Awards that had elements some felt were inappropriate for family viewing.

“This tour is very family-friendly. … It doesn’t go to the level that the AMA performance went to, if anyone is worried about that,” Lambert said about his upcoming tour. “I learned a lot from the AMA performance, and I stand by it, but I learned a lot about what my fan base wants.”

“I would say that if you thought that was untactful, then this performance is tasteful. This performance is a little more serious. Visually, we’re setting it off as a turn-of-the-century meets modern rock-and-roll type of setting.”

Also appearing with Lambert on his tour will be Australian guitarist Orianthi, who appeared at a meet-and-greet segment earlier in the day at The Mall at Steamtown.

Hope he's not too family friendly! When I first started reading this latest round of press, I still trusted him, knew he would still be bringing the sexy... but IDK, it is indeed such a great thing that all these teens are jumping on board... I suppose it's very wise for him to keep that in mind... but my selfish side (grown adult here!!) wants the NO-SUBTLETY-NEEDED sexy :). I do think his sensuality (vs. more overt sexiness) is enough for his show...just being selfish I guess, LOL. Seeing two shows, can't wait to hear that amazing voice live in my ears, that's thrill enough I guess :).

Above me, don't worry. Adam said it's going to be sexy. The kid can't help it. He oozes sex appeal. Plz don't worry. You will get what you asking for!
I trust Adam to give us a show we will never forget.
Probably some of us are going to say his name while asleep lol

So true Anon @ 6:07 - I had forgotten about that - the fact that he can't even help it anyway!! :). In fact, sometimes when I go back and look at the Idol performances, taking into consideration what we all know now, you can almost see him struggling with keeping the hips in check and that sort of thing...funny.
