from The Original High by Adam Lambert
unofficial lyrics, group effort

When you're gone, when you're gone

It's like I'm in one second in time, I'm frozen
When you're gone, when you're gone
It's like I lost one half of my mind, stolen

Cuz nobody feels you like I do

Nobody kills me like you do
Nothin I take can ever cut through
I'm in trouble
I look at myself, and I don't know
How I'm stuck to ya like velcro
Can't rip you off and go solo
I'm in trouble

I'm hooked on how you make me,

hooked, I'm wanna say it straight
I want you, I need you,
I want you to take me underground

I'm hooked, I can't cut ya off

In my blood I'm gonna say it now
I want you, I need you
I want you to take me underground

Beautiful indeed. But it's a song anyone could have sung. Reminds me of Nick Jonas' recent works. It's an obvious point that the world is missing out on the huge talent that Adam Lambert is but to be quite honest, Adam Lambert is the main person who is missing out on himself.

People tend to think that Adam's voice, stage presence and etc. were the key factors that won him the American Idol praise. Unfortunately those factors combined, all made up 50% of the excitement. But a huge 50% of the attraction was the "fearlessness", the "it" factor. The face that Adam did things that others couldn't do. New, fresh, undiscovered...

The same factor that Adam desperately tried to tone down to be like anyone else! To be accepted like anyone else. To be a mainstream artist like anyone else. Now take away the mesmerizing smell of an exotic flower and you're left with a beautiful bland flower. Take the rare color of the flower as Adam's incomparable voice. Yes, you'd put the flower on a shelf and look at it AND you'll know you'll find, even if only 10 out of a 100 flowers, other species that have that uniqueness with their color.
But that smell, that otherworldly unique scent was what took you away...

It's extremely hard to earn people's acceptance, radio play, industry's open arms when you're someone different like "Adam Lambert". Yes to have longevity you have to sacrifice many things. Being Gay doesn't help with closed minds either. More importantly, not having a free stage like Idol's and not being able to take risks as much as you like. Let alone the label's pressure and the age and demographic factors and so on...

But turning into "merely another star" won't help with none of that. Let's face it, this sweet talented man that we all adore so much with such huge talent and fabulous voice, very RIGHTFULLY has been in search of attention and the well-deserved fame he must have had already. This drive and focus on garnering the attention of those intended, gradually decreases the full attention an artist will bestow on their art. AND NOT THAT IT'S A BAD THING! not at all. Image is an important factor for an artist, a star, nowadays. BUT... is Adam Lambert "any artist" ?

I watched Adam's Idol journey thoroughly for the 97th time yesterday and covered the longest gap to date that I have had between these re-watches. With a fresh observation and a new evolved approach towards the meaning of Adam Lambert, the artist, the activist, the star, the frontman and the unique mind throughout 7 years of fandom, I discovered at first glance it's the captivating presence, then that amazing voice, but lastly yet most lasting it is that ripple Adam made in the pool of the monotone idol performances that made the difference. Dancing to the beat of his own drums and taking confidence in that dance!

Can't forget the backlash his rendition of Ring of Fire received in the next few days after the performance, but he took pride in it and stated continuously that this is me doing country, it's gonna be like this. Take it or leave it. The performance, carrying the crown of originality, started to take off with the audience and the media, excelled and gained such momentum that is being numerously dubbed "the performance that forever changed idol" courtesy of Adam Lambert!

The same happened with Queen. So much backlash, so much disbelief. Yet he was confident and just sang his heart out, STAYED TRUE TO HIMSELF and didn't try! That same exciting "effortlessness" that Slash, Jamie Fox, Simon Cowell, Smokey Robinson and many others stated countless times. The effortlessness wasn't only about his vocal performances, but also about his presence with him fearlessly enjoying the moment, unleashing his colors and yet engaging his powers and talents into the performances. Suddenly Adam Lambert the "wannabe Freddie Mercury" became Adam Lambert "The new crown prince" of Queen. He just stood there, did his thing, and "didn't care who they were at all..." Confidnece.

At the end of the day it is very difficult being the amazing Adam Lambert. I sit here behind my keyboard writing things i think is right but i can't do even 1% of the things that Adam does. The 20 first tracks on my MP3 player's "most played" tracks are all from Adam Lambert and yet I'm complaining and projecting my wishes and hopes on someone else's career choices.

The thing is we, as bonafide Glamberts, will support and love anything Adam Lambert does, because we are in it for him, no matter what. But it is him who has to win audiences beyond this circle and for now he has chosen to do this by diong it the way "they" like it. Noting that doing what he likes completely hasn't been that successful (sales-wise) recently, i as a member of the rare male Glamberts in this fandom really hope he can gain the success he wishes for with this era to establish that base and strong platform on which he can unleash his true powers.

