So The AI Runner-Up wants to wipe off his AI image; yea, about time; but this sort of change is not a matter of wiping the slate clean. It evolves naturally from one stage to another; much like the butterfly going through its metamorphosis from its beginning finally flying out as a full-fledged butterfly. If there was no egg or larva or pupa stage...there wouldn't be a butterfly. So wiping the slate clean will not actually change Adam completely, some residues of AI or for that matter, his previous musical acts will remain. But I know what Adam is trying to say...his music will progress into a fresh new stage totally his own and I do feel that in his latest album Original High. Well, I'm ready! Let's proceed...lwl!
It's so annoying when people call Adam the, "American Idol Star" or the American "Idol alum". It pisses me off when people compare him only off that show like its the only reason he's still relevent. He's his own artist, people need to realize Idol was almost 7 years ago. He's achieved a lot more than coming runner - up on a Singing show. Damn that annoys me.
I've been feeling lousy lately at the mere thought of Adam wanting to change himself, his music, and all we know and love.
I decided to watch a couple of hours of Queen and Adam concerts and that made me feel so much better. That was definitely perfection.
Adam: You've said you believe you can mix all types of music. You don't have to abandon all that you've done up to now, just mix in the new stuff. The thought of wiping the slate clean of all your previous work is scary to me. Very scary. I hope you aren't serious.
'I want to wipe the slate clean,' he says, referring to his past sound and Idol-influenced work on his first two albums For Your Entertainment (2009) and Trespassing (2012).
Wow. But I liked the past sound. This new sound is so dance and electronic. I'm not sure this new direction is for me and that makes me sad.
When I first heard Ghost Town, I used the word, breakaway, from his first two albums and yes the new sound takes some getting used to. The snippet on Original High is a breakaway but I like it a lot. His emphasis though is...'I can come out as my own artist, and take my career where I want to'...so he's talking more of personal choice rather than being dictated or decided by others, like when he was on AI.
Adam has said many times he makes a statement & by the time he reads it the media has it all twisted up.Adam thanks Idol and the help they gave him had it not been for idol we may not have known Adam, what he has done after Idol is his hard work & never giving up always striving to be better this is what some of the artist on Idol did not do Adams work ethics now is what is important like he has said you have to be ready for what happens after Idol I will always be grateful for Idol & Adam.He has also said that he hopes to be on the show next year I hope he is to.
11:25 PM, so does that mean we don't believe anything in these interviews? Or believe it unless Adam corrects it?
I think you know what I mean listen to some of his interviews.
If it hadn't been for American Idol, in all probability, we would never have known Adam existed. It was the launching pad for the career he has now.
Idol is a blessing and a curse. It gives new talent a shot at fame and success. It also carries a "talent show" stigma, at least for some of the contestants. I think as Adam moves through his career, evolving and changing along the way, he'll continues to use music from each era that he knows his fans love best. Singers with long careers do this all the time. They sing the new; but they pay homage to the old. I interpret Adam's comment as saying that the Idol identity has to move aside. Sure, he's grateful, but a walk on the moon isn't all about the launching pad. Each era is exciting. He's an fascinating person with lots to offer. He wants to look forward, not back.
I love all Adam's music . . . . .
Adam has to realize people don't care what a great singer you are
People just want what they want
Any singer that hears you sing know what great vocals you have
You don't have to change or prove anything to me
And you were amazing on American Idol...
Agree @josie smith
And I swear, when I read some things on this blog - sometimes I feel like you people are not following the same singer that I am
All we know of Adam is only what he's allowed to be put out there, BUT, that is A LOT... and he has given us enough in the public domain to get a sense of him, I'd venture to guess even a good sense of him, and sometimes I wonder if people on this site, who I can tell are NOT trolls and are good fans, use their powers of recall at all when they read/watch/hear/absorb press and information that comes out on Adam and his career. I am NOT one of those fans who thinks Adam walks on water and does no wrong ('though I don't blog and comment about my thoughts on open forums and open fansites when I think that something less than great has come out in the media regarding Adam or his choices, I figure he's got enough haters to do that, just my POV), anyway, no - I am not one of those fans that thinks he does no wrong, but gosh, I think he's given us enough reason to trust his balancing giving his devoted fans what they enjoy and moving in new, modern directions.
