Being genuine is most important as Adam Lambert prefers his fans polite and understanding.

GLAM pop rock star Adam Lambert, one of the headlining acts performing at the Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix later this month, loves the revving of fast cars.

Lambert is also due to play a concert at Putra Indoor Stadium, Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 14.

“I’ve been driving a Ford Mus­­tang. But I’m kind of in the market to buy something else when I get back home at the end of the year, buy myself a birthday present. Something a little flashier, maybe like an Audi or a Maserati,” he says over the phone from Oklahoma City where he was on tour.

The 28-year-old made headlines last year as a hotly tipped contestant on television reality show American Idol who lost in the final to Kris Allen.

Still, the flashy Californian native with the multi-octave-range voice did well enough with his debut album, For Your Entertainment, which debuted at No.3 on the Billboard charts when it was released late last year.

All the fans want a piece of you. Do you ever get tired of the screams and all the attention?

I don’t get tired of it but at times I need to be away from it for my own sanity. You know, a normal person can take only so much of that. It’s very flattering but it can be too flattering at times. It’s very important for me to stay humble and for me to stay grounded and so, at some point, I have to get away from that.

What is the surest way for a fan to get your attention?

I think being polite, being understanding and being genuine is important. If I see somebody who is truly just showing love and appreciation, I recognise that, it’s really beautiful. There is a big difference between a fan who is genuinely showing appreciation and a fan who needs something from you for his own validation. It’s a fine line.

Do you read what people are saying about you on Twitter, in blogs and in online forums?

I definitely follow Twitter, I like to scan things people are saying and I definitely take note of what the fans are enjoying and what they respond to. It’s really important, like market research. It’s important for me to know what my fans want to hear and how they want to be entertained. I receive fan mail from time to time but I don’t really check out message boards on websites too often, though.

How much control do you have over your looks and what you wear?

I am fortunate enough to work with a stylist, Trish Summerville, and she is excellent but it is definitely a team effort. I have a lot of ideas, and she and I came up with a bunch of different looks. Ultimately, I have total control over what I wear. I make the final call, so that’s nice.

I love fashion and playing dress-up, and she brought a lot of amazing ideas to the table. I also have a big part in dressing the dancers as well as the band.

Do you think that your career would have been any different if you had won American Idol?

I think that it would be pretty much the same thing. The whole point of American Idol was not, in my opinion, necessarily winning first or second or third place, it’s just to get yourself out there and that’s what it did for me. People don’t realise we get the same type of deal, with the same type of producers and record labels, whether you’re the winner or the runner-up; it’s kind of the same situation.

Some people are saying that this year’s American Idol has not been very exciting compared to past seasons. Do you agree?

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but I think the type of talent in this year’s season was more of an organic, singer-songwriter talent which is different, as the show was often filled with show-stoppers and theatrics. So it might not seem as exciting but there was definitely a lot of musicality. – The Straits Times, Singapore/Asia News Network.
