‘I’m creating a world for myself’: Adam Lambert builds off old performances by Queen’s Freddie Mercury!

As Adam Lambert gears up for a globe-trotting tour with Queen, he’s done more than simply pick the brains of co-founders Roger Taylor and Brian May on the legend of Freddie Mercury. He’s gone back to the source tapes, all in an effort to strike the right balance between honoring the fallen frontman and adding new wrinkles to it. “I’m one to really dive into the whole world when I do something,” Lambert tells News.com.au. “I’ve watched countless documentaries about Freddie; I’ve asked questions of Roger and Brian. It makes it feel more real, I’m creating a world for myself to exist in on stage. I can watch a DVD of Queen in Montreal and listen to the interesting things they did musically that might be different to the record. There are so many ins and outs; it’s a real challenge and a treat.” Lambert has been stepping into the late Mercury’s shoes in appearances with Queen dating back to 2009, when they shared the stage during the finale of television’s American Idol. Mercury died in 1991 from complications relating to the AIDS virus, and Queen bassist John Deacon subsequently retired. That’s left May and Taylor to carry on, both as keepers of the Queen flame and as key mentors to someone like Adam who wasn’t there when so many of the band’s most iconic moments unfolded. “Freddie was so many different things — a great vocalist, a great showman and an amazing songwriter,” Lambert says “I do my best interpreting the songs with the original intent. Brian and Roger are the icons here; I look to them for a lot of guidance.”

Yes, that's the psyche of a perfectionist; they always delve into the depths of things and not just sing a Queen song as in this case. That's how he earns the respect of Brian and Roger; it's more than just his super ethereal voice, he gives his whole self and we can see that. He once said: It's very energy draining; but added: It's worth it. QueenBert, up up and away, sing your way from the west to the east, Adam.

What you all said above; right on! Not very original I know; but it is what it is, your words are so true!!!

Whoa, just watched the IHeart video; yes, Adam gives his all; super synchronisation ending; when Adam puts his hand up, Roger smashes his down and Brian vibrates his strings, perfectionists kill it real dead. lwl!

OT I saw that there was a World Music Awards this year. For all the people telling us it was not real and to not vote. I guess you really don't know everything. Yes I am being snarky, because they were hateful to me when I brought the link to vote over here.

11:06 yes I mentioned that on another thread. If there is this award show next year let's make up for lost time.

@Adam and I'm sure it's a magnificent world.

@11:06 Yes, I noticed the World Award Show too. I was one of the fans voting for Adam over and over until so many said it was not real so I stopped. If it does happen again, I think we should pay more attention to it.

About this thread and Adam's comments...I have such respect for Adam, his intelligence, thoughtfulness, humbleness, creativity, and mega talent. All these strong characteristics shine through and I think more and more people, not only fans but people in the music industry, are beginning to realize that Adam is a force to be reckoned with. I can't wait for the Queenbert tour and for people to be amazed by it all.

Referring to Brian and Roger as "keepers of the Queen flame" is a lovely sentiment and very true. Queen is definitely in the best of hands. . . . Adamluv

11:06, Where was this award show?

The show really did get in trouble for fraud a couple of years ago. The newspaper reported that the venue wasn't booked and the "scheduled" performers made press releases that they had never been booked or invited.

Not sure where it was held, but it was aired on NBC. Mariah Carey and Miley performed and received awards.

It was held in Monte Carlo...

The World Music Awards were scheduled on NBC at 9PM (EST) on May 28. When I tuned in, they were airing Newsman Brian Williams interviewing that Snowden guy. Boring! Where were the Music Awards?

3:30 pm, it never aired, got pulled at the last minute:

NBC will air a repeat of last week's premiere of Last Comic Standing in place of Tuesday's scheduled World Music Awards. NBC has not issued an explanation for the last minute swap.
The awards taped Monday night in Monte Carlo, but reportedly there were issues because Mariah Carey showed up late for her album launch, which was scheduled to take place before the awards show, resulting in her showing up late for the awards and, allegedly "creating chaos". However, the award show did take place, complete with a performance by Mariah, and the source for this story is a British tabloid so it may not be 100 percent accurate.
According to Billboard, The World Music Awards canceled a planned livestream of its pre-show red carpet due to technical difficulties, so there may be a more mundane explanation for NBC's decision to pull its telecast of the show.

Can't deny the previous fraud issues and now this. Hmmm....

Sounds like the World Music Awards are kind of a mess.

I saw a tweet from World Music that the telecast had "technical difficulties" but would be broadcast at a future time..

To be honest I hadn't planned to watch it anyway (not because Adam wasn't on it..but I've seen enough music award shows for now, as I do try to catch some of them, Adam or no Adam :)) ..but I imagine a fair number of people were disappointed..

I totally love the way he puts everything he's got into every single project or performance.

I didn't find the Brian Williams interview with Snowden boring at all. Now, the World Music Awards I would have found boring.

@7:16 PM I agree. I have no interest in awards shows that don't include anyone I'm a fan of, and I admire very very few celebrities.

The more I read and learn about Adam Lambert just reinforces all the reasons he is my favorite performer in music today. He is not just an amazing vocal talent, but Adam is articulate, intelligent, creative,honest and so personable. This collaboration with Queen is going to be something spectacular, probably the best concert tour of the summer. It appeals to all ages and lovers of great rock music. No matter your age, once you hear a Queen song on the radio, as part of a movie soundtrack or tv show, even a commercial, you recognize it immediately. They have become iconic and will live on in music history with Adam bringing a new energy and interpretation to the songs.

Smart and sincere reflection of Adam! HH

The Brian Williams' interview of Edward Snowden was the most intense and riveting TV time I spent lately.
It was compelling to watch and hear Snowden's side from the other part of the world.

@HH
Hi dear HH, long time no see!

Have to ask you, did you see our dear friend @Fan4fun posting here again a couple times after a really long absence!??! She's been through a lot of hardships, but hopefully things are getting better and she will return to this site very soon with Icon and Amalia!

To be exact, it's Snowden's side from Putin's Russia! Hope this thread stays about the subject at hand; and not get political about this guy in any way!

Our beautiful Adam Lambert is our man of the day!
