NOTE: This is an "unofficial" review from a "casual" Queen fan who had very little knowledge of the "new man" Adam Lambert but he very quickly realized what a talent Adam is... I would also encourage you to read his response to the first comment. He briefly discusses media reviews, etc.. Insightful.

"My Royal Appointment… An evening with Queen" by John Smart

THE INTRO/EXCERPTS:

"There are a few people in life who are so skilled at what they do that you very quickly realise they deserve your respect. Adam Lambert is one of those people."

"Before last night, I knew little of the 30-something American singer, save for the odd YouTube clip and the fact that he’d finished runner-up on American Idol. He is, however, a very special talent indeed.

"I can’t profess to being the world’s biggest Queen fan. But, like many men of my age, I was bought up listening to their biggest hits on the way to the football in my dad’s car and I’m well aware of their deserved position at the very top table of British rock, so when the opportunity came up to see them in the flesh for the first time, I couldn’t really pass it up."

"So, I entered the venue with an open mind but some uncertain expectations. By the end of the show, I was far from disappointed. Blown away is a more accurate term."...................................

I knew the minute I started reading this review that John Smart wasn't just a "basement blogger." He's a professional writer who has broad experience in the business. I really like the way he expresses his appreciation for Adam and Queen and the legacy that drives it. And most of all, he "gets" Adam in a really perceptive way. He wrote that Adam has a "masculine edge" that skillfully walks that ledge between camp and pastiche. Adam is a master at this. He has an incredibly masculine body and forceful presence, and he knows just the right amount of feminine nuance to make it sensually exciting and fun. The shoulder roll, the eye glance, the various ways he walks across the stage, sometimes stomping with a manly strut and sometimes lightening it up with a flair. He's conscious of that sexual balance and really makes the audience feel it viscerally. No wonder they're so emotionally moved. It's more than just the voice alone.

Jon Smart also (as you pointed out, glitzy) that professional reviewers always have an agenda. Sometimes their true opinions have to take a back seat. Not all the time, I don't think, but probably more than we'd like to believe. Loved his write-up.

WOW, Dee R Gee....

Perfectly said on all accounts. Such acute insights you have on Adam - his performance style, his essence that comes through on stage, the extraordinary appeal of his brand of sensuality, and the impact of all this on his audiences.

You articulated so well what so many of us find so difficult to put a unequivocally accurate finger on.

You pin-pointed it awesomely.

Thank you, GF! I adore your post. :))
