K-Hits Chicago: Queen With Freddie Mercury VS. Queen With Adam Lambert — Who Sounds Better?

We’re giving away tickets to the Queen with Adam Lambert concert at the United Center, so I figured I’d do a side-by-side comparison of Freddie Mercury and Adam Lambert!
It’s definitely interesting to listen to them both sing the same song. And on previous tours, Adam’s proven to be a more than capable frontman. But can he take on Freddie?

One thing you can say about Adam: he doesn’t copy Freddie! He does his own thing, and it works… But is it better?

I've refused to listen to this, as I think both are great and there isn't a competition. I would think most fans will feel this way.

I agree...los dos son UNICOS, pero ahora disfrutamos de "nuestro Adam"

I have no problem listening to both. But, in all honesty, I was never particularly enthralled with Freddie's voice... long before Adam ever turned up....although I loved Queen.

It's Adam for me, hands down. His voice is more "classic"and pleasing to MY ears.

But Freddie has an extra edge.. because he was the FIRST, and he's DEAD....memories are usually embellished over time... and it's much easier to be "iconic" when you're dead!

Mark Martel sounds better than both. Just my opinion.

Mark Martel is a great imitator, just like Journey's new singer. So if that's what you're looking for ?????

Your kidding right? Adam all the way, no downing anyone else but his voice is so powerful and pitch perfect. Adam can interpret a song like no other and I'll never tire of seeing or listening to him.

I was a fan Freddie but when I first heard ADAM I said OMG THIS MAN IS REAL? I like more her voice and her stage presence.

Mi Re La said...

Freddie was the best in 1970-1980 because Adam was not then.

Hi, Nick..... there's always a Mark Martell fan that pops up about now.. Didn't you know that even Mark has said that Adam is the best frontman for Queen? And Brian and Roger are so happy to be touring again with Adam as their frontman...their choice.

And, Allysa, I don't think of Mark Martel or Journey's new singer as "imitators", but as sound-alikes. Their voices are just very similar, but natural to them....not forced to sound that way.

BTW, Steve Perry is one of my all-time favorites...but that new guy sounds eerily like him.

It's a meaningless question.
Best to ignore as it will only bring on haters and trolls.
Not worth the effort to reply to it.
IMHO ...

Polls like this just start a lot of nasty arguments. I won't play that game. Adam and Mark have different functions. Mark's job is to sound like Freddie and act similar to him onstage. And he does a great job of it.If Brian and Roger had simply wanted a sound-a-li to perform with Queen itself, they would have hired Mark. Adam's job is to breathe new life into Queen's music and create a different persona. As Brian and Roger have repeatedly said, Adam is their Gift From God. Freddie and his legacy stand alone with no comparison or argument from me.

I'm not going to reply directly to this article. Articles like this create fan wars & nasty, nasty comments on both sides.

I love both Freddie & Adam. They're both superb & both wonderful frontmen of the iconic, fabulous band that is Queen.

Marc Martel is great. I've been to Queen Extravaganza & it's an excellent concert. Marc doesn't act like Freddie on stage - he performs well but he's not theatrical - but he does sound like him & he looks as though he could be related to him. Brian & Roger chose him extremely well & the band is fantastic. In fact, in interview, Roger said he wouldn't like to be following them after they performed.

There's room in this world to enjoy all 3 of these supremely talented artists.

Here we go again with the freakin' comparisons ... now someone has added Marc Martel to the equation!! All three are good & unique in their own way ... never listened to QUEEN or Freddie back in the day ... if not for ADAM & QAL .. I probably would still be in the dark about QUEEN. As for Marc Martel ... I saw him once on ELLEN TV show & I did think he looked & sounded a lot like Freddie but that doesn't give him an edge over anyone!! There a lot of look/sound alike ELVIS's out there but none of them gives me the joy & pleasure ELVIS did b/cuz they are NOT ELVIS!! If I want to hear ELVIS I listen to him ... if I want to hear QUEEN ... I listen to QAL ... not with Freddie b/cuz I never knew Freddie .. not b/cuz I don't like him!! He's good ... Marc is fine ... but the only one I can relate to TODAY is ADAM with or without QUEEN!! No comparisons ... just my preference!! I am an ADAM fan .. a Glambert ... without ADAM in the equation .. I probably never would have found out about QUEEN!! ADAM brings QUEEN to life for me!! JMO ... Don't need a poll to tell me what I should like ... I have a mind of my own .. that's all the info I need!! No one else compares to ADAM ... that's my HONEST & HEARTFELT opinion!! What more can I say??

