The Hollywood Reporter has gathered some potentially major intel on what could be the follow-up to 2012’s Trespassing. According to sources, Lambert’s label, RCA Records, is pushing for an all-covers album. Specifically from one highly influential decade: the 1980s.

Kaleidoscopic Adam

With a smile, a wail and a plonk
His voice, five octaves strong
Connecting us in a musical throng
Even babies, toddlers love his songs
In time, his third album will be unravelling
Eclectic songs for our entertaining
Catapulting him to great heights spiralling
Like a new star in the night sky shooting
Hop aboard for another tooo-toot ride
Has Adam made it... not quite
Don't be uptight, he knows what's right
After all, it's his to do with whatever he likes
This handsome, shimmering beacon light
Stands tall and firm in his sexy tights
Carving his niche with precision foresight
With a sharp, intriguing chord he strikes
Bull's-eye! in the worldwide limelight
Not perturbed by cynics' skepticism
Marches on in his own drumbeat optimism
Large crowds are drawn to his magnetism
Of songs and performances with enthusiasm
His duet with Angie portrays a caring mentor
Expertly fused in their tenor-soprano contour
As wind beneath her wings to substitute the piano
He duets with her to a standing ovation rapport
Outlaws of Love has always been my favourite
It has come full circle with the Equality ticket
Accentuates the rhapsody of his kaleidoscopic spirit
Adam, your next album/concert will blast off like a surreal wicked rocket... lol!

I think even if Adam does a lot of covers for his 3rd album, it'll still be okay because the way he resurrects the old songs, they sound like brand new songs to me to a large extent. Yea I think his 3rd album is something to look forward to and I shall be there one more time to see him live! Come baby come...lol!

Adam does reinvent old songs, and make it his own. But I would like to see a new album of Adams own music. He still can throw in some 80's music at his concerts. which he has done. And we all love. I am confused, which direction he should go. I want all the best for him. What is RCA thinking.

Let him record whatever he wants, I'll buy it. BTW the music from the 1980's was better than todays crap.

I'm wondering why Admin posted this with an exclamation point when clearly this article has upset many fans. Halperin certainly cannot be a fan with the tone of the whole article. I'm tempted to copy/paste the whole thing here so we don't give THR any hits for this.

I'm hoping at least the quote from Adam about rumors are funny things is true. I can't see an all cover album being a success and it certainly doesn't match with what we have heard Adam says he wants to do.

Hoping this is all a bad rumor that Adam clears up quickly.

I'm buying everything Adam is selling!!!

Anonymous said...

tea, that's the problem. Die hard fans will buy it and then that's the last we will hear from Adam. If this rumor is true it's the end. I'm hoping it's not true or Adam refuses to do it.

If this article is even partially based on truth (and I'm not even addressing the rumors about 80's covers..), it's disturbing to me to perhaps confirm the thoughts that we've been tossing around for the past year: that RCA wasn't 100% behind Trespassing. :((( And could certainly explain a whole lot of things, including lack of radio play.

My understanding of the music industry is that (big) money is paid to guarantee that songs be played on the radio. Major money is also paid out for song writing teams to guarantee that big name artists such as Beyonce, Rihanna, etc..etc., come up with those catchy songs we hear on the radio. I like those artists, and many more, but I would love for Adam to be heard as well. A singer doesn't have to be a fabulous song writer to have hits..but it does require money behind him or her.

It makes me heartsick to think that Adam put his own big heart out there and bared his soul on his very personal album and he didn't get the support that he needed to promote it as it needed to be promoted. Sure he did a LOT of radio station promo, but it didn't seem to elicit the results that you would think it should have. So many of the DJ's loved the music, but weren't allowed to play it. Some of the music may have had a GLBT theme, but certainly many songs had a VERY universal theme. I do feel that the bonus songs were excellent (all of them: Map, Runnin, Nivana....etc.. ) and I wish they had been included on the main album. My husband asked me recently "why weren't THOSE songs on the main album?? They're really GREAT songs." Water under the bridge at this point.

In my opinion Trespassing the album was not given a fair chance. It was critically acclaimed but still didn't do as well as we would have thought. But what do I know?? After all, I'm a big Adam Lambert fan so I may be slightly prejudiced.. It does say to me that we as a culture in the US are not anywhere close to where we need to be in our acceptance of those who are willing to show us who they are, and are proud to do so. Perhaps this album was too soon........ I don't feel that way...but realistically speaking: maybe.

We'll know soon enough whether there is any truth to all or part of this article...........

Thinking positive thoughts for the next album, whatever it may be. And I thank Adam for giving us Trespassing.

he should title the next album "Under my COVERS".

@glitzlady I like what you said. I really hope RCA doesn't want Adam to do a cover album. The excitement from the music he creates himself is what I hope for. Trespassing had lots of great songs on it,and yes I agree the bonus songs are some of my favorite, But what's done is done. Just hope Adam clears up this rumor.

the DJ's at radio are so stuck in a bubble, they don't know a good song if it hit them on the head. They can't get past Bieber, Swift, Perry and Nicki Minaj. Good quality music just isn't getting played anymore. The real singers don't get played because the DJ's are tone deaf. Lambert is the best male voice out there right now!

Anonymous said...

A couple of Adam/Queen collaboration songs as part of album 3 may give it a head start, new as well as covers. The best voice together with the best band can't go very far wrong.

A prime example of Adam's music not being heard widely in the US:

At the Glamily Reunion party at the Brass Rail last week, I was approached by a man in his late 30's (guessing...) perhaps gay, perhaps straight, who knows... who had wandered into the gay bar in San Diego. He said he lived in the neighborhood, drops in from time to time. And he said "Do you mind me asking what's happening here tonight??" I suspect he was a bit confused as to why the bar had been taken over by a whole lot of women, for one thing. I explained (actually, shouted over the music...) that we were at a pre-concert party. And we were Adam Lambert fans. He was a really nice guy, and just curious. At that point in time, the Dj was spinning a number of Adam Lambert dance tunes, from Trespassing and For Your Entertainment, which had been provided by Lambertlust, the organizer of the party. The next thing the man said was "Who is this singing???!!!! It sounds a little like Michael Jackson..." I then told him it was Adam Lambert. He then said "OMG!!!!!! Why haven't I heard this music before??? The guy is AMAZING! FANTASTIC! WOW!!!! I can't believe I haven't heard this....What the hell??!!!" So I explained that it hadn't gotten a lot of radio play, other than WWFM. I didn't go into details (it was hard to carry on a conversation as the music was fabulous, loud, and non-stop..), but I told him the names of the two albums, and that he should check them out. :)) I also told him that Adam just **happened*** to be doing a concert at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar the next night and if he thought the recorded music was amazing, he should definitely go see and hear Adam in person, because he is even MORE amazing live. ...We had a great chat about music in general and he seemed very knowledgable. And sincere.