Lurker, you make many thoughtful, valid points. The thing that sets Adam apart for me is the way his voice gives me the "feels", particularly at certain points during some of his songs...for example, during and right after the bridge in Chokehold, the ending of Nirvana, after Monte's guitar solo part of Sleepwalker sung live, etc etc. The passion combined with his talent is like a bomb that goes off. He is gifted in that he has the sexiest lower register, and the most sublime falsetto.

As for the lyrics to this song, they are "unofficial" so who knows - maybe the actual lyrics are a bit different - but the main thing for me will be HOW he sings them. Will he wring every last bit of emotion out of them like in Can't Let You Go? When I first heard Adam talking about "toning it down", I will admit I got nervous and had some of the very same concerns you're expressing. I guess we'll have to wait and see when we actually get to hear this song and the full album. :)))

Lurker, you mean in your opinion. So please don't say "we."

You think it was 50% fearlessness. I don't. I think Adam's voice, stage presence, entertainment abilities, etc made up much more than 50% of what he offered on Idol. Now there is so much more we can see about him that fearlessness is an even smaller percentage of his key factors.

Idol wasn't a free stage. He could have been voted off any week.

I do not think Adam has "toned it down" at all. He is evolving and becoming more comfortable. You sound stuck on something you saw six years ago.

Then you praise Adam for staying true to himself regarding Queen. That is exactly what he is doing with his current look and this album.

I strongly disagree that Adam is "doing it the way they like." Adam has and still remains true to himself and what he wants to be.

Your thinking is wrong if you think he must be something else to gain fans and doubly wrong if you think they would then stick around when he unleashes his "true powers." If they didn't come for whatever you mean by "true powers" they won't stay around when that appears later. Most people don't stay around if they don't like the new thing a performer is doing. Except for you obviously, who is longing for Season 8.

Adam said he was partly hiding behind all that make up and costumes, not to mention it was a lot of work. He said the partly hiding part both Trespassing era and this era. This isn't new. He said he is more comfortable with fame now. I agree he has evolved. I love the many different phases we have seen and to me Adam just keeps getting better in every way. I'm not concerned at all. I am ready to fully enjoy what Adam has coming for us.

Regarding Adam and Ring of Fire and originality, he said he got it from another cover.

It was probably from this done in 2002 or 2003? Melissa Kaplan of Universal Hall Pass

Dilana did a similar cover on Supernova

On the elimination night Randy said it sounded like the Jeff Buckley version, and Adam said it was.

Interesting post, lots of ideas debated and ...debated again, anyway , the topic will forever be of great interest to Adam's fans:are the past days of glam and glitz more appealing than the present days, than the 2 singles already released which seem to prefigure a more conformist stage persona or performances? I think , like you, that THOSE WERE THE DAYS , but I also remember the long, painful fights we, all involved, Adam, his teams, his loving fans , had to fight for acceptance with the suspicious Radio, with haters who never ceased to mock, to hate, to spread wickedness because, only because Adam was different, was eccentric, was flamboyant. Because his fandom was growing older and more and more nostalgic. No offense, I'm not a Juliet either, I think old age is more than white hair and extra kilos , it means to allow ourselves to remain captive of the past, past habits, to be judgemental and always dissatisfied with what is happening around us.
It's no use "crying'"over the past, we loved Adam on AI, we loved Adam during The Glam Nation Tour, we , I'm sure, will love Adam's future Tour.
A last word for...whoever, new fans, younger fans will join us only if the songs are good, as Adam said, a good song is a good song regardless the genre and if the promotion is varied, creative, intelligent.
PS The orchid is also an exotic flower , splendid, even if it is scentless!

5:09 AM, I don't remember that and can't find anything online about
Buckley ever singing ROF.

Once again Adam moves on and some of his fans can't.

Go, Adam, stay current and do what you want.

6:17 AM, here is proof he didn't.

Never mind, I found out there is no Jeff Buckley version. Randy Jackson was speaking theoretically. I wish he had kept his mouth shut.

Unless somebody can find a video of the elimination video there is no "proof."

6:39 AM, thank you for proving my point. Randy says he liked it, Adam did a Jeff Buckley take on it and all Adam said was thank you.

Anonymous said...

You didn't listen to the whole thing. Randy said not many people know that is Jeff Buckley's version. And Adam shook his head yes.

Great song, loved it! he always come up with great lyrics, look here http://www.brandnewlyrics.com/adam-lambert/underground/

7:16, LOL Adam is nodding thank you and there is no Buckley version anywhere for Adam to have heard but believe whatever you want.

