From the battle of the divas to an image-challenged David Cook to the sure thing that was Adam Lambert, 'Idol's' resident vocal coach runs down the highs and lows of America's favorite show.
THR: The season 9 contestants have taken quite a beating in the press these last few months and haven’t really been able to relish in the post-season glory of Idol. Do you feel bad for them?
Byrd: I think I felt badly for them when they were in the season. [laughs] The thing is, they weren't the only season that people said sucked. There are highs and lows to everything. But let me say this: It's hard to follow the season of Adam Lambert. Like, what do you do next? Do you set yourself on fire? However, my other theory is, if Adam Lambert had been in season one, he would not have survived. Because we weren't looking for that in season one. The show was so new, he wouldn’t have made it.

They weren't looking for talented charismatic singers back then?
what were they looking for then...stupid statement...
Yeah. Interesting statement...that Adam wouldn't have survived season one. He wouldn't have survived the auditions? I am certain votes by the audience would have carried him through just the same as in season 8. huh. interesting comment.
"What do you do next? Do you set yourself on fire?" LOL True. Tough to follow Adam.
THAT IS A STUPID STATEMENT
She's right about how do you follow or top the season after Adam Lambert but I completely dis-agree with her about Adam would have not survived in season one. How did she come up with this conclusion? Isn't AI a TALENT show? And Adam has enormous talent & it wasn't for her/them to decide it's the the public voters or IS IT Ms. Byrd?‼ Why is she making comments & conclusions like this without anything to back it up... makes her looks like a fool.
Adam Lambert is an impossibe act to follow. I thought this from the beginning of Season 9. What more could anyone want to see other than a weekly Adam fix? In fact, there is little entertainment out there that excites me after watching Adam. I prefer to go to 24/7, Adam on YouTube, etc. than watch most TV shows ever since I saw Adam on Season 8.

I just think she means they were looking for cookie cutter singers from a small town kind of people season one blank slates that was kind of the mode it was in then it changed from that to a relevent recording artist.
Of course, no one could ever follow Adam Lambert - his talent is too humongous! However, not looking for Adam Lambert in Season One? What - no talent required. Poor choice of words. She should have left that statement out. Everyone with ears would have voted for Adam. His talent, charisma, charm, looks, etc. would earns mega votes as he did in Season Eight. Adam would have definitely made the cut! DUH!!!!!!!!!!
She blew the interview as far as I'm concerned!
Forever Adam Fan,

I was a lil annoyed at her statement, but after thinking about it.. There's a great deal of truth in what she says.
The first season's focus was on putting AI on the entertainment map. Think back... all the S1 finalists were apple-pie, kid-next-door types. I believe she's right... Adam would NOT have made the final cut... Where would the producers have gone from there??? Let's face it, Adam is an impossible act for an unknown to follow, as proof I offer Exhibit Season 9. LOL!!!!

And Adam was the only American Idol finalist who came back as a mentor
I am sure that he would not have made it past the audition stage in Season 1. They were all about image and Adam did not fit the image, simple. It's not that deep, it called don't bother if you are wearing any eyeliner or have any Broadway musical experience. There wasn't anything idealistic about TV ten years ago. Actually, I think, in part, Adam was somewhat responsible for the new realism in TV today.
Hmmmm. Considering the major suckage that was season 9, perhaps Debra shouldn't survive! Lol
I think what she meant by her statement was that most of the season 1 contestants were amature singers. Kids with no or little experience. Remember Simon was paid $45k for the 1st season. They didn't know if the show make it. contestants for season 1 went through one audition in parking lots of couple cities. They started accepting contestants with more professional experience in following seasons. Probably Daughtry even wouldn't have made it in season 1. She should've named more contestants instead of only Adam. But she said an obvious fact that Adam set the bar so high that it's really hard for other contestants to follow his act. Just note how much changes they are making for the upcoming season to make it more exciting for people to watch. Will it happen? I guess we'll find out next week!
even this lady can't get s8 with Adam lambert out of her head. s8 was unforgettable! Adam Lambert topped it all with a cherry. haven't watched AI since, well, I watched his mentoring show , hmm, he was the only idol to come back as a mentor, for Elvis week, what a compliment!!
If the grammy show wants this to be a special show, Adam Lambert will win!!
Season of Adam Lambert???? AWWWWWW... And some called it "The Adam Lambert Show" :)

To first 4 posters:
She actually made a solid point with that statement. Originally AI were looking for a regular guy/gal and transform him/her in to a star. Adam was already a star when he hit the show. He just needed a platform to get him out there. I think the producers initially casted Adam in hopes to fit the agenda of "Good" Vs "Evil", the former being Gokey and the later Adam (I have no fuckin idea how they thought of Adam as Dark and Evil but that was the plan from what I understand)but Adam turned out to be the game changer right from the begining by surprising the whole crew, including the guest mentors, let alone the audiences watching from all over the world. I remember on the finale how Paula said something about How Adam has done so much for the show that particular season and we all agree, he did save the show that season. Although he broke the show the moment he lost and the moment he embarked on his solo career. Not that I care about the Idol show but it is a fact that Idol lost credibility at the moment. And I don't believe any change will save that show.

@zz I agree that Idol lost credibility when Adam didn't win. Show will not survive unless they find another Adam Lambert and there is only one of him in this world. Love you Adam.
It's funny how we all read into her comments. Meeting her at Adam's show in Costa Mesa last summer, she clearly adores Adam and thinks he is amazing. Heck, she came down to Orange County just to see him perform! Another thing that became clear as we talked is that she is very involved in the early audition process. They were in the midst of it at the time we met her (late July). Based on that fact, all she was saying is they cast the show differently back then and wouldn't have considered someone with Adam's talents, strengths and background.
Thanks to all the posts that somehow made me understand where she is coming from. Adam is in a league of his own and indeed is such a tough act to follow setting the bar too high as has been said already. So i need not take the statement negatively :-)