So there, in a nutshell, you have it. Here is a another potential fan who hasn't had the opportunity to hear Adam's music. Sigh....

Anonymous said...

DJs don't decide what is played on radio anymore, most radio playlists come from a corporate level.

Money is behind the power of radio. Most people have no idea there are any LGBT themes behind any of the songs and the majority of the US is in favor of LGBT equality. The singles BTIKM and NCOE have nothing to do with LGBT issues. This plus the nearly equal lack of radio play around the world shows it has nothing to do with Adam's orientation. Adam is not the first and won't be the last amazing artist to have trouble with radio play. Even songs by established artists with tons of money behind them don't chart. We will likely never know what went on behind the doors of RCA and how much support they gave Trespassing or how much money they were willing to throw at it.

A cover album will not win Adam any new fans.

I hope Adam clears things up for us soon. While the whole THR article is suspect to me for now I'm hoping at least the quote in the article by Adam is true and the whole cover album thing is a bad rumor that dies quickly.

writing songs is not Adams forte. He must have other writers and collaborators and then put his twist on it. You may not like what I am about to say, BUT, there are many people that won't support him because he is gay. It is a hurdle that he cannot quite get over. Unfair, absolutely. He has many followers, but he needs 100 times as many. He will never get them, you can call them names all you want, but they don't care about his voice, only his life style. I am a fan of Adam, and have followed him since AI, and I am not allowed to say his name or play his music in their hearing. This is my grown family and their children, my grand-children. Surprisingly we all have a great relationship, except for this one thing. I am afraid they are not the only ones who feel this way. This may amaze you but there are still a lot of people who have not heard of him, or refer to him as that gay guy from AI.
I would love to see him sing some covers, or get some ones un-released tracks. If he could get another tour with Queen in Europe or UK would be great too. But I think he said that he would rather do some of the not so well known songs of Queen. Not do another tribute to Freddie.

Anonymous said...

TP was a phenomenal album but it didn't get radio play, label promotion or support from the suits. It had universal appeal. Songs like Shady, Runnin' and Trespassing were songs that should have been released. I am not a fan of 80s music and Adam is too talented to just sing covers. I hope this is not true. But I will support him regardless and hope the rest of the people will start paying attention to this talented man who can sing everything and anything.

glitzylady,

I like reading your comments on this site because you seem to know a lot and you constantly get the latest news on Adam.

Even though I am not in the US (I am in Germany but I'm American), I am very interested in what is happening in the US in regards to Adam's career. The radios, normal peoples reactions. Thanks for letting us in what's happening over there.

I can't imagine being Adam right now if this rumor turns out to be real. He was very excited about his new music. Now the label wants him to release a CD that he doesn't want released. It's sad and disappointing.

@Anon 9:01 PM
Just a reminder that Trespassing WAS released as a single here in the US, in the fall of 2012, apparently as an afterthought. No music video, no promo. By then RCA had apparently lost interest and support of Trespassing the album. And sadly, no tour. It must have been terrible for Adam to know that Trespassing the album was for all intents and purposes, swept under the rug.

Anonymous said...

No one said Adam did not want to do a covers cd. he has included covers in all of his concerts, and they are really liked by his audiences. Hoping there is something coming that will put him on the map, if not on the radio. Seems his best audiences are Asia, Europe and UK. That might be where he will release his next album. In the USA of course, but concentrate on those other countries, where he has been received so well.

I really don't know how to feel about this {RCA article.} I'm a little dazed if all of this is true. I can say that I'm so totally sick of the repetition of the mostly awful songs on top 40 radio--over and over again. In my car today, I'm still hearing the same songs from 2 or even 3 summers ago--how can the listeners even stand this? And when I think of the quality of songs on Trespassing that never got a moment of radio exposure I feel heartsick. I hope Adam never doubts his talent and his artistic gifts. Whatever happens, I'm here to listen to what ever Adam sings. He lifts the most banal of songs to the highest level imaginable.

Anonymous said...

I respectfully disagree with those who think this is a death sentence for Adam to sing covers.
I sincerely think it would do wonders for Adam's problem of radio resistance since these were already hits before, only rendered amazingly this time by the greatest vocalist of this generation.
If ever, I don't think RCA would release an all out 100% covers but would include a couple of original and maybe a collab with Queen.
Consider for a moment most of the hip hop sound I hear usually use a revival of a hit, then just rapping over it, and it becomes a hit itself.
Think of Every Breath You Take for B.I.G. or the recent Take On Me accompaniment on a rap.
It is the recognized melody that makes the rap a hit, and acceptable even to me who hates rap.
I see this singing some hit covers by Adam a winning scenario, God willing.

Anonymous said...

We don't know that this is only RCA's idea. Isn't it just possible that Adam who has chosen so many covers to do instead of additional songs of his own, may want to put his spin on some 80's music? We always run with rumours and all over the map speculation.
He looks awfully happy doing those covers at his performances. Maybe he's pulling back after making a personal album that wasn't a real big seller. He's certainly been into reggae and funk lately and that goes back to the 70s!

Anonymous said...

No because.....
It's too early in his career to do covers.

Would always be compared to the original artists.

Won't make much money for himself, but tons for the writers and artists of those songs.

People won't be as forgiven with gender change in their favorite songs.

Has anyone every won a Grammy for cover songs?

Adam has too much creativity in him to do covers at this stage of his career, maybe later down the road.

@8:55

I totally agree with your revelation of how other people think and look at Adam for I am in the same boat with my family. And I know even of people who liked him and voted for him on Idol who do not follow him because of AMA.
He needs to be heard and have a hit and if covers will do it then so be it.

Anonymous said...

