Concert Review: Queen + Adam Lambert brings “magic” to the Palace

By Gary Graff, @ggraff@digitalfirstmedia.com, @GraffonMusic POSTED: 07/13/14, 9:04 AM EDT | AUBURN HILLS

EXCERPTS:

"Queen once asked the musical question “Who wants to live forever?” but the veteran British band is doing a pretty good job at that — and an even better job these days with “American Idol” finalist Adam Lambert in tow "

"The result was an unquestionably entertaining two-hour and 20-minute re-creation of a classic kind of Queen show, from the song ordering to the instrumental transitions in between. Queen + Adam Lambert mined Queen’s repertoire for the must-play hits and crucial album tracks, playing the music in the present-tense but also aware that it was a tribute show — which even included Mercury singing parts of “Love of My Life” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” via video and a warm montage of vintage Queen footage during the Taylor-sung “Days of Our Lives.” "

"On a night like this, I feel like (Mercury’s) here,” May told The Palace crowd. “I feel like he’s here, he’s very much with us."

"Lambert hardly shirked under the imposing specter of Mercury in particular and Queen in general, however. He demonstrated a confident presence from the get-go of “Now I’m Here,” “Stone Cold Crazy,” “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Fat Bottomed Girls,” an impressive opening salvo that could have shown any number of chinks in his armor. But with five costume changes, impressive vocal gymnastics and plenty of cheek — he sang “Seven Seas of Rhye” and “Killer Queen” while chaise-lounging and chugging champagne at the end of a ramp extending from the stage — Lambert neutralized any doubts about whether he was the right man for the job. "

"The troupe’s nod to now was a revised version of “Love Kills,” Mercury’s disco track from Giorgio Moroder’s 1984 soundtrack for the silent film “Metropolis.” But the past ruled throughout the night as “Radio Gaga,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “The Show Must Go On” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” — with the operatic section delivered via video — finished off the main show and the encore pairing of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions,” with May sporting a Made In Detroit T-Shirt, brought the concert to a triumphant conclusion. "

" “I think tonight there is a lot of magic in the air,” the guitarist mused at one point. "

" That may indeed by reason enough for Queen to live forever — or at least until it can come through with Lambert once again. "

Except for a couple of Quuen wannabes, all reviews have been positive to great. This tour has brought a whole lotta love and pleasure to Glamberts everywhere. Bravo!

What a lovely sentiment, hoping the guys made it back again.

I guess there are thousands of people who DON'T think that just because of their age Roger and Brian should sit home and vegetate.

They are still rocking, the rocking chairs can wait!

@Lam-my-off topic of this thread-but, yes, I did get to view your post to me late last night while I was at the airport in another city.....In Las Vegas, the songs that made me cry were "Love Kills" and "Who Wants To Live Forever"-it is absolutely incredible to hear these songs live, no comparison to a video. Lam-my and JAK, I presented a toast to the both of you whilst I was partying with some of the other Glamberts. I know how very much you both love Adam and that you will not to get to see this tour live, but you both deserved a toast just for the factor of your intense love and support of Adam..... Here I am a week later still on a high from the Las Vegas shows. Thank you again Lam-my for your message to me and for all of your descriptive fan poetry. You definitely take the job of "fan" to new heights!!! Margarita Lady

@Margarita Lady....JAK here....just taking a quick peek before bedtime. It tickles me to think of being 'toasted' in Vegas! ;-).....Thank you ma'am.

I'm so glad your adventure was a success. None of us could possibly have imagined what a 'worldwide connection' would come from turning on the TV and seeing the young man on Idol sing for Simon, Paula, Kara and Randy.

His was "the face that launched a thousand trips".......people driving or flying from all directions to enjoy the sight and sound of him. What a treat he has been in so many lives.

@JAK-you are most welcome!!!! You are so right with your words about Adam. He has added such happiness to so many lives. The beautiful testimonies I heard from fellow Glamberts in Vegas were indeed inspiring. I know personally that in 2008 when my beloved husband suddenly passed away, ADAM was the one who made me want to listen to music again, and to ADAM I will be eternally grateful. Margarita Lady