The so called stigma attached to American Idol is ridiculous. What a load of unnecessary snobbery. Without American Idol, we would probably never know Adam, and he's said he'd like to be on the final show next year.
To @ 4:40AM- I so agree with your comment. AI was the platform that launched Adam's career. There is nothing wrong with change whether it is in your style or your music. Even though he is a vocal powerhouse, if you listen to the music heard today, vocal talent sometimes has nothing to do whether a song becomes a success. Adam has to compete in a field with boy bands, young male and female performers and the hip hop or rap performers in addition to the established artists. So where does he fit into today's music industry? Maybe his new album is not going to please all of his fans, but since he is moving in a different direction, you either will embrace the new sound or move on to another artist. I just hope that TOH and the singles released bring Adam all the success and recognition he so deserves in today's unpredictable world of music. He has worked so hard in the last six/seven years to become this remarkable artist we see today and it would be such a mistake to see his latest efforts ignored.
good for you Adam , get red of idol and those clingy egoists fans who don't want you to change and be there just for them .
Adam describes himself as "driven." He will persevere as he always has, and his music will take him in many directions. I love him as a singer and also as a fascinating person who has taught me a lot over the past six years. He has an astounding voice, for sure, but he knows more than any of us do that it's not about voice quality when it comes to a hit song. It's about the song. He's getting there. He's breaking through. Awareness and visibility is higher.
I'm grateful to Idol, too, but I want him to acquire new fans who may not even know he was on Idol and who love him just for who he is as a singer and as a person.
Dee R Gee, you hit the nail on the head with your comment at 5:45! Idol IS a blessing and a curse. And your follow up at 7:07 is spot on as well.
I always appreciate your input on this site. I know you live in the Chicago area, as I do. I hope we will have a chance to meet someday. :)
This is definitely a new era for Adam, and he is embracing it head on. He is treading new waters, that are new for him. That's takes guts, (I could have said that more crudely), but you know what I mean. This is the era we have been waiting for. He is doing so well on the charts, it is going to be an exciting year for Adam and for us his fans. We have already seen what a difference with his new label, and how they are promoting him full on. They recognize the star quality in Adam, and this is a business. They are not going to waste their money on someone who might do a good job for them, they are banking (pun intended) on Adam who will do a great job, and put his all into every project they set up for him. The success of TOH is a sure thing with the proper promotion, and Warner is so far doing this in spades.
I am glad he was on Idol, or I would never have known about him either. His style is changing, for the better and more popular way. All artists have to follow the new trends of the day, and Adam is on board with that.
Unless you hear something directly coming out of Adam's mouth, take the meaning with a half of grain of salt. Adam says all the time that he loves his first two albums and is very proud of them and so am I. No great stays in the same place forever, in my opinion. Great artist are constantly growing and moving on to their next soul searching musical experiences, for the pleasure of their own spiritual needs and hopefully those of most of their fan just as did/doing with Queen and now with his release of TOH musical history making sounds. No one can erase their past history, and Adam has said time, and time again that he proud of all of his past musical experiences, and his time of Idol; that helped to lead him to where he is today! We all should know by now, the words Adam has said over and over again, that many of these writers that he speaks with, "take liberties with the truth"! If you don't know Adam by now; you will never, never know him!
Adam is truly a beautiful "Gift From God", as Brian May of Queen, so eloquently put. We are in for many, many new an future treats from this man. Those fans that want everything about Adam to stay the same all the time, with looks, songs, etc.; to put it mildly, "you are following the wrong artist"!!!