Corporate Bureaucracy at its best! Apparently RCA follows a blue print for artists from Idol or any other talent TV shows. They offered cover album to Aiken, Cook, Archie and others. Hope Adam can get out of it and work with better label to appreciate his talent and not use him like a money machine. Adam find a good label and YOUR FANS LOVE YOU AND SUPPORT YOU 100% OF WHAT YOUR ARTISTIC VISION IS. LOVE YOU!

Anonymous said...

@9:29

I do think that doing covers Adam would not have that problem of people thinking he is singing to another man because he will just use the same words not change the pronoun.
Whitney's Greatest Love of All and I will Always Love You are covers.
Mariah's I'll Be There is a cover of MJ's hit.
Celine's Power of Love is cover of Laura Brannigan's hit.
Sorry to give examples only of divas, that's just what comes to mind outright.

Anonymous said...

Covers would do nothing for his career. No radio will play that. It's just rca saying they will not invest In a new album for him. Cover albums are cheap and quick.

Anonymous said...

9:27 has no idea what makes a rap hit and misunderstands the use of samples not to mention what pop and rap audiences love is vastly different.

Doing a cover album at this stage would cement him to the "karaoke" and "reality show contestant" labels forever.

Now I'm wondering if this "source" is some fan who wants Adam to do covers of their favorite era and has no basis in reality.

Regardless, as with every other false rumor out there about Adam, we will beat this one with a stick long past when it is dead.

Anonymous said...

@9:22pm I feel the same way every time I listen to the radio. I get sick every time I hear old songs of 3 or 4 summers ago on my TOP 40 radio station and I think about tracks on Trespassing. Naked Love, Trespassing, Cuckoo, Kickin In, Pop That Lock and others that could have been a great hit songs. It is sickening to read that RCA didn't put much effort to promote Trespassing and only relied on fanbase to call the radio stations to play his songs. SICKENING!

Anonymous said...

I'm going to wait to hear what Adam has to say on this. Not worth freaking out if it is not even true.

Anonymous said...

The whole article may not be accurate. I'm not calling RCA the bad guys until it is confirmed by Adam.

Anonymous said...

Oh no please no covers. One reason Adam audition for Idol was to get a record label deal and create his own music. He mentioned it hundred times on his interviews. He said he SANG other artists' songs and he wants to create his own music. I hope he won't take David Archuleta's path. He did bunch of Christmas cover albums and didn't get him anywhere.

Anonymous said...

If Adam were to do covers, not likely all, he should collaborate with Queen who are from those eras with great pop songs and a complete covers album is not advisable nor likely, I feel; may not capture the younger generation fans effectively. In any case, Adam did say he has already recorded something already in the studio.

No, journalists do not use a fan as a source. It's like you don't know the difference between a twitter rumor or some random blogger and a legitimate journalist.

glitzylady said...

And I agree with @Anon 9:58 PM: we don't REALLY know if there is ANY truth to this rumor or rumors. And I still have VERY high hopes that Adam's next album, WHATEVER it may be...will do well, and be what he, along with the support of his label, really feels is the BEST next step for him as an artist. Something that will give him personal satisfaction, keep him on the radar of the music world, and be both a critical and commercial success. Not too much to ask, right?? :))

I have SO much admiration for Adam's talent and for him as a human being, and I don't want him to get lost in the shuffle of musical "politics" and "the powers that be..". But most of all, I wish him happiness, wherever that takes him musically and personally.

Waiting for something concrete in the way of word, whatever it may be, of the direction of Adam's next album.....

glitzylady - loved the second paragraph of your post at 10:20. I too just wish him happiness and success musically and personally. Like so many of us, I am just so frustrated that his talent and the wonderful songs on TP are/were not recognized - especially after the rave reviews of TP. Personally, I doubt that Adam would do an album of 'only' covers. Guess we'll just have to wait and see if Adam has any comment about this. I'm sure he's gotten a ton of tweets about that article. When I think back on Adam on American Idol, I think of him doing all covers, and brilliantly at that. I also think he gained a huge following at that time because of it.

We all know how much Adam loves 80's music, so this is possible that he could be doing an album of covers. It could also mean, as others have suggested, that he could be doing Queen covers. I would buy that album in a heartbeat and I'm pretty sure a lot of others would too, based on the hugely positive outcome of the Queen concerts of last year.

Susan Boyle won a grammy for her album of covers. Anything is possible. I am also thinking that Adam might not have the time anymore to put into an album of all new songs if he could be judging on idol soon. Just my thoughts....

At this point in time, Adam has a lot more backing and influence on what he wants to do with regard his next album, as compared to when he first started. He should be able to procure a deal to his satisfaction. Otherwise no go! Adam. lol! But knowing Adam's adventurous spirit and also based on a previous comment that he wasn't so much into singing covers, perhaps a 60/40 % combination of new Adam songs, covers respectively could be on the cards. :)

Adam followed the old adage with all his heart, "To thine ownself be true". Unfortunately, the United States of America was not prepared for Adam. Adam was true to himself, therefore he truly is the winner! But, I think it cost him dearly in his career. At least he can put his head on the pillow at night with peace. I still believe some miracle will happen to bring his incredible talent to heights unknown to us at this time. It just has to happen!!!

Anonymous said...

daydreamin, if we want for Adam the success he wishes for himself a Susan Boyle type cover album will not do that. Current fans will buy it but it will not attract a new and young demographic so important to radio play and the pop success Adam has said he wants. Have you read any Queen fan sites? Die hard Queen fans don't want covers by somebody else, they want Freddie or remastered releases. We will be lucky to get anything from Adam after a cover album if there is any truth to the rumor and it happens.

Anonymous said...

My sixth sense tells me that QUEEN is going to be the real catalyst to shoot Adam to super super stardom!!!!

Performing with Queen didn't save Adam before and they aren't going to save him now. The best they can offer him is advice on making a career last.

glitzylady said...

Okay, one more comment and I PROMISE to stop....(for the night anyway: midnight here on the US west coast..)

I could certainly see Adam doing a "covers" EP or album perhaps, for his fans... In ADDITION TO his own brand new music/album. It doesn't have to be exclusively one or the other. Could be both. As in two albums. Certainly possible. But I seriously doubt that his third MAJOR album AKA "Era Three" will only be covers. My opinion anyway...... And again, until Adam says that ANY of this is true..not believing any of it! "Reliable sources" have a way of turning out to be "unreliable sources".. :))

The suspense continues......

daydreamin said...

