Folks, just so you're not mislead, don't want you to get too excited on this.... Shazam Trending can be broken down not only by country, not only by metropolitan area, not only by city, but also by smaller areas around the cities, essentially the suburbs. This tweet is from a person who lives in a suburb outside of Philadelphia. She is looking at the app on her phone and the song is trending at #2 in her area. It is not trending at #2 in my area, in SF Bay Area and it is not trending at #2 even in Philadelphia. Also I looked on Shazam's website and it is definitely not trending at #2 in the USA -- it is currently at #37.

I think the trending also changes by the minute in each of those smaller areas and the USA chart, or any country chart, aggregates all of that trending to make an overall number (not exactly sure what period of time they use, maybe 24 hours.

I will add, however -- there are a few countries it's doing pretty good such as South Africa at #3, and Poland at #4 -- and even the continent of Africa is at #3 -- at least from the "Explore Top Tracks Around The World" map that Shazam has on the app. I'm sure it's going to work its way up a lot of charts of varying countries, and hopefully the US, too -- but we're not at #2 just yet.

Weird, it is currently #41 on trending Shazams, and #37 on the USA chart.

@12:00: where are you looking that it's #41? On the app on your phone? If so, read my comment again above which should answer your question.

I was using my phone. Where I saw the #41 was under charts and then the first thing, trending Shazams. I assume this is the world wide chart because there are often song titles not in English or an old song that I never see of the US Shazam chart.) I just checked and Ghost Town is not in the top 100 currently. So I think Ghost Town was trending internationally at #41when I left my earlier comment.

I am certainly not a Shazam expert but, given how GT is not in, say, the Top 10 in most countries as per all of the Top 100 lists on Shazam's website, it is highly unlikely it was #41 worldwide -- although, true, as i mentioned, I did see it was #3 on Africa, so you never know.

My guess on this is that Shazam uses your GPS, or at least your smartphone's network connection, to determine where you are and puts out the number where it's trending in your area. But, again, I'm not expert and not sure. Not to mention, the positioning changes constantly, likely by the hour.

In any case, the good news is that the single is still doing well and hopefully will continue to do so -- especially on the important charts like Billboard & Mediabase.
