LOS ANGELES -- Equality California will honor singer and songwriter Adam Lambert, a San Diego native, and Facebook at this year’s annual Los Angeles Equality Awards.

Presented by AT&T, the awards will take place Saturday, Aug. 13, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

“We’re thrilled to honor Adam Lambert and Facebook whose work has been a catalyst for social change and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality,” said Roland Palencia, Equality California's new executive director. “Their courage and leadership in entertainment and social media have helped Californians become more supportive of LGBT rights.”

Lambert gained international fame as the runner-up on "American Idol" in 2009. Since launching his solo career as a singer and songwriter, he has been an outspoken and fearless role model for LGBT youth nationwide.

Lambert also participated in the “It Gets Better” campaign with the hope of helping LGBT youth overcome bullying. His new song “Aftermath” will benefit the Trevor Project, a national suicide-prevention hotline for LGBT youth.

“I am so honored to be invited to and recognized by the Equality California event,” Lambert said. “It’s a pivotal time in the progress of equal rights and I'm very grateful to be the subject of such broad visibility. I strive to lead by example by making no apologies for or withholding my identity as a proud and comfortable gay man. I strongly believe that ALL people have a fundamental right to love who they want to love and if they so choose, have their union recognized by the laws of this country regardless of sex, age, race or religious affiliation. I am hopeful that we are getting closer everyday to this idea of Equality.”

He said he is "honored to be invited to and recognized..." I guess it's inconclusive whether he will go or not.

Adam is a beacon shining his example of equal rights for all to follow, and his response to the honor reinforces his core beliefs as a proud and honorable gay man. Because of his example Adam has inspired others to gather courage and believe in themselves, and end their secret suffering.

Perfect. "You get back what you give away"
"So don't look back on yesterday" Perfect. :)

I am so proud of Adam. He doesn't necesarily want to be a role model or poster child for a cause, but he is being recognized for it anyway, without any effort on his part...just by being himself. Amazing man.

Next album he is going to take over the world!!!

Adam had to take a lot of flak with some in the gay community that didn't think he was doing enough, or he was too flambouyant, especially some at Own magazine. I think Adam has represented the LGBT causes in the best possible way, being himself with no apology, shedding light on the double standards and giving his time and voice to provide support and promote equality. I think his positive visibility and generous nature has changed a lot of minds and he has earned a lot of acceptance and repect. So glad for him to be recognized and honored. Have to admit, It really gives me a sense of satisfaction that AT&T will be sponsoring it. Adam has worked hard and built a good reputation since the AMA performance and it seems to be paying off. I think this will be a great year for him in many positive ways. He's changing the world in ways that he probably never imagined. He's a powerful force for everyone. funbunn40

So happy for Adam, and so glad he is getting recognized by the LGBT community! He deserves this now. Hey, Sad Al, I think I know your sister, Debbie Downer:(
It is so hard to please everyone all the time. I don't think anyone can really do that.(Although I know a lot of you are thinking Adam comes VERY close!) Adam has taught us, grown, and learned a lot from the last 2 years. He is a true leader. Can't wait for the new single!Oh, and I love the picture!

@lmb 9:52 PM Thank you for such funny comment:)
I don't think Adam wants to please anybody. He has his own goals and brilliant future.
But nobody knows when Adam will get recognitions he deserves for his talent as a musician but not only as a Best Role Model or gay rights supporter.

Oh my 9:35, you are a very unhappy and angry person. In some respect I agree with you, but let's not demean Adam or this modest honor with sarcasm.

It's a long slow and agonizing process to change people's conception. It is true that some in the gay community have been Adam's worst detractors. Jealousy is such a fundamental part of our nature, isn't it? But every inch, every small step, every open mind make a difference.

Congratulations and Bravo to Adam for this accomplishment. I was very impressed with his honest (what else) acceptance comment. Absolute realness.

@anon 10:12 PM I think there are a lot of unhappy and angry persons who made comments about Adam AMA rehearsal and "shocking performance" previously.
Like I see many of Adam's fans were scared after AMA and most of them still suffering and wait for MIRACLE recovery. But it seems that this recovery will take much more time than 2 years:(

You're welcome.
We won't know about the success of the "recovery" as you call it until the new single is released...and then the album. But I have to tell you, I have been pleasantly surprised by a lot of things this week, and so I'm betting on Adam all the way (with fingers and toes crossed, of course).

and

@adamlambert has decided to make some waves to bump up his Q factor in a markedly gleeful new direction. Enough clues for now!

Could it be....Glee and New direction mentioned in the same tweet????? Or am I reading too much into it...