Anon 11:54, yes I have read some of the Queen fan responses. I have no clue what percentage of those fans heard Adam and had a positive or negative response, but what I read what quite positive, so I just have to go with that. Not accurate by any means, I know.

I do think Adam could gain more fans and for many reasons. I think there are a lot of people who want Adam to make a rock album that are not really fans of pop so much. His covers might be rock and that could win them over. There are a lot of fans of 80's type music which to me, was real music. Not the same ol' same ol' stuff we hear today. Those are just a couple of reasons I think he would gain fans, but again, just my own little opinion.

Cover albums don't win anybody over.

I ADORE '80s music - well, the really good songs which are soooooooo much better than the junk played on the radio these days ad nauseam. I'm surprised that a covers album may be a possibility (perhaps with Queen) but I'll most certainly be buying album 3 whether it be covers or original songs. Trespassing is such a fantastic album (love every song, some more than others) ditto the For Your Entertainment album.

Many pros have put out cover songs that have completely new approaches. I see nothing wrong with that. Younger generations of listeners are introduced to classics that way. Look at the generation of music lovers who were introduced to classics on Glee. When I heard Adam do a cover in concert of Stay, I thought, what a shame that the writer didn't sell it to Adam instead of Rihanna. What I'd really like to see is Adam and Queen work on new music together. That could be epic. They are musical geniuses when it comes to writing music, and they don't stick to just one formula style.

Jadam NZ said...

I have read a comment that there are some unreleased Queen songs that maybe Adam will record. That would be great.
What about an EP of covers, something just to keep him out there.
Have people so against a covers album thought that maybe it is this or nothing. Seems to me the Record company has all the power in these situations.
An EP of Adamized covers would provide both Adam and RCA with benefits.

We might be putting the cart before the horse; the main sticking-out problem is not that Adam can't write or produce new songs; he's so creative and his songs are beautiful. The problem is the songs are not played/promoted/marketed properly. He has written, co-written so may beautiful songs and only one has become a huge hit. So his recording company assumes singing covers would solve this problem; perhaps not or just a little. I think Adam should continue creating/collaborating...his own songs but throw in covers to widen the catch of older and young fans. Collaboration with Queen is a good alternative as Queen's fan base is huge and may give Adam that jump start for his 3rd album.

Slightly off topic.. But INTERESTING article:

"Personal Branding Case Study: Adam Lambert"

Excerpts:

"I recently attended a concert by Adam Lambert. For those of you who need a refresher, Adam is the San Diego native who came in second place on American Idol, Season 8. Some would say looking back he really should have won and has had a more impactful career than the actual Season 8 winner.

The concert was fantastic- fast, fun, funny with a quality vocal performance by Adam and band. No one could possibly have been disappointed by the hometown boy who kindly displayed his loyalty and appreciation to San Diego.

Putting on my personal branding expert hat, I was baffled as I looked around the fan base during the concert. After the Michael Buble’ concert a few years ago, I never thought I could be more baffled. However, I was.

Adam’s audience was loud, wild and ….very varied. So varied that my husband even noticed and commented. All of this made me think what kind of personal brand appeal would attract this audience and why? At first I thought it may have something to do with the venue being the fairgrounds. I quickly dismissed that notion."

"So how is it possible that Adam Lambert has this varied of a personal brand appeal? Leaves the rest of us envious and wanting to do the same with our personal and business brands, I would say.

Well, I would venture it has something to do with the playlist. Not only did he sing all his popular songs, but he sang (and brought in very real, touching commentary about) songs from Tears for Fears, Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Queen. With this varied and exciting playlist, it is easy to see how he captured such a varied audience.

However, the main reason I think he has such a great personal brand is because of his presence on stage. Adam’s dialogue with his audience coupled with his nonverbal communication seemed genuine, thankful, gracious (he tried his hand at comedy and readily admitted he was not a comedian), humble, and get ready for it- JOYFUL! And let’s not forget the semi-regular streaker/fan he has. Yes, she was back. He even handled her with grace, asking the cops not to arrest her.

So next time you go to a concert, look at the singer and see what about his/her personal brand works for you and what doesn’t. How can you adapt your personal brand based on what you saw and felt?"

It might have been his suggestion if they told him no original music. He'd rather do 80s music than Christmas songs.

There is no way he would suggest this if there was any chance he could do original music. None.

Katy Perry started out at 15. She was dropped a couple of times but she was way younger than Adam and had not been in the spotlight. He is in a completely different situation coming off Idol where he got so much attention.

We haven't even heard all of Trespassing! Adam's label really makes me wonder. His top 40 song was MAP. We never heard it? There was a lot of great songs on there.

My thoughts are, ideally, Adam gets to be an Idol judge, puts out a cover Album at the same time, and at the end of Idol has a 4th album of his own brand to promote on the finale.

I personally wish Adam would go back to planning his own show and touring and just being Adam before all these others got involved. manager -publicist etc.
However I guess you need to make money, but Glamnation DID

I have always felt RCA let Adam make Trespassing wanting it to fail , so they could get him to do what they wanted. That is why
there was very little promotion of this album. You have to remember they are the same older white guys in suits that didn't want to give Adam a chance befor Idol.

Anonymous said...

No one wanted Trespassing to fail. RCA loses when that happens. Adam got way more promo than Kris Allen did coming off the same label at the same time. Labels make decisions on how to spend their money based on what they believe in. They clearly didn't believe in Trespassing but that happens to lots of artists. Adam isn't some special victim, it's just business.

Bringing this comment over by David Cook fan posted on MJ:

FallBack....
It sounds to me like they're giving him options he won't want to agree to, so they can legit say "well we can't come to an agreement so we decline to move forward". David Cook inferred the same thing. At first, he said at a show I was at in December of 2011, barely six months after TLM's release, that he had to "go home and write another record". He talked about writing new material with his bandmates for a couple of months on Twitter, then suddenly nothing. Then in May of 2012 he revealed he'd been dropped in March of that year. He said that the two sides couldn't come to an agreement as to direction, so they mutually parted ways (I can't remember if it was in Shirley's interview that he did the day of his 2012 Idol performance, or in one of the other interviews he did around that time). Sounds like RCA is unfortunately doing the same to Adam.

