Queen’s Brian May compares Freddie Mercury and Adam Lambert eras!

As Queen prepares to take its world tour with Adam
Lambert into the UK and Europe in 2015, Brian May is making a bold statement
about how they compare with the band’s Freddie Mercury-fronted era.
“The energy which we generate in an
arena is I would say as strong as ever — and I think Freddie would agree with
me,” May tells Neu Magazine. “I don’t
think he would be upset with me saying that. I think the Queen show today that
we do with Adam Lambert is the equal of anything we ever did.”
Mercury, who passed in 1991 from
AIDS-related complications, was a cornerstone in Queen’s initial success. Since
his death, May and Roger Taylor have appeared with a number of guest vocalists — though
Paul Rodgers and now Adam Lambert have enjoyed the longest stints.
May admits, however, that he wasn’t
seeking another frontman when Queen initially met Lambert during a joint
appearance on American Idol in 2009.
“I wasn’t looking for a lead
singer,” May says, “but suddenly, here’s this guy who is very much like
Freddie, in some ways. He’s very ebullient, he’s very camp, he’s very funny —
and the voice is outrageously brilliant. And he can do Queen songs. He has the
spirit for it. So we just said, ‘OK, we have to do this. Let’s give this a
try.'”

Again.
Yea, Brian equating their Freddie/Queen performances to Adam/Queen performances, says it loud and clear. Freddie was indeed a musical genius in terms of creating/arranging the Queen repertoire together with his Queen band members. But if I have to be really truthful with regard voice delivery / quality...I have to say Adam has the upper cutting-edge. Then again, without Freddie, Adam would not have those iconic songs to sing.
You said it well, Lam-My. I listened to all of them, and Adam has more to give in his voice than any of them, even Freddie.
His voice is .... just no words can describe it and his delivery.
Freddie and the rest of Queen were brilliant in writing these songs, I am so glad they did. I think Adam is having the time of his life right now, with this opportunity with Queen, and he is living it to the fullest, because he knows it will end, fairly soon, and he will be back with his own music.
Yes, Freddie was a superb song writer, musician and singer. His songs will live forever.
Anne Marie...Thanks. The way Adam weaves his voice in and out singing Somebody To Love...and that's why I have to watch the video many times, to get all the skills he applies almost at every note though it simply comes off reflexively. He got super voice projection. I think Adam is a singing genius.
Just a thought that I have to get off my chest. I am starting to get fedup with the articles that start out how wonderful Adam is etc. etc but have to interject with "He is no Freddie Mercury". I get the feeling these people feel obligated to say that. Come on folks its a new era and Freddie been gone now for over 20 years. Also I might add I agree with people who say Adam's voice is superior. Freddie was good in his day but when you listen to the two voices singing the same tracks you can see the difference. Some of the old rockers say they don't like Adam's tone and I think its the fact that he is dead on point with his voice and they are used to the old style rock singers who really did a lot of screaching when trying to hit the high notes but it was the style back then and considered a good thing. Most of these singers by the way have blown there vocal cords away and probably wouldn't be able to front a band anymore.
Anyway, enough of my thoughts just had to get them out there. Anyone else getting fed up with the phrase "He is no Freddie Mercury"???
@Jackie43 - I understand what you're saying about the constant comparison. Perhaps if Queen hadn't been such a well-known band with such an iconic frontman, the "he's no Freddie" statement might now be made as often. You know, I got thinking about this, and some of the singers I really enjoy aren't necessarily the "best" or have the widest range, but have something in the tone or emotion on their voice that grabs me. Maybe that's what some of the die-hard's feel about Freddie's voice.
And as much as I love Adam's voice and must hear him sing every day, when he did the cover of Enter Sandman (the Metallica song)on the Glam Nation tour, it took me a few listens to get used to it. And the problem for me was Adam's voice was simply too good for the song!
Someday, I bet we'll hear people say "He's no Adam Lambert, but...."

