Article/interview from the Richmond, Virginia Times/Dispatch

"Adam Turner, the Virginia Opera’s principal conductor and artistic advisor, is doing his best to make opera appealing to millennials and younger."

He has some complimentary things to say about Adam Lambert, his voice, AND Adam's new album is on his playlist!

Dr. Brian May & Adam Lambert of Queen

Excerpts from the article specific to Adam Lambert

QUESTION: What artists would we be most surprised to see in your playlist?

ANSWER: Lately I’m listening to new albums from Adam Lambert, Tame Impala, Death Cab for Cutie, Django Django and Kendrick Lamar. When it’s all said and done, I’m drawn to good singers, good bands and good songwriting — of any genre.

QUESTION: Do any of those singers have opera-quality voices? Any modern-day Freddie Mercurys?

ANSWER: There are a lot of rock and pop singers with freakish voices and incredible range, performers who exude theatricality. Adam Lambert’s voice comes immediately to mind, especially given the Freddie Mercury comparison and his tour with the recently reunited Queen.

I am a big Opera person. I grew up with Opera from childhood. Both my parents loved Opera and when I lived with my parents, particularly during high school when my parents had more money, I had subscription seats to the orchestra at The Metropolitan Opera. There is no doubt that Adam Lambert has an Opera quality voice and for people like me, well, we would love to see Adam Lambert in an Opera. He'd probably kill some of those arias! What is funny is he talks musical theater. How silly, that's just bubble gum. The real musical theater that counts is Opera--now that's where the big boys go, the ones with voices that count. For people who have spent their lives with music, who grew up with the great operas and have listened to some of the most extraordinary voices of all times, it is easy to see that Adam could easily move in Opera circles. I am assuming that because Adam grew up in California the land of cardboard he has no idea. If Adam ever wanted to participate in true theater, he'd step out in an Opera. And there has been precedent for folks like him. Linda Ronstadt performed in The Pirates of Penzance.

Granted, of course, The Pirates of Penzance isn't quite an Opera, but its close! Probably the closest a rock star has ever gotten to it. But Adam could easily do Opera. Damn, can you imagine it guys, what that would be like?!? Oh my God.

Adam certainly has the vocal chops to do opera. And he has had some opera vocal training, although he tends to downplay that. I think he had that instruction for only a relatively short time. But he says that he does use the techniques he has learned about breathing, tone, chest, etc. I think he'd be fantastic in an opera.

The thought of Adam bringing his magnificence to shine in opera gives me shivers down my spine. And I am not an opera fan. I can just see it. I love the more sophisticated tone in TOH, but still I feel that so much of his talent gets lost in the superficial pop world. And I like pop music :)

I too would love to hear Adam let loose in an opera. When I was a child of 11 I spent a glorious year living only a short train ride away from NYC. My mother, who among her other talents, was a singer, took advantage of our proximity to The Met and we went to enjoy many operas.
As soon as the orchestra began to play my whole body would begin to tingle in anticipation. My favorite was Puccini's Madame Butterfly....wow, the music and the costumes! My mother could sing the gloriously sad solo Un Bel Di Vedremo.......later when I was in high school and she was kept busy chauffeuring my friends from one school activity to another we'd beg her to sing and she'd say, "okay, close the car windows!"

Then she'd belt out Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, a bit of Un Bel Di and usually finished up yodeling The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze.
She was extremely versatile and a hoot! My friends loved her.....I was born under a lucky star.