I'm so torn about this whole thing. I want to hear Adam sing anything and everything, but mostly I want to hear him sing whatever will advance his career. Yes, covers can become hits. It does happen. But that is not my first choice for Adam. Just brain-storming here, like everyone else is. Maybe a new album with some of the songs (probably some very good ones) that Adam recorded that were not chosen for TP, combined with the really good 80s covers, if that is the directive he must take. Just a thought. None of us know if the covers idea is Adam's or RCA's. Either way, money is definately an issue. He is not making tons of money doing one-off shows and charity events. He's done a little TV (Fashion Police, etc.) but I can't believe that those things pay that much. Bottom line, he needs $$$$ backing to put out another original album. Apparently, RCA does not want to invest in an iffy proposition. TP did ok, but not great, even with the foreign sales.

This is a real turning point for Adam's career. The Idol aura is past and now he's on his own trying to maintain his momentum. The fact that he is super-talented isn't an issue. It's the marketplace, plain and simple. He has to make changes somehow in musical direction, label, marketing, whatever. He's too good to just let fade away. He was born to be part of all kinds of media. He just needs the right backing to get his talents recognized. This is the time we have referred to when we said that following Adam is a rocky road. Well, it's bumpy now. It is possible that the cover album is his own idea. I wish we'd hear from him. The Idol thing is still out there, too. That answer should come before too long. Whew! I'm exhausted.

Adam and 'covers' for #3? Hell no!
Adam is an international star and the US industry have fallen short of promoting a genius in their midst. Sure if Adam had been the cutesy 'Mad World' boy next door
they'd have fallen over themselves promoting on those airways. Fortunately Adam is an incredible professional true to the core entertainer of majestic talent and clearly out the box with vocals that leave people breathless. The guy can run circles around artists that claim to have talent but the mighty $ rules. Sick indeed in an industry game and many of those artists will be here today and never heared of tomorrow. Adam is here to stay and one day will hit Broadway in all his glory.

I think Adam saw the writing on the wall and gave up on the idea of a pop career some time ago. He was prob in NYC looking at what options he would have in theater. He made no secret of the fact that he would like to get on Glee and has spoken to TV producers on more than one network. He said he was working on his comedy skills - hopefully taking some acting classes.

glitzylady said...

And at this point I think we should take a step back and remember that this is all unsubstantiated rumor.. Lets see what Adam has to day.. Or someone who actually KNOWS..

Adam and Sam should write together and locate to Australia! Nile included too!

Anonymous said...

At first I thought this might not be a good idea for Adam because it might show lack of support by RCA for Adam's music. However, because Trespassing did not go over well on the radio, maybe this is a viable option for Adam FOR NOW. I seem to remember Justin Timberlake telling Adam he should do rock music because of his spectacular voice and not everybody was doing it or could even do it. I think people are wanting this kind of 80's music due to the success of Adam with Queen. Why not do brilliant covers of this music as only our Adam can. I'm thinking it will sell huge and get more notice for Adam (and money!). It doesn't mean he will never create his own music again. For now, it might be a great idea. Anyway, Adam has proven he can change up a classic and make it even better. I would certainly buy his music and I know others would as well. I'm for it! nancdruuu2

Anonymous said...

Well it is coming from a legitimate source and it has not been debunked by adam or shoshanna who have certainly seen it by now and would have shot it down if it had no basis in truth. So I would not call it an unsubstantiated rumor. Not that it has been decided he is going this way.

And please, get real. No way will this sell much.

Anonymous said...

@8:25 true.I said this from day one adam needs to find his "SOUND" he still has yet to do so.I heard someone say adam does not have a radio voice what does that mean?

Anonymous said...

All these comments and speculation...no one knows what will happen with Adam's career at this point. He probably doesn't even know what is next for him. I think this next year will be a pivotal one in his career. Whatever he does might just make it or break it for him. I'd love to see an original album from him instead of covers, but in today's crazy music world ruled by tweens and teens, Adam may not fit into any category/genre of music that sells. It always comes down to the almighty dollar and what will make money for the record company. I don't think RCA knows what to do with Adam and therefore did not support Trespassing. How can they let the best vocal talent in music today slip through their hands? I won't believe any of the stories unless Adam reports something himself about his next album. So I guess we just sit back and wait and listen to all he has given us already from his two albums and all the vids from the concerts he has done here and globally.

Don't mind this rumor too much, keeps him in the news. As far as the album, only our Adam knows for sure, and like he said, he wasn't going to share with his fans this time around about it. I think Adam has been aware of this talk from RCA, from the beginning of the year. He has had to come to terms with RCA's suggestion about cover songs, which might have had something to do with his actions over the last several months. This might be a hard pill to swallow for Adam, that RCA wasn't quite happy enough with Adam's own music. He does love doing covers, If he can do an album with a mix of 80's rock and a few of his own rock, he might be able to get an album out quicker. Doesn't matter what he does' radio won't play him, so he has to by-step that part, and do something quickly. Adam has kept his mouth shut all year, concerning his new album, knowing there might be controversy from his fans. There always is about every thing from wearing no socks to growing a beard. or changing his hair color.
We have seen changes in him this year, from the split, the heavy drinking, to the NY scene, where he went to every kind of scenario that counts as entertainment. Looking back, we can see that all that happen, and wondered why. Now the time has come for him to bow to the suits, and let them have their way, and try to work with them, as I said this has been a hard pill to swallow . But they don't care as long as they can do the album a lot cheaper and bring in the big $$$$. Adam will never lose his hard core fans, and just maybe bring in a new crowd. 80's rock covers will be music that the younger crowd might never have heard. As long as they can dance to it, they will be happy. Ultimitly Adam has to work this out himself, so just be patient and don't criticize his choices. Who has said they will always watch his back, now we can support him %100. Go Glamberts!

Anonymous said...

Just remember there were all kinds of rumors and so called "credible" rumors about Adam getting AI last year, we all know how that turned out.

Anonymous said...