I prefer Adam singing Adam's songs and Freddie singing Queen's songs. To each his/her own.
Freddie was Queen, no one can compare, he was loud he was physical. He was outrageous. He and his music rocked the world.
Adam is a great singer and does a fantastic job, but those songs are and always will be Freddies. Adam must put out his own music and soon. Songs that will always be his, that will make him world famous.
As long as Adam is fronting Queen the comparisons will be made. He's singing someone else's music. I hope after this early 2015 tour that ends it. He has to move on, no matter how glorious it has been.
Freddie and Adam are great vocalists and showman. I think their vocal styles are very different. When Adam sings "killer queen" it sounds like a whole new song. His interpretation is brillant.
only Adam can vocally carry the Queen classics that Freddie made so famous. Adam breathes new life into them while introducing them to a whole new generation. Adam was just 9 years old when Freddie passed. He was introduced to Queen at a young age not knowing that one day he would be the frontman. The stars perfectly aligned.
Dragon Attack will stab you right in the chest and leave you yearning for more. one of the sexiest Queen songs ever. on heavy rotation in this house.
Freddie and Adam enough said indeed!!!:)
Loved Freddie and will not change anything!!:) Adam will honour his legacy indeed!!:)

Thank you JAK. Your commonsense and wisdom are insightful. :))
For a change of pace, new pic on Adam's Twitter .........

The upside of QAL is the incredible exposure for Adam, worldwide. He has attracted new fans in this collaboration. And he'll always be in the rock music annals of history because of it.
Downside is the inevitable comparison to Freddie. I do believe that some writers find it obligatory to say that Adam "is no Freddie Mercury." To not say it is to somehow diminish Freddie's legacy. Anyone with ears can hear the quality of Adam's voice. It's better than Freddie's in some ways. It's almost blasphemy to say that, but Brian has had the guts to hint at it. I think he and Roger are still pinching themselves at their discovery of Adam. A gift from God, as they have said. Queen had a rough patch in recent years where they couldn't fill large venue or barely even smaller ones. It felt like the end had come. Now it's a new era of Queen, stronger than ever.
JAK, you're right, of course, about Adam's own career. QAL won't last a lifetime for him, nor does he want that. We all hope that QAL has boosted his cred enough to get good sales for A3. I want to hear new ADAM music, too. And see it at the top of the charts.
I'm not fed up reading about Freddie/Adam per se but I'm fed up with the seemingly endless articles saying the same thing over and over ad nauseam, and no doubt there'll be more to come.
There are Queen fans who hate Adam's voice and there are Adam's fans who hate Freddie's voice, and I can't see that changing any time soon. The difference is that Freddie was an allround artist - singer, songwriter and musician - whereas Adam's forte is in his voice.
In my opinion, anybody who says they "hate" Adam's voice or Freddie's voice is not saying that because they really hate that person's voice. They're saying it (or feeling it) because of some personal attitude or principle or loyalty or even jealousy. Both these guys have incredible voices. How could anyone hate either one? The voice quality is totally great for both. I believe that the "hate" thing is more about the attitude toward the singer, not the singer's voice. Of course, one of the "haters" is not going to accept my theory because their mind is made up.
I think one of the reasons Jackie is fed up is because she reads every article about Adam and Queen. Most people will read one, maybe two. It is expected the author will make a comparison comment. Also, Freddie is iconic. Adam isn't yet. That does not detract from Adam.
As for the Queen and Freddie fans who don't like Adam, not everybody likes the same thing. Surely you can't deny Adele has an amazing voice but not everybody likes her. It's personal taste. Also try to imagine somebody singing Adam's songs in the future. Some fans already have fits when singing show contestants sing not only one of Adam's songs but one of his amazing covers. It's like that for Freddie fans.
Bottom line to me is it serves no one well to create these one is better than the other debates or to complain about how articles and reviews are written.
I'm with JAK, as fun as this run with Queen has been, it's time for Adam to get back to his solo career where he can shine for his own work.
Adam and Freddie fantastic singers and performers. Adam Lambert is an all around Performer far from just a voice but what a voice it is few if any out there now can compare.
He is a singer, song writer, Host, actor and what of the best stage performer I seen. His charisma and sexy appeal is off the charts.
Adam has wrote some good song and hopefully with album 3 and a great producer like Max Martin he will get it out there and prove that, Adam dies not play a piano like Freddie in Ads case the way he performs it really wouldn't fit in any way. But that man is far from just being a about the voice. I hope many more abroad see the Queen and Adam concert and see what a fabulous, fabulous entertainer Adam is and those crazy good vocals this man has. I knew little about Freddie but I can say I know a lot about Adam Lambert. Adam L is an all around crazy good Entertertainer and singer.