@Mirela Gheorghui, the article doesn't mention Marc Martel. He's been mentioned in conversation on this topic.

Some songs I prefer sung by Freddie, some by Adam. Especially Save me, I never liked that song in the Freddie Mercury version. It sounded more like he was being attacked by a shark rather than a love song.

My 2 cents on this article...

Freddie Mercury was a genius. I've loved the music of Queen for years and always will.. I had a little crush on Roger Taylor back in the day (now you know! Haha!).. All of the original members of Queen deserve huge respect for their iconic body of work.

I was instantly smitten with Adam Lambert and his voice and his talents for song interpretation and his genuine humility and personality when he first appeared on American Idol. That has never diminished in the years since then.. Huge fan then and now (obviously...)..

Re Marc Martel (since his name was mentioned here on this thread). I have respect and admiration for him as well. I remember when Brian & Roger (although it was mainly Roger's project) were first proposing an official Queen Tribute band Queen Extravaganza and they had opened up auditions for lead singer. Marc bears a striking resemblance to Freddie Mercury and his voice is eerily similar.. And excellent.. A perfect match for the project.

Queen Extravaganza (with Marc) is a tribute band/act:

From Wikipedia: "A tribute act, tribute band or tribute group is a music group, singer, or musician who specifically plays the music of a well-known music act. Tribute acts include individual performers who mimic the songs and style of an artist..."

In other words, the Queen tribute band mimics the style, and in some cases, the voices, of Queen & Freddie Mercury.. I haven't personally been to one of their concerts, although I've seen some videos over time, but they are extremely successful and are still touring worldwide, helping to keep the music alive, with Queen's blessing & backing.. But they are not Queen.

Queen + Adam Lambert tours the world with 2 of the original/founding members of Queen. Brian May & Roger Taylor ADORE Adam for his voice, his charisma, his song interpretations, his sense of humor, his respect for them & the music & Freddie.. They are fully aware that no one can replace Freddie.. They've also said many times that they would not personally be touring if it was not for Adam Lambert. They clearly love him as much as we fans of Adam do, perhaps more, because they know him personally, they know his true persona and his heart..

If it was not for Adam, I would never have had the opportunity to hear the music of Queen played live by Brian and Roger. The first time I experienced it (at iHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas in 2013) I was eternally thankful to the Universe for bringing Adam Lambert along at just the right moment to inspire Brian & Roger to tour again.. I cried tears of happiness at that concert because of the music and pride for Adam.

So to address the "question" of who is "better", Freddie Mercury or Adam Lambert: BOTH are beautiful, talented, intriguing men who have a rare gift, the ability to entertain, inspire, delight, and sing their asses off, beautifully. Obviously, the question was posed to create buzz, and controversy. And get people to click on their website.. No doubt we'll continue to see this type of question for all eternity..

Freddie and Adam are both fabulously talented, each in their own special way. May Freddie's legacy of music endure for all time.. Adam has been blessed with the gift of being a part of Queen and has become part of that legacy.. No need to compare or rate who is "better"..

Beautifully said, glitzylady. :-)

P.S.
I'm sure a lot of girls had a crush on Roger back in the day .... & some probably still have a crush on him. <3

FYI..probably so late on this thread that everyone has moved on...I finally found this...

Sept. 3, 2014...in a USA Today interview...Marc Martell said ..."In my opinion, Queen has the current best male singer in the world singing for them"..."He's an incredible virtuoso".
