Linda Perry Talks 'Adam Lambert' In New Interview

Filed Under ( ) by Admin on Friday, April 1, 2011

QUESTION: I know you wrote and produced for Adam Lambert with “A Loaded Smile” for his album. He’s one of the first mainstream pop singers to be out at the very start of his career. Do you think pop musicians need to worry about staying closeted the way actors do?

LINDA PERRY: Hmmm… I still don’t understand that. That’s a whole other interview! I honestly am still baffled by the closet thing. I don’t get it. There’s nothing you can tell me that would make me understand why people feel the need to hide who they are – under any circumstance. So, I can’t comprehend it therefore I can’t even answer it.

Adam has made it known how he feels about men and women, so the whole sexuality thing should be under the carpet by now. I really don't hear anyone talking about his talent and music. If he concentrates on his sophomore album, it could be big for him.

Hmm. That's an odd answer. I think that it's very clear why gay celebrities feel that they need to hide their sexuality. Just by looking what kinds of reactions Adam and other gay celebrities gets... They are really under the radar all the time. You can't ignore the fact that people are still very prejudiced against sexual minorities and being publicly gay/bi (especially in the USA it seams) can have a huge effect to your career.

That was a dumb question. Who cares, we all know Adam's sexuality and his courage not to hide it. Yes concentrate on the next album. I know it's going to be huge!!!

Here is what Jennifer Nettles from country band Sugarland had to say about Lambert:

In this rare sit-down with the singer, a powerhouse since “Stay” stormed the charts and nabbed a Grammy in 2009, Nettles talks coming out in country music, how she still loves her lesbians even if one of them—a former Sugarland band member—sued her, and why Adam Lambert turns her on.

Many country stars have actually addressed gay issues in the press, including Martina McBride, Rascal Flatts and Dolly Parton. And yet we still don’t have a major country artist who’s out. Why do you think that is?
I don’t know why that is. Let’s discuss here for a moment, because clearly there are gay country fans. I can’t even speak as to why. Why do you think? Maybe we might come up with something here.

My guess is that they’re putting their career on the line; it’s scary for a country artist to come out in such a conservative arena, as you said.

But isn’t it scary for any artist to come out? Even in mainstream pop it is. I mean, thank God—and I’ve said this before—for Adam Lambert. Thank God for eyeliner. I have needed a sexy man to wear eyeliner since The Cure. Since Robert Smith no one has really been able to do it for me in that way.

Linda Perry is legend. A writer in her own right and could definitely pen hits for Adam. ^V^illinatrixx^^

Honestly, the only song I try to like is loaded smile, it is not a song you can hear anywhere on the radio. I probably think the song is for experiment. Next time, if there is, she needs to write a hit song for Adam if she is that talent.

Click on Source autostraddle..interesting interview with Linda Perry and performance with her and Pink of What's Goin On..nice.

Re: Lack of "out" country stars..the Bible Belt is pretty tight with country fans...hopefully it will ease up...."Judge not lest ye be judged" might sink in...."Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord", "Do Unto Others," etc. etc.

20 years of Sunday School teaching, I could go on and on....but I shall close this sermon with "Be Ye Kind One To Another".....JAK :)

There are many gays in the Country Western world, not only just music, but they stay deep in the closet. They see themselves as the backbone of America, and aren't comfortable with change, in my own opinion. I lived most of my years in this lifestyle, so I know what I say has merit.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to feel you have to "hide" something about yourself.

In my case during my growing up years it was hard to hide my constant sorrow and concern----my height----when you are 5'11" you're pretty obvious......JAK

Hhhmm, funny (funny-strange, not funny-ha ha)... I've had A Loaded Smile on repeat everytime I've been in the car today... have probably listened to it 15 times today, coincidence :)! I love it, it is actually one of my favs from FYE (as hard as it is to pick them).

To be really honest, at first I thought Perry's answer could have been more, um, productive... but then I reread the way the question was posed, and it was a little awkwardly phrased IMHO - so....
It's all good. Perry so talented.

@ZZ - thanks very very much for that link, I enjoyed that Nettles article very much! Really appreciate it ZZ. Just informing myself about Sugarland a little better as of late (my TWEEN KID actually got me started with them...funny how life is sometimes, and that's funny-strange AND funny-ha-ha :)).

@MGF I am not a country music fan myself but this lady Jennifer is one of the most amazing female vocalists ever. I try to listen to their songs with POP sounds to them. Their last album, the incredible machine has that country-pop sound, they seem to cross-genre same as Lady Antebellum. Check out this song, my fav sugarland song.

WHHHAAATTTT>???!!! Are you KIDDING me??? THAT drivel is what they asked her??? Linda Perry, who wrote such a mysterious song that even had Adam a bit baffled--a song that everyone LOVES and constantly talks about... Linda Perry that P!nk dug out of hiding as one of her Idols and they did the SMASHING 'Mizundastood' Album... then broke her heart & worked with Xtina... THAT Linda Perry worked with our very own ADAM... and they asked her THAT??? WTF??? What an insult!

JEEEEZuz......ask her about working with him... The studio? The voice?? What does she think of him? --> & His interpretation of her mysterious song...when he wasn't sure what it meant and questioned? -- and she told him "just get in there & do it"
WHAT a CLASSIC!!

AAAAand WHICH is it?... is he gonna cheat with the NEXT loaded smile??? or is the loaded smile coming FROM the partner??? HOly crap... let MEEEE ask the damn questions!!!! UHG!

To someone like her who is not a homophobe or rasist that is a dumb question because only judges one by their raw talent. It really is that simple people. I like her and I like she has an open mind for the sake of gifted talent like Adams.

Anonymous said...

@Cindy is correct. There were many question that could have been asked of Linda Perry. When will these interviewers get over the gay thing. Adam is a singer. We, as his fans love him.

Adam always talks about Linda Perry as being a good songwriter. He gives props to all that helped him with FYI.

MGF, I enjoyed reading how many times you listened to A Loaded Smile today. It's one of my favorites, too. It has some kind of a calming affect on me as I listen while I drive on these MA winter effected roads.

Thanks P.A.S. =)
With the great people she's worked with, and the mega-hit albums she's contributed to...she works with about the greatest voice and talent in the industry in Adam, and they ask... that?? UGH....

Why is the so called 'gay', 'out the closet'
still such a problem for so many people? People need to look into their hearts and show love and acceptance to make this world a better place! The fear factor needs education.