I've been reading all these interesting posts trying to decide for myself how I feel about these "rumors". I'm a huge fan of the 80's music and it's obvious that Adam is inspired by the music of that decade...hence he chooses to sing cover songs from that era. If the "rumor" is true, I think it's entirely possible that Adam suggested an "80's Concept" album to RCA. Why would RCA suddenly come up with the idea for Adam to sing covers of 80's music? It just doesn't make sense. Adam can outsing anyone out there right now and any genre he wants...he's that talented. I'd love to see some covers of Rock music and some of his own original music too. Some more collab with Queen would be fantastic if that happens for a 3rd album.

Whatever he decides to do...I'll be buying it. New fans? Like someone said...make it danceable, great rock beat and they'll be happy.

BTW, when I was at the Del Mar concert last week I was amazed at the diversity of people in the audience! Plenty of young people, kids, teen-agers, grey haired, middle aged...just all kinds of people and all were screaming, applauding and loving it IMO.

Adam is such a mega talent, I'm confident he will be fine. He's such an intelligent person, too, that he will figure out what's best for him to achieve the success he desires.

Sorry for the long post :)

Is this considered cover of 80s tracks by well known artists? I heard JLo, Rihanna doing these type of twisting old songs of 80s. If Adam does something like this I'm all for it. Ugh!!!

Anonymous said...

Just a couple of observations and speculations. Feel free to disagree but let's be nice about it--

1-I don't think RCA fully endorsed Adam's songs on "Trespassing" because of the "gay" references. Granted not all of the songs had these but a bunch did and they, along with the songs, constitute the album. Of course the Glamberts are going to support and buy anything he puts out but the inferences in some of the songs narrows the field as far as new fans. Why do I believe this? I bought a whole bunch of FYE albums and gave them to friends of mine--only a few complained about the "He" reference in Fever. Everyone liked the bulk of the album. I did not do this with Trespassing--I knew the same friends would be somewhat offended by the curse words (didn't bother me at all) and the gay references. Some other Glamberts told me they faced the same quandary with Trespassing--whether to give copies to family and friends. Hence I think Adam took over the executive producing of this album because RCA wasn't supporting it 100 percent. And perhaps this is why it was so long for the album to come out--because of the back and forth between Adam and the label.

2--The release of BTIKM was (if I remember correctly) pushed by the label. I have come to love this song especially when he sings it live but I remember my reaction to it at first--"This is it? What we have been waiting for? Do I really like this dubstep beat? Does it actually showcase his voice?" Of course when he did the radio station promos for it, the song sounded amazing--but not so much on the record (IMO). It just didn't make that splash that we were looking for--I remember a reviewer described BTIKM as a "dubstep WWFM" but no, it didn't come close to the latter's catchiness.
After waiting so long, the first single should have been uptempo, exciting--i.e. "Trespassing, Cuckoo, Pop that Lock"--even Kickin In' but again, BTIKM was the safe bet. The first single kind of introduces the album to the public and those who weren't die hard fans just put a period after that release. (I read many disappointed comments on various sites)

3--Now what?--Before anything "album wise" happens with Adam, I really think he needs to duet with an established diva--i.e. Kelly, Katy, Kesha--whoever (notice I gave up on Christina and didn't even suggest her). A hit with one of these gals would open the door to "radio play" and increase a general interest in him and a next album. The question is ---why hasn't this happened already? I would have hoped by now that at least Katy would have included him on one of her songs. He certainly has given her (along with many others) enough props via his Twitter account. And along with this, I think Adam would welcome the American Idol judge-ship. What does he have to lose at this point? If anything, people who don't follow him would come to see his charm and allure every week--and perhaps be lucky enough to hear him perform.

Done--comments welcomed. I am not an authority but I base these thoughts on my contemplation of someone I think is hugely talented and underrated. Oh, by the way--his stardom is much bigger than top 40--he has the charisma to do lots of things including TV, movies, a talk show-- all globally. In a way I think RCA realizes this and Adam's increasing LGBT impact and would be foolish to drop him.
Now, really done.

Along with some other big rocker's and or pop artist. I do not believe anyone could cover that era better than Ad and have heard big names say just that about him. Covering Queen hits, other of the 80's I would love it, maybe some duets with the singer's too. My credit card waiting for you Adam dear, always support you. I appreciate you taking time to articulate your thoughts, and I tend to agree with you. I've had some similar thoughts/concerns that you expressed in

Point #1, particularly this statement: "Hence I think Adam took over the executive producing of this album because RCA wasn't supporting it 100 percent." I expressed the same opinion to some friends just yesterday...because in retrospect, that would explain so many things. It was obvious to me that while RCA continued to be his label, their enthusiastic support of his music on Trespassing was curiously lacking in certain aspects. (As I expressed up thread a ways...........)...

#2 point: Yes... It was clear to me that Better Than I Know myself was the intro song to his "concept album".. Explaining the Light and Dark sides of the album. It made sense in that regard (an intro...) but I agree, a real blockbuster dance song would have been particularly awesome. I still think Pop That Lock could have been a successful single but what do I know?? It is one of the best songs when Adam performs it live (IMO), and on the album itself, it was (and is..) probably my personal favorite dance/up beat song. (Similar to Fever being my favorite fun..get up and dance... song on FYE). But alas, PTL was not released as a single. I love ALL of the bonus songs, including the European album bonus songs. But Adam explained that they "could not be released as singles" for whatever reason... And asked why Runnin was a bonus song instead of on the standard album he answered with a laugh "I f**ked up." I also think the aurally pleasing Map would have been successful. But then again, who knows. Hard to second guess. We all have our favorites...

#3 point: I agree completely with what you say here. Collaboration with a major established top 40 singer or two. It's being done so often now. Why not Adam? And to be honest (and I will probably get slammed for this....ducking now...) I would love to see Adam open for someone like Pink, Katy Perry, Gaga...Bruno Mars, Rihanna.... I know that we LOVE to see Adam as the headliner of his own tour, but I also see major established stars teaming up for tours now. And that would open up major opportunities for him to be seen and heard by so many thousands, even millions of people who haven't really known how fabulous he is live.......or recorded. And YES to Idol if he's offered a judge position. With the new revamped Idol, it could be a huge opportunity for him...

I also agree with your last paragraph: "his stardom is much bigger than top 40--he has the charisma to do lots of things including TV, movies, a talk show-- all globally. In a way I think RCA realizes this and Adam's increasing LGBT impact and would be foolish to drop him."

