Adam Lambert part:
The show has often overlooked more distinctive talents for competitors with a better TV story; the post-Idol careers of nonwinners like Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Katharine McPhee and Adam Lambert seem strong evidence of that. Musicians like Jackson should have been a corrective for that dynamic, but he never had that kind of impact.

I disagree. Adam was not overlooked by the show and Randy was a big fan, as pretty much all of the judges. It's not their fault that the American public voted for a different guy to be the winner. Blame America's "taste", not the show. On the other hand: How cool is it that several non Idol winners made a legitimate career for themselves?

I don't get the hype about The Voice. Has there been any major star emerging from that show? Idol appears to have produced more stars from non winners than The Voice ever has. Their hype seems to be all about the judges who are really good at pimping each other and their own music. From my point of view, like in many talent competitions shows nowadays, the judges seem to be the real stars of the show. The huge "pay off" is evident, that's why many artists want to be judges nowadays.

Wrong title. Here's a better one: "Farewell To Randy Jackson, An Example Of All That Ails Singing Competitions". I'm not a huge Randy fan, but let's be fair and keep it real. I think the market for singing/talent competitions is over-saturated.

Randy once said to Adam, I think you're going to be one of those stars. He said that during Hollywood week. He was a big fan of Adam's from the very beginning.

He said the same thing to so many...

Randy is not all that ails the singing competitions. You might want to look at a certain judge who leaves, then ask to return with a certain amount of money promised. Some may say why not, easy money; and all the advertisement a person needs when their new album come out. Sounds like it is all about the judges and not the contestants.

Kinda makes me miss Simon, and especially Paula; she really was invested in helping the contestants, and really cared about Adam and others. She and Adam are still friends today. They had that cute skit on the VH1
Diva show when Adam was the Host.
I have also seen them at other events at the same time, and they always have a warm welcome for each other, and nice things to say about each other too.

I think Randy bragged about Adam more than he did most though.

A scathing article about Randy.

I'd watch American Idol again if Simon returned to the judging panel.

Whoever wrote this makes it sound like Adam is saying Randy is an example of all that ails American idol. I believe Adam likes Randy, and besides, he isn't mean spirited.

I love American Idol. Brian May said they (Queen) must have had a half million people contact them to say they had to watch Adam on American Idol. If there were no American Idol, we might never have had the magic of Adam Lambert in our lives. My life would certainly not be the same. I for one feel indebted to the show. I am soon to be 80 years old and love Adam to pieces.

Anon 8:59, you make some very good points. I had always been grateful to American Idol for helping to launch Adam into his successful solo career, but without the show and Adam's choice of a Queen audition song and playing with Queen during the finale, would Adam be on tour with Queen
