At last....a real connection with Adam.......we share a mutual fear and loathing of algebra!

The interview went so slow with those tow talking, I had to skip the enterpatation part, that put me to sleep. Adams answers were fun, but to drug out on the ladies part.

Meant two, on the above comment.

These interviews that require translations do take a long time. Everything has to be said twice and it ruins the momentum. But Adam always makes the best of it. And JAK, I'm with you and Adam. The ONLY "D" I got in high school was in geometry. The ONLY one. I just couldn't do those awful proofs. But I was in Honors English and a few other high-rated classes. But math? Forget it. At least I didn't actually flunk. Now, all Adam has to be able to do related to math is count his money (or hire someone else to do it.)

I've said this before...Mathematics is in fact the most interesting subject ever evolved; it's such a revelation when one is able to see through or solve a seemingly convoluted unsolvable problem. Example, in equations like, let X be the answer and weave your solution from the supposed answer X which is not there, thus solving the problem presuming X is the answer, which requires the brain to work backwards rather than progressively forward to arrive at the answer. Simultaneous equations, solving two overlapping equations at the same time to arrive at a single answer...another Maths killer. lol!
It takes a very smart Maths teacher with innovation to ignite the brain to love Mathematics...a lousy Math teacher will kill it instantly.

I have given this simple er not so simple example, about the fascination Maths offers.
My Maths lecturer once wrote on the blackboard or chalkboard, many moons ago:

1 + 1 = 0 ... well well well, by golly he showed that it was a possible statement/answer.

Using a table-lamp for illustration:

Pull the string once, the light comes on...pull the string a second time...the light goes of...1 + 1 = 0 ! lol!

By the way, Albert Einstein solved the mystery of the universe using mostly Mathematics formulae...no Hubble telescope then and what is even more profound, he never conducted a single experiment...just Mathematics and Brain!

I'm glad I was only obliged to take simple business arithmetic in high school such as loan equations (principal + interest, etc.) ... I never could figure out all the X + Y = ? Now my grandchildren are geniuses at all this & I feel so dumb but that's the way the world turns ... I guess.

Oh yes Tess... I remember: principal+interest = pay back time...lol! Or get back time too. There is a formula specifically to calculate the interest % based on the principal and the duration of loan. lol!
Well, as for Adam... The king was in the counting house, counting out his money...The queen was in the parlour eating bread and honey...lol!
It goes to prove, one doesn't have to be good at Maths to make Maths work for them.

Lam-My said...

Aha...should be 'principle' lol! That's how rusty my Maths has gotten. And also above: of + f = off. lol! In algebraic terms: of + f = of + f ...same. lol!

Lam-My said...

Oh oh...my Maths did not get that rusty after all...'principal' is the correct term. lwl!

Timeslot, I know you like Maths...finally, you give me a triple Bingo: 9 9 9 !

I had to listen extra carefully to the girl asking the questions because despite the fact that I had the volume turned up to maximum sound, her voice was very soft & I missed some of what she asked. Nevertheless, it was a good interview and as usual, Adam was a joy to listen to.

It is fascinating how the human brain works. I am an outstanding speller, but I'm not so good at math. On the other hand, I know people with graduate degrees in science and technology who are lousy spellers. No figure.