And with our discussions of the many sides of Adam...we are never "done" ;)))))

Adam is an ever evolving and always intriguing artist and human being...and the important thing here, in this lonnnnnng thread, is that we all want the very best for him. I also suspect there are MANY things in the works that we here know nothing about...so we wait... for his next big announcement.

I'll be here..............

Anonymous said...

The opinion that Adam executive produced because RCA didn't 100% support him is not based on fact. In more than one interview Adam said it was up front and at the beginning that he asked to be executive producer. He was in that role from the start.

I heard it's Clive Davis who is the problem and didn't like Trespassing why there's no support.
Remember Kelly's problem with Clive, it's the same for Adam.
IMO, a cover of 80's hit will put Adam out there ASAP, with less funding, no fees for songwriters except royalties and easily picked up by listeners and hopefully a bigger hit with Adam.
Read that comment fro Adamtopia.

A cover album will signal to the public that Adam's career is over. I hope the rumor is false.

Perhaps for a lot of singers, making a cover album could signal a down-slope direction in their career, but we have seen how Adam sings the covers, as if they were his own songs. Frankly some of them sounded brand new to me. Like Mad World, Born To Be Wild and even Don't Stop Believing...I only paid close attention to them when Adam sang them. The main reason is I had stopped following pop songs closely for quite a while until Adam came along and revived them for me. Okay, on the flip side of the coin, we the enthusiastic Adam fans will not get to hear Adam's brand new songs because he won't be doing any. If Adam thinks he wants to give his brain a break, because creating original songs is definitely brain exhausting, then I say okay to the all-covers album. Somehow I'm not so flustered about it because one way or another, his super singing talent and technique will make millions still love him and attend his concerts. The real problem is whether Adam himself wants to do an all-covers album. And if his recording company says they will give him full support with regard promotion/distribution, perhaps a satisfactory deal could be struck. And if Queen steps in with this projected all-covers album, then the sky's the limit and might even jolt Adam a couple of notches up closer to his goal. A music career goes through lots of twists and turns before it settles to one's acceptable equilibrium.

The thought of Adam collaborating with Pink makes me feel totally ill, I can't stand this women she is so over-rated along with all the others mentioned on this site. Adam doesn't need them he should always head line his own show, I also can't stand the way so many here on this site love to try and run Adam's career for him, OMG, if Adam listened to half of it his career would be doomed for sure. All these fans wanting Adam to do it this way or that way with absolutely no knowledge of the music industry is ignorant to say the least. Adam is a professional in the true sense of the word and I have faith in him and I'm sure he will work out the best way ford without all these naive comments about collaborations with artists like Pink, good at acrobatics but her voice really needs an overhaul.

The majority of those posting comments here, and on other blogs, websites, etc., as well, are merely discussing the possibilities of what might be coming next for Adam career-wise (because we care about him), and at the same time, are trying to make sense of what happened this past year, since Trespassing was released. We really know very little at this point in time of what's happening next. And we are dying to find out!! .

This rumor of the "80's cover" album sparked the discussion. Everyone has an opinion, of course. As long as they are thoughtful and respectful and wishing for Adam's success, acceptance, and respect in the music industry, then no harm is done. Obviously Adam will make his own decisions, along with input and direction from his label, management, and advisors: the opinions expressed here carry no weight. I suspect there might be some truth to the rumored "covers" but then who really knows (other than Adam and his label..and maybe a few others), BUT I also think Adam will be putting out some original music as well in the not too distant future.

As for your assessment of Pink :))), you are more than entitled to your opinion, but she IS a superstar after all, writes amazing music, and I personally like her a lot. A collaboration in music, or as I suggested, a shared tour (not that either of these things are actually happening: purely hypothetical...), would be a positive thing IMO. Pink sells out arenas on her tours. She has millions upon millions of fans. Her voice is uniquely hers. Rough, sultry, raw. Not everyone is a fan and doesn't need to be. Of the 3 major concerts I'm seeing this year (so far...), Pink's is one of them, coming up in October. I just saw Adam in San Diego, and will be seeing Bruno Mars in a couple of weeks in Seattle. For Adam to have a more visible connection of some sort to either of those two superstar artists could give him a boost in visibility for himself. (We know he already has SOME connection to both...WWFM & NCOE...)

I don't agree that speaking about collaborations with Artists like Pink, etc., is naive. We hear of it with increasing frequency out there in the world of music. And I do think some here have some general knowledge of the music industry. At least a little bit.

As for me, I'm just imagining the possibilities..... :)))

Pink is my absolute favorite female singer. Glitzylady I agree with your description of her voice. We all have our own opinions and that is OK.

Whenever I hear an old song, I always imagine how Adam would sing it. I would buy an album with covers just to listen to Adam sing it in his style.

I agree with many valid points in your interesting comment. :)

LOL at 11:53 going off on Pink. The professional reviews of Pink usually include a comment on her amazing ability to sing live and on key while hanging upside down.

I love pink. I also think it is completely unrealistic to think any big star will work with adam at this point. He couldn't get one to collab with him on trespassing

Sorry you've given up on Adam.

I think adam will need to move on to another area of entertainment. I have given up on the idea that he will be a pop artist

Every professional big star/singer in the world has heard Adam sing by now, know of his powerful and beautiful VOICE, his RANGE and that he is MEGAtalented... and I'm pretty sure not many of them are willing to put their voices to the test... only a few can match his voice (power, range, purity, nuances etc), even less of those who truly know how to SING & PERFORM LIVE (and sound even better-er than on record)!!!

The ones that really are not that good singers or whose voice needs 'technical support' (you all know there are many...) surely don't volunteer... and I don't like the idea of Adam doing a duet with somebody, if he has to tone down and/or put his talent in harness so that the other singer is not outstaged/outsang...

So even everybody knows what a kind, helpful and co-op guy Adam is, most are probably down right skeeerrrdd of his voice and talent...

jmo, no disrespect to any one singer/performer

no one is scared of adam's talent. omg you people are nuts

Glitzlady, I am Anon 6:06 and thank you for taking the time to respond to my thoughts. And again, they are just from my own experiences. I still agree it would be nice to see Adam with an established star (like Pink--somehow I forgot her in my list and she is critically acclaimed). He loves these gals and would have a ball performing with them and yes, it would open doors in the "pop world" for him. I mean after all that is what I think we all want for him on this site--more people to be exposed to his incredible talent. Once they are they are hooked.

