Adam Lambert On Gay Kiss: I Don't Represent The Community

In discussing his controversial American Music Awards performance, pop singer Adam Lambert says he doesn't represent the gay and lesbian community.

Lambert's much-ballyhooed performance during the awards show grabbed international headlines for its inclusion of a gay kiss and some man-on-man simulated oral sex.

The 28-year-old American Idol season 8 runner-up came out gay last year on the cover of Rolling Stone.

“I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay,” he said.

In a cover story for southern California gay biweekly Frontiers, Lambert says he's thrilled with his gay fans, but rejects the notion that he represents the gay community.

“There were some more conservative gays that were like, 'You shouldn't be doing that. You're painting us in a bad light, making us look trashy,'” Lambert told Stephen Horbelt.

“And I remember thinking to myself, as proud as I am to be a member of the gay and lesbian community, it's not my job to paint a picture of the community. I'm only responsible for painting a picture of who I am as an individual. It was a confusing time, because as proud as I am, I'm not here to represent a group. I'm here to be an artist.”

“Luckily, people were supportive and it blew over,” he added.

Nothing about this guy really "blows over" and that's why we LOOOOOOOOOVE him!! Everything he does is part of the total person who is just jaw-dropping amazing!!

You said it like it is, Adam. I love you for who u r?
Keep up the good work.

I LOVE that Adam never apologized for the AMA performance-which he shouldn't have. He has, however realized that while America is apparently okay with Mylie Cyrus working a stripper pole, men kissing men is sadly too much for the hypocritcal prudes that always make the biggest fuss.

What cheeses me off is the deafening silence and/or snarking from the gay communtity instead of protecting one of their own. Adam is not like Ellen or Neil Patrick Harris, gays who are comfortable and cuddly to the general public-Adam is sexy and outrageous and he again doesn't apologize for who he is. Isn't that what it is all about and what the gay community has been fighting for? The freedom to be yourself?

I know, the lack of support from gays is suprising and disturbing, sooooo sad

I'm kind of disappointed that the gays don't support Adam as much as they support Gaga etc...

FYE should have been a huge hit with the gays.

Gay people are stuck up too. They don't want to embrace Adam for fear of being "too" gay. What is that anyway? What is "too" gay? Adam is beautiful and hot!!I know I would LOVE to embrace him-for at least an hour!!! Maybe two!!

Why are you re-printing this old shit about the AMA's? Adam is WAY over it, his true fans are WAY over it, so maybe if we just ignore publication after publication they will stop asking Adam questions about this F**king OLLLLLLD NEWWWWWS. Lets let it fade into a famous piece of pop culture history. I swear, Adam has the patience of Job...I don't know how he does it. I guess because he is a professional.

Queertry JUST WITHIN hours ran a negative piece on Lambert - asses! I'll find the link and come back and post it.

Christina A.'s MTV Movie Award performance very racy and I believe simulated oral sex... no uproar, maddening.

and also - just saw this link on twitter:

MsKristina_‎: All @adamlambert fans - e-mail request for IIHY -- Myrequests@my1061.com -- My106.1 confirmed everyone can request
Twitter - seconds ago

haven't investigated it yet, rushing right now, gotta go, but anything to help IIHY get airplay I'm all for.

"Now look at Sandra Bullock and Miley they have created news with their kiss on stage, double standard Adam"

I think Adam was headline news all over the world after the AMAs. He was on Google's first headline news for two weeks. I remember that.

But Adam was the only one who suffer consequences (getting cancelled etc) which was totally unfair.

Ummm I'm GAY and I love Adam. I don't know about the others but Adam's music is great.

But I agree with Adam. Why should he have to represent the gay community. He should represent himself. He's responsible for himself, not an entire gay community. This is why so many celebs dont' want to come out. Right after they come out, they are forced to represent the whole community, which I think is absurd. Straight celebs dont' have to represent straight people.

Well said Ken @ 1:01pm - hope you come and play with us more on this blog. :)

This is not old news. This was posted today. The magazine that he did an interview with happened like a week ago. So this is fresh news.

"gay" or "too gay", when this is mentioned, the subject is already biased. Adam is highly respected by lots of people for what he's done - to be himeself, naturally. Other singers now use the "gay factor" just to get attention and people are falling into pitfall. What a society!!

Enough already. Practically every awards show or music video now has a same sex kiss, simulated sex acts, bondage, all kinds of gyrations, etc. No originality in any of this. All it seems to do is grab attention for the moment, and then it's on to the next one. Where is the talent, the voice, the music...the creativity. Most of these so-called singers can't even do a live performance and must lip-sync the song with dancers distracting in their gyrations and movements. It doesn't matter one bit that Adam Lambert is gay. He has a voice, is so talented and articulate and on his way to rock star super stardom.

I think Queerty started a controversy because it wanted hits on the blog. LOTS of intelligent, supportive posts for our boy though. Sort of makes me think that some peole are starting to get Adam's universal aceptance message ??????

I agree that the AMA thing is old news. But Adam's lack of support from the gay community isn't, and I find it deeply troubling. Don't like his music or performances-fine. But it ticks me off to no end how little credit Adam gets for his very real courage. Being out and in the public eye attracts all kinds of ugliness and homophobia. That Adam not only has to put up with that BS, but ALSO crap from the queer community is sickening. I wish someone could explain to me why.

This will probably earn me some boos, but if I was going to hazard a guess is that it's because some folks in the gay community hate that Adam has so many straight female fans. Otherwise, I'm baffled by the attitude.

Well said, Ken. Glad you joined us with your logical opinion.Wish the media and sensitive gays would just chill and enjoy this beautiful, talented man and let him do his thing without constantly picking him apart. It's really tiresome and petty. funbunn40

Good point 2:43 on 6/8 - maybe we shouldn't go to the article anymore... you're probably right - just looking for hits... but I have to say, I found their position maddening!

But hey, you know what is the opposite of maddening - WWFM was #1 on Ryan Seacrest's American Top 5 today - Yay!!! Heard it in the car, was so psyched. All publicity is good. And the way I feel about the American Top 5 is that, we are so often at the mercy of the radio stations, and this is one arena in which we can vote, so I try to vote as much as I can for this (just refresh page for multiple voting) when I have time... one little way that I can try to force radio play of at least one Lambert song... and maybe if WWFM continues to get good airplay it will climb a bit more in HOT AC and maybe even Adult Top 40 before it slopes back downward.

i like your style adam, keep it up, there are so many straight men and women(especially) who will continue to support you. the the gays and lesbians support gaga and the rest. we will not abandon you.

Can't people forget the gay thing and focus on the singing for Christ's sake?
This is getting boring.

This is not new, it is old news, just maybe reprinted in some magazine...just sayin.

Wonder if Gaga's 'new' video is going to get airplay without being 'MODIFIED'. Can you say MORAL MAJORITY? Better TAKE COVER! FYE was TAME in comparison & they YANKED it off the air before it had a chance to get any type of exposure. Here's where the double standard really comes into play, folks!

I loved the fact Adam never faltered and felt he had to apologise for the AMAs......because he certainly did't need to at all! Double standards are totally ridiculous and have to go! Time to get a life and keep moving on.