Like the weather, Adam's singing style will probably always be changing; sometimes stormy and wild; sometimes like a bright sunny day; sometimes he will shake us up like an earthquake; sometimes we may get the explosion of a volcano; then the softness of new fallen snow. Sometimes the sounds of lighting and thunder may embrace our very ears, but, have no fear; it's still the one and only ADAM that's STILL here. So hold on tight folks, "it's may just be a bumpy ride"!!!
I say, "bring it on Adam Mitchel Lambert; surprise me every day, in every possible way; love it; love you, so just keep on trucking, you gorgeous young worldwide superstar! Dare I say, "addictive too"! Have a nice day. - Ella Mae D.
Ella Mae D., You said it!!! :)
krismidas, I would LOVE to meet up with you! I live @18 miles due east of the Loop. Town begins with an E. You probably know it. Can you post your twitter? Maybe we can connect that way and DM with details.
I see nothing wrong with Adam's departure from "Idol runner up" status. It's way overdue. In fact, I don't see much of what he has done so far as being Idol orientated. He got where he is on his own talent and personality. He is evolving as a performer. Some of his music I like, some I don't. However, as long as he's wiping the slate clean, is't it about time the "first openly gay musician" title got dropped as well. I am really sick of reading that as the first thing they mention to describe him. No one mentions anyone's sexuality in any other instance. We all know he's gay, and what does that have to do with his music anyway? Aren't we all defined by many other things besides our sexual identity? How about referring to him as the singer with the atmospheric vocal range, the mad sense of style and virtuosity? There is hardly a music style he can't master with astounding results. There's just so much to say about him besides "first openly gay musician," or "American Idol runner up," which are apropos of nothing.
Taylor Swift who is the radio darling of the year (years) completely changed her focus from country to pop. Nobody questions her decision to be more main stream. Adam has along way to go in comparison but he is trying to be relevant in the current highly competitive music business. I applaud him for doing his homework and digging deep into his soul to give us music that he connects to and loves.
Dear Ladies/Fans/Glamberts/Posters on this thread!
THANK YOU ALL for this wonderful, thoughtful and sensible thread filled with emotional yet rational and warm comments. Wish it was like this more often! Opinions, thoughts and feelings can be diverse and can differ, but presented like this, grown up style (he he), it was a pleasure reading them all! Don't even wanna add mine. :)
Yes, Taylor totally changed the genre she sings and gained new fans. But how many country fans did she leave behind? They are not happy about the change and did not follow her to pop.
I don't want the same thing to happen with Adam. He goes too far pop or too far dance and I will be left behind like Taylor's country fans.
Hi Dee R Gee. I am about 30 minutes north and a bit west from where you are. My suburb starts with a "B".
My twitter handle is @krismidas. I will keep an eye out for a message from you!
krismidas, I'm Cathy Jay @CathyCjugle on twitter. Tried to follow you but don't know if I did it. Novice! See if you can follow me back. Then we can DM. Hope you find this post on this older thread.
I like this thread, most of the comments are so thought-provoking, that's why , so late to the feast, yet, I'm here. All my life I've favored the idea that we're sum total of our past experiences, choices, that past is meaningful when it paves the way for present options, attitudes, that we can't , however much we want it , sometimes, cut completely the ombilical chord. Hmm, I think , our night dreams , most of them about past events/persons are kind of proof.
On the other hand I can't live facing/contemplating the past all the time, I cherish Adam's past accomplishments but I've decided to "give current plans a chance" lol, to let myself be taken out of my comfort zone. I've decided to join Adam's abrupt and astute, as well, choice of such different career plans , this new musical excursion seems to be more rewarding. It is still incomprehensible to me how hard his battle for acceptance was, how the heck media/audiences, in the past rejected him even though he proved , again and again, what a glorious voice had, and now a change of look , restrained vocals , seemed to have changed everything! All's well that ends well !
I think sales, more sales , fans/non-fans, will be good-better-best if he/they think of a knock-us/them-dead shows.
Too much EDM could knock 'em dead.
