"From Glambert To Kelly: The Greatest ‘American Idol’ Finalists Ranked"

21 Past American Idol Contestants are ranked by Gil Kaufman

Excerpts, including his highest ranking Top 2 Idols of all time!

I’m not gonna lie: This time it’s personal. Over the past 13 years, I’ve spent more than a solid month of my life watching, writing and thinking about “American Idol.” Yes, technically, it was my job, but 900 hours?

Let’s agree to disagree now, before things get uglier than a Nicki-Mariah shade-fest. Note: I didn’t include anyone from the current season or seasons 12 and 13 because, well … Also, these rankings are focused on “Idol” performances, not post-“Idol” careers

#1 Kelly Clarkson: The first winner and still the greatest.

#2 ADAM LAMBERT: He lost to ... Kris Allen, but nobody brought more originality, glam and over-the-top flash to the show… ever. Also, he handled the constant murmurs about his sexuality with grace and dignity and answered them in his own time.

All in all, an interesting list.

If Adam not #1, I'm pleased it was Kelly. I didn't see the 1st Idol series so I missed her audition .... what a hoot!!!

For the record, Kelly is my second favorite, and well, Adam is my favorite.. Kelly is awesome, a wonderful singer and very down to earth..

Other than reversing the positions, #1 And #2 in my book too....

I wish people were aware of some of Kelly's performances in the Non-pop arena, she is truly a gift as well. Very glad she and Adam are #1 & #2. Glad Adam is above Carrie, who is amazing, but doesn't have the range of Kelly and certainly not the range and depth of expression and creativity as Adam imho. Nice to see Adam's name so much cuz of this story in the news cycle (& not just entertainment news), good timing and very cool! (sorta wish Kris' name didn't have to get inadvertently slammed :(, but I have no control over that, & hope Adam fans don't go all OTT in the comments sections!). But, yeah, great timing, hope to see new album mentioned here and there in these stories until they peeter out.

I like this guy's list because it's not the usual names in the usual order. Sure, I love Adam being right up there with Kelly, just as he should be. But I also like the inclusion of some of the other excellent contestants who generally don't make these AI lists. Alison is rarely on a favorites list, for example. Adam broke the mold in so many ways, it's beyond belief. Although I think it is truly time for AI to end, I'm glad it brought us some really talented singers, esp. AML.

Makes you wonder what they use for criteria....obviously record sales which would just continue triviality. That would have about as much relevance as the voting on Season 9. ....Adam is clearly the most talented, fearless, challenging, polarizing, memorable contestant and everybody knows it. Hurrah to this writer from MTV News...acknowledgment is a treasure!!

coloforadam, I appreciate your view point about Adam, and I feel the same way, but for many people those very things were/is the very things some people don't like about Adam. When he was on AI, I heard responses from friends, that almost stopped watching because they absolutely did not like Adam. To this day these same people would not buy his album.
As was said , this article was not about how many albums were sold, if that was the case, then Adam would not have the #2 position.
Kelly Clarkson, is definitely #1, IMO more people remember who she is, and buy her music, and really like her as a singer, even though she is not as charismatic as Adam.
Adam is remembered more as the gay guy from AI, now these are not Adams fans obviously, but at least they sort of remember him.
Most of the winners of AI have been forgotten, but some of the non-winners are remembered.
Who people like, and who they don't like are very personal things and feelings. There are still people out there that still say they can't stand Adam's singing, I have a couple right in my own family.

Adam's strong point is performing which a lot of singers don't actually have. They may have a good voice, but are not as entertaining in a show. I am glad he made #2, I definitely think that was a correct placement. I also think that some people think he should be lower on the list. Everyone has their favorites. Of course his fans all think he should be #1.

I like American Idol, I do agree that Adam sang every one out of the ball park, and the show never was the same after that. But I still enjoyed watching it. It was my no. 1 show to watch thru the winter when it started to the spring. I agree I will miss it.
Well another era went down, no more American Idol.

Adam is an amazing vocal talent and has a mesmerizing stage presence. I waited each week to see his performance on IDOL and also the way he looked(hair, clothing styles,etc.). Adam is the only contestant I ever voted for also and in recent years I really haven't watched the show unless I knew Adam would be on it. The show has become more about the judges rather than the contestants. And what has happened to the last two winners? Haven't heard anything about their music careers. Adam proves that you did not have to be the winner to have a successful and rewarding music/entertainment career.

I still on occasion watch Adams Idol run on YT as it was such fun and no one IMHO ever came close to touching it.

When Adam was on Idol, I looked forward each week to see him perform. There was something special and amazing about each song he did. I have seen some of this season's contestants and these last top 3 or 4 don't interest me at all. They lack that "IT" quality that Adam has and no one since then has come close to his vocal talent. Nice to see so much attention being given to Adam in stories about the end of Idol. I'd love to hear him and Kelly do a collabo since both have such powerhouse voices.

I compare everyone to Adam. And so everyone else is a disappointment to me. He was just so exciting! I have watched that youtube 2 hour video of all his Idol performances so many times. It never gets old. My dad enjoys watching it every once in awhile too.

I mostly enjoyed watching the auditions - after that it got pretty tedious.
But I was fully engaged for Season 8!!
BTW the pic for this thread is so hot - will always love him in that phase.

9:33 AM, if you haven't seen anything about Caleb you aren't on the internet much. He is regularly reported on by Yahoo and JustJared and was all over recently about his leaving Interscope.

The Greatest Am Idol Contestant for people outside US (and some other English speaking countries) is definitely ADAM LAMBERT!

@choons
Agree, he looked unbelievably hot and beautiful!
