KUALA LUMPUR: American Idol star Adam Lambert rocked a full-house at his concert at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil last night, drowning out a demonstration outside led by PAS against his performance.

The 28-year-old American Idol 2009 runner-up who is openly gay, kept his word of providing “lots of glitter and leather” in his feather and gothic-themed ensembles at the highly-charged show that sent over 10,000 fans screaming with excitement.

Lambert, who has been on his worldwide Glam Nation tour since June, thrilled with hits such as For Your Entertainment, Whataya Want From Me and If I Had You for 90 minutes.

The glam-rocker, who created a stir by kissing his bassist Tommy Joe Ratliff at his recent Tokyo concert, honoured his pledge to obey local rules that forbade him from repeating such acts.

Earlier outside the stadium, a large group comprising PAS Youth members and students representing Gamis (All-Malaysian Islamic Students Coalition) protested against Lambert’s performance, shouting and carrying placards.

They were led by PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan and PAS Youth exco member Mohd Firdaus Jaafar, who is also the Jerai MP. Earlier in the week, PAS had objected to the performance claiming that Lambert’s shows advocated homosexuality.

The group had gathered at the entrance after performing maghrib prayers and passed anti-Lambert flyers to those queuing to buy tickets.

They were blocked by the police from entering the venue but about 12 protesters were allowed in to distribute the flyers depicting Lambert as “wild, lewd and ex-treme.” The protest fizzled out by 8.30pm.

Sales manager Ivan Oh, 29, who attended the concert with two of his friends, brushed off the protests, saying there was nothing wrong in Lambert performing here.

“It is his music that we appreciate and nothing more. His personal traits should not be taken into account,’’ he added.

Student Vivian Lee, 19, said she was saddened that people were prepared to exploit the universal appeal of music for political purposes.

Evie Gomez, 18, said she was fascinated by Lambert’s performance and was glad that she got to see “my idol live.”

Adam handled this whole uproar with intelligence and grace. Such a class act. By making a small compromise that has nothing to do with his music anyway, he has achieved a legion of many new fans that would have been so disappointed if he had cancelled that concert. For those that weren't sure what he was about and saw him for the first time, I'm sure they were blown away and pleasantly surprised by an amazing performance by all. His pure intelligence is such a turn on! funbunn40

Very well said, funbunn40 :)
Btw, about the kiss, I heard that he didn't kiss Tommy because it was forbidden to do so. But he still blew the kiss to Tommy. LOL. I just LOVE that smart rebellion side of him :D

God, how I love Adam for who he is...he is so self-assured. I love how he down-played everything, and even scoffed a bit about how ridiculous this all was - but not in a condescending way. He is so brilliant.

And SO SEXY - OMG!!!! Even all covered up! Look at that glossy black hair and those long legs! And his saucy eyeliner. And those lips. And I love how he snaps into "camera mode" when the cameras start popping! Did you notice that in the HK press conference, when he put on the jacket they gave him as a gift? The reporters started taking pix and he just snapped into "sexy Adam pose".

Oh jeez, ok, got ahold of myself again. Sorry for that little outburst. It's like I black out for a second and my fingers just keep typing...then I come to and, wow!, did I really say that out loud?? This man just kills me.

I'll bet those flyers showing Adam "wild, lewd and extreme" went like hotcakes and are going to be collector's items in the near future.

lol

@venz1 : He didn't blow the kiss to Tommy but at us, the audience and the roaring crowd! How cool is that?

@Anon 11.20pm : Uh-oh, I'm gonna put up my flyer on eBay soon! lol

MGF - I'll just throw this in here, rather than searching back for your post...that video of the Texas councilman moved me to tears!!! Thank you so much for bringing it to our attention. I just posted it to my FB site.

What a sad world we live in, and what a strong man Joel Burns is!!

Yep....All true!!!

Great review! But all other accounts of the show state that there were 16,000 + fans in the stadium. And from the pics and videos taken that night, 16,000 sure looks like that good number.

Be happy when Adam is out of Malaysia, makes me nervous to think he could be hurt,Luv YA

It's strange, because I think Adam is doing his own protest by kissing Tommy on stage. I don't know what that has to do with being gay? Adam could be straight and still kiss Tommy on stage just for the show.

Whoever stated above that those protest posters were going to be hot collectibles, probably is right on. They were handing out fliers to people going into concert. Bet most didn't realize what they had until later on. Adam fix you are in good company. BTW he has that sexy, come hither look down pat.

What is the prominant language spoken in Malaysia? Which others too? Adamluv

Anonymous said...

AdamLuv : Our national language is Bahasa Melayu/ Malay (my mother tongue) but most of us can speak and write in English pretty well. And being a multi-cultural country, we also Mandarin, Tamil, Urdu, Cantonese, Hokkien just to mention a few and that doesn't include the different dialects! I was at GNT KL and I saw all the lovely people of Malaysia (and some probably from overseas too!) coming together to see the golden boy in action! It was an awesome experience! :)

Great comments all, I agree!

Funbunn40, Adamfix -- ditto on the fun stuff.
Adam is such a gift, look at how beautifully he handled all this adversity. Smiling, positive, & respectful while also whity and charming... and of course, beautiful to look and & he just can't help it, sexy as hell.

Malaysian fan, thank you for your articulate information, so interesting. I didn't realize it was so multi-cultural there. Glad Adam was able to perform in your country and you got to experience The Golden Boy and Voice in action.

Daydreamin', thanks for putting up the link for People's choice!
Let's all help Adam achieve his dream of a solid place in the music industry. Vote, & leave positive comments too =)

Malaysian fan, thank you for answering my question. Love to know about other languages/customs! Only languages you mentioned that I'm not familiar with are your mother tonque and Hokkien. Learned something new! The message from Dadbert is TOO funny but what is the Frodo in reference to? That man is very astute! Adamluv

Love the Lambertspeak. This family's got it all--looks, intelligence, commitment to each other. My interpretation of tweet, plane just landed in Malaysia, a country still steeped in 12th century traditions. Frodo perhaps something Freudian, but probably not that deep. If they wanted us to understand, they wouldn't use their own code, which I think is pretty smart. This is a very slow day--nothing going on.

The Dark Side:

Land of Frodo = New Zealand. JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed there. Frodo Baggins (played by Elijah Wood) is one of the hobbits from the Fellowship of the Rings in their journey to Mordor to destroy the One Ring.

ps: 12th Century? Not cool, Adam's dad. :(

Oh, another review from the same paper, weekend edition:

http://ecentral.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/10/17/soundnstage/7235981&sec=soundnstage

"His voice was a magnificent instrument – pure, operatically-strong and resonant – and his performances exuded more drama than a Spanish soap opera, but the back-to-back ballads that followed, including (sic) Soaken, Broken Open and Aftermath, lost the show some energy. The crowd’s general unfamiliarity with the numbers did not help either."

WTH? Any Glambert knows that they're supposed to be quite and enjoy Adam's vocals during the slower numbers like SOAKED (get that right, writer!). Bah!