I'd like to comment on the general perception that the AMA was a tactical error on Adam's part. Sure it polarized people, struck fear for Adam's career among his supporters and engendered even more loathing from his detractors.
The first step to change for the better, it's believed, is to face fears, expose the unknown, and see the lie for the truth. The AMA "bump" may have alienated many of Adam's fans and give ammunition to homophobes, but Adam's deft, compassionate, and unapologetic handling of the affair could not have been more apt. In interviews and appearances after the AMA, the kerfuffel around Adam served a purpose that in hindsight proved healing in many ways: the furor around Adam's affront to homophobic sensibilities unwittingly brought hidden prejudices to the fore, challenged destructive perceptions and made us question accepted beliefs. In the two years since, a palpable change in attitudes towards the LBGT community has made society more open, more honest, more accepting, and even more loving. Adam had refused to apologize for being a gay man and to compromise his integrity as an artist. His strength of character and belief in his right to respect and equality firmly entrenched, Adam did not budge from his position. It forced those who needed to, to move instead.

It is not for nothing that the AMA video is surfacing, juxtaposed also against the AI Confessionals, where Adam reveals his thoughts as he progressed through the elimination rounds. Watch them, and you see a young man strong and confident, but humble, who asks us to "keep voting", not "keep voting for me" so as not to be presumptive or to impose his will, but to allow you your freedom to choose. A small distinction, but plenty gracious in terms of what it says about him. Someone once commented, Adam makes one feel "special";if so, perhaps it is because he has seen both sides of the coin, having been made to feel special by family and friends and to feel despised by homophobes. I believe some of his noblest hours came in the aftermath of the AMA when, he did not cave or cower, but stood his ground and defended intelligently the position of a male artist. He parried the barbs of his critics with wit and compassion and doing so, melted hearts and changed minds. By staying true to himself, a magnificent artist who happens to be gay, we were forced to look at "the man in the mirror" to see ourselves as we truly are, that if we didn't like it, we could change--to become more accepting and respecting, to stand taller, to take courage, and to love one another.
For sure there will still be some haters, but they are laggards who do not know that their time will come. As it's been said, time heals all wounds, or time wounds all heels, take your pick.
Far from being a mistake, I believe the AMA was not so much a disaster as a blessing, society's important teachable moment.

@Anon 1:47 PM
Thanks for your insight. I know that his courage to be himself is one of the many reasons I admire him. I do think that the AMA's was a problem for him in the short term in America (it just was...plain and simple, sad to say..) but at the same time agree with your comments for the long term. And ultimately why he is getting this award. Breaking down barriers and speaking out about and working toward equality and basic human rights for all.

For those who are not familiar with the "Idol Confessionals" that Adam did during Idol Season 8, and to which you referred, this is a link to Devenlane's recent blog compilation of the entire series, originally from Vimeo.. I had posted them a couple of links back and have referred to them in some of my recent comments, on the AMA Rehearsal thread, etc., and here they are again. I loved hearing/seeing them and I think everyone who is a fan, or for that matter, is not a fan (yet), should hear and watch these.

"Idol Confessionals" Adam Lambert Season 8

http://devenlane.blogspot.com/2011/06/2009-american-idol-confessionals.html

I would love it if admins would post these to a thread topic if possible. So much insight into how Adam strategized during Idol, etc., a different topic each week. And his personality really stands out, as well as his humility. A beautiful human being.

I spent my 4th of July defending this beautiful man. I have never seen so many narrow minded people. I just want to say, take a step back, look at yourself. Do you see a perfect person? I think not! America, this is Adam's time to shine. He has worked hard and deserves credit. Shine on baby!

Anonymous said...

Those AI Confessionals are great. He's humble but also confident, he knows who he is. He says: "everybody's got an opinion", so whatever you do there's always going to be somebody who won't like it. But others will like it (they'll love it). So you have to keep an eye on the goal, what it is that you want to achieve. He has worked very hard and has already achieved so much. Just keep on doing what you do Adam! And btw that picture is really cute.

Adam Lambert has brought about social change. He lives his life out and proud. No apologies - as it should be. Some people may see his AMA performance as an albatross for him. But I think the majority of people can appreciate the game changing event that it became. It forced discussions and the inequality became apparent. He went on to support the Anti-Bullying Campaign and The Trevor Project. Congratulations Adam. You are brave and talented and your path hasn't been an easy one. Blackballed on tv and radio after the AMA's Adam continued on till it was undeniable that he was a great singer. A successful cd and tour. He promotes being yourself. Look at his audience. Gay, straight, old, young. All nationalities. In Malaysia he was told to tone it down. He omitted the kiss. In a country that does not accept homosexuality even more than the USA. they TELEVISED his concert. Amazing. He goes around the world and is loved. He is an extraordinary talent and a remarkably strong, brave man who has taught us all about acceptance. He deserves this recognition and much more.