Like SS and others have said we the fans have seen nothing yet of what Adam will do in the future and what he capable of. He is far from just about the voice but what hell of a voice that man has, just outrageous. Made a couple mistakes or more but don't I always. Adding one thing Brian in an interview other day said he he believes that Adam will be an icon there no telling where Adam will end up. He meant that in the best of ways. Sue
Brian and Roger have had the good fortune to have had two of the most amazing vocalists who have ever lived. We, the fans get unprecedented access and countless opportunities to see Adam hone his craft and advance himself, worldwide. We also get to see Queen and it's a total win win package. Adam will still have his solo career, but meantime he gets to enjoy the fame and fortune, which to date had eluded him. Not saying it was fair or unfair, but Adam is in a great position financially, vocally and it's what his fans have always wished for him. Perhaps this is the way, it was meant to be for Adam, via the Queen machine. Seems petty to argue with his path to success, as things had to change for him, to get to where he deserved and wanted to be. As Freddie, Brian and Roger have always said Queen is the Mothership, from which they launched their solo ventures, successfully or non successfully. Adam also now has that chance and as Queen has found out, when you have a comfortable launching pad, it's easier to pursue other ventures, and that takes a lot of pressure off, when you are viewed as being successful.
I agree with JAK that it is time for Adam to move on to his own music. Although he has had phenomenal success with Queen, I want to hear Adam performing new songs for the third album we have heard about for quite some time now. With the success of the boys bands and the young female singers in today's music world, Adam needs to get in there with his own style of music. I am anxious to hear what path his music will take in 2015. Adam is one of the best vocal talents in music today and hopefully the new album will bring him the recognition and success he so deserves in his own right.
11.45 I totally agree with you. Very well said. Sue
I see Adam's music / art / creative genius as a progression from one natural phase to another or may even have 2 facets occurring parallel to each other like now, doing Queen and his own album. It's not a stop /start affair, it's a continuum of Adam's arduous long and winding road to reach his Rockstar destination. Not necessary for Adam to stop the Queen thing just to be able to do his own thing. I see both as one thing, not two separate entities. So I feel Adam is doing the right thing by following instinctively, doing Queen at the same time getting his album out simultaneously or one following the other.
As for Freddie songs belonging to Freddie, well think again...Adam has made his stamp on many Queen songs...the latest being Somebody To Love and what about WWTLF and others, technically they belong to Queen. Actually many singers don't sing their own written songs but Adam is not abandoning that, he said his album is almost finished. I say Congratulations Adam, despite your hectic schedule with Queen. Don't fret over whether it's Queen songs or Adam's own songs...Adam's musical calling must be viewed as a continuum of his creative genius.
Hold your horses with what Adam has to do or not to do (with his own music and when)...
You had your QAL, now let Europe enjoy them too with full force before stating your demands on Adam, lol!
Personally I hope they keep reuniting every now and then (if possible and they feel it) as long as the Queen guys enjoy performing...Queen music is timeless and just having listened to my old Queen CD's "Queen Greatest hits I and II", I must say QAL sounds awesome, younger and fresher....
@11:45
Love your post and way of thinking.
Thank you!

Hate is a strong word and so is jealousy and there are a lot of jealous fans in the Queen + Adam Lambert world. It's not a competition although it seems it certainly is for some. The venom that abounds is horrendous. I'll be glad when Adam is singing his own songs again and then hopefully people will calm down.
Adam has to move on, where can he go with Queen songs? They have been heard for decades. No matter how well he sings them, they will never be his. He is borrowing them. He is not going to record them.
Queen will not be around forever, great as they are, time runs out.
Of course he can still appear with them for special occasions, but he must pursue his own identity, own songs. He has to be Adam Lambert - not "the guy who fronts for Queen".
Trust the Bitch... the Beast called Adam F. Lambert!
He knows what he's doing and his management is there for him, too.
Hope his fans could just leave "the musts" to the ones in the know and enjoy the ride or at least try to live in the moment a bit more. Not our job to say what he must or must not do.
Yea, like Adam himself said on X Factor...
"Be present at every moment and think ahead.'
That's what Adam is exactly doing now. Be present with Queen, yet his own album is almost finished and ready to go, most likely after QAL/2.
