(Review) LA Times: Adam Lambert "The Original High" Tour LA

Adam Lambert performs Saturday night at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. (Luis Sinco / Los Angeles Times)

American Idol” introduced us to Adam Lambert, but it’s also what’s kept us from really getting to know him.

In 2009, this former San Diego theater kid struck the televised singing competition like a bolt of originality. He was sensitive but macho, showy yet deep-feeling. As a vocalist, he could level a room with pure power but was also capable of smaller inflections.

Yet “Idol’s” method — then as now, just before the series is set to conclude Thursday night — is to smooth out that type of originality. The show sands the edges from unique talents to fit them into known compartments.

So it’s no wonder that in the years since he finished in second place (behind the dull folkie Kris Allen, whose edges came pre-sanded), Lambert carried on in a similar fashion, trying on a succession of ready-made identities. There was a glam-rock album, a flirtation with ’80s electro-funk, even a collaboration with Queen in which he more or less played the role of the late Freddie Mercury.

At least all the comments under the article pretty much tore the author of the article apart - as they should! Hope the LA Times pays attention to the fact that this guy is biased and shouldn't be writing reviews. Awful!

This so-called reviewer, Wood, for the LA TImes comes across as a cocky juvenile who is trying to pass himself off as a snide, cranky seen-it-all critic for the equally useless NY Times. It is to laugh that this kid thinks he can get away with telling us what Mr Lambert thinks and feels. Clearly, Mr. Wood's review falls into that category that prompts one to ask the familiar question: "What in Hades are you smoking, Mr. Wood?

I can tell you from personal experience that this man's review of Adam's show in LA at the Orpheum Theater on April 2nd, is strangely skewed and in some ways NOT the experience of people who were there, myself included.. It is also not strictly a "review" of the concert, but his own personal opinion of some other areas of Adam's career that quite honestly only Adam could actually comment on..

Read the comments on the article..

The crowd at the Orpheum in LA was wildly receptive to ALL of Adam's music, past and present.. and not just long-term Adam Lambert fans. There were MANY people there, of all ages. genders, sexual orientations, who were experiencing "live Adam" for the first time.. I and others spoke with so many people who were simply blown away by Adam's music, vocals, performance skills, etc. at this concert, people who had never gone to one of his live appearances before this weekend...

A personal experience: After the 2nd night's show (Sunday, April 3), Adam had just finished his concert, to thunderous applause, cheers, standing ovation after standing ovation.....(but I digress)...2 men who were sitting directly behind me started speaking to each other about what an amazing voice Adam has, what an incredible performer he is... and what great music, what a fantastic concert he put on, etc.. etc.. They were a gay married couple, together for years.. I and a couple of friends started chatting with them.. They were in awe of Adam, not only of his music, his voice, his skills, but of his courage to be himself. They mentioned that when they were growing up, being gay was not okay, not something they could be open about, be proud about.. One of the things they admire about him and appreciate about him is the fact that he has helped in his own way, to open up conversation and acceptance.. Certainly Adam is only one of many other GLBT personalities who have helped, but he should definitely be pleased that his presence in this world of our has affected so many people, around the world, in so many ways....

I realize that everyone has an opinion, reviewers included, but this one quite honestly made sense in some parts, and was rather WTF?? to me in others..

Just my take on this review..

And as for the reviewer's rhetorical question "can't we just let Adam Lambert be Adam Lambert?":

At Adam's Lambert's shows on April 2nd and 3rd, he was EXACTLY that! Superb vocalist extraordinare, engaging & experienced & entertaining stage performer, sexy at times, serious at times, witty, sometimes goofy, comedian, social and political commentator, dancer, fanboy of his band and dancers, charming, humble, proud of who he is, is not afraid to show us, and the world his many sides, nuances, and his ever evolving talent. He knows exactly who he is, and that is exactly who we witnessed those two nights.

Thank you, glitzy! Your comments are perfect, absolutely perfect. You really hit the nail on the head about that "review." It really wasn't a review of the concert much at all. He just wanted to vent some other "views." Anyway, I envy you seeing both LA shows. I loved my Chicago show so much, but these final two had to have been beyond great. I love your list of things about Adam and who he is. Not all artists show very much of themselves. Adam does it so naturally, with such sensitivity and charm and natural kindness and humor and honesty. I know I've said it hear so often, but once again, he is a true gem, a one in a billion. I treasure my time following him. He's so much more than just a singer. And he has a lifetime ahead of him.

I just lost my post and it was a long one. Grrrrrrrrrr. I was there for both of the L.A. Shows and I'm still grinning and in awe of Adam's amazing performances. When I read Mr. woods "review" I was at first angry, offended for Adam and in short very upset at his comment about the audience being "less interested in this refreshed individual than the cartoon of yore". Is he kidding? This audience was totally engaged in Adam's performance as they jumped, danced, sang along with Adam....it was really something to witness.

Anyway, obviously the reviewer doesn't know that Adam has always been true to himself and is such an honest and open individual. No one can tell Adam what to do, he's doing exactly what he wants to do. I'm so glad that Adam is Adam and I'm lucky enough to be a fan of his during my lifetime. He is pure joy for me.

I left my comment to Mr. Wood at the link ... wasn't nasty (although I had to carefully guide my hand while I responded) ... just told him in no uncertain terms ... openly & honestly ... ADAM *IS* being ADAM ... everytime he steps on that stage ... plus a few more things ....... most of the comments were not as tactful as I TRIED to be but I think he got the message!!