Hey everyone! Good morning/evening! This thread doesn't seem to want to end. lol! I guess bottom-line is we're pretty concerned when it comes to Adam. If Adam reads this thread, he'll be touched, I feel because he knows full well what love and concern is all about. I respect all artists and never run them down but to suggest Adam open their concerts seems a little downgrading and not so respectful to Adam. Collaborations for exposure is fine. And yes, as pointed out by Anon, it's also my preference Adam sings solo rather than duet; but his duet, The Prayer is very good, somehow.

@Lam-my
I agree with everything you said, except one thing. :))
I think perhaps (?) you're referring to my comment (and some other's comments too) about Adam (only in theory) opening (or sharing) a tour with the likes of Pink, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, or perhaps Muse (I just thought of that one...).......(I wasn't suggesting he open for The Beach Boys or Barry Manilow for instance...Not his style..or era..). The above artists (Pink et al) are massively popular and although I really don't know that it would happen, I don't see that as being a come-down in status for Adam. The massive exposure to many potential new fans would be a boost to Adam's career, in my opinion, whatever that's worth (probably not much...). And I suspect Adam wouldn't mind being in a show with any of those very current pop stars that I mentioned.. But of course I can't speak for him. It was just some idle musing on my part, while waiting for some REAL Adam news. And boy did we get some "real Adam news" today!! This all of course BEFORE we heard the AWESOME news of Adam on Glee!!!! Sooo excited for him!

And I TOTALLY agree with you: Adam's duets of "The Prayer" are stunning. Some of my favorites highlighting his voice. His operatic side is something I would love the masses to hear. Perhaps some day......

Peace..

The term, "opening concerts" for other superstars, doesn't fit Adam at all, in my opinion; because usually a lesser, unknown star opens for a much bigger pop-star, as a filler, something like what Alison did for Adam. And yes the singers mentioned are massive in terms of sellout concerts and fans but in terms of singing/voice they are nowhere compared to him. I respect all artists, they are very special in terms of their individual talents. Adam will do it in a heartbeat because he wants the exposure. I guess the term "opening concerts for other superstars" sounds pretty downgrading like a hint he can't headline his own concerts, as pointed out by above Anon who too, got pretty flustered by the idea. lol! The term, collaborations, puts Adam on equal footing with the singers mentioned and certainly more respectful as Adam too is a superstar; the difference being, the ones mentioned had a lot more years in building their career to achieve those massive numbers.

Not that it matters :)) but my point was that two popular stars sometimes combine forces on a tour. For example: Rihanna and Kesha in 2011. Rihanna is the "bigger" star but Kesha is certainly not an unknown either. Oh well. Kesha was the "opener" but drew fans of her own in addition to Rihanna's. But I respect your opinion.

I personally LOVE seeing Adam in the smaller, more intimate venues.. Because we can see him up close and personal. But I also wish him great things, including large arena size concert venues.

Another example: At the Kiev Queen/Adam concert last summer, the "opener" for them was none other than Sir Elton John. Not quite the same really, since Sir Elton was also the sponsor of the show..but still, I doubt he felt too badly as the opener for Queen and Adam Lambert, who were ultimately the main event it would seem. :)))

I suspect this is all moot anyway. Just talk. And you know I would never ever ever wish Adam to feel inferior to anyone, or unappreciated, or disrespected. I have the greatest respect and admiration for his talent. His star is still rising though... And his greatest times are still ahead of him.

Again, Peace.

The impression you gave was Adam could benefit by, quote "I would love to see Adam open for someone like Pink" etc. And you even suspected something amiss and said you were "ducking for cover". The Elton John "opener" does not have the same connotation as he was really the 'boss', more like an intro. And regarding Rihanna and Kesha...they teamed up; again not the same connotation as your original words. I'm not the only one to interpret it the way I read it. Anon, below your above comment, blew her top as well and I agreed with her. Well you may mean something else but we the readers will take the words at face value because we can't decipher your thoughts.

glitzylady said...

@Lam-y
You left off the REST of the quote :))

"I would love to see Adam open for someone like Pink, Katy Perry, Gaga...Bruno Mars, Rihanna.... I know that we LOVE to see Adam as the headliner of his own tour," [and I also said this] -->"but I also see major established stars TEAMING UP for tours now [as in Rihanna and Kesha..]. And that would open up major opportunities for him to be seen and heard by so many thousands, even millions of people who haven't really known how fabulous he is live.......or recorded."

How about we just agree to disagree and leave it at that. I know we both wish the best of the best for Adam, which is clearly the important thing.

If you had written the comment this way, just above, no one would have got flustered. lol! The keyword which you've just used...teaming up for greater benefits for both the superstar singers, definitely puts Adam on the same footing as Pink and all those mentioned and not like Adam is lower than they because I measure the artist's strengths by their talent/singing/voice/songs and not just by the size of concerts; because that's not too fair as these mentioned have many more years head start than Adam. It's been nice talking to you as long as there are no unnecessary intrusions. :)

Lam-my

Anonymous said...

@Ladies,
pardon the intrusion, I hear you both and I agree that it would be fantastic to see Adam in a HUGE concert teaming up w some 'big arena star' who attracts huge crowds everywhere she/he goes. But there is a 'problem' and that's Adam's VOICE (and stage presence etc)! The examples, the singers you mentioned all have great voices (and many big arena years under their belt and most probably huge egos..) but they PALE IN COMPARISON to Adam's pipes & his talent HOW TO USE those pipes (I have no words left to describe his singing)!!! This means Adam's voice poses a threat to them and gives chances for direct comparison in the same concert...

Imo a huge festival or benefit (like Live Aid etc) with a lot of performers would be a much better solution to get Adam in front of a HUGE crowd. But they are so rare nowadays. Just my thoughts. Love Adam, always!

Anonymous said...

"unnecessary intrusions"? I think you just did that Lam-my. LOL

Just for clarification, I was referring to those masked snipers' unwarranted intrusions, perhaps like the trembling, nameless one at hand.