Lurker, thanks for your thoughtful post. My thoughts: Adam burst from Idol swinging like a home run hitter. Edgy, different, powerhouse voice. He played the game well, balancing the risky with the conventional, but always with an original twist. His GNT tour was glitzy and glammy, overtly sexual, and certainly outside the box of AI. We diehard fans loved it, but others found the post-Idol Adam hard to accept. He's been through a number of changes since then, searching for his own vocal identity. Everyone knows he can sing in a spectacular manner. But as Adam once said in an interview, "It's not about the voice," when it comes to getting a hit song on the charts.

I love the sound of Underground. And yes, it sounds pretty conventional, more so than Ghost Town. But if he doesn't get a song, maybe Underground, to the top, where a broad base of listeners will hear him and accept him, he'll never get a chance to return, at times, to his riskier more alternative side. One success leads to another. I've always loved the overtly sexual, glammy Adam onstage, but I've loved all his variations since that time. He has to be savvy to get radio play.

If Underground seems a little too safe for some, I'll bet anything he's got some barn-burners on TOH that will really show off that amazing voice and blow the roof off the joint. Hope we keep GT strong so that we'll get at least a few more singles from TOH. I think Underground sounds marketable and radio friendly and shows off his voice. Good lyrics, too.

I love the new song. It is very radio friendly. Hopefully it will be a single. I can see this bringing lots of new fans.

I thought Shosh said Underground isn't a single.

It is not a single now. Who knows about the future.

Hi, some of the lyrics you posted are inaccurate. I updated them!
For example: "I'm hooked on how you made me hooked,
I wanna say it straight
I want you, I need you
I want you to take me underground"
Still not sure if it's "I wanna say it straight" or "I'm gonna say it straight", or both.

Personally I was terribly disappointed with the AI results. Yes, Adam is multi talented, but to achieve the success he seems to want he needs a song the radio will play that will attract new fans. This "Underground" song offering does seem more mainstream, almost R&B, to my ears, but if we are fans, then we are along for the ride, even if it seems as though Adam is flirting with the everyman label, by sounding like others, who though less talented receive much more attention, sales and fame. To attract a new demographic, Adam has to do something different to get to the point where the mention of his name will cause people to buy his music, like a Rihanna or a Beyonce to name a few. Perhaps the strategy is to go all out, explore every avenue and sound to get to his goal. Adam has laid himself bare, exposed his inner feelings and emotions, but to date that has not been accepted or acknowledged. Adam wants something more from his career, his life and I can't criticize him wanting to try other paths vocally, because after all Adam is searching for something, which at times, even he doesn't know what he is after. IMO that Adam has achieved a level of success he could not have dreamed of prior to Queen, but only Adam can answer what it is, he is after. No, I don't like that he has not been given his due, but no matter what, it's Adam's voice and his choice to seek a new sound to garner new fans. I hope this is something that Adam is comfortable with himself and that he does not lose his uniqueness along the way, because if you lose yourself, that is no way to find out who you are. I like this song, a bit more than GT, but in a way it seems like Adam is searching, not for a genre or a specific sound, but just for more sales and that's sad in a way. Personally, from some of the interviews lately, I think Adam should have been given a bit of time off after the Queen machine, before becoming immersed in promoting his own music. At times, interviews focused more upon his perceived disappointments and blaming others for his relationship issues than upon the music. This is still a relatively young man, who has a lot on his plate, perhaps too much.

Yes, touring with Queen did raise awareness of Adam, especially in England. But fans who say he couldn't have achieved this level of success or recognition without Queen are selling Adam short.

Anonymous said...

Queen gave Adam exposure on every level, particularly to worldwide scrutiny. One thing about Queen, despite their success, not one of them was able to achieve solo what they had achieved collectively with Queen. I'd hope that while some of this promo,, magazines etc seems pointed to Europe, that Adam does win over the US. Seems that's what he wants and Underground does seem very radio friendly, even if the strategy is not to do radio with this song. Seems like there is a lot of buzz about this song though.

I think Underground is fantastic! I could listen to this all day! Adam's voice is stunning and I love how he sings his own background music! It is perfection! My favorite song of TOH so far! I want it to be the next single and a video pleassssssssssse!

I like this even better than GT. Perhaps with so much buzz, it will be impossible to not hear this on radio. R&B sound, this could so be a crossover hit for Adam and I can see the black stations jumping on it. Hits are hits and sales are sales and new fans are welcome.

I love both Ghost Town and Underground and his two previous albums but in reference to comments above, I love Adam the man mostly. His beautiful voice would not mean anything if he was not the sweet, kind man that he is.

GT is the gateway to so much more. All the songs on TOH will not be just like GT or UG. I think we'll get lots of variations on the album. Adam has to grab attention with something different like GT (which he did) and then get more music out while the attention is high. The biggest hit on TOH may be yet unheard. But there is certainly a nice buzz going about the album and Adam himself.
